Visited July 17, 2026. After our Japanese Garden trip, my daughter and I stopped here for dinner. I feel horrible, because I chose this place and it turned out poorly. Initially I was going to give one star, or infinite negative stars if Yelp allowed, for my server's shady service. After speaking with the manager, Roxanne, on the phone, I decided to rate them 3 stars based on the food only, and just write about the experience. Upon entering, I asked the host if we could sit at one of two empty booths. She stated that they were only for parties of five, then walked us to a hidden inside room by the restroom. The vibe just felt off, but I did not let my daughter know what my gut was telling me. The room had only two parties in it. We sat a while before our server came. I will call him E. for now, as Roxanne will speak with him. He asked, "Are you good with water for now?" He did not ask if we were ready, if we wanted drinks, or if it was our first time. A couple came in after us. He was attentive with them, and they got bread ahead of us. Every table had bread except for ours. Then I saw E. filling water at every table except ours, and my daughter's cup was half full. My daughter sarcastically said, "Is it because we look poor?" I know there is always some truth to every joke. I said, "I guess." Then she continued, "Uhm, at least you had a nice blouse on, and jeans. I am wearing a tank top." I laughed, but quietly I was very upset. I held my composure because I did not want to ruin her dinner. But she should not have felt that way. That was not okay at all. I checked their dress policy beforehand. It is casual. My daughter wore a pinstripe button-down over a tank top, charcoal shorts, and tennis shoes. The females there were in dresses and the males in slacks. We sure dressed for the occasion, just not what E. was expecting. We sat alone a long while. No bread, no utensils, just water. E. finally came. Before we said anything: "We will bring out some plates for you to share? You'll be sharing, right?" Unprompted, he mentioned the Wagyu. "That would be good to order for you to share. There are plenty of meat in one plate." I had actually planned to order the Wagyu, but after that comment I chose the lamb. I ordered the clams for appetizer ($22), and the lamb chop ($56). My daughter ordered the sea bass (Corvina, $46). E. asked if I wanted spaghetti added to the clams, pointing at the $12 add-on. Since he pointed at the price, I declined. He then asked about sides, again pointing at the prices. I was planning on the creamed spinach ($14). Again, I smiled and declined after his poor behavior. E. was annoyed that I was unfazed. Every signal said the same thing: they did not think we could afford to be here. The food was okay. The clam sauce tasted like lemon juice. The lamb was pungent and gamey, and the sea bass seasoning was not to my daughter's liking. I also ordered hot tea. E. listed the options: green tea, chamomile, or herbal. I chose herbal. It did not arrive. I had to ask a busboy who brought the clams out, who flagged E. down. E. asked me the flavor again from another table. "Chamomile?" I reiterated: herbal. He did not come by to apologize for the delay. When I received it, it was chamomile and not herbal. Halfway through dinner, E. passed by once. "Everything is good?" We said yes as he kept walking. Yet he stopped at other tables to check on them. I flagged him down to recook my lamb, which was too raw. Without confirming, he took my plate away. Then I overheard him say, "Box it." I thought he meant for another table. He came back with the still-raw lamb in a box and a check, then instantly took off. I never asked for the damn check. He did not misunderstand me. He confirmed with another table before boxing their food. He never asked me. He boxed my raw lamb and dropped the check while my daughter was still eating, then walked away. As soon as I placed my card on the table, E. miraculously appeared. Lucky for him, I tipped 18%, but I wanted to tip only 10% or just leave a NOTE. I selected "printed check" on the handheld. A bright green text popped up that you cannot miss: "Please wait, your server will come back with your printed receipt." He took the device, said nothing, and disappeared. I waited for the receipt. It never came, and when I noticed E. was at another table with his back toward us, we left. Once home and alone, I called the manager. Roxanne was apologetic and offered a free appetizer if we return. I declined it and stated I just want better service if we choose to give the place another visit. Roxanne handled the call with grace, and that is the only reason this is not a one star. In retrospect, I do not see us coming back anytime soon, or ever. UNACCEPTABLE!!! The Decor is a charcoal gray box with a dining room filled with 2 and 4 tops, a communal table or two, a private dining room and a curbside patio if you insist. Malbec is a perfect place to celebrate a Quinceanera, a non-Kosher Bar Mitzvah, a Golden Shower Retirement, a Gender Reveal, a Gender Conceal or that your substandard Insurance Co. will actually pay for your GPL-1 meds which you might need after over eating great food here. Within minutes of settling in a Runner runs up to your table and sets down a basket of warm Bread with a cup of Chimichurri Sauce to dunk dip, drag and/on dredge your Bread in. The Malbec Salad was large enough to feed everyone in the Recoleta at sundown. Fresh Romaine, Radicchio, Goat Cheese crumbles, a hand carved Avocado fan (I'm a big fan of that), quartered Cucumber Coins, Frisee Lettuce, a sizable slice of toasted Bread, the large mound is mixed with a Caesar-ish Dressing and the whole pile is fresh, refreshing, tasty and a great dish to begin your dinner with. The menu is ambitious to say the least. Heroic lists of Appetizers, Pastas, Pizza, Mains, Seafood, Steaks, Sides, Sauces and Desserts. The Kitchen is fearless because they know they can crank out everything on the menu properly. And you know, they can. I opted for Pollo Las Hierbas (Herb Roasted Chicken), spatchcocked (back cone removed and the whole half Chicken squashed flat for quick and easy grilling). Did I mention that the portions are substantial? They are. The Chicken begins it's journey soaking in Lemon and Herbs. For an additional $2 you can bury the whole bird with Diabla Sauce. (read Spicy Chili Gravy). This Sauce would be delicious over julienned Gym Socks or Dust Bunnies. The welcome heat is delicious even if you're timid with spice. The Chicken arrives tender but with crisp edges, juicy and tasting like Chicken could and should taste. While the Chicken was definitely marinated it's hard to determine if it was brined first. No matter as it was spot on great. The Chicken Chef was not chicken and got it right. The Sauteed Spinach retained it's Spinach integrity and was fished out of the water while still slightly toothy. Excellent. The Kitchen elevated Spinach beyond Pop-Eye's power surge urge. This was beyond just a Side Dish. Vegans, have at it. The Roasted Potatoes were also good enough to enjoy as a Main. Really crunchy nuggets with creamy centers. This place not only offers fine comida de la gente, the restaurant is efficient but doesn't rush. Want to enjoy sobremesa? (relaxing time after dinner to discuss politics, religion, sex and gossip about the people you've just dined with). Sobremesa (literally means around the table) is a charming and civilized concept. I came to Melbec with my husband for a date night and it reminded me why we love this place so much. Parking can be a bit tricky since it's on the corner and it is on an one way street, but once you're inside, it's totally worth it. This place is super cozy and romantic. We started with their empanadas (a must), then he had the homemade spinach stuffed ravioli and I got the short rib pasta. Everything was so delicious. A group of us descended upon Malbec to celebrate a special event and we all had a great time. One of us selected a Prosecco to start and a Malbec to accompany the main course. My gnocchi (spelled "Ñoquis" in Spanish) were rich and delicious, served with roasted bone marrow. We also split an order of empanadas and a beet/arugula salad, which were fantastic. I was able to make a reservation through OpenTable, which was very simple and user-friendly. For starters, I ordered the Pulpo Al Aji Amarillo (grilled Mediterranean octopus), which was grilled to perfection! For the main, I ordered the Arroz Con Mariscos For One (seafood paella) and the Tabla Mixta. For the Tabla Mixta, you're able to choose two cuts (or more), so I opted for the Entraña (USDA skirt steak) and the Ojo De Bife (Argentinean Rib Eye). I absolutely enjoyed the Rib Eye with my sides of mashed potatoes and grilled asparagus. To end the night, I ordered crepes that came with a Nutella spread, strawberries, bananas, and a side of vanilla ice cream. For entrée, we ordered the Arroz con Mariscos (seafood paella), rib eye steak (ojo de bife), New York steak and sorrentinos pasta. Arroz con Mariscos was solid and on point. Seafood tasted fresh and bursting with flavor, even octopus was tender. Good portion and perfect for sharing. Sorrentinos pasta was rich and satisfying. The steaks arrived beautifully charred and cooked to perfect medium. Both came with 3 types of chimichurri sauce, which really enhances the flavor of the steak. Dessert was fantastic. I got complimentary scoop of ice cream for my birthday which paired well with bread pudding and crème brulee topped with berries. So glad we picked this place again. This was my first time trying Argentinean steak, and I was really pleased! The steaks are 16oz and for the price it's really good value compared to other steakhouses I've been to. We got the ribeye and New York and asked for medium rare, and to our astonishment this might be the first time our steaks were actually cooked to the our specification. The ribeye was super tender, I enjoyed this a lot more than the New York which was tougher, but that was to be expected. I liked how the edges on both were slightly charred. I also got the ceviche with tuna and octopus, and this was probably my favorite dish of the night. The tuna was so fresh along with the other ingredients, and the octopus had a nice firm texture. Loved the chips! We got the crepes for dessert since our waiter said that was their best seller. To be honest, I enjoyed the vanilla ice cream a lot more, haha, but I still enjoyed the chewy texture of the crepes. Like the steaks, the crepes also had charred edges which gave it an extra crunch. When I first walked into the restaurant, there was one other party there. It was around 12:30 and it wasn't very busy. We sat down and ordered our meal. I ordered spicy beef empanadas, cheese and corn empanadas, skirt steak which came along with a salad, grilled pacific sole, and grilled skirt steak. My favorites were the corn and cheese empanadas and the sole. The sole was tender and flavorful. I thought the steak could have been more tender and maybe less salt on the spicy beef empanadas. For my entree I ordered TROFIE, RAGU & CARACU with a side of CREMA DE CHOCLO. Malbec Argentinean Cuisine was a solid dinner spot overall, especially if you're craving a good steak. We started with the Remolachas y Peras, which served as our salad, and it was fresh and flavorful. After that, there was a noticeable wait before the rest of the food arrived. The Lomo wrapped with applewood bacon, hongos provenzal, and puré de papas took quite a long time to come out. At one point, I jokingly said to my date, "What are they doing back there, fetching the cow?" It was a busy Saturday night, so the delay wasn't entirely surprising, but it was definitely felt. Once the food arrived, it was worth the wait. The Lomo, cooked medium rare, was hands down my favorite so juicy, tender, and packed with flavor. The sides were comforting and well-prepared, and everything came with a side of warm bread, which was a nice touch. Our reservation was at 6:15 pm, and they seated me right away while my date went to look for parking, which was a pain in that area on a Saturday evening. If you're wearing heels, I highly recommend having your date drop you off first while they circle for parking. Service was mostly fine, but the waiter rubbed me the wrong way toward the end of the night. I was set on ordering all three desserts, and he kept questioning me, then looked to my date as if he needed to approve. Six of us came here to celebrate our girlfriend's birthday dinner, and we had such a great time! Nice place, nice vibes. We split the tomahawk steak and it was delicious, beautifully presented and served piping hot. We added mushrooms, mashed potatoes, and creamed corn as sides, and everything was awesome. The service was excellent, and we truly enjoyed ourselves. I did take off one star because we ordered two desserts, the bread pudding and the choco torta, and unfortunately, neither one was our favorite. That said, I would still highly recommend this place if you're looking for great food and excellent service. We'll definitely be back! read more

This place is a carnivore's dream! We arrived with a serious appetite and left thoroughly satisfied. We came around 4:00 PM on a Saturday and were seated right away. At that time, it wasn't too busy or noisy, which made for a relaxed dining experience. The atmosphere is prettty low-lit and classy, creating a cozy, yet professional vibe. We kicked things off with the clams, bread and oil, and enjoyed iced tea to drink. For sides, we ordered a mix of veggies and creamy mashed potatoes. The main course was a feast, featuring a variety of meats and seafood that we selected ourselves which included steak, sausage, scallops, etc. Everything was cooked exactly to our liking: tender, flavorful, and clearly high quality. You can really taste the care that goes into the food. If you're coming with a large group, I'd recommend ordering several sides and a few shared plates for the table. Malbec is an Argentinian restaurant located in the heart of Pasadena offering traditional Argentinian / Spanish fare in a cozy setting. Our family came on New Year's Day in the early evening. We were greeted and chose a table in a quiet corner; the restaurant is austere, classic, simple, dimly lit, and cozy. After an initial offering of bread and seasoned olive oil we shared the Arroz Con Mariscos for Two ($79), essentially a large seafood paella. The paella was perfect, with excellent, flavorful rice and vegetables, and an appropriate amount of seafood, with a generous supply of calamari and octopus and a smaller, but appropriate, number of scallops, shrimp, and mussels. This was followed by the Costillitas de Cordero - 18oz of Lamb Chops ($58), which were excellent; 4 generous rib chop pieces, 3 cooked to a perfect medium rare (1 overcooked to a medium well) and seasoned perfectly. They were paired with an included Porcini sauce, a Madeira wine and mushroom mixture which I found unremarkable, and didn't add much to the savory chops. We completed with the Panqueques de Dulce de Leche ($16) a pair of crepes drenched in delicious chocolate and caramel for a rich, flawless flavor, which were paired with ice cream and fresh fruit. Service was friendly and appropriate. Value, as above, was a little lacking; while the food was great, in my opinion each item was priced about 10-20% higher than justified, especially for a restaurant off the main Pasadena beat. Came here on a Saturday night with 2 friends. Made a reservation online two days in advance, plenty of openings. First time trying based on a friends recommendation. When we arrived it was busy but got seated right away. Parking is hard to find. If you're lucky, you can find street parking, or if you go a couple blocks away, you can find some public lots. Ambiance: We were sat in the outside covered area. It was nice and cozy but the inside looked way nicer. Service: Excellent service. Our Waiter was attentive, friendly and answered all our questions. Food: I was disappointed with the food. It was fine, not bad, but nothing I would come back for. I had higher expectations based on reviews and price. It started with small pieces of slightly stale bread with chimichuri sauce (that was tasty). Burrata appetizer was good. I got the potato pasta and shared the filet. The pasta was ok, mediocore. The Filet was nothing special, cooked nicely but quality was like something I could get from the grocery store. My friend enjoyed the rib eye. crème brûlée for dessert was really good, highlight of the meal. Cocktails were good. Overall: I'm a foodie and appreciate a good authentic meal. Like I said, it's not bad, it was decent, but I wouldn't want to come here again or recommend it to a friend. It had been a while that we had gone there. Why did we wait that long? Everything was very nice. We were a larger group but they arranged a nice table for us. The staff was very attentive. The food was very delicious, at least on my plate with a medium-rare steak which was wonderful and looked with awe at a steak on another plate that per that patron's request had been done more than well-done ... But let's face it, the food was great: Spinach Empanada and Empanada Dinner, Mollejas Champagne, Entrana al Chimichurri, Brochette, Ojo de bife, and for the table to share some Mushrooms Provenzal, Creamed Spinach and Cebiche Trio ... Everything was to the point, nicely presented and definitely not shabby. Updating the review to include an appetizer you must try - grilled octopus! I've had octopus before but it never made me want to make octopus a go to item. Well, this dish changed my mind! The octopus was grilled to perfection and accompanied by roasted potatoes and an aioli sauce. All of the flavors complimented each other and I will definitely be reordering this item again. Also, for those of you who grew up with your mom making you flan out of a box, you must try the flan here. This isn't a diss but a compliment as it is nostalgic. IFYKYK. I did ask if they used the box mix and I was told it was made fresh daily but not from a box lolz. I had to know. This flan is perfect, it is not too heavy like some versions are. These clams were delicious! Oh I'm still dreaming about them. The food was great here. We came for our anniversary dinner and we were not disappointed. The waiter was very attentive and made sure we had everything we needed. Water was always filled. I wish I got to try the drinks here but we only had wine. There is lots of indoor seating as well as seating at the bar and outside. It's dimly light inside where we were seating giving it a very intimate feeling. read more
