This was the first time we came to this restaurant. We were there for my cousin's 50th Wedding Anniversary. Upon entering this lovely place, we felt very comfortable and cozy. All the waiters and assistant waiters came up to us and very happily asked if they can help us. We were waiting for the rest of the party, but they let us sit at the ready table until the rest arrived. Everyone was very nice and attentive and professional. They each came regularly to ask if we needed anything. Our amazing waiter was Oscar. He was incredible. He had memorized the entire list of the specials. After he was done, I could only remember one or two items. The appetizers were wonderful and the dinner was excellent. I had the pumpkin tortellini dish and was very very good, so creamy and satisfying. Everyone loved their dishes as well. Me and my friend showed up here lookin for a nice Italian dinner, and I ordered a custom risotto with wine sauce and seafood and it didn't disappoint. My homie got a carbonara. After reading the Yelp reviews (how many reviews start like that?), I was a little concerned at my brothers recommendation. I trust my bro so to Celestino we went. This is OLD SCHOOL Italian and I LOVED it! The menu is very large and they have many specials. There is truly something for everyone. The pasta was incredible. Fresh, melt in your mouth, pasta your nona would make! I had a special salad with arugula, buffalo mozzarella and prosciutto. It was light but filling and I could eat it every day! Our party had a mixture of seafood and pasta and everyone was truly happy. This is not The Olive Garden. If you're looking for that experience, look elsewhere. Yes it is Old school Northern Italian and some of the dishes are there simply because people expect them to be there , but we had a terrific dinner. Swordfish carpacio, mussels and clams in a terrific broth, fresh paperedele with pheasant and models ( the pasta was great- the sauce was less successful) , pork tenderloin in rosemary sauce, Osso buco were very enjoyable. As in the case of most Italian restaurants dessert was not memorable but was adequate. A bit pricey but not crazy prices. They were packed with pre Christmas celebrations and even though we were there early we were given a less than nice table which was the only downside to the service. read more

Wonderful birthday dinner for two on May 4, 2021. We were given a choice and elected to sit on the Celestino back garden patio. As a first course, we selected the Spaghetti Carbonara, which was made in the perfect Roman style. Our "secondi" was the Veal Osso Bucco, served over Saffron risotto, which was meltingly tender and came with an unctuous tomato sauce. We appreciated their willingness to split each entree Into two plates, each a lovely presentation. As the portions were generous, and the Cabonara deliciously filling, we each took home quite a bit of the Osso Bucco. To top this dinner off they allowed me to order any dessert I wanted from the menu and it was a gift from them. Plus it came with a lit candle, LOL. The price for the two very special entrées was very reasonable - around $55. All in all a perfect evening. Celestino started with great service from the waiter, however I asked the busser for no ice in the water and instead gave me extra and kept pouring it until finally I said explicitly no ice. He then promptly changed it so that was okay. The food portion is tiny for what you pay for. For example, the chicken Milanese which I ordered only came with a side of arugula. my friend got the pasta and when the same busser came to pick it up we asked for a box, which he never brought! By the time the check came still no box of food and then the waiter had to explain that the busser didn't understood and could make us another side. However, it was over at this point and had to go back to work. Cold unapologetic service, rock hard bread, and our waiter couldn't be bothered to tell us the specials cause he didn't know what was still available. We made 8PM reservations for a Saturday dinner over one and a half months in advance to celebrate Valentine's Day. Instead of a warm romantic evening, we were seated in the back of the restaurant by the loud kitchen and next to an ever opening back door that blew a chilly gust of wind every 30sec. When we explained the situation to the hostess and the manager, we were told that they're very busy and "everyone has reservations" but they'll see what they can do. 30min later, they moved us to another table, but honestly the horrible atmosphere had tainted this evening like the rock hard bread seemed to forecast the rest of the lackluster evening. Food wise, we were told they had run out of many of specials even though it was only 8PM. So instead, we had the rabbit dish and pheasant pasta. Both had good flavor but not extraordinary. The pheasant in the pasta was so small that you had to search to know it was there and the sauce had congealed when it got to us. This restaurant seems to be one that may have been once great but forgotten that they must grow and improve with the times. They can't just rest on their laurels and focus only in their established clients and alienate new ones. With all the dining options available in the area, why would anyone choose one that shows complete disregard for customer experience? (...and really, the rock hard bread alone is a crime for any restaurant, much less a decent Italian restaurant.) read more

This restaurant doesn't even deserve ONE star. We were very disappointed with the food and service last evening at Celestino restaurant. Either they over booked the tables or they don't have enough servers. The waiter only took our orders and disappeared for the entire evening serving other tables. They placed us at the entrance way and every time someone opened the door, chilled gusting wind blew through. We order the mushroom soup and it came in just warm. The halibut was over cooked after I had remain the waiter medium only. The customers were gathered around our table waiting to be led to their table. People were crowing around us for the entire duration of my dinner. Some coughing and some talking loud. Their services does not even worth for ONE little star. Have been a semi regular customer here for since 2008. Went recently. They were busy but a sloppiness has come into the restaurant. We ordered all things same time. App arrived fine. They took gf's silverware w App. Entrees arrived a bit later. My GF's was not accurate , mine was. I completed my meal. They brought her another entre. Wrong again. Her other one showed up 3 -4 minutes after second wrong. Noticing her silverware was missing they grabbed from a table that had been sat at w other couple who decided patio dining didn't work but had touch silverware. So a number of things wrong. All of this reflects newer, less trained, or stretched staff. Basic processes are breaking down. Ironically, the owner was entertaining someone in the corner booth near us. They were busy but breakdowns like this are how a good business goes out of business. Saw servers wandering taking food to other tables and asking when they arrived at tables. Servers used to account good to make sure it was right. Gf was not happy and felt food wasn't as good on top of it. Sadly, it's hard to get a loyal following but easy to lose your loyal fans when screw up's like this occur. Will be a while before we go back to drop $150 on a disaster like that, if ever. They were busy so losing 2 loyals won't hurt them. But if I see & feel it, others may too. Worse yet, I hate torch you given I have been coming for 14+ years. We were invited here for dinner by some friends who wanted to share some joy of the Christmas season. They are longtime LA residents, lovers of good food and we welcomed what we were certain would be a fine dining experience. Naturally, like a good Yelper, I checked the reviews and was a bit surprised to find the recent reviews were a very mixed bag, from 5 stars all the way down to 1. Most of the problems found by my Yelp colleagues seemed to be with the service, versus the cuisine. Our hosts were seated when we arrived after valeting the car right out front for $5.00. Our table was front and center in the cozy front dining room, well decorated for the holidays. We exchanged pleasantries...and then we waited...and waited and waited. No water...no looks...no greetings. We couldn't believe it. This went on for a seeming eternity. Then a basket of bread...and another long wait. Finally a waiter came and took our water and drink order then dashed away even though our hosts proclaimed, "I THINK WE'RE READY TO ORDER!" A little while later, we ordered...then there was another extended wait for our food. In the end, the previous reviews were spot on...the food... OUTSTANDING! I had the T-bone steak Florentine style, and my companions had a variety of pasta and seafood dishes. Everything was delicious and properly prepared. BUT...the service continued to be disjointed and irregular...very much spurts and fits...vs. the smooth presentation that would have made this a home run. It felt like there was a shortage of staff, and that they were doing their best to help each other. I was told that this was the original restaurant of the DRAGO group, which has several successful Italian eateries in the LA area. Maybe they need to revisit their roots and streamline things a bit. We had an appallingly bad meal tonight. The food quality has collapsed. The kitchen has lost its culinary skills. Instead of french bread we were served supermarket rolls - the kind that come all stuck together in a cellophane package. The asparagus soup was simply pureed asparagus with no detectable seasoning. The pastas had no prepared base. We had a 3-digit bill for flavorless food. We have been to this restaurant at least half a dozen times before and always had superb meals. This was a completely different experience. We were cheated. Do not go to this restaurant until you evidence that their kitchen is being managed by a competent chef. read more

WHAT THE HELL HAPPENED HERE?????? New Ownership? Change in the wait staff? Different chef? New Manager? Our dear friends joined us at dinner last evening, Saturday April 22nd, and unlike the wonderful food and ambience experienced during all of our previous visits over many years this turned out to be just a shade above a complete disaster. It literally it took over 20 minutes just to get a glass of water let alone a glass of Chianti. The place seemed completely understaffed with what appeared to be a completely new wait staff. I mean we didn't recognize a single face. Prior to last night the place was our ultimate Osso Buco happy place. Finally, about 45 minutes later, what was once a fabulous, hand crafted sauce tasted like it came out of a Chef Boyardee can days earlier. I mean even the killer Panna cotta tasted like a failed attempt at some diner . The frosting on the proverbial cake came when a slovenly dressed man, representing himself to be the manager (possibly owner not sure which), visited us at the table. My lovely wife, without affect, discussed what a disappointment the evening had been, the poor service and the far less than average food . Rather than taking a sympathetic and understanding posture, most appropriate for the circumstance, he went on to defend what occurred by telling us that this is the way they had done business for the last 24 years, the same food and the same wait staff. The only redeeming thing about the entire evening was the company of our wonderful and most gracious friends who seemed to take the poor service and bad food, by far the worst I've experienced in a long time, all in stride. I was there a couple of weeks ago with a friend. We split the bill and each paid with a credit card. My friend's card was correctly charged for 1/2; but my card was charged for the full amount instead of half. I pointed this out to our waiter and he came back with the correct charge, assuring me that the incorrect charge had been deleted. Well, it wasn't -- both charges went through to the credit card company. I called a couple days after our visit and it took me a few calls to reach the manager, Mario, to straighten this out. My problem here is not so much the mis-charge (altho I have heard this type of "mis-charge" is happening more with split bills and they think the customer is not paying attention). My main problem is with Mario's attitude. He started out by giving me a hard time, insisting they did not make an error -- and if they did, it would not have gone thru as a permanent charge to my card. But I had the physical receipts, so he finally had to relent. This was after he supposedly checked with the waiter, who denied remembering the incident And, most egregious -- Mario NEVER apologized -- instead choosing to almost deflect blame on me. I had a date night and the service was amazing. The staff was very attentive to our every need. When we first arrived they sat us outside in their cute courtyard area. We had a bottle of champagne and it was great. The ravioli stuffed with spinach was delicious. After a while, my date and I decided we wanted to move inside and they were very accommodating. The staff kept checking on us to see if we needed anything. Everybody was very nice and helpful. All the tables were cleaned around us and everybody was wearing their mask. We stayed a little bit after the restaurant was closing and they were not rushing us out of there. I will definitely be back here for more delicious food and for the great customer service. I haven't been to Celestino for many years. I'm not sure why except my life got very busy and I found myself going to other restaurants in Pasadena. But I went there recently with a friend, and was glad I did. It's still the quality restaurant it has always been: good food, good service. That said: I want to let the cook know that the Swordfish steaks that my companion and I ordered were both overcooked. They really should be a bit pink inside. As a result they were quite dry. As a result, I'm giving only 4 stars not 5. But I do feel a bit guilty as the overall experience was a good one. Next time I order Swordfish I'll ask for it slightly pink inside. read more

Celestino is a fallen star. )-; We paid over $85 for dinner for 2 this week including tip, and were served cold, tasteless pasta, fishy sea bass sitting on a purple mystery mush, and a glass of wine with unsettling sediment stuck to the inside of my glass!! Our experience this weekend convinced us that Celestino no longer has the same kitchen staff which impressed us on our first visit over a year ago. We both ordered the Timballo di Pasta for $14.50 per person. It is supposed to be a gourmet pasta with vegetables in an artichoke sauce. We were each given a serving of pasta which was warm on the outside, but cold in the middle! We sent them back, and the second time they were warm all the way through. However, the pasta wasn't tasty at all, and had very little sauce. We were extremely disappointed, as the artichoke sauce on this pasta entree had been exquisitely tasty when we had first tried it over a year ago. WHERE did the chef go who knows how to make this dish?! The pasta we were served at Celestino this weekend was LESS tasty than some pastas I've had in frozen dinners. )-: We hoped our next course would improve. We chose to share the sea bass, which was a fish of the day. The waiter said it would come over spinach, and he recommended it. However, it didn't come over spinach. It came on top of a purple mystery mush which we couldn't even identify. They charged us $30 for this entree (which we split.) The sea bass had poor texture and poor flavor. It tasted like frozen fish which had been defrosted for a few days and then over-cooked. None of our dishes were worthy of being served at Celestino! I also had a glass of red wine, and as I finished the wine, I found unsettling amounts of sediment clinging to my glass. The waiter did offer me a complimentary second glass of wine to try to make up for this situation. Another odd thing is that our menus were old and appeared to be water-stained, and needed replacing. This isn't a good sign in a restaurant that is charging gourmet prices. Something has changed drastically at Celestino. If you click on my name on Yelp, you will note that I don't usually write 1-star reviews. This dinner has the distinction of being the worst dinner I've had this year. read more

I was this close to driving all the way to LA with bestie Michelle K. to get some Basa Nova because we both wanted pasta that night. After much debate and what seemed to be endless driving around Pasadena, we made it to Celestino. I have to admit, I felt a little bit out of place. I mean with jeans and t-shirt you feel a bit under dress for the occasion. This place would be a great place to take a date or have your parents come and enjoy a romantic dinner together. I will commend them for their service. The waiters were magnifico! They all spoke Italian first of all, so I knew right then the place was as authentic as it was going to get. The waiter was nice enough to suggest my meal but put a bit of a twist to it. I was a little hesitant to let him do it but I figured why not? Boy was I glad I said yes because my meal was amazing! My pasta was made from scratch, the tomato sauce had a tangy spicy kick to it, and the Italian sausage was meaty and juicy. My meal had a very clean taste to it and was perfectly portioned. The dessert had to be the best part, considering we devoured it in minutes. The pana cotta is the lightest, slightyly sweetened custard I've ever tasted! I would go back just to order this and a bottle of wine. That's all I need from this place! I'm more than a fan, I'm a FANATIC! read more

This place was just "eh" for me. My husband and I took my ex-husband's mother here for her birthday (yes, you read that correctly), and I was disappointed. Of course, my mother-in-law ((I suppose technically EX-) would never say anything bad even if she thought it, but I can........and I will. First of all, the place was dreadfully loud. The acoustics really didn't exist, and I couldn't really hear my husband or mother-in-law. I couldn't even hear myself talk.....or think. Then, there's the food quality. I was very unimpressed with the new age cuisine portions. Who serves a piece of lasagna literally paper thin? That's not lasagna. It truly was paper thin. Even though my husband ordered it, I tried it (shouldn't have though......5 bites into it, it's gone). That's not lasagna, and that's not how Italians intend to have their lasagna eaten. Why do people have to change what never stopped working? Call me a pig, call me rigid, call me whatever you want, but don't tell me I'm wrong about this. My mother-in-law loves loves loves duck, so she got the Half-moon ravioli stuffed with duck, mushrooms, mascarpone and blueberry sauce. She got 4 medium-sized ravioli with some token sauce, and somewhere in all that was some duck. I don't eat duck, I don't eat ravioli, and I certainly didn't want to take from her very small portion just to say I tried it. As for me, as vividly as I recall what my hubby and mother-in-law ordered, I haven't a clue whatsoever what I got. Since we actuallyI went a few months ago (and I forgot to write about it back then), I don't even remember what I ordered, but that should tell you how uninspiring and unmemorable it was. I remember everything I love...or even like......with clarity, so if I don't remember anything about my entree, it was bland and boring, I'm sure. Anyway, others love this place. I don't. When we came in at 7 pm, they had lost our reservation. But, we were seated anyway because they were so empty, which became clear why in just a bit. We noticed it was DineLA, so we asked for the special menu, which came with an odd reply of "only for lunch or dinner." Confused, we said it's 7, so it is dinner time...which then he just walked away. Then, another server came by and we asked again, so we got the menu finally, and noticed it costs the same, if not more, than the regular menu. So, we ended up ordering from the regular menu. Turns out they actually forgot about us. When our friend finally made it, the server took 20+ minutes to take out orders. There wasn't even a bread bowl to munch on until we asked for it. It also took awhile to get our food, which was good but nothing memorable. I wasn't too hungry and ordered just an entree of duck, wild mushroom ravioli. The mushrooms were average in flavor. I think they could have used some more thyme or rosemary, something to give them oomph. The sauce was an interesting blueberry cream that did add some depth to the dish. Maybe this would have been more interesting with wild mushrooms and wild blueberries. Just saying. My friends got the shrimp paperadelli and angel hair pasta with tomatoes and basil. For protein, she added chicken to the angel hair pasta and they charged us $6 for it. Again, taste was just okay. Service was slow till the end. It took them awhile to get around to our tab. If I could give zero stars and still be able to post a review I would. This places does not even deserve 1 star. Waiter was rude and never checked up on us throughout the whole meal. The bread that was served was rock hard. I ordered their roasted peppers with eggplant & goat cheese salad and it was the smallest salad I had ever had. I could finish that thing in 3 bites. The baby mixed green were all dry and wilted. Not fresh. The roasted peppers and eggplant had no flavor at all. Worst salad I had ever had in my life. Fast forward 20 minutes. Plates were cleared off our tables and it was blatantly obvious we were done with our meal. Our waiter did not even approach us with our bill or offer us a dessert menu. We asked for our check 2 times -- still no check. Then we asked someone who looked like he was in-charge there -- owner? manager? and before I was finish asking (very nicely) he actually cut me off and yelled -- "CHECK! OKAY!" The pumpkin with cream inside the pasta shell is the finishing and final touch of why Celestino Ristorante & Bar will be immortalized in Pasadena's landscape forever. Nonna leaves these kinds of dishes to Executive Chef Calogero Drago and the rest of his team. They know what paradise tastes like. Even the Italian fried rice ball, the arancini, is worthy for the Pope to eat. Italian restaurants are a dime a dozen in this town. Sicilian restaurants are much rarer. When you find one and it's not just good, but legendary, it's a keeper. You wish to spend time with the full menu parade and let it serenade you into ecstasy. You want to chat with the merry chef and his front of the house team that takes full ownership in the restaurant as if it were their own. Every dish's orchestra of flavors derive from the island's rich Arabic, Spanish, Greek, and French influences. The spaghetti con sarde, a spaghetti dish with fresh sardines, salted anchovy fillets, and wild fennel is pureed into a sauce that comes from Sicily's North African heritage. Calogero Drago is one half of the Drago dynasty here in Los Angeles. He is a man that embraces his namesake. Calogero originates from the Latin name Calogerus which means "beautiful elder" and Drago means not only dragon but also a man who is capable of anything. He carries these definitions in spades. And knows which pasta noodle specifically goes with which protein. Take for instance the pappardelle with pheasant and morel mushrooms. The wide fettuccine noodles go with the fowl like peanut butter goes with jelly. Their menu is organized into courses like an emperor's feast. The order goes soup, salad, antipasto, pasta, fish and meat which can be separated into first course and second courses. Very weird experience! Family wanted to have a New Years meal and ordered online. Well, the online site took full order and went to restaurant to pick up order. Restaurant closed and a worker was still there. Luckily, after several emails, no response from owners whatsoever by the way, phone calls repeatedly.......a final response and refund for the order. Weird experience! Restaurant does not respond to your email or inquires on website or even when you DM through Instagram, completely ignored. Will not ever go back to this restaurant. read more

These are the following dishes I tried: Mezzelune d'Anatra con Salsa di Funghi, Mascarpone e Mirtilli ($16.50): Half-moon Ravioli filled with Duck, Mushroom, Mascarpone and Procini Blueberry Sauce Duck Carpaccio di Bue con Parmigiani e Capperi ($14.50): Beef Carpaccio with Capers and Parmesan Cheese. Comes with lemon on the side that you can squeeze onto the carpaccio. Enjoyed every bite Timballo di Funghi con Fonduta e Tartufo Nero ($16.50) : Mushrooms Souffle with Fontana Cheese Sauce and Black Truffles. Full of flavor. Very delicious! Totally recommend!
