I like the breading to the fried seafood here, it's tasty and crunchy. The fries on the other hand are really bland, they also look like they are the store bought kind... When it comes down to it; people come here for seafood not the fries, I had the oyster po boy and really enjoyed it (got about 3-4 oysters, and the the sandwich was filled with tomatoes, lettuce, onions and a mayo based sauce). Cashier was great and the place was very clean and cozy but my ONLY issue is with the food. Shrimp and fillet didn't have much flavor and sauces weren't that good either. Fries had absolutely no flavor or seasoning. I couldn't even finish them all and that says a lot bc I usually finish everything. This place is a little pricey so I did expect better quality food. So small that they tasted little oyster flavored breading bits. The shrimp was some generic prebreaded frozen shrimp thrown into a deep fryer. Rubbery and tasteless. Finally the catfish. My husband and I were excited to order out for dinner. We both ordered a fried tilapia and shrimp basket with fries and hush puppies. My husband went inside the restaurant, picked up our order, and left a decent tip. Once we got home, we began eating our dinner and my husband made a comment about the fish tasting bad. I had a hankering for some catfish and stopped by here. Got the whole catfish with a loaded baked potato. It was delicious! Fish was crispy outside and the inside was hot and flaky. The potato was one of the best I've ever had. It was very soft so I could cut through the skin without a knife. They also use real bacon and cheese. They lost one star from me for butterflying the fish open. It makes for great presentation but defeats the purpose of removing the fish directly off the bone. It was like eating filets. What a lovely hidden gem in Carrolton! I was craving Captain Toms type of food from Houston, and came across Catfish House which was very comparable. You can tell the owners really put their heart and soul into their food because it's so damn delicious! Everything is freshly made. You can see the cook in the back breading the fish and shrimp once you order. My boyfriend and I ordered the gumbo, clam chowder, stuffed jalapeños, and the combo basket with 2 fish filets and 4 shrimps. I would get everything again, except for the stuffed jalapeños because they're literally frozen and fried to order. Their gumbo doesn't beat Captain Toms, but it's close enough. Not sure if the clam chowder is fresh, but it tasted decent to me. As for the star of the show, their fried fish and shrimp were breaded and fried to perfection. Just the right amount of breading and crunch to satisfy my seafood craving. I added a little bit of Slap Ya Mama seasoning on top and mm-mm-mm it was flawless! This place is so freaking good. Me and my boyfriend went two days in a row. Must say he got the fried catfish and I got the grill catfish. Man the grill catfish is so good and so well seasoned! The fries are super hot and crispy and the fried shrimp are big a jumbo. We ordered the same thing both nights in a row. Im most def looking forward to coming back to this place. This was my experience with Catfish House. To start with this place is nothing fancy but the decorations definitely stick to the fishing theme. When I went in as a single diner around 5:15pm there were 3 occupied tables so it wasn't busy. Despite that there were several dirty tables and booth seats that weren't wiped down. Empty food baskets, crumbs, wadded up paper towels and half empty drink cups on multiple tables is not the most appealing site. The drink menu is deceptive in my opinion. It lists lemonade separately for $1.95 giving the impression that you're getting fresh squeezed lemonade. You aren't though. The lemonade is right there on the soda fountain with Coke, Pepsi or whatever. That was a let down.If you're going to hype the drink on your menu follow through. When you pay you're given a number tent to take to your table. They do get cool points for the soundtrack, they had it on a radio station playing 80's music. On to the fish, it was good.
