    * What an improvement! * While I mostly enjoy flying Cathay Pacific, the YVR lounge was always a bit of a letdown compared to the other lounges in their network. It had that same old tired steamer of 2 types of dim sum, a few mediocre sandwiches and low quality snack food. It had a separated space for first class from the business class, and all that added was slightly better alcohol and a few snack options. Not a big difference at all. Those times are done. Cathay closed that old lounge and has opened this new one in a different location. They built on the 4th floor between gates 66 and 67, and built a space that is a smaller version of their better quality lounges you find in many airports in Asia. They no longer pretend to separate business and first class, and instead have opted to make a larger space with higher quality offerings for all. The highlight is by far the noodle bar, which is quite similar to the one in the Hong Kong airport business class lounge (they haven't gone as far as to do the full sit down table service and private cabanas like the HK first class lounge, but considering this is a remote station for them that seems just fine). They offer three varieties of noodle soup: wonton, dan dan, and fish ball which are all prepared fresh after you order. They also had a variety of dim sum on the menu that you could also order to be prepared fresh instead of just sitting in a steamer over steaming. I ordered the dan dan noodles, which is prepare entirely vegetarian. After ordering they give you a beeper to let you know when your soup is ready. The soup was presented in a classic styled bowl. The noodles were surprisingly good - toothsome in fact. The broth had the classic peanut, sesame and chili balance and really satisfied. They offer chili oil on the side to increase the heat to your comfort level. (I tend to go less hot when flying, so it was appreciated to have the flexibility.) What an improvement over the food choices they used to have in their old lounge back near the international security entrance. The other soup option available in the international terminal is the Plaza Premium lounge which does freshly prepare fish noodle soup, but I have to say the quality of the soup and noodles here at the Cathay lounge are MUCH better. They also have a small buffet set up outside of the noodle bar where you can grab a variety of sandwiches, meats and cheeses, small desserts, salty snacks, etc. The quality of the catering overall on those is also improved from the ones that used to sit in the fridge at the old lounge. After dining, there were very comfortable leather chairs with ottomans you could put your feet up on looking out over the tarmac and North Shore mountains in the distance to watch the planes land. Each chair had a wooden side table that had a pull out drawer with power and usb power outlets. Nice touch! Overall this is a great improvement to the Cathay service out of YVR. Bravo, Cathay!!!!!!!

Unfortunately, this one didn't quite measure up. The overall experience felt a bit underwhelming. The space itself could definitely use some TLC -- the furniture looked worn and dated, and it gave off more of a tired, well-used vibe rather than a relaxing pre-flight retreat. One of the bigger misses for me was the lack of accessible power outlets, which is something you really come to rely on when traveling. That said, it wasn't a terrible stop -- just not quite what I've come to expect from premium lounge experiences (as its name would imply). With a refresh and a few updates, it could easily be brought back up to par. For now, it's serviceable, but not somewhere I'd go out of my way to revisit.

I saw one that looked like a little cafe and there was no chance I was going to waste it there. After walking a bit I stumbled upon this one, walked a little further and didn't see another one so came here to kill a little bit of time. When I went to check in, I was told that I couldn't be here for more than 2 hours. I don't ever recall being told this in Asia at the Plaza lounges but that was fine. I checked in, took the elevator up and looked around. The area is actually pretty spacious but it's not obvious as there are a few different areas. The thing is, I think there was more people upstairs than there was areas to sit. I went to get a coffee and checked out what they were serving. They were serving breakfast but they were transitioning to lunch so I waited a little longer as the eggs, bacon and other items didn't look that great. When they rolled over the food items, I grabbed a plate of a few lunch items to sample. I had to walk around the area 2 or 3 times to finally find an open seat. I sat down and tried the plate I just put together. It was OK, nothing really stood out from it. They also offered some free drinks. I didn't really pay to much attention to it as I was satisfied with my coffee. There were a few TVs and there was a nice view overlooking the airport. The lounge looks a bit well used as some of the items look like it could use a refresh. Not the worst lounge but definitely nowhere as nice as some of the ones I've been to in the last couple of years.

She asked for our boarding passes and, after scanning them, immediately told us we couldn't enter because our tickets were not business class. We were confused because we believed we could enter using our AMEX card. However, she quickly dismissed us without explaining any other access options. It wasn't until the male clerk stepped in that we were shown which credit cards were eligible for lounge entry (such as Aeroplan metal cards). While looking at the list, my husband noticed the Chase Sapphire Reserve card -- the last card displayed -- which we have. Only then were we allowed to enter. Unfortunately, the service from the female check-in clerk left a very poor impression. She showed no customer service etiquette, seemed quick to judge that we wouldn't qualify for entry, and offered no effort to help clarify the lounge access options. Her attitude came across as pretentious, as if we didn't belong there. Not the kind of service you want to receive after a 15 hour flight.. To make matters worse, the lounge itself was mediocre. The food was cold and the selection was quite limited.

After navigating the maze to customs (typical), while absorbing a bit of the cultureI arrived to a surprisingly calm, low stress process to baggage. Wow, the views are awesome overlooking the airport and watching planes come and go. Our server was really friendly, we explored the menu and made our decision on lunch. They were fried to perfection and were nice and brown, crispy and crunchy and the veggies on the inside were hot and tender. They were seasoned on the inside and had the perfect level of salt to bring out the veggie flavors. Mr. B's Fish was huge, it also was perfectly fried, crispy and crunchy and the fish was flaky and tender on the inside. The fries were hot and crispy too. There was a small bowl of crunchy coleslaw on the side. We were thrilled with our lunch. If you ever find yourself staying at the Fairmont at YVR, you need to give this spot a try.

We waited for 30 minutes, then once we realized our flight was boarding in 15 minutes, I went to the counter to inquire. The cashier asked a woman in the back, who claimed she had already given me a chicken burger. Wut? Told her I did not receive a chicken burger, plus I ordered a BLT and still had the ticket in my hand. She finally made it and brought it out 5 minutes later. BLT was the worst Ive ever had, maybe even the worst *sandwich* I've ever had. Zero mayo, uneven distribution of lettuce, tomato, and bacon, and not enough bacon to make a sandwich (maybe two strips in total). Imagine two pieces of dry toast - that's what the sandwich was, except for the very middle where the slice of tomato, leaf of lettuce, and two small strips of bacon had been hastily strewn. You ever had one of those gas station sandwiches for $4? That's what this was, except it cost $13. I realize this is an airport, but I travel all the time, and this is hands down the biggest ripoff I've ever had at an airport. The wings, in the hot flavor. Typical hot wings with buffalo sauce. Not spicy, very vinegary and pungent. Nice size, very crispy. Fair price for the amount you get. Really good overall. Cornbread (muffin). Really good. Kind of an odd thing to have as an appetizer, but so good actually with the sweetened butter, both were so good. Milltown burger. Not sure if we ordered it correctly but it's just a very plain burger no condiments or cheese (not sure if these were options, we didn't ask and weren't asked). Cooked very nicely. Otherwise a pretty run of the mill burger. Fries and tartar sauce were really good. The Moroccan lamb burger, nicely cooked, heavy on the sumac a little greasy. Not tons of lamb flavor.
