Black Chicken is a really neat little spot in downtown Matthews. I must admit that when I first went last year, I was worried that Matthews couldn't support something like this, but fortunately the place seems to be doing good business. The owner is very knowledgeable, and the selection, while not large, is interesting and varied. The real charm of this place, however, is not in buying bottles to take home, but in hanging out while watching people go by. It's quite the pleasant way to spend a Saturday afternoon, especially when the weather is pretty enough to sit outside. read more

Good little wine shop with a large selection and very fair prices for bottles even when you drink them at the shop. We've discovered a few great wines here. The owner will allow you a taste of any wine he currently sells by the glass, but in my experience that only happened when I specifically asked for it, which is a bit of an awkward moment every time. The locals/regulars that I see there seem to be having a great time talking to the owner whenever I go (four or five times so far), but personally my questions were always answered rather curtly, without a chance at a conversation developing, which is disappointing at a small cozy place like this. Maybe this is due to the fact that they always have their TV running with some kind of sporting event, which I hate for being a conversation killer. read more

What an incredible hidden gem! I met up with Adam R. and Peter E. for some vino on a Friday night... Wow! I am still amazed and can't wait to go back. It is small and very cozy... offers patio seating and enough people to watch from the neighboring bars Jason, the owner, was very friendly and helpful. I didn't feel out of place by not being a vino expert. With that being said, I look forward to returning to see what I can learn. Not to mention, good conversation. For the folks who'd rather have a glass of wine, Downtown Matthews offers you the Black Chicken Wine Cellar. I've only been twice, but I really enjoy the large selection of wines by the glass or bottles (stay in or to go, whatever you fancy). They also have a decent selection of bottled beer from their cooler if you're not a Wine-O like me. The inside is dark-ish (in a good way) and intimate and they also have patio seating like their neighboring beer temple. Such a great spot to sip and relax! Maybe you're looking to do a mini bar crawl in Matthews - this spot is open til 10 on the weekend and the owner is very kind and won't kick you out right away. I hope with more traffic these watering holes in Matthews will stay open a smidge later! read more

Love this little spot. Just here for a glass but Rose the bartender was knowledgeable and the TV playing football was a nice benefit. Tables outside if it's nince. Seemed like some of the other business would walk over food to you. Look forward to stopping back. About 15 different by the glass choices plus you can open up any bottle in the shop. read more

A bit disappointed this evening. Waited an hour for a simple appetizer and the band never played which appeared to be setting up the 2 hours we were there. While the staff apologized for less than acceptable service it seemed like simply comping the app would have been a minimum here. When visiting this venue I like to sing Black Chicken instead of Black Betty because it's fun, and what a coincidence this little place is fun too! Super friendly service, wall-to-wall appropriately priced wine, and if you like a little cheese on the side that's for purchase too! We sat outside as it was a lovely day, and my one tiny complaint is that it's a rather small patio area (3 tables)...and both tables on either side of us were puffing away at their little smokies which really ruined the experience of sipping on a nice Malbec and fresh air simultaneously. Next time I am in the Matthews area I will definitely pop back into the Black Chicken for a glass of wine ...though I may choose to sit inside : ) read more

My wife and I love this place!!! It is very difficult to find a wine shop where the person selling the wine is familiar with every bottle in the shop, but this is definitely one of those places. Jason, the owner, has impressed us with some of the best bottles we've had. We recommend you go in, tell Jason what you like, and he will pick a bottle that will blow you away! This place is an absolute gem in the heart of Matthews!! With Jason's knowledge of wine he can assist the newbie wine drinker to the seasoned veteran of the grape. The food was okay but we had already finished our meal and never got our appetizer and we were ready to leave, the waitress said it still was not done and it would be another 5 min and then said we could take it to go. We asked for a refund but she seemed irritated we didn't want to wait to eat the appetizer after we were already completely done or wait to take it to go. I guess they have a new chef but usually your appetizer comes out first and we didn't expect a simple appetizer to take so long. read more

Now it's so much more open, great local beers on tap, and the wine selection is hand picked to provide a good sampling of all areas. I love this place. The wine list is first class and while not in Charlotte as much as I would like, will visit when back in town. Although small in size, this spot is a must for pre-dinner mingling or after dinner conversation. Jason knows his "stuff" and available to you without hovering over you. Check out the blackboard for the pourings and you can not got wrong. This is such a great addition to the area and location is everything. The clientele varied from local business employees stopping by for a quick glass of wine before going home to small groups either coming from dining in the area or were headed there. The outdoor seating will be a must when the weather allows. The small town feel surrounding this wine bar will certainly draw people for return visits. A must in my book to try! read more

It's a little further than I'd like to go for a good wine store (it's about a 20 minute drive for me), but I love their selections and the staff is very helpful. I enjoyed a glass of wine on the patio on a gorgeous Saturday afternoon, brought a few snacks with me and ended up purchasing the bottle. Seating inside or outside. I was a little confused by the layout of their selectiosn but the girl working very simply went through literally their entire inventory. I love that they love wine and will talk to you about it. This store is the furthest thing from those big box stores, where they have regular tastings and just promote whatever they're told to. Black chicken has a very casual and friendly wine-loving atmosphere. All errands run in the Matthews area will start or stop here for now on for me! read more

Black Chicken is so fab! I stumbled across it right after they opened last year and have spent many, many, many days and nights chillin' at the Chicken. It is a great spot to meet for an afternoon social, before dinner, after dinner or any time during the day/night! They have a great selection of wine and the staff are very friendly and helpful. The shop is small and there are only about 3 tables outside for patio seating. Inside, the atmosphere is intimate and inviting - definitely a great spot for a date night. Went here last night with a friend while we were in Matthews in search of a place with a patio to enjoy the beautiful weather. There are a few places to choose from in downtown Matthews but we picked Black Chicken because we wanted something to eat too and there a few more selections down towards the library. We chose a bottle of Riesling and the lady working there poured our glasses and kept the bottle in the fridge for us to keep cold as we were sitting outside on the patio. We were able to walk a few shops down to get a crepe - the owner even brought it to our table when it was ready. Love the convenience of the location and the friendly staff! What a great spot! We go in here at least once a month. Jason, the owner always has a great wine suggestion--we usually share a bottle. We tend towards reds and he is very good at asking questions and making suggestions. Its a great deal too because he has a lot of bottles at reasonable prices ($20-30). Boutique wine shop in Matthews that I have frequented many times. I ordered a case of 2009 Bourdeaux from Jason, and he is extremely knowledgable and patient through what can be a finicky process. Every bottle I have ordered on site has been excellent. read more
