La Marea is a "special event" type of place. The prices out pace the content. Inside, the place is lovely. A bit loud and tight, but nice decor and welcoming feel. Everything felt fresh, new, and clean. The dishes were small and the prices were large. This felt like Manhattan dining. The gnocchi were done very well though and I finished it off. The Brussel sprout salad (Insalata di Cavoletti di Bruxelle) had one piece of walnut and a few slices of apple and no dressing whatsoever. It was very very light. I ate it as is assuming that's how the salad was intended to be. It needed more tartness and would have been better if the sprouts were roasted gently first. The best part of the meal was dessert. The sfogliatelli were surprisingly very good. Crispy and warm and the filling was done well. The most likely baked them frozen on site, but they are sourcing them from a good bakery. All in all, this is a very special occasion kind of place and if you are in the area and ok dropping $100/person for ambiance and a decent meal, then try this place out. If you are going out for ladies night, like I did, try a place where the food is cheaper and the drinks are stronger.

Margarita Pizza & Fresh Halibut lunch special

Finding a casually elegant restaurant that's open for lunch on a Saturday is a rare thing. We recently had the good fortune to find a restaurant of this caliber - La Marea. that is open for lunch AND is right off of I-95 !!! Impressions: The chefs at La Marea lean into Italian/Continental fare with confidence & an abundance of creativity. Their slightly abbreviated lunch menu covers all bases & includes many different dessert options. We like that there are several different types of salads offered. We started with a Caesar salad, easily shared between 2; it was good although it could have used a bit more anchovy umami & fresh lemon to really make it pop. My dining companion's margarita pizza was delicious as was the spinach & ricotta stuffed crapes. My lunch special of pan seared halibut was perfectly cooked, delicate in texture, the fish being exceedingly fresh in taste. This dish was paired with whipped potatoes & a fresh vegetable -asparagus-charred nicely too ! End of meal espresso & cappuccino were sublime & served hot & in tandem with our desserts - a very good thing. The restaurant's inside dining areas are well appointed & comfortable. Service is both professional & genuinely friendly. Visitors to Connecticut's eastern shoreline will find great food & hospitality at La Marea. We are looking forward to returning to La Marea for dinner very soon.

Came here while on vacation in the area since we wanted some Italian. My food was good I just think a meat sauce would've been better with like penne or something :P I could've asked for that, just didn't. Our son enjoyed himself and it was a nice place. Waitress was super nice and fast when we wanted to get out of there because our boy was expecting his routine of if you eat dinner, you get ice cream! Lol.

    Owner was so nice!!

Nothing special here. Portions are small. Overpriced. Would not rush back. Service was good though.

The food here is incredible, I recommend getting the eggplant appetizer, their homemade pasta and don't leave without dessert.

Expensive for what you get. Price of the seafood dishes was unrealistic. Maybe in a high end restaurant in some destination!

Sal's Pizza & Pasta - Old Saybrook, CT…read more Slice Mob Takeover Nine members of the Slice Mob walked into Sal's Pizza & Pasta hungry. The pizzas never stood a chance. Located in Old Saybrook, Sal's is spacious, comfortable, and welcoming, with Italian classics playing in the background and plenty of room for a large gathering. It proved to be the perfect setting for a Slice Mob takeover. A variety of pizzas made their way to our tables, but I started with the basics: crushed tomatoes, fresh garlic, and grated Parmesan. Sometimes simple is best. Built on a beautifully crisp crust that held up from first bite to last, this pizza let the tomatoes shine. They were lightly seasoned and full of flavor, supported by the punch of garlic and the salty bite of Parmesan. No unnecessary distractions. Just a really well-executed pizza. Next up was Sal's Works. Same great crust and sauce foundation, loaded with sausage, pepperoni, bacon, roasted peppers, mushrooms, onions, and mozzarella. This pie struck a nice balance between meat-lover indulgence and vegetable-forward freshness. The toppings were applied with restraint and purpose, allowing every ingredient to contribute. Salty, sweet, savory, and packed with contrasting textures, from crispy bacon to tender sausage and vegetables, every bite worked. As more pizzas arrived, the room got a little quieter. That's usually a good sign. The Slice Mob tends to have plenty to say, but when great pizza hits the table, conversation takes a back seat. What stood out most? Not a single complaint from anyone. And if you've ever dined with the Slice Mob, you know that's about as rare as finding a parking spot in New Haven on a Saturday night. Michael, the second-generation owner, came out to greet us and pose for a photo. Super nice guy, humble, appreciative, and genuinely happy to see us. He also couldn't help but comment on the number of pizzas we ordered. Fair observation. We may have slightly exceeded the recommended daily allowance of pizza. The restaurant is beautiful. The staff was friendly and attentive. The food was excellent. And perhaps most surprising in today's world, the prices were incredibly reasonable. Judging by the smiles around the room, the empty trays, and the steady stream of pizzas coming out of the kitchen, Sal's didn't just feed the Slice Mob. They won us over. Great owners. Great staff. Great pizza. Sal's Pizza & Pasta is officially Slice Mob Approved. Pizza is life. See you at the next slice.

We ordered a large regular pizza with extra cheese and a large salad. Before the food came out, the server brought us a large basket of warm bread and butter, which we were not expecting. That won us over immediately. Before long, she brought us an absolutely enormous salad. It had a nice variety of vegetables and a delicious balsamic vinegar and olive oil dressing. The pizza was perfectly cooked with a slight char, a nicely flavored cheese mix and a slightly sweet tomato sauce. The crust was thin and had a great texture. We were thrilled, and will definitely be back.
