This is a 4 star restaurant with 5 stars for nostalgia and loyalty. I remember as a kid growing up in Fairfield and then Richmond,there was this special restaurant that had the biggest steaks ever and buffalo heads on the walls. Whenever we would go there,it was always a great happy dining experience and being in Dixon,it felt like a different world than the places in the Bay Area. As I grew up and moved to Sacramento area,the restaurant took on a much bigger meaning,it was my father's favorite spot to eat and it has always been the halfway point for my relatives who live in the bay and myself in Sacramento whenever we wanted to meet up for dinner. So yes I will always love Cattlemen's in Dixon for the memories alone. Let's talk about this particular recent visit. I made a reservation for a party of 9 at 6p. The parking at this location is plentiful as they have their own lot and even during its busiest times,there are always spaces available. When we arrived it was crazy busy and they told us it was going to be a bit for our table as they were running behind,so we headed to the bar to hang out and wait for our table. The wait ended up being over an hour after our reservation before we finally got our table. I was not thrilled at this but I was trying to make the best of a not perfect start to our dinner. The management and wait staff was very apologetic for the unexpected wait,which I appreciated. By the time we sat down we were ready to order immediately after having so much time to look at the menu while in the bar. In our family the most popular thing to order is the Original Steak Dinner for Two. We usually pair up with someone at the table and coordinate our order in that way. What that order gives you is a choice of 1 appetizer -Tumbleweed Onions -Artichoke Cheese Dip -Jumbo Shrimp Cocktail. On a night like tonight where we have multiple people ordering this,all the appetizers eventually get ordered and we kind of just share them all. Personally my favorite is the Artichoke Cheese Dip. Then for the Entree each of you get to choose one of the following -9 ounce Prime Rib -6 ounce Filet Mignon -Half Rack or Pork Ribs -14 ounce NY Strip Steak -Grilled Salmon -Steak and Shrimp Scampi My personal favorite here is always the 14 ounce NY Strip. And finally we get to pick one of 3 desserts. -Deep Fried Apple Pie -Cowpie Brownie Sundae -Pete's Pan Cookie My personal favorite is the Brownie Sundae but I'm usually so stuffed,I generally have to take my dessert home,so I almost always select the Deep Fried Apple Pie as it reheats the best at home. This order for two runs $84.99. I find it to be a pretty good value for all that you get. I failed to mention with this order we also get their yummy bread service,unlimited salad and also baked beans. Once the food arrived,it was all very enjoyable,I've always been a fan of their steaks and this visit was no different-very juicy and tasty and cooked to a perfect medium rare. The manager stepped up and comped all the appetizers on our bill to make up for the one-hour delay-their team is always so good at taking care of their customers. If I could give zero stars I would, the waitress we had last night was the saving grace and the manager needs to be a manager somewhere else , we had our annual birthday that party for our boss last night and 7. Out off 9 entree were sent back for being cold , burnt and completely inedible , lobster tail wash sent back twice only thing that was not sent back were the drinks and the only good in the whole meal the bread appetizer, as I mentioned before we come here regularly and every year for birthday dinners ... and at the end of they 4 hour long dinner that we spent mostly waiting on food to come out Or be redone, the manager only took off the dinner that we sent back and don't want a replacement for and he did half off drinks and appetizers ... Just adding to a previous review. The Wife and I decided to stop by completely out of the blue on a Thursday evening. We were craving some red meat and red wine. Place was unexpectedly busy, so we sat in the saloon. We brought a bottle to be corked, and there was a minimal delay in service. My somewhat inept ordering skills were slightly to blame. Our server, Taylor, was so helpful and cheery, even after I continued to goof up our food order. She handled every snafu with a smile, and made our visit very enjoyable. The food was good, but the service was pure class. Thank you, Taylor, for making the wife and I feel so welcome. read more

I will never go back here. I came with a large party to celebrate a dear friends birthday, and what a terrible experience. First of all they took FOREVER TO GET US SEATED, GET OUR DRINKS, TAKE OUR APPETIZER ORDERS, then BRING SALAD, and eventually serve us OUR BURNT STEAKS. Every single one of us ordered steaks medium which should be pink in the middle, except one person who asked for RARE. And every single thing came out burnt. Like crematorium burnt. The potato skins were soo burnt they were soo hard I couldn't eat them. All of this being said our serve was trying her best and none of this was her fault at all. Something going on in the kitchen for sure. The manager didn't try to accommodate us at all and was almost irritated we were having issues and wanting to send things back and have them try again. We got burnt sweet potatoes but were cold, a lobster tail that was cold and when that was sent back it took an obscene amount of time before the food came back out. The server said they dropped the second lobster tail on the floor and had to fire up a 3rd! I'm not sure what's going on at that place but it was devastating. What a terrible way to spend a birthday dinner. The birthday girl ordered the prime rib, got a cold but hard as a rock END PIECE. Our reservation was @ 6:30 pm and we didn't leave until after 10 pm. We also asked for the bill to be separated so it'd be easier to pay for and that didn't happen. They tried to accommodate us by taking the drinks off our bill and giving us a free appetizer. But that didn't make up for all the food that we had to send back, one person said they're not going to eat at all, don't try to remake what they ordered because it was so bad!!! We had a reservation and went on a busy day. They have a private parking lot, and opened early which was nice. However everything went South after we arrived and were seated. Our young, male server (name unknown) was slow and forgetful. But he was nice and apologetic. The steaks and salmon were charred beyond belief! The steaks (requested to be medium well) were burned and black on the top and bottom. They were sent back, and burned the same way the 2nd time as well. Literally HARD to the touch. It was so bad I thought maybe the server put the order in as well done - even then they were burned. He said he hadn't. The salmon was grilled so hard that the grill marks were hard to the touch - and I do mean hard. Another of our party ordered prime rib instead the 2nd time, but received steak. The fire was obviously too high for cooking which rendered everything burned so badly they were black, hard, and overcooked. When the 2nd round of steaks and salmon came out the same way we were floored! The lobster was cold, and our party requested no bacon on the loaded potatoes but yes, you guessed it, they had bacon. It was a terrible experience and a super long wait for meals to arrive at the table. This was not our typical experience here so we were very surprised. I had requested this place for my special dinner but this experience totally ruined it. We couldn't eat any of it. Mary the manager came and apologetically took the food away. Cattlemens, what a colossal let down. We dined here on a Saturday night around 8pm. The wait was about 25 minutes. After the quoted time period was up they offered us an oversize table or we could wait an additional amount of time to be sat in a booth. At this point we were very hungry and opted for the 6 top table. My husband ordered a rodeo burger medium, I opted to only get a salad and a baked potato. We waited 40 minutes for his burger to come out, when it did the bun was completely soggy and edges melting into the hamburger patty, the burger was also well done rather than medium. By this point, we didn't want to send the burger back and wait an additional amount of time to get this corrected. The baked potato never arrived. Our server was slammed with getting food out to her other tables and frustrated, we opted to just leave, food uneaten. Thankfully we ordered dessert first and had bread to fill our appetites. Wait was 30 minutes for dining but they had open bar seating we were welcome to. They have a lot of space in the bar and despite being busy, we found an open high top. Our server was Taylor and she was fantastic. Appetizer 5/5 Complimentary bread 5/5 served almost immediately after Taylor took our order. Warm bread, slightly cold butter melted onto it pretty quick. 5/5 Calamari Large serving, crispy and flavorful but batter was surprisingly light with a perfect crunch, absolutely delicious! Both rings and tentacles and one of my new faves. Dipped in the tartar sauce but the cocktail sauce had a hint of horseradish kick to it. 4/5 Brussels crispy and beautifully presented, and well cooked and seasoned with a crisp finish but would've loved a little more sweetness to it. Still super solid. 4/5 All you can eat salad -still love this concept! Didn't finish it so didn't need a refill but the iceberg, onions, croutons and cherry tomatoes were enough. 5/5 Rustler ribeye (14 oz) shared with the hubs. Came with a potato side and baked beans. Got a loaded baked potato and also got a side of mash because fluffy Mel was in charge today and wanted to compare both. Mashed wins! Split between the two of us was still plenty of food. The ribeye was cooked medium rare and had rich flavor and not too much fat. 4/5 Side of mashed potatoes - side serving was a bit small and also served room temp, but it was still good. We both actually preferred it over the baked potato this time. 2/5 side of button mushrooms - there was a bit of a vinegar type of taste to these, where I'd prefer garlic. Made a reservation for a party of 10. We were sat quickly upon arrival. The decor is simple and what you would expect from a place. Called Cattlemens. Waitress came a took our drink orders quickly. She was actually great the whole time. Attentive to the table. Most of the party orders steaks, Pete's Special based on a recommendation. Salmon, a burger, and mushroom ravioli were a few other dishes that were ordered. The steaks were hit an miss between everyone. One person's was very rare and not medium. Cattlemens does not disappoint and the Dixon location is only about 15 minutes from my home. I have been going to Cattlemens since I was a child with my parents, and the iconic buffalo head is still in the dining room. We really enjoy their Happy Hour selections, and now that we are retired, we can take advantage of this much more often. I wish their beer selection was more robust, with less on the Budweiser / Coors selections, but the mixed drinks do not disappoint. Our most recent visit was on April 15, 2026 for an early dinner so we were greeted and seated by the hostess immediately, and Glenn provided us with excellent service. We started out with the bacon wrapped shrimp as an appetizer, and I ordered the Filet Mignon for my main course, and my spouse ordered the Pete's Special. The appetizer was excellent, the sourdough bread was warm, and the salad fresh! Our steaks were flavorful and cooked perfectly (medium) with the perfect amount of exterior char, and the interior juicy and flavorful. The baked potato was outstanding with a good choice of condiments. Our server, Glenn, was very engaging and attentive, checking in with us regularly to ensure our food was great and if we needed any drink refills or dessert. First time to a Cattleman's so was curious to experience eating here. Ordered a martini which was tasty, no complaints. Then the smallest 9oz cut prime rib, medium. It comes with all you can eat sourdough bread and salad both of which were pretty good. However, when they brought out my prime rib, it was clearly not medium more like rare. And was sliced very thin. So I sent it back and I'm not sure how they cooked it more but it came back about half the size as it was before. It was pretty mediocre as far as taste and texture. I must say the service provided was excellent, just the food wasn't all that great. I think Black Angus has them beat. I don't think I'll go back. read more

Celebrated my 81st birthday there today with family. The service, and server, were great and the manager was very professional regarding a glitch in my hamburger order. There was a slight problem with my order and the manger/serve immediately corrected it. There was plenty of great tasting food, and it all was wonderful. Amazing! Our server Bridget was the best. The service was on point, we did not need to ask for anything. We arrive in New Year's Day, party of 3 @ 7:30pm. Sat right away in the main dining area. No loud music and we could actually hear each other talking, what a nice change of pace from many restaurants! We decided to get a few beers and the tumbleweed onion. Yum! We shared a New York strip and bacon wrapped shrimp and our son got the Pete's Jrs special with the kids berry smoothie. (Our son mentioned at least 8 times how delicious the smoothie was!) our server was super sweet and our food came out quickly. I hope they open a Cattlemans in Marin County, because I LOVE Cattlemens. It's one of the few restaurant chains out there where you leave feeling satisfied because the food is quality, plentiful, and the service is kind and attentive. I love their bread, salad, and drink selection as well, as those are all just the perfect combo to prime before diving into a delicious and well prepared and cooked steak. I like their special that includes a smaller steak, side of your choice (I always upgrade to the twice baked potato because it is DELISH) and it includes a soft drink (diet coke ftw). The seating is comfortable and the ambiance is super duper cozy. The bar area is great for waiting, and there are tvs always playing a current sports game. Bathrooms are clean, parking is plentiful. It's a fantastic chain, and I hope one opens closer to us here in Marin County. read more

Three of us went for happy hour for drinks and meal in the bar. We had a 10% off coupon from the University Hotel (which we discussed with the server when we sat down, which she forgot about when we paid out $80 bill). One of us that the lamb, one the brochette and one of us had the brochette with a bowl of soup. We each had margaritas - couldn't taste any tequila so we ordered another round and 100% no buzz. My Disney and I can usually have one and feel the alcohol, but absolutely nothing! The server was difficult to catch her attention when there was no spoon when the soup was served and again when it was discovered the soup wasn't hot, When she brought it back there was a French fry in the soup, and this time when she returned the spoon was at the bottom of the bowl. After paying the bill one of us noticed the 10% off wasn't on the check, but the server COMPLETELY ignored us now that she thought she was done with us. One of us went to the front desk for help and we were told that we needed to address that with the server. When we finally flagged her down, she said she'd have to have a manager take care of it. Eventually she returned with the original receipt and a new one, stating it had been taken care of. We made the mistake of believing her but as we left the restaurant I looked at the receipts and they were identical so I went back inside. She ASSURED me it was taken care of. With no proof we left. The person who paid pulled up house credit card app and saw that the charge indeed was still $80. What a joke! I love Cattlemen's each location provides excellent value, consistently good service and food offering. My husband started with a Cadillac Margherita which he sad was tasty. We ordered 6 oz sirloin with fries and I ordered the 12 oz prime rib $39.99. Our meal came with a crisp green salad with choice of salad dressings. The salad was ample, allowing each two servings and we could have ordered more. Croutons, tomatoes, cucumbers, red onions and cherry tomatoes. Added is a small loaf of warm French bread and butter. Together, Yum! The sirloin steak was cooked perfectly but it wasn't very tender and the meat tasted grizzly. Not ideal. My prime rib was ordered medium and came out medium rare. Totally ok for warming up at home since we were kind of full from salad and bread. Due to the prime rib being undercooked, I didn't get to enjoy during our meal. The sides that were more well done, were flavorful, tender and moist. Adding to the cowboy start are a small bowl of yummy baked beans which come with every meal. The service is efficient and warm. We had our anniversary dinner here on a Wednesday night. It was our first time eating here. We were greeted right away and seated shortly after. We did have a reservation so I recommend you make one when you decide to visit. We got to a private and cozy booth. Our server, Tara, welcomed us and recommended our drinks, a Legendary Margarita and the Mojito. She brought us water while we waited. Served us some sourdough. Tara recommended the Rustler Spud with my Cowboy Steak and was not disappointed. It was very creamy and seasoned just right. My lady ordered the steak and bacon wrapped shrimp. Although the shrimp was a little lack luster, it was good. In the middle of our meal, we were surprised with champagne from our server, Tara. We ended the night with a slice of cheesecake. Which was very creamy and fluffy. Highly recommend it. Throughout the night, Tara would come check in on us. We noticed when she would swing by to check on us but would not interrupt us if we were talking. That was really great to experience. Found this place on the way into Sacramento State for a baseball game 2 weeks ago. Heard great things and was super excited to try as the customer service was something to rave about. It was a Sunday about 5 o'clock and a family of five. We were seated right away which I was impressed because it seemed super busy. Its a little dark inside, it was cute to see all the older customers with their flashlight out to read the menu. We started with the tumbleweed onions, which were of course great cause you can't go wrong with fried onions. Also had the brussels sprouts which were great as well. My son ordered the beef ribs off the kids menu, which were super big and it comes with two. My oldest got the T-bone steak medium well, No complaints. Basic steak. I got the ribeye medium which was good! My husband got the porter house medium. The salad was your typical house salad nothing special. Dressings were okay. The sides were very underwhelming. The ranch beans were lacking flavor and cold, and only one of us got them as they forgot the rest for the table. But we weren't missing them. As for the service, I was super disappointed in. I had high hopes as all the reviews raved about service. We asked our server what the difference between the steaks were and she could not tell us. We just assume the Porterhouse was the best of the best being that it was high on the list. After we received our food, we were never checked back on. Until we asked for our server and no one could find her. Upon eating, my husband steak, was cooked to rare by the time our server came back and we told her our table was pretty much done eating. We showed her the steak she said that she would fix it and they ended up just boxing it up to go as we were all done. What was really the icing on top is when we got home and we opened our boxes. it looked like they just threw his steak on the grill and even included the fatty pieces he had chewed up. So glad we came here , it's been years . Steak was yummy. My husband's prime rib was super tender and juicy . All you can eat salad is awesome. The warm sourdough bread was good. Our waiter was super nice and very attentive. We set up reservations online, a Friday night, and had no problem getting it. The restaurant dining area was super clean, however, the bathroom was pretty dirty and needed some attention. Can't wait to go back for another meal. read more

Eh, time to update the review and unfortunately not for the better. We live in Dixon, but only come to Cattlemens for special occasions, such as a birthday-altogether maybe 2-3 times per year. Until now, there were times when the service was great and others mediocre, but overall we had no major complaints. Tonight's visit was the worst so far. First thing we noticed were garbage bags and waste (some wood scraps and metal?) just sitting on top of the roof above the entrance. Not great for first impressions. We had no reservations, but it was Monday so we got seated quickly in the back, in the not-so-busy area. Not sure if this is where the non-reservations get seated since the front of the room looked much more lively. Anyway, our server came by shortly and took drink orders. We couldn't help but notice that she was definitely not of legal drinking age, so it didn't come as a surprise that she wasn't knowledgeable about beers they carry on tap. After the drinks, we ordered two appetizers and shortly after put our order in for the main course. Our server brought the salad and the bread, but the appetizers did not come out. She didn't bother to check if we needed anything during the half hour we waited or even tried to explain what is taking so long. About 40 minutes later, we got our main courses. At that time our server realized we didn't even get the appetizers, but instead of an apology, she just concluded that "someone was supposed to bring them" and "generously" offered to take them off the bill. The steak which I ordered medium, was definitely more on a medium-well or even well-done side, to which the server agreed with me and asked if I wanted another. Since I'd hate for the food to go to waste, I said it was fine and I'll take it as is, even though it is not to my liking because I don't want it to end up in trash (hopefully not on top of the roof by entrance). To be clear, I wasn't expecting to be fully comped for the overdone steak (which I was about to eat,) but some sort of a good will gesture-like a free drink-would be welcome. However, that didn't happen and all I got was a blank stare. I can't say this was an utmost terrible experience, but we are definitely used to more from Cattlemens'. Especially because it was a birthday dinner and our server didn't even try to find that out. Young servers are great, as long as they have some experience to lead them and proper training. For ours', seems like she didn't get either. It might've been just a bad night or we were unlucky to have an inexperienced server, but definitely won't hurry back to Cettlemens' after tonight's experience. Great service can make a good dinner memorable, and that's exactly what our server Cayden did for us. We were a party of 8, including two children under 4. Cayden handled everything with ease. He was attentive without hovering, checked in with us often, and somehow seemed to anticipate what we needed before we even asked. Our orders changed a couple times throughout the evening (another appetizer here, an extra bowl of salad there, few to-go boxes at the end), and he stayed completely on top of it. Our glasses were always full, everything arrived quickly, and the whole experience felt smooth and relaxed. The food was great too. The fried calamari was crispy and delicious, and the salad was fresh. I was impressed that Cayden even remembered the creamy horseradish i had casually mentioned towards the end of placing our order. Cayden was friendly, warm, and genuinely welcoming the whole evening. It's rare to come across someone so thoughtful. We always look forward to seeing him and try to sit in his section whenever we visit. read more

My husband and I love coming to Cattlemen's! The old country ranch decor is the best along with the private booths. This particular time we came was so busy, we opted to eat in the bar so we didn't have to wait long. The service was great! Didn't catch the guys name (young red head guy). AMAZING service!! Food was also delicious, as usual!! We did the Original Steak Dinners for Two. The price is very fair for everything you get. Probably one of our favorite steakhouses!! read more
