Caye's has always been a good place to buy healthy fish from knowledgeable and friendly people. This is our go to place in East County.

I've chatted with Caye when I first moved to Oregon. She's mentioned working with some fish stores in my hometown and I thought that was awesome. I love her selection of fish, and her shop gives me the real deal fish keeper hobbyist vibes. She mentioned that when people donate fish they normally go to a nice reservoir and I couldn't be more thankful because we have donated some oversized comets due to lack of knowledge at another shop telling my old friend that they will stay small and be perfect for a 10 gallon tank. Definitely not the case. Caye took the fish, gave us store credit and also had other customers but made sure to try and balance everyone without struggle. read more

Surprised of the high reviews. I visited this shop last week mid to late January 2026. I saw a large gold fish with dropsy and one with one eye bigger than the other; the owner/woman said oh he came like that with little disregard. I asked how they euthanize fish and she said they either give clove drops or stick directly in the freezer; I advised the later I read could be painful for the fish and she said "no". I saw many in tanks huddled looking afraid. I scoped this place as possible fish donation and I would never donate a fish here. read more

Lowering review, on subsequent trips to the store I've found so many dead fish in tanks and fish looking sick. Hoping they get this sorted but I won't be buying any fish from here. Solid fish store, they have a great selection of fish and plants. Staff were friendly and greeted me when I walked in. I didn't see 1 dead fish in the whole store. My friends and I have been coming here for years now. The store is broken up into 3 different sections. One for community fish, African Cichlids and there is also a salt water section. The store is located right on 137th and Division in Southeast Portland. This is one of the smaller mom and pop local fish shops. There is a small parking lot with ample parking. The staff is super friendly and knowledgeable on the fish they sell and also on all of their products. There is a wide selection of aquarium supplies (Water condition, fish food, rocks and drift wood) to choose from. They have a good size display tank. They have a good selection of live plants as well. The freshwater fish selection is also diverse and the livestock here is healthy and well fed. The store is clean and well maintained for the older building that they are located in. There is also a good selection of live rocks and saltwater fish. The goldfish and community fish selection is pretty good along with the collection of African Cichlids. The pricing is pretty good for the live fish and aquarium supplies. We usually come here to browse the selection of fish and fish food. I like the friendly staff and the store has a very local, mom and pop feel to it. I highly recommend this shop if you are in need of some live fish/ plants or aquarium supplies in the local area. I have been going to Caye's exotic pets since I was a little kid and lived with my grandparents on 143rd and division. As a much older adult I still go back to get fish. Not for an aquarium but for my Koi pond. I've always received excellent customer service and my fish have lived a long time. I remember as a child coming in with my larger fish that had grown too big to trade in for smaller ones! So ch a great experience! read more

The fish seem very well taken care of as they are in much larger and nicer tanks than you usually see elsewhere. Excellent communication and very professional staff. They responded to my Facebook messages within minutes and were courteous and kind. Caye's Aquarium was able to help me find the right plants for my aquarium and recommended chemicals for the plants. This was the only place in town willing to help with my cichlid that I couldn't keep. They gladly offered their aquarium to the little guy and will help him find the right home. Their tanks looked healthy, clean, and the fish were gorgeous. They get shipments in every other Monday, and their fish vary in size, color, species, and variety across the aisles. Gorgeous, healthy and fairly-priced plants too. Overall, the business gets five stars for their excellent service and kind and courteous staff. I'll be back! I just finished shopping at Caye's Aquarium. I'll definitely be back even though it's a little over an hour's round trip drive from my house -- but well worth the time. Why 5-stars? (a) Nice selection of fish, both freshwater and saltwater, displayed in sparkling, well-maintained tanks. (b) Good selection of equipment/tools, rocks/wood, substrates, etc. (d) Excellent variety of water treatments, additives, foods, etc. (d) But most of all, the Cayes are lovely people -- besides having encyclopedic knowledge of aquarium fish (which they willingly share) -- they are warm, friendly souls who welcome you into their shop with genuine hospitality. read more

The staff at Caye's Exotic Pets could not have been any more friendly and knowledgeable. I walked in and spent nearly an hour asking questions and walked out knowing this would be my go to aquarium shop. Knowledge and customer service are everything. All the tanks looked great and almost all were self-filtered (preventing outbreaks of disease). Everything there at this time is freshwater. Covid has made a mess for salt water supplies and livestock, so I believe this was a a wise decision. There are plenty of varieties of fish to invertebrates that had great coloration. I could tell that these people knew hope to properly care for the species they have to sell. The cost of supplies and livestock were competitive and fair and actually I was s as little shocked how low the prices were for such great quality. Caye's also does free water testing. This may be nice but afterwards, the spend a lot of time helping their client guests with a clear analyses of the results and next step procedures for water treatment if needed. I live in Vancouver, WA, but Caye's is worth the drive to Portland. I am so happy to find such a wonderful place to welcome me back to a hobby I love so much! Henry read more

I have been going to Caye's for twenty years! I have never got a sick fish from them. What I love about them is that if I have a fish that grows too big for my tank, they will take them back and rehome them. They are open during covid, thank goodness! My pump went out (It lasted ten years...also from Caye's) so I called them up, kind of freaking since I had not gone in a building since the day after school closed for covid in March! SO I drove over, grabbed what I needed, went home, and realized I'd never thought about the weird strap that goes through the middle of my tank-my new pump didn't fit!!!! My blind Mexican Cave Fish were looking sickly and it was ten minutes before closing, I tore over there, and traffic held me up...It was almost 15 minutes after closing. They waited for me. My fish were OK. (On a side note...do not get Mexican cave fish. They should be left in their natural habitat. Mine were rehomed to me from Caye's so I take care of them, but they never should have been taken out out their natural caves.(Caye's did not order them, someone had dumped them off there). I feel sorry for them every day...even a plecostomus scared them so bad they wouldn't go to the bottom for food and almost starved to death. SO, yeah...sorry to go into such detail-but I think it is really important to support a store that has such a track record with my aquarium. I have a 15 year old loach, my catfish I got in 1999 just passed (it was 20!) and I've done most of my food and chemical shopping with Caye's going by their recommendations. read more

However I bought a fish from them that had anchor worms and they knew about it and it infested my tank and when I called them to ask what the issue might be they told me anchor worms but never offered to help treat my tank . One of my favourite places to buy fish, I've been going here for almost 5yrs. they have a great variety and healthy stock. Next time you're thinking of going to godawful petco or petsmart go here instead! Please support stores like this!! They don't sell sick fish and are vastly more knowledgeable than chain pet stores. They have fair prices and very helpful staff. I've gone there so many times they know me by name and always ask how I've been and chat with me. They also take in or babysit fish if you ask! And their plants are great, always healthy and strong, good variety of them too. The only reason this isn't 5 stars is because at one point I was seeking advice about how to medicate a sick fish and was told my fish only had ick when that obviously wasn't the issue and one of the male employees seemed irritated with me. I love this place! My first time going and I was very impressed! So many fish. They even have SEAHORSES! Amazing! The lady working was very patient with my little brother and I and she was very knowledgeable. I have been frequenting this place a lot lately because of its convenience to get to from Vancouver. It's certainly not the biggest fish store around but the staff is very friendly, selection is pretty good and I have found their pricing to be very competitive if not cheaper than some of the bigger fish stores in the Portland area. I've have great luck with all the fish and plants I've bought here. My only complaint is I wish they were open on Sundays. read more

I have had my tank going for over 15 years and have never gotten a sick fish from Caye's. What I appreciate even more is that they will trade in your fish when they get to big for your tank. This place is great. I have gone here since I was a little kid. They are very knowledgeable. Their fish are not diseased like the ones you'll find at petco. They will help you rehab your existing fish if you bring them in and ask them nicely. Knowledgeable staff. Good selection of fish. The only problem is sometimes its hard to get service because they can be busy. They are definitely the place to go if you have questions. They will take their time to make sure you are getting fish that fit your tank. They won't just sell you something to make a sale. They've probably talked me out of as many fish as they have sold me.
