I had a great experience at Catherine Rooneys, on a Thursday night, that I have to share. Clearly, the Newark location is a college bar. As I went to use the restroom, I realized there was vomit everywhere. The bouncer employee Mike came in to save the day and mop. So I had come down this way for a job interview and stopped here for lunch and absolutely loved the atmosphere. They played a bunch of old school songs which was awesome and the food was so good. Alerting you to a possible biased opinion, I have only been to Catherine Rooney's once, and it was on St. Patrick's Day. So I imagine that it is not always as bad as my experience, but I think it is worth noting. I am attempting to not base this review on the line to get in or the crowd, which is what I expected on a drinking holiday. Most important in my dislike of this place was the DJ. Awful. While he played pretty crowd pleasing top 40 dance songs, he would play approximately 10-15 seconds of a song and then switch to another. It was so bad that I thought it was going to give me a seizure. The bouncers did not want people standing around and kept yelling at people to move along (yes, I get that this is because of the crowd and I said I wasn't going to talk about the crowd). I guess my point is that I don't think the staff handled the expected large crowd well. We left pretty quickly. The only reason the review is not one star is the benefit of the doubt. read more

It was our first night in Wilmington and we had gotten to Delaware late because of traffic. My friend took us to Catherine Rooney's because she said the food an and service was good. It's an Irish pub and they serve typical pub food. The food was tasty, but our wait time for the food was not as good. Our server came and took our drink and food orders. This is what we ordered, Cobb Salad, Chicken and Dumplings Pot Pie, and Shepherd's Pie. Apparently, I made a mistake in ordering the Chicken and Dumplings Pot Pie because it took a very long time to make. We waited almost an hour for our food and we had ordered at 9:30pm. The waitress apologized and said the dish does take awhile and the manager comped our first round of drinks. While I appreciated the gesture, I wish they had told me the dish would take a long time to prepare. It was good and I ate everything, but had I known the dish would take awhile, I may have picked something else. My advice for folks coming to Catherine Rooney's and wanting to order the Chicken and Dumplings Pot Pie, ask first how long it will take. If you don't have the time, I would suggest ordering something else. read more

Catherine Rooney's is my favorite Irish pub in the area. While I don't think one can claim that selections on the menu are particularly Irish (e.g., there's nothing particularly Celtic about the "Celtic Cheeseburger" - it's just a cheeseburger as far as I can tell), Catherine Rooney's does serve up a good selection of reasonably priced pub fare. The specials, which are publicized on Catherine Rooney's website, are well worth checking out. For example, burgers are half-priced on Saturdays and Mondays. The interior has a warm feel to it with plenty of wood paneling and Irish décor. There's nothing cookie-cutter about this place; you don't feel like you're in Bennigan's. All in all Catherine Rooney's is a great choice for a casual meal in Wilmington. It's always on my short list of places to take visitors from out of town. read more

A great little pub with a big Irish feel, or so it seems. I haven't been to Ireland yet. A cozy fireplace awaits diners along with dark paneled walls. The service was friendly and attentive on an early Saturday afternoon while the place seemed mildly busy. The bloody mary was good, though not the very best I've ever had, good nonetheless. The crab bisque was advertised in the menu as "...with loads of sweet crab" chunks, but was just the opposite. We fished the bowl for just one "large chunk of sweet crab" and came up empty spoonful. Still, it was good and warmed the tummy and complimented the enchanting company I had the good fortune to be there with. Salads were tasty and their "buffalo boneless chicken strips" have GOT to be the very best in Delaware. mmmmmmm. A great place for lunch, perhaps even for dinner. CR wilmington, is reliable, always open. Take advantage of their specials, everything else is either over priced or not worth it. Id choose another place to go if I just want to relax with a drink. Stopped into here for the first time to catch up with an old high school friend. Went around happy hour and sat outside. Our entire time spent here was lovely. Our server Angela was on the ball. I've been to this place a few times - but something in me (perhaps my full belly) drew me to finally review it. It's a bar that sells food, essentially, which is fine and nice. Maybe it's a restaurant that has a full bar? Who knows. Who cares is more appropriate. I live down the street, so it's walking distance, and can always be counted on to provide the bar atmosphere that I've missed from living in LA (Don't tell Mr. V. that part). One of the better things about this place though is who I don't feel that it competes with Logan House or Scratch's. And so it began with AA, at 5:01pm on a Tuesday, saying by the elevators where I work "Rooney's. Half price burgers." And then a follow up text at 6:05pm "Burgers!!!!!!!" And so we met at 7:03pm, and beers and burgers commenced. I and Mr. V ordered a watermelon beer a piece (yessssssss), and AA ordered his norm. It was a nice night, so we sat outside and the men sweated a little, but as the sun drifted behind the building, it cooled considerably. It was where we stayed all night, and we had a terrific waitress (except at one point, Sprite became a problem) who happily brought mini-pitchers at one point. Burgers! So turkey burgers are apparently, hands-down, legit burgers. They come highly recommended and forced and pushed and if you don't order one you're a bad guy. I didn't want to be a bad guy, so I ordered one. Almost two. But one. Mr. V ordered a beef burger and AA ordered a....yes, a turkey burger. Mine was...I'm actually looking for the words to describe it. Yum comes to mind. Devoured is another. Closeyoureyesandtakeabitegoodness is another. Is that a word? Well, it is now. I added bacon, lettuce, tomatoes, and my cheese as "premium" blue cheese crumbles. Who doesn't like crumbles? Okay, back to the burger. Burger Tuesdays is something I will happily attend again. Mr. V's burger was beef (as mentioned), swiss cheese, lettuce, tomatoes, and sautéed onions. He "liked his burger." He doesn't quite feel the same way about his as AA and I did. As he adamantly states two days later, he wouldn't order it at full price. Although I didn't get too much a chance to discuss in full AA's burger, the fact that I got a message the next day that the other half was AWESOME later in the night, I can safely assume that if I said "Burgers!!!!!" to him at 5:01pm on a Tuesday, he would comply. Oh, and by the way, this place is headquarters for drinking, parties, bar fun, birthdays, happiness. We were joined by five others who ordered/stole/borrowed food. I know I'm just talking about the food, but I love the companionship atmosphere too - the bartenders are very nice, skilled, and funny. I almost wanted to say "wicked funny". But it's nice to know that their food is really good too. Go. Not that you haven't already. If you're visiting for a corporate conference (which I wouldn't doubt), GO. Worth your time. read more

Wednesday is wing night for our family. Catherine Rooneys gave us no choice. This is when they have $.45 wings. Order your wings with Jameson sauce - it's just the right flavor. They are soo good. You have to order them in increments of 10 (a change from 5 that we noticed this week). Keep in mind this place has an extensive Irish menu, too. Sometimes we order the crab bisque - another favorite! Lastly, spend time noticing the walls and decor. You'll learn some Irish history or at very least, appreciate that the owners truly made this place more than just bar/pub establishment. Just remember: Rooneys Jameson wings are a must! read more

Had breakfast here Sunday morning. The shame of it is that food isn't that bad - in fact I'd give it an easy 4 out of 5. But the service is brutal - not we're short people due to Covid bad, more like I don't give a s-- bad. Our waitress disappeared for nearly 45 minutes. We had to go on safari in order to find someone to get our bill. Wouldn't change the tv channel, first because they didn't know how, then it was a lecture on cable vs. internet tv ( I mean, I'm a guy-tv, especially sports tv, is my life!), then it was a point to the tv by a waitress saying someone was watching something else, only to look at it empty seats. Asked to see a manager - was told one wasn't working at this time. This isn't new here - it's happened before but we thought let's try it - it's been awhile, maybe it's improved. Overall, I enjoyed my visit here very much. However I'll start with the bad: I arrived during a lunch setting and sat down in one of the dining rooms. The lighting was somewhat dim, which is appropriate for a bar setting, yet not so much In a dining setting. They are in separate rooms so maybe if there was a dimmer switch it wouldn't be so bad. Also, I ordered chicken that was given to me on a plate lined with wax paper. It's fine if you were to eat it with your hands, but if you eat it with a fork and knife like I did the paper will get torn up and in your food. The lettuce that came with my chicken was a bit dingy as well. Lastly the bathroom was a bit messy with some graffiti on the wall. Okay that's all the bad stuff. The good is the food was fresh (other then the lettuce) and tasty, staff was fast and friendly. overall I would recommend it! read more

I work for Grubhub and went their to pick up my customers food which they hadn't even started to make and then told me when I arrived they actually didn't have at all. Whole mood of the guy speaking to me was very hostile. Called my customer to see if she wanted something else and tried handing the phone over to the guy when it became apparent she was reading from an outdated menu and the guy was short with her aswell finally hanging up on her without getting her order and telling me they don't work with Grubhub. Very surprised at how unprofessional they were, I've been delivering food for about 2yrs and I've never had a worker make me worried about my safety before. Bar was very divey as well the people sitting at the bar turning to glare at me when I came in. All in all a very unfriendly place to eat at or order from it seems. read more

This place is hit or miss. It can be fun when it's not overcrowded. The music is good. They have three different rooms with different music. One typically involves karaoke, the other hip hip in a sports barish room and the other in an Irish pub like scene. It can also become: overcrowded, ghetto, hot, and sometimes filled with drunk near teen girls who they somehow let on stage to sing a Britney spears classic or the deadbeat whose dream has been to sing livin on a prayer to a small room full of wasted 20-somethings. The bouncers are typically mean- shouting at people all night, giving people a hard time at the entrance for what they are wearing (even though the bouncers typically sport timbs and tshirts themselves?), and shuffling the crowd from room to room. read more

Reasonably priced beers and decent entertainment. A pretty large place considering the dining areas, multiple bars, and CR Hooligans. We usually stick to the live band area and/or the Rooney's side which has a DJ who is actually pretty good. A good starting off point if you're heading to other bars in Trolley Square. Also, if you know the doorman's number, you can get into the Hummingbird to Mars area which is upstairs and might be too swanky for WIlmington. read more

I've been coming to this place about 15 years now have always loved the food and yet today I order food from them and when my driver arrives to pick it up it's not ready, he's told they don't even have those items and when the driver calls me to pick something else I try to talk to the worker there who is in a huff the whole time and acts like he doesn't have time to deal with me and then hangs up without letting me re-order. I call back to speak to the manager and she's making excuses and not even really listening to what I'm saying so very disappointed. I ordered the crab dip for an appetizer and the weekly special entree of grilled chicken and vegetables. The crab dip was 95% cheese (Velveeta-esk) and 5% crab. The entree was not very good either. Particularly, the vegetables were super salty and polluted the rest of the mediocre meal. read more

I have been here a few times- its mostly a place to dance/drink. I would never eat here as the place seems a bit dingy to be making food. Nevertheless, its been an okay place to hang out in the past. I had a pretty good time. The bartender wasn't friendly- but she was efficient. My main problem is how I was treated later that night. When exiting the building I had taken 2 steps out the door when I thought "I should go to the restroom real quick before waiting for the Uber"- I also realized I had forgot my sweater on the back of a chair. I turned around and the bouncer stopped me. Stating I could not go back in- Keep in mind this was just minutes after close and people were still exiting I certainly would not have been the last civilian in the bar had he let me run right back in. I explained that I just needed to use the restroom really quick and I would be right back out. Still refused. Turns out that getting an Uber was taking longer than expected because all the drivers in the area were booked- so I continued to beg the bouncer for entry just to use the restroom and retrieve my sweater (the temp. was in the 30s and I was in a dress) He continue to refuse to let me in even after explaining that my bladder was about to burst. In fact, he said "I should just piss myself." Eventually the police came by they asked the bouncer to let me use the porta-potty on the front deck area, that I also had been denied entry to. I know that there are rules in place for a reason. I also know that we are all human and that common sense and empathy go a long way. Its very difficult to explain here without seeming silly, but I really feel like I was treated less than human that night. I was made to stand in the cold and told I should just piss on myself. I know bouncers are usually third party - but many employees saw what happened and even though they looked a bit troubled the decided it was best to stay out of it. I called when I got home to complain and the young lady that answered the phone told me she was "Catherine Rooney" herself, and that the bouncer was in the right. I was not only told to piss on myself, I was then lied to and made a mockery of. This kind of behavior I can only assume has been brought on by the lack of or very poor management. I wont be back, and neither will anyone I know. read more

My first experience was by happen chance...a friend and I were looking for a place to go with live music. We got there a little early, and ordered drinks and dinner. Much to our surprise, the was a live band, which was fantastic. The food was AWESOME, however, maybe a little on the salty side, but hey, that just means more to drink, right? The Mushroom and Beef Soup (special that night) was wonderful and the Flank Steak was delicious. Be sure to try the rosemary roasted potatoes. I went back a second time, and couldn't bring myself to try anything new, as I loved what I had so much the first time, I ordered it again (except they didn't have the Mushroom and Beef Soup) :( What a tasty surprise! read more

I went here last Saturday (10/13) with a couple of my friends to play pool. I was curious about the upstairs bar and wasn't sure how to go about getting up there, I took one step on the stairs before I was yelled at by a bouncer. I asked him if it was open and instead of just telling me it wasn't he replied "it's not open for YOU". He then continued to yell at me to get off the step as if I was acting belligerent (mind you I was sober). I couldn't believe the attitude he was giving me considering all I was trying to do was ask about the bar upstairs. I eventually told him he needed to check his attitude and that's when he decided to call me a b*tch and grabbed me by the back of my shirt (grabbing my hair as well) and proceeded to drag me through the bar to kick me out. Now I'm about 115lbs soaking wet and this man decided the proper way to handle our situation was by PUTTING HIS HANDS ON ME and tossing me out of the bar. His manager Sara was right beside him as he was doing this as if it was completely acceptable. I work in a fast paced restaurant and I work with bouncers as well. But NEVER in my 10 years of working in the service industry have I ever experienced something like this. It goes without saying that I'll never be back here. Saying I'm disgusted is an understatement. Maybe if you hired better employees, your bar wouldn't be as empty as it was on a Saturday night. read more

What a disaster! I would give zero stars! We went in, ordered some beer and shots at the bar on a Friday night and the staff came and took our barstools away! While we were sitting on them. They didn't give us any reason and were extremely rude about it. Everyone at the bar was upset, I thought it was a joke at first. When we didnt get up they actually started trying to pull the chairs out from under us! For whatever dumb reason you need to recall the barstools at least hire staff with enough people skills to not cause a scene. I recommend you never go here. Place reeks of piss. We sat at a table near the bar and it was terrible! Our server, Amanda, threw the coasters at us and one even ended up on the floor. Rude?
