But there was one kid I remember, he was very sweet and loves aquariums that's why they get the 4 star instead of 3. He recognized me almost immediately after our first interaction and said hey, you're from Hawaii right? Awesome guy, lots of knowledge and most importantly, genuinely kind. You don't find genuine and kind now a days. I spend a good amount of money on Aquarium supplies from time to time, and while I don't normally go to the bigger stores because I rather support smaller business, these guys always have majority of what I need and it's hard not to shop there. I bought a 20 gallon visi Fluval tank and inquired on testing the tank for leaks because I wouldn't set up for a while. The manager just told me I had 14 days without hesitation, while I asked if we could just test it she made it sound like it would have been a hassle. So no problem, I pick up the tank and pray for the best since I know how to silicone my own tanks if anything goes wrong. While the tank did not leak, I didn't set up until almost 2 months later. Had it leaked, could have lead to a serious customer complaint especially after being told they are not liable once the tank leaves the store, they make you sign a paper saying you agree to that has well, I just wish she wasn't so brash about not wanting to fill the tank for testing and the 14 day warning. read more

This is such a sweet and friendly fish store! Very knowledgeable about their products and great customer service. I love that they take (most) surrendered fish and give them a good home. The fish here look very healthy and happy and I always see multiple people cleaning and organizing the store. It's very kid friendly and, again, the staff are super sweet to kids taking a look at their tanks. Not sure about prices compared to other stores - but they definitely see fair and not overly costly. I ordered 6 Boesemani Rainbow fish, 3 male/female pairs, to refresh the older school in our 75 gallon tank. Wet Spot reached out the same day that I placed the order to confirm a delivery day that works best for me and was very communicative throughout the process. The package arrived timely and was well packaged minimizing the travel stress the fish go through during transport. This place has a fantastic selection of fish, it's a very cool store you should check out. That being said personally I did not have the best experience. I went in looking for more information on setting up a betta sorority tank, as I had been trying to do the proper research and putting effort into building a heavily planted tank. They fully discouraged a sorority tank, only providing information on other fish that they would recommend. I listened to their advice and purchased some other fish that I thought were interesting. I paid and realized I had an additional question but when I walked back over to the sales associate that had helped me, I realized that she was talking to her coworker about me, loudly in front of other customers. What a great aquarium store! This place has a great selection of fish, live plants, supplies, and a great knowledgeable staff. From entry to exit, the staff was always there to tend to any inquiries. After having owned aquariums that housed saltwater fish and live corals, a cichlid tank, and arowanas, I'm now dipping my toes in the live plant and sub 10gal tank setups. But if you're looking for gorgeous tanks, healthy fish, and employees who know more about aquatic ecosystems than I know about my own apartment, then welcome to The Wet Spot. (Yes, that's really the name, it's not cringe at all!) We originally wandered in on a sunny Friday with no plan other than to kill time and look at fish. Fast forward to today, and my 5-year-old daughter refers to this place as "the fish zoo," knows some staff by name, and insists that the pleco she picked out winked at her. I don't know if that's biologically possible, but I believe her. The staff here? Legends. Every single person we interacted with has been friendly, patient, and ridiculously knowledgeable. Like, "has probably been knighted by the Fish Kingdom" levels of expertise. They answered my 5-year-old's 47 questions in a row with the enthusiasm of someone hosting an educational nature show. Meanwhile, I stood there nodding along like I understood what "nitrogen cycle" means. They don't carry saltwater fish, and frankly, I respect it. They've chosen their lane and they are dominating it. It's like going to a bakery that only makes croissants -- no cupcakes, no sourdough, just 400 variations of flaky, buttery perfection (fucking yum). The Wet Spot is the freshwater croissant shop of the aquarium world. I've now been back several times in the last month. I've bought supplies, 'yummy' food, some suspiciously judgmental-looking cardinal tetras, and what I was told is a "peaceful" bristle nose pleco that I swear is plotting something. The place is clean, organized, and surprisingly calming (albeit it's pretty warm in there so they often close during extreme heat waves.) -- like a spa / sauna, but with assassin snails. Final verdict: If you're into freshwater fish, have curious kids, or just enjoy staring into beautifully curated aquatic worlds while a helpful staff member explains the mating habits of a dwarf cichlid like David Attenborough, then this place is your jam. Wild pricing. $75 for a 3" (probably less??) fantail goldfish. Others that were smaller (tiny!) "could go for $55.00". I've kept goldfish for years and never encountered pricing like this even at their own store in prior years. Pricing was reasonable in the past. Tried to discuss via email, received condescending response. They offered a "discount" to $65 because it was sitting for a while in their system - yes because the pricing is terrible. Also, very very long wait times on weekends. Staff doesn't respond to voicemails. The only slightly larger goldfish in the tank had pretty severe fin rot so I would want to quarantine a new fish even longer had I have purchased it. Extra work for a fish priced 3x or more above average. Wild. read more

Super disappointed in how customer service no longer exist here. I feel like management or ownership changed & everything except acknowledging & helping customer matters. They have you ring the bell( but only once) and wait.. got there at 5:05pm did a lap, Saw what I wanted to buy, put my name on the list & rang the bell at 5:20pm. ,There were 4 or 5 employees in the store, 1 at the register, 1 helping a customer, 1 who went to lunch (5:30pm) , The chick with the Blue hair walked around with paper in her hand back & forth( You know the type, do a lot of moving, but not much work, went to back, then went on a smoke break The cashier repositioned the" Ring the bell" sign, I said I rang it awhile ago, He sai sorry for the wait & rang it again. Red hair was in the back, heard the bell, walked around the big tank side & right after I scratched my name off the list & head to the door now it is 5:47pm, she makes it the counter, & the cashier tells her, I have been waiting, she says "well she leaving now." I had aquariums as a kid. Finally got one as an adult for live plants and a few fish. I went in with minimal knowledge hoping that the sales associate would take over (in a collaborative and friendly way) and, indeed they did. The associate who helped me, "R" was soooo knowledgeable, helpful, and patient. They did not try to hurry me and they were immensely helpful. I ordered several groups of fish. All appeared healthy as received. Per Wet Spot's recommendation, I did not treat the water for parasites since they say the fish are from reliable suppliers and are quarantined as needed. After a few days, the rasboras were visibly sick and started dying off. I realized then that they were infected with gillworms but by that time, many other fish in the tank were getting infected. i lost nearly all of my fish, new and old. You can't trust what they say about disease-free fish! read more

I recently purchased some fish that were in poor health, but I didn't realize it initially as I am a beginner. The fish started to pass away after about 3 days of me having them (after clearly showing signs of being unwell upon me doing further research) but I figured I was SOL since it was outside of their normal return window. I was nervous to reach out because I didn't want to have a difficult conversation or have to fight anyone about it, but I reached out anyways, and after a couple of conversations the Wet Spot apologized for what happened and gave me a full refund credit for the fish! Everyone I interacted with was super nice and understanding, thanks to Mike for helping me out in store and other folks as well whose names I didnt catch. Not so bad if you don't mind waiting. Once they get to you they spend time talking to you but you are holding up other customers. I went around 1:00 on a Friday. They don't help you or even look at you unless you sign the list. They talk to each other about their fish while helping customers but ignore you. The cashier made me sign a list to ask if they had any crabs. Luckily, I did because when trying to get shrimp and a beautiful royal pleco. I found out that I have to wait for them to call my name. They had two people working the fish and one who refused to do anything but plants, but she did tell me they haven't had crabs in over a year. Nobody was waiting around for her plants so she was just wiping glass and disappearing off somewhere. There were two employees standing around at the register that couldn't answer anyone's questions about anything so we customers were helping each other. The cashiers didn't have anyone to help because nobody was getting the fish they wanted. Meanwhile the employees getting fish were questioning customers about tank size and telling them how many fish they needed to keep together and what other tank mates they should or shouldn't have but they were incorrect compared to experiences I have had with certain fish. They had almost no knowledge onCO2 and they thought a guys 250 gallons was gigantic. After selecting the discus my wife and daughter liked, they were sitting in the chairs up front and said the other customers had been waiting a long time and they were getting impatient. We ended up just getting three tissue cultures and left. I would suggest for customers to sign the sheet right when they walk in so they can ask questions like fish availability. Also if you are standing around waiting, stand on the next isle and listen to the employees nonstop flow of "information" while they are questioning the other customers. Not so much about how many or what kind of fish to keep together but you might hear something useful. I would suggest the store to have employees who just get the fish people want. Then if the customers want to talk with an employee about their specific setup they can stand somewhere else and do it without keeping people waiting who know more than the employees and are ready to spend lots of money. I came from the Olympia/Seattle area where people think The Wet Spot is worth the drive but it wasn't. It's probably a better experience online where you can just get your fish without the hassle. read more

My review is of the online orders sector of the business but I believe all aspects of their business will be just as top class because I truly feel the passion these people have for what they do. My experience: I've ordered from them twice now and both orders contained a decently large quantity of fish, the last nearly containing 75 specimens! Some of these fish are notoriously known to not fair well with shipping but between the two orders, I haven't had a single casualty and none have passed in my care since. I'm sure that some casualties are bound to happen but I'm surprised I haven't had a single one (hope I didn't jinx myself!). Next I'd like to mention the quality of the fish I received: they were in amazing health and as a testament to that; out of the three apistogramma species I had order - as attempted pairs mind you - two have spawned for me in less than a month and the last pair (which indeed is a pair) is soon to spawn as well I believe. Overall I don't think anyone can compete with these guys, shipping cost is more than reasonable, the prices are great on the fish, and the sheer selection is something unimaginable! Also shout out to Kat Laufman who selected the apistogramma and who absolutely nailed the sex selection. I spoke with them in a few emails and they had me send pictures of my fish because I was skeptical of the fact I had pairs since the fish were still so small but despite that they managed to get me pairs! I absolutely love this fish store! I have had a fresh water tank since early November 2021. All of my plants, and fish except one are from The Wet Spot. All of my fish are happy, healthy, and gorgeous. I have purchased White Cloud Mountain minnows, 3 different pangio species, and mystery snails. Along with the quality of my tank additions being exceptional, the staff is also terrific! Every time I've been in the people working have been knowledgeable and super friendly. My last visit I had a chat with Leah. She took the time to listen to all the questions I had about my fish and plant life. I have been coming to the Westport for 18 years. One time many moons ago when Travis was managing the store was the last time it was good. The staff is always unfriendly, unhelpful. Make you feel like a complete bother to them. If you have questions on plants, you need to look it up and not ask an employee, they don't care how long you've been a customer they know they have you buy the balls with their amazing selection of plants, supplies and fish. I wish I could quit the Wetspot. But like a typical Portlander. It doesn't matter how poorly you treat me, I'll come back because you're local and not Petco. read more

First time me and my plus one stopped in looking for some fresh water aquarium plants. Was happy they're asking customers to be masked and providing sanitizer (as of 4/2/22). Their selection is HUGE! We signed up for their wait list on the warm, sunny, and packed Saturday we visited. Quickly a very kind and knowledgeable staffer came and helped us gather our plants. They answered all questions and packaged the plants very well (thick mm bag with acclimation instructions for fish - way better than a box store). We spent more time looking at their huge selection of fish and plant than we did checking out. Fantastic selection of puffers, cichlids, tetras, even air plants. I bought 4 koi angelfish. They arrived alive and healthy however their coloring was nothing as beautiful as the picture they showed. Several days after arrival the oranges were watery and washed out if present at all. This place was recommended to my daughter so we decided to check it out. My first reaction when stepping inside is how dark and depressing it is. The staff pretty much ignored us for a long time so there's that. My daughter bought some fish and brought them back to her aquarium. It's her fault for not quarantining them but they had Ich and half of her fish were infected shortly thereafter. This leads me to think they don't quarantine or medicate their fish before selling them. Again, my daughter should've quarantined them but that doesn't alter the fact that they were infected. There were hoses strewn across the floor so you really had to watch your step. Not ADA friendly at all and if you are elderly, that could be a hazard. They won't allow you to use their bathrooms so we had to cross the street to Whole Foods and they were very friendly and let us use their restrooms even though we didn't purchase anything. I know this place gets lots of buzz but for me, I wouldn't return. read more

We've lived in the area just under a year, and have purchased nearly $1000 from the Wet Spot, both online and in-store. The store is such a wonderful place. The employees are helpful, and the tanks are well stocked. We've successfully bread tetras and several types of shrimp. When the place is busy, their queue system works great. 5 stars. Their online store is another beast in itself. Not good. Terrible. We received an order with an infected fish. It killed 90% of the fish in our tank. We didn't request replacement, or refund. We asked for a discount off our next fish purchase. Best response ever: "No". "You will just do this the next time it happens". The person on the phone said they have a policy and there are no exceptions. I didn't want to argue, so I ended the call. Our goal today was to negotiate a partial replacement online order ($150), by placing a $1500 in-store order ($899 tank, $100 wood, $500 fish). We failed. Instead of a 10% discount, we got nothing.
