Catons Plumbing has been an absolute nightmare to deal with. Since December 30, 2025, I've been trying to get them to send basic documentation of a sewage main break to my insurance company--something that should be routine for any competent plumbing company. They've claimed multiple times that they've already sent the paperwork, yet my insurance agent has consistently confirmed that nothing has been received. This has dragged on for months with zero accountability, zero follow-through, and zero urgency. If you have a serious plumbing issue--especially one involving insurance--do yourself a favor and stay far away from this company. They will leave you hanging when it matters most. On top of that, their pricing practices are questionable at best. They quote high, then act like they're doing you a favor by "negotiating" the price down. It feels more like a sales tactic than honest business. Bottom line: unreliable, unprofessional, and not to be trusted when it counts. What a joke of a company. read more

For repairing my water heater, they charged $386 per hour without completing the work and also billed $300 for a part that the vendor provides at no cost. They even claimed they would only charge "discount" $3,000 for replacing the entire water heater. I later hired another plumber--DRAIN WORKS PLUMBING--who only charged $275. This is a fraudulent company! My big lesson was that I didn't check Yelp and only trusted Google reviews! read more

I've been a Caton's plumbing customer for a number of years, calling them for major projects with our rental properties. The latest sewer issue at my rental property, however, has been a major stressor for us both in terms severity of the issue and its financial impact. Considering the issue of sewer backup, I was under stress and pressure to agree to the pricing structure without having time to think and negotiate. While I appreciate the Caton's ability to resolve the issue in the timely manner, I feel like I was dealing with crooks that using this emergency situation significantly overcharged me for work done considering no use of cost incurring heavy equipment, minimal pipe length (4 feet total) and the length of time it took to perform the repairs and basement cleaning. For works that took only a couple of hours Catons charged me $1055.00 plus $16,500.00 plus $3,000.00 plus $4,373.41 It looks like a fraud to charge $25,000 for such a small and short work. And they was not even reseeded the grass after digging! I am 68 years old and first time in my life I feel ripped off by the company I trusted so much. read more

Our water heater pilot light was out. There are instructions on how to light it on the heater and on line, so clearly it's something a home-owner should be able to do. I tried and tried and it wouldn't light so I decided to call a plumber. When they got here they quoted me $356 because they "know the common problem". If they didn't need to replace something it would be less. I signed the estimate. While I was upstairs, he apparently lit the water pilot light and returned upstairs. I asked what he had done differently and to show me what he had done. He said "you could not light it because you are not a plumber. It is not our job to educate you. I said I would not pay unless he showed me what he had done. He got angry and said "I have never had a client like you." He charged $281 for 15 minutes of work, no parts, and left. Never ending leak saga from hell. Around 8 visits by various techs to solve a leak ended with thousands of dollars spent and a final "fix" that created a new issue. Management was kind and refunded some of the initial, shotty fix work but I am still really upset and disappointed as I now have to bring out a separate company (and pay thousands more). It's intuitive that their solve was not an effective one - installing an outdoor drain above grade makes it so that no water actually goes into the drain. With all of the recent rain, it has been a disaster and now our hardwood floors are showing damage. Don't not hire. read more

They had asked me if I could be available, I told them yes Mr. days work went Home. He told me the crew will be there by noon at 2:30. No one still showed up. I contacted Bob and he's like what nobody's here and I said no. I get a phone call arrogant guy stating that he got tied up and I told him it would only take two seconds to send a text that they were busy. This is two strikes and two strikes was enough for me and to keep my business he me $2000 off so apparently I was getting ripped off for $2000 to begin with. Find someone else. Hired them for to replace my main sewer line and it was a mess. The subcontractor they hired the work out to go the sewer replaced quickly, but they broke a drain line while they were doing it and Catons and the subcontractor gave me the run around for two weeks so I ended up fixing it myself. Catons Plumbing saved the day! We live in an older home in historic Catonsville and have used Catons for our home and a home that we property manage. A few weeks ago we were having issues with our sewage line not draining in the sink next to our washing machine in our basement. Catons came out promptly and snaked/cleared out the roots that had penetrated the old clay pipes in our front yard. They were very efficient and professional and explained everything very thoroughly. Catons performed antimicrobial (mold) spraying. They used duct tape on all the walls and ceiling to hang plastic curtains from ceiling to floor. I had asked them to use non-destructive blue paint tape instead. They said it would not cause problems and did it anyway. When they removed the duct tape it removed lots of paint from walls and ceiling, even taking patches of drywall from the ceiling. I asked them to repair it and they refused. They told me to claim the damage on my flood claim. I asked them exactly how I could claim ceiling and wall damage to be caused by a flood on the floor - they did not respond. To add insult, they charged me $1,500 for what should have been a $500 antimicrobial spraying. I had to repair the ceiling drywall and paint from my own wallet. My mom used Caton's Plumbing for years and had always had good experiences with them, so back in September when the drains in my house started running extremely slowly (enough to make the washing machine drain overflow every time the machine emptied), I called Caton's to come and look at the problem. The plumber who came out essentially told me that, because I live in an old house, the drains would always run slowly and there was nothing he could do, but that to make me feel better he would try to remove any clogs. He removed the cap on the overflow drain and after explaining to me what the overflow drain on my tub was in the most condescending way possible (because I am a girl and couldn't possibly know anything about the house that I own or the physics of creating a vacuum), he proceeded to plunge and snake out the tub drain and to snake out the washing machine drain. After the plumber left, we noticed that the cover for the overflow drain on the tub was now broken and just balanced in place. I was annoyed that he broke the cover and didn't tell me, but, since the replacement cover cost $7, I just replaced it myself. I was more annoyed that nothing that the plumber did lessened my problem at all--my drains were continuing to run slowly and to overflow every time I ran my washing machine. When I had plumber from a different company come out to look, it took him about 5 minutes to realize that, even though the drains weren't clogged, what was happening was not "normal" or "something that we just had to learn to live with"--over time, between the way that my house had settled and the way that the pipes in the basement were suspended, the pipes had shifted so that they were no longer at the correct grade for water to drain without backing up. The second plumber regraded the pipes in the basement and I haven't had a problem since. So I had paid Caton's to not fix my problem (and to be obnoxious about it), but I figured that a lot of plumbers would probably have started with trying to clear the drains and I could tell the second plumber that he didn't need to start there because someone else had already tried, so I at least got some benefit for the money that I spent. Then recently, I had a leak in my kitchen ceiling. Since my tub is directly over my kitchen and the leak only happened when someone was in the shower, it was clear that it was coming from something related to my tub. I had to get someone out to cut a hole in my kitchen ceiling. Once he did, it was immediately clear that the leak was in the drain just below the tub. The leak has clearly been going on for a while because the insulation that was taken out of the ceiling was completely soaked from absorbing the water from the leak. Since the only person to touch that drain since I bought the house 5 years ago was the plumber from Caton's, and it wasn't leaking before he came, he clearly damaged the drain pipe when he plunged the drain or snaked the pipe. So not only did I pay money to Caton's to have them not solve my problem, now they have cost me money because I had to pay several other people to come in to repair the damage that the Caton's plumber caused. Companies like this are the reason plumbers have a reputation for being unscrupulous. My shower wouldn't turn off. We called Catons since they have emergency service and while we waited, we did a simple google search and found that this is a common problem and the only thing that needs to be replaced is the faucet cartridge. We had already removed the handle and wall plate to shut off the water (since our main water shut off is stuck in the open position) by the time the plumber from Catons arrived. He looked at it for less than a minute and somehow came to the wild conclusion that they would need to cut a hole in the wall of the walk-in closet adjacent to the bathroom so that they could replace the entire pipe due to "corrosion" (there is ZERO corrosion btw, the house is only 8 years old). Obviously that would have cost thousands, would have been a huge inconvenience for us and most likely would have damaged our house. We asked couldn't you try replacing the cartridge first before going to such extreme measures. He responds "ehhh well yeah that could be it". He gave us an estimate of $500 to replace the cartridge: $375 for labor and $125 for the part. Unbelievable. I'm not one to mess around trying to do things myself when it comes to plumbing but there is no way on Gods green earth I was going to pay hundreds of dollars to a company that just blatantly lied to our faces and tried to rip us off. We would have gladly paid a fair price for the repair but the experience with Catons pushed us to try doing it ourselves. It could not have been easier. Pop one cartridge out, pop a new one in, replace the faucet handle. Simple. $45 for the part, about $30 for the rest for tools and caulk, and 10 minutes of our time. If we didn't know better and hadn't done our research, this company would have ripped our walls and pipes up, majorly disrupted our lives and charged us thousands for the privilege when it wasn't even necessary. Then still trying to charge $125 for a $45 part and $375 for 10 minutes of labor is just the icing on the cake. After this experience, I will never use this company or recommend them to anyone. There are plenty of trustworthy companies out there to choose from that don't try to cheat their customers. I can't even imagine how many customers they get away with cheating. read more

I called this company and was initially very pleased with their service and responsiveness. However, upon the request for a second service, the company broke a toilet coupling in our basement. They initially advised it was their fault and were calling out another technician Two weeks later the toilet is still broken, they keep telling me they have no idea what they are coming to fix, they have given us multiple quotes for the same service but never even completed it. And now they are charging us extra as they have no record of breaking the toilet. This company is unprepared and unprofessional. read more

The service was prompt after the call, but this company charged us $626.85 for a simple garbage disposal. This price is outrageous and we will never use this company again. The labor charge alone was $408 for 1 hour of work. They were going to charge $510 until my wife complained. The actual disposal also is marked up at least 100% as well. Unbelievable? read more

I hired this company to snake a slow draining basement sink pipe. They successfully got the snake stuck in the pipe and left after saying their excavation unit would have to come, jackhammer my concrete floor and remove the pipe entirely, leaving a trail of mud in their path. The excavation employee came and made some rather insane claims about the location of this pipe, my main and the work entailed. He then quoted me at $9,000 with "$1,000 off for getting the snake stuck." A call with the manager the following day was even more disheartening. He was adamant that his crew had done nothing wrong and that the pipe was damaged before the work. He even went so far as to bet me that if they did the work and the pipe was fine, he wouldn't charge me. Another company came and completed the work for half the cost and found the pipe to be in perfect condition with no damage. A follow-up email to the manager went unanswered (shocked.) It's hard to not feel like this was an extensive scam. Almost $10,000 to have a problem fixed that they created. I cannot more emphatically warn others not to use this company. I was comfortable selecting them because they had a good rating on Google and seemed local (they are actually owned by Roto-Rooter.) Steer clear! read more

We've used Catons before -- never again. Our water heater leaked and called Catons to come and replace it. We were told our power vent gas water heater is a more expensive type of gas water heater and were quoted over $3,300 in materials. This felt high, however I know there is a markup due to the convenience of having the plumber buy the water heater and I was told it is more expensive anyway, so we agreed to have it installed the next day. The two people doing the installation did a very good job and were very professional, however when I looked up the price of this water heater it was $1,600 retail. Factoring in another couple hundred dollars for other less expensive materials, you're looking at 70%-75% markup. I feel taken advantage of even though they claim their prices are "fair." Additionally, they sent someone out to take a look Sunday night even though it was not an emergency. I feel like they know if they can get to the job first they can take advantage of a poor situation to make some extra money. I made multiple attempts to contact a manager at the office but they have not returned my call. I'd give Catons one star however the installation itself is very well done. Called Caton plumbing to assist with two clogged toilets, thought the main needed to be cleaned. The plumber immediately went to the basement toilet and decided to snake out to the street, after pulling some roots to the tune of $390 dollars he then advised I needed another $390 dollars to snake the first floor toilet to the stack. He stated he would go through my shower to save time. 45 minutes later the short 20 ft run to the stack was still clogged my shower was covered in toilet waste water and he was taking apart his machine in my bathroom. (See pic) Then stated the clog was to big and must be a rag so he needed to pull the toilet and use a bigger snake. Pulled my toilet and used the larger snake and then said the drain was frozen and he couldn't do anything about it? Shouldn't a certified plumber be able to discern this before ripping apart my bathroom. There was a piece of toilet tissue in my upstairs shower amidst the waste water now gurgling up into the stall and this BS artist states"looks like Cottonelle you should use Scott's instead." Really, Really? Did he think I was born yesterday? He saw the bag of Cottonelle in the basement not from what he pulled from the soil stack The tech, can't call him a plumber (that would be an insult) couldn't stop talking and never fixed the clog and left my bath a mess. Oh I forgot the ground outside is frozen and he wanted to throw the fecal water into my backyard? WTH? My neighbors would love a nice coating of sewage on top of the ice!!!! Didn't hear from them for 2 days so I emailed them that morning - nothing all morning/afternoon. When I got off work I called them and they said they would call me back the next day to get someone out for an estimate....that was last week. Called Caton Plumbing to repair/replace the sprayer hose on kitchen faucet. Tech showed up and just kept staring under the sink. He then quoted me a price and then told me he would need to go to the supply house to pick up the part. He said if I went to pick up the part, it would be much cheaper. I agreed to have him go & pickup for the extra charge. He returned about 30 minutes later and again began staring under the sink. He then told me it was not the correct part and would need to go back & get the correct part. I escorted him to the door & told him no thanks. Looking at You Tube videos, the job should have taken about 15 minutes - disconnect the hose under the sink, pull it through the faucet, disconnect from the sprayer end & reverse the procedure with the repla cement hose. read more

Our kitchen faucet had low water pressure and the gentleman from Caton Plumbings said it would be $167.00 to fix. He never fixed the issue and wanted to sell me a new faucet. He also changed a stem in a shower and left the area unfinished. His ending bill was $780 and all he actually did was install a new stem in the shower faucet. My water heater breaking felt like an utter catastrophe. Water was leaking out of the vents, out of the light fixtures, even out of the smoke alarms. I was panicked and did not know what to do. Luckily, I called Caton's Plumbing. Their team of competent Water Mitigation professionals came promptly, using a slew of technology and time-tested experience to stop the problem at it's roots, and mitigate any and all issues related to it. By the end of the day, they installed all the necessary equipment to dry and dehydrate my house. By the next day, I was getting a new water heater installed. By the end of the week, the water mitigation had successfully finished, and I was able to move on with my life. Thank you so much! Never ever work with Caton's plumbing. One of the worst customer service and assistance. We just had minor leak from shower due to poor chaulking and I ended up paying $480 for leak detection and chaulk.... unbelievable and unethical way to charge and do the work.... I will NEVER EVER DO BUSINESS WITH SUCH A SCAM COMPANY and PRICES.... and also I have told all my neighbors and family/friends NOT TO use them anymore. Stay away from this company... they take undue advantage in times of need and are not willing to work with customer problems for inaccurately charging higher ridiculous amount. Had to call the boss in the office just to find out that no one in the office can help these helpless people in the first place. What a shit show... If I could give less than 1 star I would. I originally called for a very small leak in my shower handle. The first plumber came out and changed out the diverter behind the shower handle and charged an outrageous amount for the service. I didn't use the shower that day but the next morning water from the shower had dripped through the ceiling and was all over my floor and counter tops in the kitchen. Another plumber was sent out that day to fix that problem. That plumber cut a hole in my wall to diagnose the problem and said it was a problem with a connection. The connection was changed out and then no water would come out of the shower head. The plumber came back to fix that issue and was only able to get the water to trickle out of the shower head. At that time the plumber said that I needed to change out the part of the shower head that connects to the wall and he would order it and return when it came in. After about a week I called to see when the plumber would return. I was told that he could not order the part he said I needed, but that I would have to order the part. Of course no one called me to let me know. I ordered the part and asked that a more experienced plumber be sent out to address my issue. When the part came in they sent the most inexperienced plumber that I've ever encountered. She wasn't even able to disconnect the shower head from the wall. She did call someone else to come and assist her. My shower head has 3 functions. an overhead rain spout, body sprays and a hand held spout which all act independently of one another. None of Catons plumbers had worked on this type of shower head before. However, I had the instructions from when it was installed that I shared with them. During this session the plumber who came to help the inexperienced plumber removed my shower head cleaned out everything and replaced the piece that I was told i needed. Once the shower head was put back on the wall, I still only had a trickle of water and was told that I needed to replace the diverter on the shower head. I didn't believe it but I ordered that piece also. When the new diverter was delivered I ask again that they send me a more experienced plumber. They sent out the second plumber again. He replaced the diverter in the shower head and still just a trickle of water. This plumber did not want to look at the shower head again so he told me that I needed a new shower head and that he would install it for me. I told him that if I needed a new shower head that they would have to buy it because it was working fine before they got to my house, so he just left my house. That same day 2 more plumbers came to my house. Again they took the shower head apart and cleaned it out. One of them found that the water had not been fully turned on at the cut off valves behind the shower handle. This resolved the issue with the trickle of water, but now the shower head is spitting water everywhere and I can't change the functions. After the plumber talked with the Canton managers, they decided to refund me for the cost of the labor that they charged for the first call as I said it was way out of line for what they did. They left me a receipt stating that my shower head was over 10 years old and needed to be replaced. My shower head is not 10 years old and did not need to be replaced. Needless to say I was very frustrated. I looked on line to see if anyone else had had similar problems with my particular shower head. I found that one of the pieces on the shower head needed to be tightened in order to get the functions to work and I needed to put the washers back in the parts of the shower head where they had been removed and never replaced when the shower head was taken apart to be cleaned I know it's a long story but beware. read more

There was a sewer backup and called a plumber to snake it out. He in turn had passed on my contact to Catons Plumbing who called me they can do camera troubleshooting free of charge. I got carried away and hired them. They charged 10K and got 3K as advance and told I would get 5 year warranty but kept postponing the work due to some reason. Then one day they did it and made me pay the balance immediately but did not give a formal invoice for the work done and the amount paid. I kept following with lots of text messages, emails and phone calls to the marketing guy who approached me and the office. The office assistant finally said the system can't generate an invoice!! I finally had to yell at her citing IRS and bad reviews and then she sent it. And the warranty shows 1 year now. I had to waste my time and energy just to get an invoice for the amount I paid. I don't often give out 1-star ratings, but Catons Plumbing has earned it. Had a sewer main failure, the toilet backed up and dumped sewage on the floor and some leaked down into the basement. The good news is that they came out on a Sunday afternoon and stayed until 1AM working to snake and camera the line. Pretty much all bad news after that... The initial estimate was $776 just to snake & camera, which is much higher than other plumbers but hey - they were available on a Sunday afternoon. Actual cost was $1,659!!!! That included the extra time they needed when they drilled through my drain line with their snake - dumping a ton more sewage into the basement, and then they had to fix the line that they drilled through. At the end of all this we had them do the blackwater restoration, to clean up the mess (some of which was not their fault). On Monday they had the cleanup crew there and the plumber diganosed that we needed a new sewer main. Monday evening an estimator came out to quote, said they'd hopefully start work Wed, and be done Thurs/Friday - which would be great, it's a long time to go without water. They said that the crew would be out Tues AM to mark where the sewer line will be routed. Tuesday afternoon comes, the crew measures & marks, and says they'll be back end of NEXT week to do the new sewer main for $9,300. I'm not going another week and a half without water, I found a better plumber to do it within a few days for $5,340. (for you folks at home, that's almost $4,000 LESS than Catons! Meanwhile, the cleanup crew scheduled to arrive Tues morning to do final cleanup and microbial spray...I took the morning off work, they never showed despite multiple phone calls. All in all, they were supposed to cut out the damaged sheetrock, then come back three consecutive days to spray...They missed several feet of sheetrock as well as a day of spraying, the basement still smells funky a month later. Their estimate said the cleanup would cost not less than $2,400. The manager was proud that the charge was at the bottom of his range, the bill was $2,402. And yes - most of the cleanup was from their own mess. read more

I hired Caton's to fix my water heater back in June 2022. They have been out six times, I've paid more than the price of a new water heater, and I still don't have hot water. Now they want another nearly thousand dollars to "fix" the water heater that I already paid to "fix." They are always late, and sometimes reschedule after you have waited hours for them. I have been trying to contact a manager, but no one will take my calls. They also offered to lower the price of their third repair attempt by skipping code violations. I was told it would be 6-10p for a technician to arrive. Around 8p someone called to say the teams were running late and it would be a bit longer. Our toilet was broken but we had no leaks, damage, or water issue. All we needed was to swipe one toilet out for another. We paid $229 for our toilet. The company was wanting to charge us $500 plus dollars to install it. After questioning the cost it was brought down to $400 which was still a lot in my opinion. Initially they quoted us $700 if we had them pick out the toilet. The mark up is a lot. Will they fix a minor plumbing issue? Yes. Will you be over charged. Yes! I contacted Catons plumbing because my basement was overflowing. The lady on the phone was very polity and scheduled me an appointment for 3pm to 6pm. The repairman did not show up until close to 10pm. I was not at home so when the repairman called me to inform me that the sump pump needed to be replaced I gave him the "go-ahead" about an hour later he calls to collect payment. After he processed my payment I asked him if everything was good to go (I wish I would have asked before providing my CC info) he replied "yes I changed the sump pump but the issue is not fixed because the pipe is clogged or broken I dont know but the basement will continue to flod until the pipe is fixed..... Why did he even change the pump if the issue was the pipe?!!!! I called to expressed my concern and the manager offered to send a "camera man" to inspect said pipe. The camera man showed up (when I wasnt home) and inspected the WRONG pipe. I am beyond disappointed with this company. read more
