I've been here a million times. I wasn't excited when they changed their staff and a lot of the new crew members came in. But My server, Nicholas, was the best. Not a big fan. I recently turned vegetarian, and we went here on a career development day with my whole team. The concept is cool, but the ordering style is just weird. It totally threw me off. Our server was less than attentive, did not come back later on to refill drinks and there were about 20 of us that needed refills... I ordered a salad and tried the famous hush puppy sticks with jalapeño tartar sauce. The price was right on the salad, but it was by no means a fresh salad. My tomato was old and squishy, lettuce wilted and turning that orange color that iceberg lettuce gets when it's old. And the sticks and sauce was pretty good, but not like OMG you HAVE to try these!! I love this place. It's probably the least pretentious place I've been in Austin. The Mexican martini's are cheap, I think it's around 6 bucks. The blackened catfish is delicious and the fried isn't too bad either especially with the jalepeno tartar sauce. There's nothing fancy about this place, the food comes on plastic divided plates and the sides are nothing special, it's just a super satisfying meal when you get tired of the soco or downtown "scenes". I was looking forward to trying this location since I love the one on 183. I'm incredibly disappointed. The staff obviously doesn't care and over shares (my waitress told me someone just threw up in the bathroom after I ordered my food). She has forgotten what I ordered to drink 3 times already and what I ordered for my food. The hush puppies are rubbery. The jalapeño tartar looks like it is out of Dr Seuss with all the food coloring. I get days can be long. But it is your job so do it well. Poor performance, poor attitude, and lots of excuses. It's late on a Saturday night and I was looking for a place to have dinner. Was heading to another place I had heard about and, as I was driving down the road, saw this place and got a hankerin' for seafood, so I pulled in. Was a little worried since I was coming in within the last hour of service, but I was welcomed with a smile. My waiter, Mark, was the best. I never had to ask for anything. Mark was on the ball before my glass was ever empty. The catfish and shrimp were freshly prepared. The jalapeño tartar sauce was great. Very good, especially for the price. Catfish was hot and crispy and the spicy cornmeal/flour they roll it in gave it a nice little zesty kick. The sides - especially the vinegar cabbage - were also tasty. Didn't try any of the seafood so can't vouch for that. The joint is very clean and friendly and I love the old school, un-trendy vibe. Used to frequent the north location as a kid but now that I'm in South Austin it's nice to know this old southern staple in alive and kickin on Ben White, as well. Wow we used to love this place. The service was awful today and the sides have changed to individual instead of family style. I used to settle for a nearer location but always loved this one. I just state facts about my experience. I thought about going to this place yesterday, opted to try Scotty's BBQ instead (see review on that shortly). What a blessing. I have no idea why people think this place deserves any stars at all. It was bland...had 3 (alleged) tiny spicy fillets and 2 (jumbo albeit fishy) shrimp. Unlimited fries, corn fritters, and cornbread sticks (aka hush puppies). As I continued through the line, I thought it best to by pass the array of vegetables, past the walnut-watermelon salad on to the shredded lettuce (coleslaw) and tarter sauces (one was mint green, the other was house made and normal). Though I haven't said it yet, now seems like a good time: I would never return to this place. Food was mediocre at best and certainly not worth the 14.02 (plus tip) that was paid. Somewhat disappointed. I've been driving past this place for years. I decided to stop in for dinner. The restaurant itself is cool in a retro sort of way. The service was fantastic but that's where it stopped. The food was not very good. The mac & cheese tasted like it was from a box. The coleslaw had a funny creamy sweet Jell-O taste. The catfish was cooked perfectly and the cornmeal breading was perfectly browned and crunchy. However, the taste was a little on the muddy side. It's not possible to get good catfish anywhere north of Texas, so I always try to get some when I get down south. This place is amazing! We went in still full from lunch, but wound up eating 'way too much! The waitress brings out the hush puppies and tartar sauce before you even order. The hush puppies are long and slender, just like I remember from when I was a kid. The jalapeno tartar sauce is like nothing I had as a kid - it was far better! We had the catfish, shrimp and fried oysters. The catfish and oysters were perfect, but I think I will pass on the shrimp next time. They were bland, and a little soggy. The way lunch work, you get in line and order at the kitchen, they give you a plate, then you go down the buffet cafeteria style. The have great fried shrimp, hush puppy fingers and fried okra. I was not at all impressed with the food. My family & I had a layover so we decided to grab some food at this place. My mom, dad, sister, & I ordered different things. Fried shrimp/blackened fish with sides, salad with blacked fish in top, fried shrimp & fish with sides, peel and eat Cajun shrimp boil, and a glass of wine. Only thing that was good was the salad, wine, and those who got fries as a side because they came out hot. The rest of the food came out cold and very very under seasoned. Sent back the fried okra, mushy Mac and cheese, & mash potatoes for just more fries. The shrimp in the peel and shrimp wasn't cleaned so they still had that black poop trail in the back. Even the sprite was flat and had to be switched. My little sister got a salad so she was good and it looked good to me. Liked the atmosphere with all the signs and the 50's music. Service and food was just okay. To start with there was no real greeting when you walk in. "Just 1?" was all I got. Then I had to wait just to see if I could be seated at the empty bar. Only 1 person was sitting there. They start you out with hush puppies and 2 sauces. The green one was the best. For my meal I had the blackened catfish with rice, beans, and slaw. The blackening seasoning didn't have much flavor. Added salt and Tabasco to the beans and the fish for some flavor. Only saw the waitress to take my order, 1 more drink, then here is the ticket. A little to be desired with service. She never even smiled. Total bill was $23.66 for the meal ($11.95) and 2 well drinks ($9.90). My overall recommendation...try someplace else. read more

I've been picking up a take order from the East Ben White location about once a month for the last few years and it is consistently awesome. Cat Fish is always hot, fresh and never fishy. This has become a new favorite recently. I always have seen it on the way home then I finally decided to drag my boyfriend in there when the reviews said the hush puppies were to die for, they weren't lying. We could literally sit there, drink beer and eat hush puppies with the jalapeño Tartar sauce all night long; they are that good. The food is always consistently good. The servings are more than plenty, We usually have to take some of it home, with extra tartar sauce of course . The drinks aren't badly priced for what you get and they pack a punch. I thoroughly enjoy the decor, it's like you're stepping back 50 years in time, very nostalgic and it has a great Austin vibe to it. Everyone is friendly from the time you enter the door to paying your bill when you check out.
