Oh Cedars - how the mighty have fallen. I LOVE Indian food. I used to love Cedars - but now. The last 2 times I've been (not on a weekend) the food has been okay, and the service has been dreadful. The worst EVER! First time, our appetizer arrived after the meal - and the meal took 30 minutes. The order was wrong, and I had to practically hunt down our server. He promised to redo it and be back in 2 minutes. make it 10 - THEN HE DUMPED THE PLATE AND RAN OFF. The bus-person finally brought us a box and our check. We asked to speak to the manager, and he was very apologetic - all his fault, yada yada. He gave us a voucher good for two free entrees next time we came in. We didn't leave a tip. Fast forward a few weeks - again, we went on a weeknight, middle of the dinner hour. Got seated immediately - and that was the last quick thing that happened. It took 10 minutes to get a glass of water, and another 5 before the server showed up. We ordered - and asked for the appetizer first. The waiter asked me to spell the name of the beer I ordered so he could find it! Thank goodness he brought the beer fairly quickly, because it was 20 minutes before the appetizer showed up. Another 15 for the dinners (which did not arrive at the same time, so my friend was left eating naan.) So - an hour to get an okay dinner. The waiter just said they were having problems in the kitchen. I used to love Cedar's - but two horrendous serving and food experiences has left me let down. The night we went there were 2 parties of about 15-20 students each in our section, but we weren't crowded. However, it was a bit noisy. We tried the Cod Tandoori (delicious), the Royal Biryani lamb Curry (very good), the Mango lamb Curry (outstanding, a little sweet), the chicken Vindaloo (delicious) and the Garlic and the Plain Nan. The sauces were excellent, the service prompt and courteous, the whole experience was superb. Whole-heartedly recommended. read more

Why is this place the top rated Indian restaurant in Seattle. When you go through the door, there is a stench from the bathroom. That put me off big time, but I decided to try out the food. It was ok, it wasnt bad but definitely not great. I would know since I am Indian. If you want authentic indian food, try kabab house. Refused to serve us with our physical service Labrador. I called ahead and explained to a nice young lady that we were walking 7 blocks in the rain from our hotel, and asked if we had time to make it before they closed. I was told they were closing at 9:30, and she asked me to try to be there by 9:15. We arrived at 9:12. As the same nice young lady was seating us, three men came from the back. They pointed to our service animal (who was wearing his service dog vest) and spoke excitedly in their language. They gave the young lady a command, and she said, "I'm sorry - we are closed". One of the men offered to get us food to go, but refused to seat us. Food was still coming out of the kitchen, and was being delivered to tables. It was very obvious they did not want our service dog in their restaurant, and their refusal to continue seating us was thinly guised as a sudden decision to close. Our service Labrador is very clean, calm and well trained. If you are handicapped and in need of a service animal, I would not recommend this restaurant. The food smelled wonderful. We were very hungry after a long drive, and it was difficult to walk away without food. read more

Yum! I went to Cedars for the first time yesterday with one of my friends. I got the Curries Specialties with lamb and it was fantastic. Great flavor and good sized portions. We also split a naan bread and it was huuuuuge. More than enough to be split between two people. Anytime I want Indian food, I'll be heading back to Cedars! read more

I've been to this place twice now and the food was good each time, but both times I asked for them to make my food as spicy as possible (a 5 out of 5 on their scale), and each time they looked at me like I was crazy, but the food ended up not being even half as spicy as I wanted. The fresh naan was pretty top notch though, so props for that. read more

Maybe it was a bad night but my falafel was so hard I couldn't cut it with a nice. The pita bread was cold and dry. The service was slow and inconsistent and the wait staff forgot one of our orders and had to be reminded. We won't go there again as there are so many good restaurants in the neighborhood. read more

Best Indian Restaurant in Seattle. Their chai is amazing and bottomless. If only they filled it as quickly as they seem to refill the water, lol! My favorite is their paneer tikka masala with garlic naan. They have always been friendly to my children and made them feel welcome. My only complaint about this restaurant is that they hurry you on your way during the evening when they are packed. I try to only come in the afternoon now, so I can sip my chai and enjoy the food. Great service is not always consistent, but the food is, and that's the most important thing for me when it comes to restaurants that aren't fine dining. I love their nan bread. The best I've ever had. Very affordable too. Yum. I've been eating here for over a year. It's always very satisfying for what I usually order, all curry dishes. Food and service were both perfect! I am no easily impressed by a restaurant. My husband and I had basically eaten and met 2 friends and my son and daughter in law to be before we hit up a movie at the Sundance Theater. Because we weren't going to order, the waiter immediately brought us complimentary chai tea. It was delicious. The other 4 ordered food and I nipped off of their plates. I was amazed at how intense all of the food was. The Naan bread was huge and just made and perfect for slopping up everyone's left overs. I was so sorry that I didn't get a day to go back during my trip because I really wanted to eat a complete meal there. Highly recommend. read more

The food is very good at Cedars, especially the Mutter Paneer. I worked at Cedars for very brief time in 2007 and I am hear to tell you that waiters and busboys DO NOT GET TIPS! It is not a myth, they really don't tip you. The cooks are also very inappropriate with female workers, and it is a generally hostile work environment. But yes, the food is EXCELLENT. The food is decent. But it's true - staff do not receive tips. The "good" hourly wage does not make up for the loss of tips. There's a reason it's set up that way. Just keep this in mind when eating just decent Indian food in an area where there are plenty of Indian options. read more

Great place, usually packed, has both Mediterranean and Indian food but I usually go with the Indian side of the menu, whereas the wife goes with the Mediterranean side. Great Naan/Raita, I like the Tandoori Chicken Tikka, but everything I've had has been solid. Crowds can get big and I will often get it to go. Good value especially with appetizers etc. read more

Disappointed. I came here to get food quite often. I would always order the butter chicken marsala and the nan bread. I would also come here to get Kulfi Ice cream. However, the other day I came in and ordered to go for my family, all the portions were extra small....I paid the same price, but got a small togo Chinese box filled with rice...and worst of all..the curry came in the same size!!! How can this be? I paid a good $15 for each of my curry. Then when I got kulfi ice cream for my kids, an even bigger disappointment. The kulfi ice cream was placed into a -to go container, in a "to-go sauce container that was 1.5 inches tall and 2 inches wide (the ones similar at red robins for to-go sauces"" I paid $5 dollars for it! I wanted to call to complain, about how ripped off I felt and how deceiving it was to put kulfi ice cream in such a small to go container, inside a larger container. I did not realize until I got home. Worst of all, I had to give it to my 2 daughter who loves Kulfi ice cream and had to share it. Only to find that they could finish it in less then 5 spoon scoops together. Oh, the look in their eyes was painful...and the shock my wifes eyes when she realized what had happened. On top of that, I paid extra tip because this is my frequent go to indian restaurant! I do not believe this could have been a mistake, and feel cheated as a customer. I will not go to place ever again, since it is obvious they do not value their customers. If you better Indian food + better service, I suggest you go to Taste of India in Roosevelt. Food is exquisite, servers are friendly, and they do not try to deceive their customers (even when it is to-go). I am not a foodie. I'm just a lady. A lady who really loves Mangoes--always have, always will. I also really love spicy food. I haven't always, but I will continue to push myself to grow in this arena so long as my innards allow for it. I also really love Cedars. Why? Because of the Mango Curry, the bottomless Chai (they have magical cups!), and the surprises. I love surprises! The service is wonderful, too!! You: Wait...surprises? Me: Keep reading. 1-5 Heat Scale: The only con (if you could call it that) is that whenever I'm feeling wild enough to order my food a strong 4, it tastes like a weak 3. This makes me feel brave and strong--like a warrior, because I convince myself my tolerance has increased and I'm ready for a 5. However, when I return (2-5 days later) to order another round of Mango Curry intent on handling that 4 so well that I ask for more spices (which you can do), I start sweating within minutes. While the sweat makes me feel fit, like I've been working out, it also makes me question my ability to handle the heat...which then leads me to return 2-5 days later to start the tolerance-testing all over again. It's an delicious cycle that I'm happy to be caught up in. On the other hand, if you're not into spicy foods and you already worked out that month, you might want to just stick with the 2s. I was rather disappointed with this place, which came highly recommended from a friend. First of all, when I arrived with a group of friends, we were confused about their parking situation, so we ran in to ask which area, exactly, was their parking lot (since the parking lot adjacent belongs to the pharmacy and warns you not to park there). The host said "there's a sign, it says right there." Yes, thank you, I saw the sign. I don't want to get towed for parking in the wrong lot. It was all down hill from there. The food is decent but nothing amazing. Prices are a bit high. Service was terrible. My friend ordered a beer, which was never brought. When he asked about it, our server told him to get up and "choose one" from the fridge behind the cashier. There are way better Indian restaurants in Seattle both in terms of food and service (and price!) - I wouldn't go back. read more

This place hired my cousin years ago as a dishwasher and refused to pay him. They kept pretending they were going to pay him and strung him along. My cousin worked hard and put up with no pay for longer than he should have. He finally walked out, never having received a dime from them. My cousin is now a very successful manager who PAYS his people! No Cedars, we have not forgotten about you taking advantage of a hardworking teenage boy. You will NEVER have our business. read more

I ordered a lunch from this restaurant. It was delivered by Peach who delivers lunches in the downtown Seattle area. I'm on a calorie/fat restricted diet so I don't eat out much. The lunch was labeled "lite" and it was described as tandoori chicken over mixed vegetables. I thought that sounded like something I could eat so I ordered it. The portion was good - 3 pieces of chicken over lots of vegetables. However, the vegetables were so greasy, the outside of the box was saturated with grease. The vegetables were swimming in grease. I took photos and sent them to Peach with a complaint. I had paid $12 for the lunch and I had to throw most of it away. Peach responded quickly and told me they would advise the restaurant of my complaint and give me a 20% discount on a future order. Maybe these people (Cedars) don't know the meaning of "lite", but if they're going to advertise their food as such, they should probably figure it out. I've never been to the restaurant itself, but I have no desire to go after eating one of their lunches. read more

I would give this place ZERO stars if it was an option. Unfortunately, it's not. What is unfortunate is the way they treat their customers and how they prepare their food. Tonight I went with a couple of my friends and ordered a mango lasse, naan, and entrees. On THREE separate occasions throughout the course of our meal we found hair in our food. The first one showed up in my mango lasse and had to be sent back and replaced. The second time a hair showed up in my friend's naan. The third hair was in my other friend's vindaloo. We notified the staff and talked to the manager. We were still charged for all our food and they refused to acknowledge any of our claims. They were extremely rude, unprofessional, and ungrateful. It was one of the worst experiences I've ever had at a restaurant and I refuse to ever go back. I'm not just out $40 dollars, I'm out $40 dollars for a meal I didn't even eat. I have been going here for the last four years, mainly for the lamb butter masala (Yummy!), the mango curry, and the naan (authentic or not, it is delicious). The food has always been fantastic but thank god (or somebody) for the new manager. My boyfriend and I almost stopped going to Cedar's because of the horrible wait times and the huge bottleneck of service through the manager who was trying to do everything and obviously did not know how to delegate. We could have handled the wait times, had the manager not kept lying to us always saying "you are next" and then taking another party first so that our approximated wait time was always double what he said it would be. So we were pleasantly surprised when we decided to give Cedar's another chance and we learned there was a new manager who had obviously streamlined everything and added more tables in addition to other updates on the place including the bathroom and the decorating. Now I have almost no complaints about Cedars. However, I would give Cedar's one more star if they would stop using styrofoam take out boxes. I would also love to see them start delivering and/or have a lunch buffet. If they did one of the last two things, they would get even more of my business as long as it didn't take away from the quality of the food. I do miss the mysterious free baklava however-- will we get it this time or not? You just never knew. My boyfriend and I thought we had cracked the formula for getting free baklava but now I guess we will never know. I had happily eaten at Cedars for almost 20 years, but no more. Two reasons, and one is just what I've heard from several people in the food industry, is that the family that runs the restaurant takes an unfair share tips from the staff. But that was what pushed me to decide not to go back, after my last experience. The food there has always been amazing, the service has always been uncomfortable and weird. But the food! The Best Indian food I've ever eaten. However, the tiny, crowded table that they fill with your mattress sized naan, jars of sauces (whose potential - and likely- uncleanliness makes me shudder), and entree with, which are always served within 2 minutes of each other, make it an awkward experience. The servers are a little pushy, and they hover, but all of this I put up with! Until this last experience. As we were starting our appetizers, just before the entrees arrived and teetered on the edge of the table, a cockroach climbed onto our water glass. A cockroach. I calmly told the server & we handed the glass over. No apology. No acknowledgment of it, no discount on the meal. They did bring us a free tiramisu, however, that has happened every time I've eaten there. It was hard to enjoy the rest of the dinner, and during that time and into the night, taking all things into consideration, I lost my appetite for Cedars. read more
