Not a wine guy at all, but came here regardless. My review for a wine bar might be a little biased on account that this is my first time in one. Prices were pretty good for beer and they had a few cooler doors stocked of craft beer. I guess the service was good, but there was something about the ambiance, which had a slight aire of snobbiness, that made me feel a little uncomfortable, as weird as that sounds. Then again, maybe all wine bars are like that. Just don't expect a down-to-earth vibe that you might get from some bars. read more

My husband and I visited the Cellar Door for a Groupon that I had purchased a few months ago. I'm glad I waited awhile to use it because we were able to take advantage of the beautiful outdoor seating area. We sat at one of the high topped wine barrel tables and enjoyed the weather, our delicious drinks, and the awesome music. To me, the jams can make or break an establishment.. and at this place, the music was great! Our server, who I think is the owner, was super friendly and sat outside and chatted with us and all the other customers for awhile. We also ordered the cheese and meat plate, 7 selections for $20... very reasonable I thought. They had varying sizes of the plate but for $20 I couldn't say no to trying everything my heart could desire! I also saw some of the other food items being served up to other tables and they looked absolutely delicious as well! Nice little establishment with comfy seating and a nice selection of wines and nosh foods. Very friendly staff, beautifully decorated with a cozy and welcoming atmosphere. The only thing that was disappointing (and even not that much) was the staff member we dealt with didn't really seem to know that much about the wines they have and how to pair them best with the foods available at the location. Walking down Main Street in downtown Downers Grove after getting off the train, I wanted to get a nice glass of wine on a nice summer night after work. Little did I know that I would stumble upon this gem in the heart of Downers grove. I sat on the beautiful outside patio with a co-worker sipping on a glass of wine for my happy hour. This wine bar/restaurant is located in beautiful downtown Downers Grove. The place has a cozy, comfortable feel and a fun atmosphere. There is limited seating so recommended to make reservations just to be safe. They have a large wine selection as good bears on draft. The staff works hard and are friendly. On Wednesday nights they have trivia which is a lot of fun. The food is tasty but I give this place 4 stars and not 5 because the portions are small in my opinion and are a bit pricy. We have been a customer of this place for as long as it has been open. After management and staff have changed a few times it seems, I think they are getting it right, or at least well on their way. Their selection of bottled wine is good and if you are in the mood to sip a glass of wine or have one of their 3 on tap beers (which change) you can do so either at the comfy couch, bar stools or even the separate private room in the back. This place is generally crowded. They offer a large screen TV and generally have it set to a game. Their fare is good, offering items from the spinach artichoke dip to the sandwiches. Alex and his staff do a good job with groups too. It is not a large place. But that is OK. They will make room. They do have live music weekly. And for you all who like trivia night, they have this too. I have suggested a few more dessert items to be added to the menu. While the couple they do have are good, a little more chocolate would be perfect. read more

New to the area and saw this place. First time we tried to get in the manager basically told us not to come in. "We are short handed and the wait is really long" so we left. On a Sunday in the middle of the day we decided to cool off and try the place. Had to ask if we could sit down as no one was near the front. So, we found a table and then waited.......finally we asked if we needed to order upfront. We were told that a server would be over. Well, he looked disgusted that he had to wait on us. Sour look on his face. I would of thought that he was having a bad day but clearly him and the female bartender/waitress were having a great time. It's too bad cause we love wine and the place looked really fun. Our food finally came out of the kitchen but it sat on the bar till another kitchen person came out and brought it to us. The appetizer we had was good though. Unfortunately I can get good apps elsewhere that also comes with service. Too bad really wanted to like it here. read more

I've been here a couple times. It's a small restaurant with lots of shelves lined with bottled wine, a small bar and a few tables. It's cozy. I really enjoy the sangria here and all of the food I've ordered has been good also. The only thing I really have a problem with is the lack of service I've received here each time. It leaves me with a bad vibe, I feel like I'm always being ignored. I don't think I should have to stop the waiter to order my food, another drink or ask for silverware. And it's been every time. I'll still come back but I hope they step up the service. read more

Love the Cellar door but just a warning, sometimes it gets a little loud. They have great food and delicious wine! I love the wine program and have been able to try several new wines that I honestly wouldn't have tried had I not been a member. I have been in several times and had to wait to find a seat so thats a little annoying but its a smaller restaurants so I can't really be mad. If I wanted to get in and sit down right away I would go across the street...but I don't so i can't whine. I do have to say, there is one guy that works there thats a little less than inviting but I generally steer clear of him so he doesn't get under my skin. All in all, great place. read more

This is a favorite place of ours to go and get a great glass of wine and listen to some music. The staff is friendly and knowledgeable so if you don't feel very comfortable in a wine bar knowing your stuff they are happy to guide you and they don't make you feel foolish. I had a Groupon for lunch here. The food was good, the wine selection, not surprisingly was wonderful. My husband would have been more enthused if they had a wider selection of draft beers. I had the Asian chicken wrap; the chicken was tender and flavorful, and the chipotle sauce that went with it was quite tasty. They have package wines and beers here. I found a yummy red blend that I purchased a bottle of not knowing if I could find it easily elsewhere. Turns out I paid TWICE as much as it sells for elsewhere. I don't begrudge a business making a profit, but that was a bit offensive. Service was good, and the décor cute. They have an outdoor seating area, but as it is on Main Street, it is a bit loud because of traffic. read more

The Cellar Door has long been a favorite spot for a nice glass of wine in a great atmosphere! The staff is always helpful and quite knowledgeable on wine and menu items. They have recently stepped up their game in the beer department as well adding 12 rotating taps! Recently I was tasked with hosting an impromptu office gathering. Cheese and wine was suggested and of course this was the first place that came to mind! I spoke with Anthony and we worked out an order that I would pick up for our event. Came in about 3 pm and it was very quiet - in a good way. We were able to explain what kind of wine we enjoy -- and Ryan brought us back two glasses that fit us perfectly! We weren't terribly hungry, but opted for a cheese and charcuterie flight with manchego, Brie, Gouda, and Red Devil (a lightly spiced cheddar!) along with prosciutto and soppressata. This place has a wide selection of wine and beers. I love that the groupon included a selection of food but was not keen on the one glass of wine. I wish it included a flight of wine tasters. However, the house wine was decent and the food display was incredible. You choose three items from the meat/cheese list and three items from a list of almonds, cranberries, and other small options. I've been here a few times and the food is always top notch. I've had the Cuban, Vietnamese Tacos, and many of the meats and cheeses. You get 7 choices for 20 bucks, which is a pretty good deal. All the things I've had have been priced decently. My only gripe is that they had have house red and white for $3 on Mondays, so I ordered the house merlot. Well apparently there is only one specific red that is $3. Why would't you just say which one it is on the menu then? It misleading makes you think that all the house reds and whites are on sale. Great wine, great food, great time. I have come here around 5 times in the last year, and always want to come back for more. Friendly service and knowledgable servers always. Fun place to sit and have a glass of wine or two and catch up with a friend. Lovely way to start a date night as well! In the summer there are outdoors tables, and it is delightful to watch the Friday night car shows while sipping delicious wine. They often have groupons for 2 glasses of a house wine and a cheese/charcuterie tray. We like to use the groupon and then add on another glass or two off the wine list! We went on a Sunday afternoon, it was a nice fall day. We sat outside. It wasn't very crowded. Our server was very attentive and sweet, The atmosphere was pleasant. A good selection of wines, reasonably priced. We had a cheese flight, which was good. OK here it comes. HOWEVER, the Pananni was pretty lame. It was like none that I have ever had before. Turkey with brie. The bread reminded me of 'par-baked' bread that you finish baking at home. I guess the paninni press was not working. So basicly it was a partially cooked roll with dry turkey, brie and apple. Not so good. If you go for wine and cheese, you'll be A-OK. I should have paid attention to the other yelper who did not recommend the pananni. read more

A friend and I walked in to this place last week and the joint was empty. They have a decent selection of craft beers in bottles and 8-10 on tap. I asked the guy standing right in front of me and the tap what style one of the tap beers was as it just had the name of the beer on the tap handle. This guy didn't even look at me....Totally ignored me......and the place was empty. The other guy that was about 20 feet away finally answered after the silence went on for too long. We walked out based solely on the poor staff. I have been drinking craft beers since way before it became popular and this place could've been a place that I would have visited on a regular basis to sample the tap beers. Too bad. read more

love this place. I would say its my favorite bar in Downers but its not really a traditional bar. however, it is still the go to place for me and my husband (and friends). nice casual atmosphere - side walk seating in the summer is great!! I will say it does get crowded around dinner time on the weekends but usually thins out around 10pm. I have been for a quick drink before a movie at the Tivoli and for drinks with friends for the night. the cheese board is amazing - highly recommend. all the food I have had here has been good as well, the bruschetta is also a highlight. the only "complaint" I have (along with other people I know) is that the chairs at the tables are not really comfortable. they just seem slightly on the small side. however, that has not stopped any of us from coming here. beer and wine selection are great - they get some cool summer beers too. the tap selection changes. some reviewers said the wait staff is pushy and they want to turn tables like a diner but I have never had that problem or seen it happen. I generally find you have to call them to your table on a rare occasion, feels more like European cafe service than pushy diner. so get a glass of wine or beer and a plate of cheese and enjoy! read more

With the change in staff a couple of years ago, this place has gone down hill. My husband and I ued to be in the wine of the month club and go to Friday night wine tastings and were always treated with respect. Once the change in staff, they could care less how long we've been going there or getting to know our names. We gave it a shot for another couple of months with no luck, and the service was SLOW!
