We had a lovely meal here to celebrate my in-law's 50th wedding anniversary, and it was a truly special evening. The staff were lovely, the food and drinks were excellent, and the ambiance was very upscale. We tried a number of things on the menu, and while all were delicious, a few that really stood out were the Virginia Peanut Pie, the Venison, and the Grilled Octopus. Wanted to try a local restaurant instead of going into Old Town. What a mistake. The entry area had a distinct smell of cat urine, so we asked to be seated outside. Outside seating is bare bones...but not unpleasant until we were swatting the multitudes of flys away. Constant waving of arms and swatting off of food and beverage glasses. I asked the server if anything could be done and they brought us a candle. No help at all. Food was uninspired given the prices. I had the warm tomato/burrata appetizer. It was fine though I wondered why they made it warm given it's August? My husband had the only salad on the menu and he said it was good. I had the mussel appetizer as my entree which was very straightforward...not worth going back for as it was so boring, and given the ingredients (saffron, fennel) I am not sure how it was so muted? My husband had the soft shells...mistake! Terribly breaded though they were supposed to be "tempura" style. All in all, it was pretty bad. The flies (we dine out a lot and have never had this kind of fly issue), the meh food do NOT lend themselves to the prices they charge. It's clearly a tourist destination and now I know better. I was excited to plan Easter dinner at Cedar Knoll. Having had many meals there including a fabulous Valentine's dinner with a group, I was eager to share Cedar Knoll with my family. $700.13 later I'm so embarrassed.... a disappointing experience. Our table for 12 was way to big for six of us. Conversation was impossible and even our waitress had difficulty reaching things so we graciously helped place food and remove plates. I love the idea of a family style dining experience but the food still should look appetizing and be served at the proper temperature, be fresh and tasty. Today it seemed as if food was in a warning tray for hours. Lovely wait staff. Greeters charming. Location so pretty. Beautiful day and grounds. Having been there many times I know the menu well and the food CAN be exceptional. Today was a very disappointing eating experience and I was embarrassed to host those most precious to me. read more

The building and decor and view are wonderful. I wasn't about to pay $60 each for mother's day. We don't like the food enough. We went the Saturday before Mother's Day. They forgot my dish and I found the waitress to look into it. Don't mind a mistake but they still had my meal listed on the receipt. So I kindly told them they should not charge me because my food came after everyone else had finished and I had to ask for it. Service not so good. Didn't even ask if we wanted dessert. One other enjoyed their meal very much and the other said their appetizer and dinner all seemed to taste the same. Mine was bland but fresh ingredients. We stopped here for a Sunday brunch before Georgetown graduation, and were delighted by the experience. Service was spot on, food was stellar, and the location is phenomenal - amazing views of the Potomac from the front windows of the restaurant. They started us out with drinks and a tray of small biscuits with butter and jam, quite good. They were quite small, and would have enjoyed more than one, but no other complaints there. Their brunch menu is great - I opted for the Charburger, which was two smaller patties stacked on a toasted brioche bun and some crispy prosciutto and bruleed cheese, with a side of fries. Great burger, packed full of flavor! The french toast sticks also looked spectacular, and several of us enjoyed those as well. Every dish looked beautiful, and each tasted spot on. Cedar Knoll? More like Cedar Knoll-way. I was so disappointed with my dining experience here. Despite the wonderful location and view and the great waitstaff and service, I was left with a rather lackluster food experience. The restaurant is right down the road from home and has that historic George Washington connection, so I really wanted to love the place and have a go-to in the neighborhood. Unfortunately, the food is flavorless and for the price points, not even worth it. Got a table on the patio with a view and they were kind enough to let me have my dog with me outside, so there is that. But that's about all that I had going for me with the dining experience. Myself and my friend ordered wine, started with the Oysters Rockefeller app, and finished off with the crab cakes and taro-encrusted fish as entrees. At the tune of $130 for the final bill, I felt completely extorted. Not only were the price points completely ridiculous for the plate of food, but it was as if the restaurant was trying to be "champagne" when it really was only "beer." The wine was pretty abysmal -- both the Rose and Malbec -- and, the charge for the glass should have better reflected the Sutter Home we probably drank rather than the supposedly finer vino experience. While the Oyster's Rockefeller were OK, I take umbrage with them being sold as such. Even if the app was a "play" on the classic dish, it was a poor interpretation. At $13 and we got 4 oysters. Cedar Knoll, stop trying to be New York. The entrees were a huge disappointment, and at $32 and $35 each, a ridiculous price to pay for what we got. Both were flavorless and, portion wise, should have cost half of what we payed. The crab cakes were more like crab balls and should have been sold as an appetizer. While the fish was encrusted in taro, it was completely missing the taro flavor. And don't even get me started on the weird melon/cucumber/cheese salad that was an accompaniment. This dish plainly didn't know what the heck it was doing. The fish was also completely dry and overcooked. It's like they killed it again after fishing it out of the water. Honestly had I not been starving, I would have probably laughed at the plates and sent them all back. With all the wonderful restaurants in the area, save your money for them, folks, and skip Cedar Knoll. The view and location is nice, but not at that price and lackluster flavor. read more

We showed up for dinner on Friday night about 7pm, one week ago. We had been so excited to try this place as it is just down the road from us. We never went to the its prior version since we heard such bad things about it. But then this new version opened, we couldn't wait to try it. We were seated right away on the patio out back. From the road, I thought we would have had a great view from the patio, but we didn't. It was a view of the road and trees, not water like I had hoped. The server was over the top nice; she was the best part of the experience. We ordered wine, oysters Rockefeller, jumbo lump crab cakes and the encrusted fish. Their version of oysters Rockefeller is a fried oyster on a piece of ham and kale. Though an odd version of the dish, it was pleasant and enjoyable. The crab cakes and the fish were just a nightmare disappointment. The crab cakes were little flavorless balls. I don't mind that they weren't 'cakes' but rather balls, but for $32 we were expecting more than four bites of bland food. Jumbo lump crab that was not. The $35 fish was so overcooked that the fish was super dry and the 'encrusted' part had to be sawed through. The side salad of cantaloup, cucumber and onion was really odd and didn't compliment the dish. We felt like we were being served food from a mediocre, freezer-to-table tourist trap restaurant and then were slapped with a $130 bill. Had we not been staving, we would have either sent the food back or just left. It was a huge disappointment and we won't be back. read more

Wow! I am definitely coming back again. The food was beyond delicious, but what really impressed me is the surrounding aroma. However, every time I needed my coffee refilled I had to ask. Additionally, it took an oddly long time to get our food (about 45 minutes), even though the restaurant was not very full. Lastly, the booths are awkward to seat in due to the table height (just try it, you'll see what I mean). My wife managed to receive a splinter when sliding into the booth, and upon mentioning it to the restaurant staff, their level of interest was somewhere around zero. I asked Miss Tina about Fathers Day and she wasn't told yet if there would be a special menu (2 weeks before) but she remembered my request. She knew the name and took it upon herself to get Mt Dew for my dad. She pulled a move I do which made it that more special. The food?!?!! Don't get me started or this will take all day to type. Everything came out beyond perfect from the baked Rockefeller to the crepes, the duck confit, the enormous filet and jumbo lump crab cake, the HUGE rack of lamb and a ridiculous amount of sides. We had my grandmothers 89th birthday here and they accommodated us with a beautiful table seating 13. We turned it into a surprise party dinner and they worked so well with us on seating the guests early and hiding the cake in the back. They even lit the cake, brought it out and took a video! The service was perfect and the food was superb. They even did split checks for everyone at the end! I love how it is now run by brothers who live and work there as head chef. They have recently renovated and are trying to bring this place back to its glory. Wonderful people who work there, beautiful area, breathtaking view and a memorable time. So disappointed I have to write this review, but they let us down. We went for Valentine's Day. We typically don't go out for dinner on the night of Valentine's Day because the restaurants are usually over burdened and it affects the service. I think this may've been true here as well. We arrived a little early without having been to the place before. The bar area was quite small, (which is fine because it's a very old place) and we were able to get a seat. The bartender was one of the owners. I got a martini and my husband had a scotch. Both were fine and we liked that when our table was ready, the tab didn't need to be rung out. The hostess was very professional and even when I asked where the bathroom was, she walked with me to show me the hallway which was very nice. The place is really beautiful. Just dripping with character and history. We were seated in the side room that seems to be an addition, but from what we saw of the other parts of the place, it is very charming. The menu was a set selection of four choices for appetizers, main and dessert. They were really cute handmade menus by the chef's daughters as we found out. They had rose petals scattered on the tables. Our server was very engaging, but the kitchen was obviously having trouble pacing themselves. While I don't mind having a delicious, relaxing meal that is well paced,(and I really hate being rushed through a nice meal) this one was drawn out and uncomfortable. The bread they put out was very good and they gave us a mulled cider as an amuse bouche. I ordered the beet salad and fried goat cheese which was a nice combination of savory and earthy. I honestly forget what my husband had. He got the duck as a main and I had the steak. While it was tasty, I have had better steaks. It was seasoned well, but not the best cut and the potatoes and sprouts underneath it were not really warm anymore, but the sauces it came with were delicious. My husband LOVED his duck. The biggest issue was the wait in between the appetizer and the main. It was WAAAAY too long. Like embarrassingly long.....as if the place was closing and they forgot we were still there kind of long. One of the desserts was no longer available by the time we ordered and the desserts were egh.....nothing really all that amazing. But the thing that really annoyed me, was after waiting a ridiculous amount of time for our meal, and half expecting to see a manager arrive to apologize we noticed instead, one of the waiters or a possible host walking around in the dining room texting on his phone. Yeah, some kid just standing there texting while we're wondering what the heck is going on and he's got no idea whatsoever that everything in the dining room is messed up. How awesome......I call this insult to injury. We were one of the later seatings and obviously the staff was just dying to get out of there. This kind of thing is totally NOT cool in my book. We noticed that most of the staff were younger people, and while most seemed to be very professional, this one kid just wrecked it for us. I really don't want to see this crap when I'm out for a rather expensive and special dinner, especially when its obviously getting screwed up. We ate here last night. Made reservations for our party of 8 (5 adults, 3 older kids). The food was good for what it was (fresh oysters, tasty fish), though tiny portions and not deserving of the very steep costs. If it was 25% percent cheaper, I would think it was about right. The main -- and serious -- problem was that we WAITED FOR OVER AN HOUR after ordering to eat the entrees. There was a good 45-50 minutes between the appetizers and main course, and it was torturous, particularly for the kids. There weren't many people there, so it wasn't clear what the issue was. When we got increasingly impatient, the clear attitude of the waitstaff was that we were the problem. Very condescending and robotically dismissive, which added insult to injury. Because we were a large party, they added the tip automatically, which also upset me given the very poor service and very large bill. For fine dining, I really expect better. Another note: they only seated way back of the patio, which is the least interesting view. This make little sense, particularly since to get to that area you have to pass another patio with a better view and disorganized, abandoned chairs and tables. read more

BUYER BEWARE! - cedar Knoll has deceptive practices they fail to correct and currently owe my over $700 they charged to my credit card in error. BUYER BEWARE. If you book a reservation in advance, and Cedar Knoll later changes it to a special event night like a wine tasting - they DO NOT call the folks that reserved before they made this change and let them know there is now a big price tag to this evening. Frequently they hold their reservations with a credit card noting a nominal fee like $10 or $25 per person - which is fine. What is NOT FINE is when the event change and they then charge your credit card for $125 per person and you are not told in advance. This happened to me back in early Dec. I have been trying to get my money back since. For a while I was getting a response as Cedar Knoll blamed the error on Opentable. But....when i had booked New Years Eve in advance (before they added in a pre-fix meal for the evening) - it would have happened again. Only this time - I called them and checked. I was also calling them continuing to try to get my money back for their error but double checked to make sure it did not happen again. It would have had I not called. Their Staff explained how they sometimes add these nights. I suggested that they then call folks that already had reservations before charging their credit card. They started explaining how they operate. Never mind! The customer should not have to get educated to eat dinner at your restaurant. If this is how you operate - it is a deceptive business practice and needs to change. I WOULD LIKE MY MONEY BACK FOR THE EVENT I WAS CHARGED FOR, HAD NOT SIGNED UP FOR AND DID NOT ATTEND. IT HAS BEEN THREE MONTHS. I have made 15 phone calls, spoken with management and THIS IS NOT RESOLVED. I waited three months before positing this. hopefully they will resolve. Cedar Knoll is a nice restaurant, perhaps a little high in price but with the great view and location - that is ok too. I would like you to continue and would love to come back once I have my money back. Posting this so others are not trapped. read more

The only thing this place has going for it is the view and the decor. Not only was this a bad meal but it was by far the worst meal we have ever had. At 59 dollars a person it was utterly ridiculous. It was a Mother's Day buffet. The buffet selections were very sparse. Nothing was labeled indicating what anything was on the buffet and the items that they had were plain old gross and inedible. We waited a long time to come to this place and thought we would have a memorable meal. It was memorable just not in a good way. Taking a stroll down GW Parkway and the family decided we were in need of something good. Right at that point our eyes discovered a place we had never gone to before. We were taking a chance being that all of us were from out of town. After parking our vehicle we entered the restaurant without any reservations. Management accommodated us 5 @ a table and Keli took very good care of us. The food was absolutely delicious, the atmosphere was very inviting to serenity and the service by Keli did not even come close to disappointing us. I'm so happy that Cedar Knoll is back in business. This has always been one of my favorite spots on the GW Parkway. After reading the good reviews on Yelp, I had been meaning to return. Now that Cedar Knoll is serving brunch on Sundays I decided to give it a try. No problem getting a reservation. They did a beautiful job of remodeling the restaurant and adding booths. The only bad thing is that the bar area is much smaller now. We were seated in by the windows with the beautiful view of the Potomac River. We had The Nest Egg, Rockefeller Benedict & the Duck Confit Hash with mimosas & bloody marys, of course. The presentation of all 3 dishes was lovely. The food was delicious. Our server Lexi was fantastic. We elected to try some desserts: Chocolate Rosemary Souffle Cake & The Lemon Ginger Semolina Cake. The Cake had a very subtle lemon taste with a touch of ginger. The Souffle had a hint of mint blended with the chocolate. It was a very pleasant Sunday brunch. Cedar Knoll is going to be adding lunch service soon and the outdoor patio will be opening in mid-May. Intimate setting, stupendous view, especially at sunset. My mother and I just had the most amazing meal. The chef really took his time with the dishes, a lot of thought went into the pairings. I had the venison, she had the lamb. We both joined the clean plate club. They have an organic Prosecco which is also out of this world. We will definitely come back. Super salty and just not good. Hard to mess up a grilled cheese sandwich but they did. And the fries were bad as well. We also had the happy hour burger. Today we were on a family vacation driving through headed to Washington DC, we were hungry and nothing was around. We saw Cedar Knoll out of the corner of our eyes. We thought, let's give it a try. We were greeted quickly and sat. They're lunch ended at 2pm, we walked in at 1:55 and were still able to be seated. We were given water for the table and ordered in a time manner. I ordered the the rock shrimp, best shrimp I've ever had in my entire life. Nothing was over cooked, everything was really good. I for sure recommend this place! read more

It's been a while since we went there for Mother's Day brunch, but after travel abroad and returning to read glowing reviews, I have to weigh in on Cedar Knoll. First, we've been there for dinner at least four times since they reopened. Their sit down menu is creative and the food is usually above average. Brunch Buffet for Mother's Day.....disaster. To begin with, price was not advertised and to say the least we were shocked to discover that the price was $50 per person! FOR A BRUNCH BUFFET! This did not include drinks. The line was mismanaged....food at best was room temperature and frequently absent because there was nobody in charge of ensuring that fresh replacements were on the way when the various dishes were getting low. Another point that underscores poor mismanagement...placement of the omlet station at the end of the overall buffet line. This backed up the entire line as people who wanted omlets amounted to about 10-15 people at any given trip to the buffet, which backed the line up into the second dining area. Note to "management"! Ready to serve buffet items and made to order items do not belong in the same line....restaurant management 101. Along the same lines, it should be obvious to anyone with a modicum of culinary/restaurant experience that Eggs Benedict and chafing dishes do not belong together. By the time we got to said chafing dish, with said Eggs Benedict, the lovely Sterno flame had turned the egg yolks into solid, inedible, hard, dry masses of yellow disgustingness. Finally, management and staff and their attitude have been consistently poor/rude on every visit. On every occasion we have gone here, we have made reservations in advance. Each time, we have asked for a table/booth with a river view. Each time we have been told that they don't take reservations for specific tables and that it is first, come, first serve. So we get there well before our reservation time. Yet every time we show up, despite our observation that many such tables and booths are vacant, we have been told that they are reserved and get seated in Siberia. Then we get the attitude if we press for a window seat. And these tables and booths largely go unseated for the two plus hours we are there for a weekday dinner.... So which is it? DO you take reservations for specific requests regarding seating or DON'T you? Service is aloof and inattentive. REALLY? I have to flag someone down and ASK for another cocktail long after my initial cocktail has been finished? Ditto with water and coffee? Salt? Pepper? Anyone? A check in would be nice at some point during a meal, whether it is a weekday dinner or a cattle call brunch buffet. Back to the brunch buffet.... Note to management: poor form to have some inexperienced, immature and obnoxious teenager at the carving station. That guy did not understand the basics of rare, medium rare, medium, or well done to save his life and we finally gave up our attempt to get the beef to our liking. It was amusing, however, to watch him wave and point his carving knife at people in line like some Jack Sparrow pirate wannabe as he asked how they would like their beef. Needless to say, despite giving you every chance, we will not be back. read more
