CAVA makes Chipotle look so 2016. This place is like the mediterranean cousin of Chipotle-- build your own creative bowls, but on a whole different level. I literally can't get enough of this place. Like many people, I love all of the healthy fast-casual joints across the city. But sometimes, paying close to $15 for a small grain bowl and a side of chicken just won't cut it. Thats where CAVA comes in. For $10.75, you get a base of salad, rice (or a combo of the two), a protein of choice, three hummus/ dips, one sauce and then literally as many and as much toppings as you want. If they don't put enough banana peppers in there, ask for more, they'll scoop some more on. If you want three more spoonfuls of that cucumber salad, yep, they can do that too. AND THEY ENVER UP-CHARGE YOU. This is literally revolutionary. I consistently walk out of here with a bowl that weighs about 5 pounds and am never disappointed by the quality of the food. The protein options are always juicy and flavorful, and the different toppings they have really give the bowls that mediterranean flavor. My favorite sauce is the cucumber tzatziki. It's a fresh and creamy dressing that makes the entire dish taste so yummy. Go to CAVA if you care about your wallet but also don't want to be hungry an hour after eating dinner. Even though I love Cava this is the 3rd my order has been messed up at this location! I usually go in and order inside but when I order on the App my order is always incomplete. I placed my order at 12:15 and it said the order would be ready for pick up at 2:15! I ordered the lemon chicken, I got spicy chicken instead! My order was missing lentils, corn, Persian cucumber, splendid green and pickled onions. Total disappointment when I got back to the office and sat to eat my meal. I feel like this location is one of the busiest specially during lunch time and it's understaffed. I love the food but the service is poor. And there were alot of unsatisfied customers. The fact that by the time I picked up my food so many items on the menu were sold out speaks volume to their demands. Nevertheless it's best to order in store. I was definitely intimidated at first. The long line which was out the door during lunch time no less. It went fairly quick. From standing outdoor to the time I got to order was roughly 15 minutes. The selection of options were definitely a lot to choose from. If I wasn't rushed with people standing behind me I'd ask for a small taste or recommendation. It was so busy that the ordering area just seemed like a mess, felt like there was no organization but they knew what they were doing. Customer service was good so I was happy about that. Now let's talk about the food. I was disappointed needless to say. All that time only to see hair in my food. It was short so I definitely knew it was not mine. Is it bad that I'm still thinking about this salad/bowl 4 days later? #greekobsessed In terms of fast casual food, these 'bowl' places are popping up all over the place, in cities and suburbs alike - I'm definitely not a stranger to the concept. But if I'm being honest, this is my preference 100% of the time when looking for a quick bite. I can eat greek food (or greek inspired food) every day and never get sick of it. I was in the city with my husband for an appointment, and had about 40 minutes to grab a quick lunch. Cava was right around the corner, with fantastic reviews, and a line out the door - I figured it was a safe bet. As I mentioned, the line snaked all around the restaurant, up the stairs, and out the door. I figured it would move quickly, and that I would take the food to go. It ended up only taking 10 minutes to get up to the order section (and about 1 minute to go through the process and get my food!). I perused their app while waiting in line, checking out all the options/add-ins (beautiful app design, by the way). By the time I got up to the counter I knew exactly what I wanted, and I'll list out my order below. My order: Greens (super greens) and grain (brown rice) with Falafel. For toppings I opted for diced cucumbers, tomato + onion, pickled onions, kalamata olives, and tomato + cucumber. The dips (you get 3) I picked eggplant + red pepper dip, hummus, and the Crazy Feta. Finished it off with the Lemon herb tahini dressing. It was served with a pita too! *I don't know what's in the crazy feta but it's crazy good. Seriously. The food was fresh, vibrant (always a good thing with vegetables) and well seasoned. Not too salty, which is usually a complaint of mine - especially at fast casual spots like these. The staff were super efficient and there seemed to be no accidents or order switches - always impressive!! The total was about $10.75 for what ended up being my lunch and dinner - it was so massive. I've never seen a location of Cava as consistently messy and disorganized as this one. I've been going to Cava since the very beginning in DC and loved seeing them open up all over dc and Northern Virginia. After moving, I've now gone to a few in NYC. This location is often out of options and the counter is not presentable and clean like the other locations. It's not only during rush hours either, as it was falling apart last Sunday when I was there. Tonight around 8:30 it was a complete mess. When we arrived we were told that they were out of rice (brown and white) and that it would be ready in 20 minutes. After waiting 15, they announced that there would be no rice for a while. The restaurant looked like it was falling apart. They were out of many other options and there was trash everywhere (I'm assuming because the cans were overflowing). This seems like it could potentially be a health violation. I'm making this post because I want somebody at Cava to see this and get this location in order. It's the one closest to where I now live. Cava is my new favorite lunch spot. It's like a chipotle, but Mediterranean and much better quality. I always get half grain half salad with the super greens and chicken. Unlimited toppings are awesome and very very healthy- even have seasonal toppings which is a good change up. I prefer the chicken over the falafel but the other meats look delicious also. I love the sriracha Greek yogurt dressing- sometimes it's spicer than other times. They also have really yummy juices/lemonades and Ovenly cookies. Came here since I've seen the one in Union Square and thought I'd give it a try. WAIT: Came on a Sunday afternoon and there was no one inside. Surprisingly, after we sat down around 1:30pm more people starting coming in. ATMOSPHERE: The inside is fairly roomy with "booth" options and a longer bench (although no table in front of the middle of the bench so not sure who could sit there and eat) and higher stool seating on the edges. You order towards the back and then move along the assembly line. FOOD: This is your typical chipotle style mediterranean food, similar to Verts. You can choose a base (salad, grain) or get a pita or even soup + pita. The options are pretty substantial and you usually get unlimited toppings, which is nice. SALAD - I got the super greens which is more of a coleslaw type of salad rather than leafy greens. MEAT: I got chicken as the protein. The amount isn't HUGE but it's good enough for a salad. The chicken is grilled and tasted like dark meat, it wasn't super flavorful but was pretty good. DIPS/SPREADS: You can choose 3 so I got regular hummus, tzatziki and red pepper hummus. You get a little scoop of each and it helps add to the salad. TOPPINGS: unlimited toppings! I got cucumbers, red onions, feta cheese, olives, tabbouleh and white bean salad. DRESSING: you can add dressing at the end (I got the vinaigrette) and even a lemon wedge. Everything together wasn't bad, the bowl was definitely pretty full and I felt full by the end of the meal. However, the overall flavors just weren't mind blowing and a few people in our group said it was a little bland. I don't feel like I would rave about this place or that it would be enough for 4 stars. Again, not a bad option for a healthier meal for those that may be gluten or dairy free.
