I love the Nachos with beans/cheese/jalapeños and the Cheese Flautas - I'd eat them everyday if I could afford it/ wouldn't kill me - and I will continue to eat at Castro's as long as I am in the hood because I like the food, I really really do... but sometime it hard to justify dropping $30 on "cheap" Mexican for two when I could buy the same amount of food in CA for under $10 - I'm seriously one more $9 Chili Relleno away for begged someone in LA drop some burritos into a Fed Ex overnight package. It feels like the cost would be the same! I've lived around the corner from this place for going on three years and I think the best word I can use to describe it is: Acceptable. For a while, I really loved it, it's cheap, close, and open until midnight. Their food leans reasonably between authentic Mexican and Tex-Mex crowd pleasing. I always love their vegetable tostadas, especially smothered in green salsa. But there is a major issue with consistency and they often use very poor quality ingredients and it shows. I stopped eating there altogether for months after nearly choking on a giant chicken bone inside my chicken burrito. I can honestly say it only happened once, I made them aware of it (by showing them the bones), they apologized profusely, though did not offer a refund. I've gone back since on rare occasion, but something like that kind of sticks with you. They've also always been hit or miss with their carnitas, which is usually my reason for seeking out Mexican food in general. It's also unwise to go here if you wish specialize anything in your order since 9/10 times I've asked for a different kind of bean, or extra green salsa, it doesn't happen. The staff is always very polite, but I can never shake the impression that they just don't really care that much. Bottom line: If you're passing through the neighborhood and really want cheap Mexican, this is a decent place to stop, but it's not somewhere I'd go out of my way to recommend. read more

Ordered takeout nachos and a fruit shake. The fruit shake buys the 1 star, but the nachos were a fail. For the price- small quantity and every chip was soggy and falling apart. 30min+ wait, which was probably due to it sitting behind the counter before it was brought out to us when we had to ask someone. Horrible experience! Friends and I went to Castro's for lunch and will NEVER return. When our food arrived, we noticed that they managed to get at least one item from each and every order incorrect, including drinks! The food wasn't enjoyable. The burrito had no sort of flavor, the drinks sucked, and although I love spicy foods, the level of spiciness in my enchiladas was truly unbearable. They refused to change my order, even after they had already messed up every other order, like I mentioned. I asked if I could purchase additional enchiladas, which I would pay for, and was told that they couldn't sell me enchiladas, I would have to purchase an additional lunch plate instead. After we had all agreed that we would never visit this place again, things got worse. My daughter asked to use the restroom, and the toilet in the women's restroom literally had NO toilet seat. I told the waitress and she said in a snobbish voice, "no, it doesn't have a toilet seat, it's been that way." I took my daughter to the men's room and it was so incredibly disgusting, that we left. I would never recommend this place and would never go back. One star because my daughter like her pancakes. read more

Castro's was the first restaurant I went to upon moving to Bed-Stuy, and I'm happy for this. The food was fresh, delicious, and authentic. The atmosphere is comfortable, with a cute outdoor patio that you'd never know was there just from walking past. The prices are pretty cheap. The Cokes are served cold and from a can. It's close to my apartment, that's about it. The food isn't memorable or completely forgettable. Not the best and not the worst Mexican in Brooklyn but definitely lacking in flavor and freshness. By now, everyone knows I'm always on the hunt for good chicken tacos in this glorious city. They are as plentiful in this town as Starbucks and Duane Reade's (and we all have our favorites of those as well). But I have a secret...when I'm a little chicken taco-ed out, I switch it up. I know, it's blasphemous. How can anyone get sick of chicken tacos? But it's true, it happens. Sometimes, a girl really wants a crunchy little chicken tostada. I'm a regular wild child! Happily, Castro's has a darn good one! Although I went in craving a fajita, which I did order and wasn't too thrilled by, the chicken tostada balanced out my disappointment with the fajita. I would gladly go back to order more of those tostadas. And, the fajita reheated pretty decently, and that's a big plus in my book. The people were really nice and attentive as well and that always makes me want to give that extra half a star that I'm not allowed to give here. So instead I'll tip my hat (and my waitress while I was there) and give Castro's another go for those tostadas and of course to test out those chicken tacos. My hunch, so long as I stay away from the rice options, I'll be much happier with my meal. read more

Hygiene important to you? Stay away from Castros! I've been going to Castro's for several years, almost a decade. They have always had consistent food at unbeatable prices. I used to dream of their burritos! Unfortunately, the last three times I have gone (within the last six months), I have SEEN the cook/ cooks behind the counter, digging in noses, scratching at privates and other unholy acts while preparing the food! I DID let the other members of the staff know on each occasion what I had witnessed only to be blown off. Please keep in mind that I have been a very steady customer. This review is for the delivery... The breakfast burrito is awesome. They pack it full of rice, beans, chicken, eggs and cheese. This reminds me of Burritos in California. It's rare to find a good Burrito place in Manhattan. Brooklyn, Yes! If your hungry you can eat a whole one. Lightweight? Just split one with a friend and your good. I love pretty much every dish that I've tried except the chicken quesadilla that I've tried a few times and just don't like. The avocado salad is awesome! I also enjoy the hard ground beef tacos. Hubby orders a little of everything but mostly Philly Cheesesteaks. Yeah, not Mexican but they make a good sandwich anyway. I even got a great grilled cheddar cheese sandwich here a few months ago. We have eaten in a couple of times and the service is good but we mostly get take out. Phone ordering is not that easy on rainy nights or on the days when it's snowing. You just can't get through on the phone and need to walk over. I usually just have hubby stop by on his way in from work since there is a bus stop right out front and you can park and pop in and out quickly, so long as there is no bus. read more

Castro's is a regular for my local eating out. Decent price, decent food, and decent location. Nothing 'shines' about Castro's, but I have few complaints. I used to love this place. The shrimp burrito is delish. Might be my own fault since I stopped eating meat but their veggie burrito is not good. They use frozen veggies which I am surprised. Nothing compares. You'd think, in a city with a rather bustling Latin community, that there would be an abundance of great Mexican cuisine. But there really isn't. This place is totally unassuming, buried in the Clinton Hill area, with little signage, and certainly has the best Mexican food that I've ever tasted. It is authentic, and though delivery, takeout, and service can be slow, you will not have better guacamole, chips and salsa, nor any main dish they prepare. I believe Castros is family-owned and run, frequented by Pratt students looking for a beer and a taco after long nights drawing or drinking, and I'm always surprised to find that it is one of the best kept secrets of the Clinton Hill/Bed-Stuy area. The food here is cheap, which I really appreciated. (You know that "cheap" is one of the essentials in my: "Legit Mexican Food Rubric," right?) My friends love the margaritas here. I myself was not too impressed though. Perhaps I've been spoiled by Stone Street's Mad Dog and Beans margaritas, but these just tasted like someone mixed powder and ice and tequila together. I felt like if I had more than one, Bloomberg would be after me for my sugar intake. But a fine place to have chips, some tacos, and beers. Plus, there's an outdoor patio! I'm so thankful that this place is still in the neighborhood. It's been my go-to for years because the food is consistently yummy and it's great for big groups. The shrimp quesadillas are to die for!!! They season and grill their shrimp to perfection so the tacos, flautas, enchiladas or burritos with shrimp are always good choices. Their Chicken tinga and carnitas are also good meats for burritos or tacos. I like their mole sauce or salsa verde. For platos quesadillas and enchiladas are my faves. They come with all the fixins including guacamole, sour cream, rice and beans (which are very flavorful) and they bring you red and green salsa for the table. They are not skimpy with their portions here. No dainty food here, it's pretty authentic. Good happy hour drinks too. read more

We came here for lunch after a morning of touring Pratt. Daughter ordered the Spicy Chicken with Rice and Beans and loved it. She thought it was nice and spicy. I ordered the Eggs Chilaquiles with Green sauce. I liked it but was a little disappointed that the green sauce was not spicy. I got accustomed to eating green sauce with a kick. :). Hubs ordered the Spicy Goat and Beef Tongue Taco and loved it. I also ordered the Nescafe Frappe and thought it was perfect for a hot day! We also ordered Mexican Corn and liked it a lot. Service was friendly but we had a hard time flagging the waitress down for our check even though the place was practically empty. Will definitely return when in the area! read more

i lived three blocks from this place for two years and now i am really missing it. it's been a goal of mine to try almost everything on the menu, and man, this is one extensive list. i think i'm about half way there, which says a lot and i've never been disappointed. my go to meal is ground beef burrito & fresh papaya juice. i also enjoy the cemitas, chorizo breakfast burrito, quesadillas, dulce de leche cake, etc. anything really. even the horchata is pretty decent. i still haven't had horchata the way i like it, sweet and granular, but castro's is respectable. also the staff is super nice and i've had experiences eating in and taking out. the kitchen has always been quick with my orders. sometimes i would even just come in to pick up a fruit cup; they're way cheaper and better there than associated. in warmer weather, eat out in the backyard; it's a cute little world out there. inside is kind of dirty and the fruit flies tend to hang out there. but yeah. the menu is insane but as far as i can tell it's all good. love this place. read more

Let me start by saying I've never actually been to Castro's...I have only ordered their food for delivery. Their food is pretty awesome and you get a good amount of food for a really reasonable price. I've had a bunch of their food from the Nachos, Quesadillas, Burritos, Enchiladas, Flautas and much more. They never seem to let me down and always satisfy my craving for good Mexican food. The delivery is really quick...more often then not they are at my apartment in 15 minutes or less with my food still hot. Castro's rocks! read more

Cheap - as in $8 for a veggie enchilada platter. With rice and beans, you need not eat more! (though the free chips and very good salsa at the start of the meal are nice! as are the free refills). But...the veggies in my enchilada (and veggie burrito) are from a can, or if they are fresh, they are waaayyy overcooked. Decent margaritas. Nice atmosphere and occasional wi-fi signal from somewhere nearby. I wouldnt say to come all the way here for it, but I live 2 blocks away so hey, it works for me. read more
