I called the restaurant and supposedly spoke with a Manager named Sonya; she said next time you're coming through just ask for me and your dinner will be on the house. We were hungry after our boat tour on Caddo Lake and found nothing else open on our way toward LA. We had to stop here even though it was late afternoon. Food was more than ample. The portions are huge as is the restaurant. My fried catfish was OK though I would have liked more fish and less breading. He liked his fried shrimp. Our visit started with complimentary hush puppies which we liked. Salad bar was included with beans, potato salad, and slaw along with plenty of fixings for the meal. Fried fish fried to perfection. Cajun spice not worth the up charge. Food bar is one of the best reasons to eat here. All the beans, pickled green tomatoes, salad, slaw you can eat. Hush puppies vary. Sometimes they are made from scratch and fantastic other times they are gummy mass produced. Crawfish were good, but they are not served to stay hot and you have to ask multi times for butter, did ask for spice- sure it would have a big up charge. Once upon a time this place was awesome. Those times are gone. WAY gone. Let's start off with the beans. They were very salty. In fact they only tasted of salt. Let's now discuss the catfish. I am not completely sure this was catfish. It tasted off. It could have been Swai or catfish from China. Either way it was not very good. The filets were too large and under fried. Overall a huge disappointment. The all you could eat option Is now gone, although that could be a positive as the food was not good. Simple things such as the "David Beard's" catsup was way too sweet and somewhat off. Overall too much salt and too little "catfish" flavor. Goodbye David Beard. You shall be missed. The service was among the worst I have had in a while. One server was trying to service the whole place. She was not successful. I had to beg for the check. I have never had mediocre food and had to beg to pay for it. Hopefully I won't have that happen ever again. Overall I would skip this and drive to Shreveport or Marshall for better food and service. Giving this place any stars is a blessing and only because I seen a young waitress not mine that was very good and attentive to her customers. Unfortunately we had the slowest most absent minded server that works there. Got seated at 6:00 pm finally took our order at 6:12 pm got our drinks 6:15pm and food 25 minutes later. She ask at 6:50 if we wanted a drink refill got that at 7:00pm when we were finished. Fish was warm at best as were the fries. Finally got bill went to pay 2 checkout lines but one I w as in she went to seat people. We moved to other line finally got to pay told them about it. I couldn't wait to try this place because it always looks packed so that must mean great food! But I would say I was very disappointed. I had the fried catfish with Toni's seasoning and it was so bland. The fish was chewy not crispy, cold fries and the hush puppies were more like dough balls - zero flavor. The most disappointing item was the tarter sauce. That was just straight mayonnaise - no flavor. Needless to say we will not go back. Shane's has great fish - go there before you eat here! read more

I cannot think of a time where I was in a restaurant with that many empty tables where the food took that long and the set was that lackluster. Tables around us were seated, and finished while we waited on our food. Our order was not complex either. Management was rude when we asked for our bill they said the waitress can only give it to you. The waitress who has been ignoring us our whole meal. She was rude and inattentive, our food was meh at best. Definitely will not stop back. As for the gift shop, it was nearly empty with lame and awful choices. Have been eating there for years (1-2/month) and only once was the catfish not as tasty as expected. I ate there two weeks ago with my son and we both agreed it was as good as we've ever eaten. Stopped here on our way home from Bossier. I ordered the Cajun baked fish, my partner ordered the chicken fried steak. All dishes come with the salad bar which offers PERFECT pinto beans, great coleslaw & potato salad, and a pretty darn good salad. You are served large a basket of hush puppies to munch on while you wait, I must say, they are just about the best I've had! The portions are more than enough. I was served 2 very large, perfectly baked, flaky fish filets covered in gumbo, a baked potato, mixed veggies, and buttered toast. Though I had no room left to even start on my potato, everything I had was just wonderful. My partners chicken fried steak was perfectly hand made, no frozen premade CFS here..absolutely delicious. Not sure how this place could get any less than 5 stars. Food was amazing, view from our table was beautifully relaxing, and the service was prompt & polite. I love the friendly staff and prompt seating. The atmosphere is very country and home like. I absolutely love their sweet tea and cajun catfish. (and you can get all you cant eat, SOLD!!!) Well now......Remember how good the food, gift area and ambiance was? That's gone! The gift area is just shelves that are empty. The salad bar is kaput, but you can purchase a salad with a very limited items on it for a 'mere' $7.95!! They no longer have the all you can eat fish fillets, but you can buy an 8 piece for $15.99! The fish is still tasty but the hush puppies were mushy inside. They do bring you a cup of pinto beans and a small container of cole slaw. The beans are not flavored the way they used to be. Apparently they have a new general manager, Abraham Terrazas and you can really tell, as soon as you walk in the door! Don't know who they were owned by before, but LEMCS Holdings, Inc. is listed as owners. We had been going here to eat for years, but tonight was our LAST visit. Not worth the time or expense! Ok, I love catfish. This place served overly breaded and hard fried scrawny pieces of catfish. Not hot enough. I ordered it Cajun style...had to put a ton of hot sauce on it to make it taste like ...something, anything. The salad bar was the most clean and orderly I've seen since, I dunno...ever. Tartar sauce is very tangy and good. Hush puppies not served until the meal was finished. They tasted great but...would have been nice if they'd been on the plate with the fish. We met up with my uncle while in the area and be suggested this place for lunch. I had the catfish filets with the cajun seasoning and it was very good. Drove from Shreveport,La to Waskom,Texas to eat supper at David Beard's. Been doing this for years. Very disappointing tonight. They took the macaroni salad off of the salad bar. That was the reason I drove to Waskom. Went to make a salad, they have removed the eggs and the black olives. Strike two. Looks like we won't get to enjoy a meal out there anymore. My family met here for a birthday celebration. Some of us drove 1 1/2 hours to get here. I have never tasted such bad tasteless catfish and shrimp in all my days of eating out! They had 1 waitress servicing a party of 40+ people. There were inconsistencies in food temps. Some of us never received refills. They were acting like we were a bother if we asked for anything. Then they had the nerves to put 18% gratuity on the check in which we requested that it be removed. I don't understand why waitresses think they should be rewarded for poor service! I have had the Cajun catfish, chicken strips chicken fried steak, hamburgers, not all at the same time of course. This is an awesome place to eat. My overall favorite thing is the salad bar with the beans. I get those beans, and ladle them over with their fresh Pico De Gallo of which is always fresh! I then make my way to our table every time and chow down on the hush puppies with those awesome legumes right before I get my main course. I have said many times, I am just going to eat from the salad bar, but It is inevitable I am too weak and cannot pass up those perfectly cooked filets of well seasoned Cajun catfish! It's less than 20 minutes away from us and we have yet to find anything better than here. This is the second time I have been to this restaurant, only because I went with a family group this time. The food was horrible. Just like the first time I was there. I got the catfish and shrimp combination. The catfish had NO salt or any kind of seasoning. Just fish and meal. It came out of the kitchen cold. Friends and I came here, only after the power had gone out in Karnack at the River Bend restaurant (It was an area blackout, just the luck!) Our waitress at David Beard's was great! Very efficient and very polite! We had a party of eight and we all ordered fried catfish fillets, some ordered them "Cajun" and others just plain. I also ordered fried "Cajun" shrimp with my fillets. The shrimp was decent, although I've had much better, but the catfish...the reason this place was even built, it even has it in its' name, was not very good at all! The fillets were super crunchy inside and out, almost like pork rinds! Seriously! It was just not very good. Everything else that we ate, was okay...well, the hush puppies were way overcooked also to a very dark brown and mega-greasy, but other than that, salad bar was fresh, beans were good, just the staples of a catfish restaurant, the fish and the hush puppies left so much more to be desired. And I hate to say it, but one of the ladies in our group actually threw up in the restroom before we even left the restaurant. She said the food made her sick. I've only been to David Beard's once before and it didn't seem that bad, but this was just not good at all. I would be willing to give it another chance, but I don't know if and when that chance will come when there's so much other competition in the immediate area: River Bend, Jim's, and the newly-renovated, soon to be open Big Pines! Hushpuppies-generous serving, good flavor. Shrimp-light, fresh, tender, delicious. Decent salad bar with enough choices except for one glaring omission...NO BLUE CHEESE dressing.
