Did I come on an off night? My husband ordered the lemongrass beef and I ordered the brisket pho. It took 20 minutes for my husband's lemongrass beef to come out and it was cold. Then, 5 minutes later my pho arrived. I've never waited 25 minutes for pho ever in my life. The noodles were also thick which might be great for some but I prefer the thin rice vermicelli. Some of the brisket was tough and hard to chew. There was also part of an onion skin in my soup. I don't think I'll be trying this joint again. read more

Yes, I do realize food costs have risen. I ordered Stir Fried Noodles with Shrimp and extra vegetables. Website states $2.50 for extra veggies. I laughed to myself because it came in the exact same size box as a regular order and still ZERO oyster mushrooms in the entire order. Not an Im sorry were out of oyster mushrooms. Looked at the bill. They charged $2.00 for extra veggies. Ok. Plus I gave 15% tip for take away. $26.00+ for the bill. I was ecstatic when I heard about a Vietnamese restaurant that prepares its food with halal meat. I'd basically consigned myself to eating veggie pho for the rest of my life which is just not the same! I'm happy to report that Salima Specialties does the dishes justice by cooking them authentically and with fresh ingredients. The standout is the Pho. I got the combo: meatball, brisket, and oxtail. All at one incredible price. Eat this over the course of several days by yourself or share with the entire family while you're at the store. The rich, umami broth will not disappoint! I liked the combo plates too. The fried egg on top of the sticky rice was a nice touch. Mixing the meat, rice, and the pickled veggies on the side was the perfect combo of rich flavors and acidic undercurrent for a refreshing and hearty experience. I didn't love the mountain of fried onions on top, especially since they'd gone soft and were no longer crunchy, but the meat was grilled properly. The Bahn Mi was a bit dry at first, but once you get further into the sandwich you get more of the mayo and it's alright. Definitely not the best Bahn mi in Seattle, but if you eat only halal and this is your only option, it certainly doesn't feel like you're settling. Still a solid bahn mi experience! Service was a tad slow but we came at a busy time. When the food arrived though, it was hot and fresh so we weren't complaining. Located in the Skyway neighborhood near Grocery Outlet, it's a small shop that has a few tables inside for dining in. However, I noticed that most of the customers were getting takeout. When I asked the employee for her recommendations, she mentioned that the brisket pho was their best seller. Well, it was a typical, rainy day when I visited, so I figured I couldn't go wrong with pho. I ordered that with a Vietnamese iced coffee. You order at the counter and pick a seat where the employees bring your items to you once it's ready. My coffee came out first and it was sooo good! I love Vietnamese coffee and this one was made with Phin coffee, so you know that shit is legit. I loved how bold the coffee was, which is how all coffee should be. Then the brisket pho came out in a heavy, stone pot and there was a ton of brisket and meatballs, with all the standard toppings on the side. The brisket was tender and flavorful and the meatballs were solid. I loved the broth, which I didn't realize I needed on a cold day until I started slurping. I can see why this pho is their best seller. The only minor issue is that a lot of the noodles clumped together, but not a big deal. I would love to come back and explore more of the menu especially because it offers such a variety. This place was recommended by a friend and it was the best recommendations we've been to! This hidden gem is located around Skyway area right by Grocery Outlet. As we went inside, we were greeted by the friendly staff at the counter. Since this was our first time, we didn't know what to order but what stood out most was their pan-Asian street foods. The menu had lots of pictures that looked so appetizing. Here's what we got with pics: Drinks: Mango lassi- the drink was good but fruit wasn't ripen enough so it wasn't sweet enough. Thai green tea- this was by far the best drink I've had. The flavor were very fragrant with some hints of floral. I will definitely order this again. Blue butterfly drink- this was a very unique drink that had pea flowers, basil seeds, agar jelly and some nuts. While the drink was pretty to drink, I thought it was just okay. If you like something new and adventurous, this will be it! Foods shared amongst four people: Cham Bao- the bao had a delicious filling of shrimp, veggies and quail egg. Who would've thought having a quail egg inside a bun would taste so good! Definitely a must try! Samosas- Now I've had samosas from Indian restaurants before but this place is no different except the yummy chutney sauce. This was a bit pricey for two pieces but they were huge to split. Chicken satay skewers: This was by far one of our favorites to eat. Chicken were tendered and seasoned with lemongrass, turmeric and drizzled with some special peanut sauce. It goes so well with the side dipping sauces. We liked the peanut and fish sauce. Lemongrass beef: honestly, this was our least favorite dish. The beef were a bit dry. It seasoned well with lemongrass but just wasn't what we expected. Chicken wrap: I saw this on the pictures and knew I had to order this. It has a large piece of chicken with some pickled veggies wrapped with a warm piece of roti. I could technically eat this whole thing as meal. This was one of my favorites to try! Roti canai: really love their flaky roti and have it dipped into their lamb curry. This dish was solid and is halal friendly. Will have to order this again! Chicken wings: the chicken wings were standard but goes really well with their homemade sauces. It came with a signature dipping sauce which we loved. Desserts: Black rice pudding: this was by far our favorite! It has a strong aroma of coconut, filled with pandan, taro and glutinous rice. Really reminds you of the Vietnamese che dessert. Both dishes were good but hands down our favorite item was the chicken wrap. Its veggies, marinated meat and unique wrap were most impressive! I'd like to give 3.5-4 stars for now as I only tried couple items. The Roti with the curry lamb is definitely on point. The leave wraps around the roti brings some aroma and roti itself is tasty. We know is inflation. The curry has only 2 cubes of lamb and 5 cubes of potatoes. It doesn't look like much outside, but once you enter, you'll be blown away by the menu options and the colourful inside. It's like a cross of Vietnamese, Malaysian, Indian and Thai hence there are so many options. Every item that we ordered was delicious. Don't forget to grab some sauces and a drink or two! A coworker at work ranted and raved about a new halal place I should visit and how one of his family members runs the joint. I ordered the brisket pho, bao (beef) and a mango lassi. The shop is in a sketchy part of town, so def come here when the sun is up. I had a choice of parking by the dumpster and an old Firebird that someone was probably living out of. Inside the shop is small. You order at the counter and proceed to sit in a tiny area that gets crowded. My blended mango lassi came out first. Kinda bland, not too sweet. Wasn't a real mango lassi, none of the fat yogurt mouth feel. I then watched three take out orders go and half a table of 6 men get served. Pho was decent. The meatballs had a strange fish like after taste. I couldn't put my finger on it but they weren't plain old beef. The chunk of meat I got almost had a slight curry taste to it- odd, is this reallly pho? After I got my pho I watched the rest of the above mentioned table get more orders in...and I'm waiting for my bao. I finish my pho and had to ask the girl who took my order where my bao was. Maybe it was a sign from above that I didn't need the bao- and I should have let it go. Not impressed. Dry and crumbly inside. Interesting blend of veggies mixed inside like bamboo. Unfortunately I won't be returning. Service was bad and you have to bus your own table- I can handle one or the other. At least they don't ask for tips, deservedly so. The pictures showed what ordered and my thoughts about them, except the black rice pudding which is so tasty and rich. Overall I'm happy with the foods and will come back to try other dishes. However service needs to be improved, which is why I deducted 1 point. We had to ask for water which i think was quite ridiculous. The outer wrap is a fresh leaf (perhaps a banana leaf?) and underneath is a luscious chicken sandwich with pickled shredded veggies plus bits of deep fried onion wrapped with a fried flatbread. Great food! This was our first time having halal Vietnamese food in Seattle while on vacation. We had a diverse group of people of different ages that we had ordered to-go food for. I am happy to report that all of us loved all of the food that we ordered! I've heard about Salima Specialties from lots of people, my partner, my students, etc. so when I decided to pop in despite NOT being hungry, I was excited. It wasn't bad, I really want to preface this review with that. I just think I got the wrong stuff. I ordered the cham bao and it just wasn't my jam, there was peas, carrots, quail egg, ground meat, etc. the flavors didn't meld well for my palette but I could see why others would like it. I also ordered the taro fries, I thought it would be savory not sweet (again, I didn't order the right thing) and while they were good, they were sweet and the honey it came with was extra sweet. My friend got the skewered chicken plate and it looked good. My partner recommend the pork plate and from photos that looked good too. So again, I came in not hungry and ordered the wrong thing. Considering most of the space is hidden for the kitchen, very intimate place, but gives the same vibe as an open coffee shop. Minus the coffee station. I love halal food, and it just fills me up in a different way. While I did not get any food related items, I do recommend stopping by to try it. Halal food is prepared a particular way that you don't notice at first bite, but makes a difference throughout the course of the meal. I did get the mango lassi. I was asking the person behind the counter which drink was best and she was able to help me go with the mango lassi. Honestly, you can't go wrong with any of the drinks she said. I was not having a sweet tooth, and the mango is a nice refreshing drink. It had mango chunks which was a nice texture to the drink. It's a small family owned business as my friend shared with me. I love local. I love supporting my fellow south seattle folks. I appreciate the spot as I don't see too many halal places (or maybe I'm just not looking). Go here. There is food. Get some and eat it. A cornicopia of items to try (and re-try) for a either a simple meal, quick snack, or mere indulgence. Cham Bao (steamed bun) is beyond reproach. As is the "Signature" Chili Sauce and Green Chutney. There is a couple of untried items which look well made (anyone say Halal Chix Satay? Oxtail? Lumpia?) There is some criticism of this new establishment, and I would expect the chef to dial-in (or omit) as more services are completed. -Bahn Mi means BREAD, specifically amazing French Baguttes. If the loaves are not that (which they were so not) then don't bother even considering what you put between the slices. There is some amazing actual Bahn Mi sandwiches in Renton. Eat a few of those, then rethink this offering. This Fish Cake was no-no-no and make sure the vegetables with anything you select sing much louder. -Samosa is also so famously done, that to throw one together with the ho-hum filling (frozen veg), invites a demise. -Shrimp Fritters has good breading and halal shrimp (both culinary goodnesses individually) but the Curry Leaf sorely under-represented. Think Onion, Think Bean Sprouts, Think Garlic - Think Mindanao Barrios, not Skyway Grocery Outlet parking lot. -Beef Skewers I would get solely for the delicious Jimica, Carrot, Cham Pickle Slaw that it is served upon. The benefit of a ground beef skewer is that you CAN infuse it with amazing ingredients to transform it to another plane of texture and flavor existance.
