Catherine Valley Winery is located just outside of Watkins Glen on the east side of Seneca Lake. Mini flights are $12 and are enough to catch a bit of a buzz. If you wanted to just taste a sip of wine, I'm not sure how that works. I am into sweeter whites these days, and the four I tried did not disappoint. I had riesling (good but not extraordinary), Lost Irishman, Seneca Steamer (I enjoyed these both equally), and Viva (sparkling). The ambiance is the best part - the patio overlooking the lake is lovely. We enjoyed our wine while taking in the scenery. We purchased two bottles of wine and one hard cider, and they were all $19, The bathroom could use an update, but that was my only quibble. CV isn't the fanciest Finger Lakes winery but it's relaxing and enjoyable. read more

We have been coming to this winery for over 10 years. It's very small so don't expect anything fancy like the other ones on the trail. Seating is limited as well as food. But they have the best wine and the best view in my opinion. Terrific wine, and great experience We stopped in here and was greeted from who I believe was the owners of the winery. The guy was quite funny and explained about the wines. There is a small fee for the wine tasting, and what we tried was good. I liked the reds and whites but preferred the white wines. We tried the cider in which was really good. This is a smaller winery but worth stopping in. The wines are different than what you experience in Pennsylvania and Ohio. Recommend going here. read more

Just drove here after passing towards Watskin Glen. The place is an art. An old small barn with the vines on its walls by the main entrance. Inside the ambiance was excellent with its French type display had caught my sight. The patio overlooking lake Seneca was to die for. What a beautiful view. Their wines are reasonable prices. Wine tasting was $5 bucks. The person doing the wine tasting was efficient. They got chilled wine as well. Because of the place itself, I'm bumping it to 4 star. Big parking space too. Focused on white wines, and the focus shows in the excellence. The person helping us select our flights was very knowledgeable and offered suggestions that I thought were unusual but turned out to be perfect. They were very busy when we showed up but I did not feel rushed while being served. I am a red wine person but found this winery well worth the visit. I highly recommend them. read more

We really loved the laid back feel of this winery! It's a gorgeous setting - a large barn with a deck overlooking a large yard with picnic tables, set against the backdrop of Seneca Lake and some of their grape crops. Beautiful! The wine was great, the service was great! We learned a lot about the history of the region in addition to the usual wine education! We did a tasting - pours a bit on the small side - then enjoyed a glass on the porch. My only complaint is that if you don't have any of a particular variety to sell, maybe don't offer it in the tasting (or at least mention that it is not available for purchase). We were disappointed that we couldn't purchase a bottle of the Lost Irishman because they were waiting on labels to be delivered. It was such a refreshing, sweet rose, perfect for a hot summer afternoon! Overall a lovely experience! We will definitely return! read more

This place is an awesome stop on the way to the bottom of Seneca Lake. It makes for a great experience as the winemaker serves your wine and explains the winemaking process and history of the wine. Nowhere else can you find this on a typical day. Add to that their quality wines and ciders, and you have a great family-run winery that is not to miss on the Seneca wine trail. We stopped in Saturday for a tasting. They have a beautiful view and location along the Finger Lakes Wine Trail. I would recommend stopping here, just for the relaxing atmosphere. Some of the high traffic wineries are so crowded, you can't just sit and unwind. This winery offers that option. I'm not crazy about reviewing wineries based on the taste of their wine. Everyone has different pallets and the only way you can really judge is to taste it yourself. We tasted 6 wines/ciders for $5. That's a good price for tastings along the wine trail. We did buy a few bottles of the cider and my parents went home with the Riesling as well. There was an inattentive older pourer and a young personable one. The young girl was awesome and told us about the wines (as you'd expect). The other lady acted like she'd rather be anywhere else and was basically ignoring the fact that she had people waiting to taste. Would have been a perfect experience with some upbeat, knowledgeable, employees. read more

3.5-stars. This place isn't terrible and I think it's worth taking a stop at if you're on the trail. I think for the amount of money you pay, you get a good variety of wine tastings and it's more then 5 tastings. You choose which menu, I think it's between dry and sweets. The view is great, there is a ton of space outside to hang out in the grass and I think there are a couple of chairs, it's definitely worth taking a glass and relaxing. The décor around the place is beautiful, I really liked how it was decorated and it was just fun and winery-like. The downfall is the lack of help here. The gentleman who was working was super nice, but unfortunately he was the only person there and it was overwhelming for him. He was doing the tastings, checking people out at the counter and trying to make sure everyone was on track. He seemed a bit flustered because it was Fourth of July weekend but that is the time to have more people working. I felt bad for him and we were a group of 6 plus a ton of other people around. At least he was super nice so that's a plus, it would have been worse to have a lack of service with someone rude. I think it's a place worth trying and I'm sure we will stop in again on our way up the East side! read more

I went here as part of a group. After we got out of the bus, the proprietor marched toward us screaming and ordering us to "go back to your transportation." He then boarded the bus to enumerate the "rules" of the vineyard, which were also posted conspicuously by the bar. He loves his rules. A lot. Other weirdnesses: he subsequently insisted that our group must leave his property by 5:00 sharp. We were promised a food truck, but instead we were provided with Doritos and crackers. I don't know whether our organizers were charged the infamous surprise "cleanup fee" (I'm betting yes on the basis of other reviews), but it is worth pointing out that there was only one wastebasket that I could locate on the premises. It is astounding this place is still in business. One star for next level rudeness. read more

We were talking part in the Seneca Lake Wine Trail when on Sunday we attempted to get our tastes in but with only ONE bartender there was no way... there was at least 100 college aged kids there who apparently go there every Sunday... who demanded the poor bartenders attention. In no way was it her fault but still if you know you have a tour that day and you know SEVERAL HUNDRED college kids will be there really put more bartenders on. Paid for our one tasting and only got one because we couldn't wait any longer. Sad really because the staff was great. Hopefully it changes. read more

In reading the reviews here, we must have visited on an off day because we walked into this establishment and walked straight out! Later we learned that Columbus Day weekend is one of the busiest weekends of the year for the Finger Lakes wineries so we were even more dumbfounded by what we encountered at Catherine Valley. We initially thought it was a relaxed winery with a lovely scenic setting; from the parking lot we observed a yoga class in full session on the hillside lawn which we thought was nice. However, when we walked up to the entrance we immediately encountered scores of drunk people at every corner of the establishment. We were blocked at the entrance by three young men who were very intoxicated, drinking straight from open CV wine bottles and then, we later observed one relieve himself on the side of the winery wall! There was open bottle drinking everywhere, couples making out to the point where clothing was being removed and to add to the atmosphere, there were two sweet two dogs randomly wandering in and out of the winery without anyone watching them or showing care; they were almost tripped over by guests. We only observed one young lady at the tasting lounge, filling glasses as quickly as possible, perspiring, looking very haggard and stressed. We immediately got back into our car and sought out other establishments which provided a much more positive experience. If you are looking to learn about the FL wines, the region and experience a quality tasting experience, this is a destination to skip! read more

I really enjoyed this place. We started out here and were greeted by two lovely dogs and a very high tasting bar. I am 5'2" and could just reach the top. We had great service for our wine tasting and ended up sitting outside to drink a glass. I recommend their boxer cider, it is delicious. We will definitely be back! read more

We stopped by here at 10 am on Memorial Day. It was closed but we were attracted by the marvelous views and could not help walk around. Then, it was open and we, as a deaf couple, found the friendly winemaker Don's sign language skills very helpful. His dogs Remy and Cara made us feel at home too. We tasted 6 different wines and ended up bringing home 3 bottles. After a long walk to the waterfront and return, we asked Don to recommend a restaurant for lunch. Maybe my experience is unique, but talking with Don and tasting his wines was a memorable experience. Maybe like me you think Finger Lakes wine are basically reisling, this winery will surprise you. Yes they have the semi sweet wine. But Don will be glad to help you explore beyond that, these wines are made from grapes he grows, and he is glad to explain how and why different flavors originate. Cabernet Sauvignon is here but the grapes only produce wine every few years. Don is glad to explain. Overall I acquired a good education and tasted some extraordinary wines. As others have noted, he setting is fantastic with beautiful lake views. Also there are dogs and kids, leading to a casual feeling of visiting a family vineyard. The bar is sooo high being 5 foot I have to balance n the foot ledge and it's very uncomfortable. We happened to run into Cornell frat/sororities and while very polite typical college kids drunk which were taking over the place.
