I have been a Professor at Hostos Community College for 25 years and the "Central Park West Dental Studio" located at 350 Central Park West is by far the worst Dental operation I have known my entire life. I was a serious pain based on two toothaches so I found what I thought was a reputable business. I chose "Central Park Dental Studio" because it is advertised as being headed by Genevieve Fernandes, DDS, a Latina graduate from Columbia Dental School. Since I work in a Latino-serving institution, I figured I'd give a young Latina my business. The office assistant, a former Hostos student proved a weak spot and informed me my Guardian insurance covered most of my costs and not to worry. I arrived for an appointment Fernandes never appeared instead a low-level Dentist named Stump substituted and did my dental work. A credentialed Latina being used as a drawing card is outrageous. Based on x-rays, cleaning, extractions, and one visit they tried to charge me $14,000 though after numerous letter exchanges and verbal conflicts, I ended up paying less. I reached out to Fernandes but she never had the courtesy of responding. The billing practice is apparently to keep overcharging and changing charges and underbundling. While I lay in pain on the dentist's chair, they also tried to pressure me to buy Finance Insurance. The office Director, Daniel Ludwick plays loose with bills and helps bulk the clients. Working class people, especially Latinos, I advise you to stay away from this dentist operation and not be taken in by the webpage. I learned a costly valuable lesson. Am now looking for a first-class dentist office of integrity and may have to get the work done over. I came here for an emergency during this crazy Covid-19 outbreak! I normally hate going to the dentist! So it took me a long to to actually show up not to mention being in pain. I found this place through google and wasn't expecting much. However, this dental studio is amazing. It's clean, the staff was professional and inviting and the dentist was great! He took his time to explain what was going on and what needed to be done. He wasn't scary at all! He was a very nice man! Worst dental office! RUNNN! I have insurance yet i paid upfront as they told me to, they said they would apply for the refund and I would get a check back from my insurance. 2 months passed by and I didn't get any refund!!! I paid $2,000 and when I called my insurance they said they been sent the check and the office cashed it!! When I called the office first they didn't want to answer, then for a week straight the receptionist said to call back tomorrow for the manager, every day! Then she said we're gonna cut the check. The check was cutting for another week...when I called again and said I'll come pick up the check, she said oh no actually this will get refunded to your card. Then another 2 days passed nothing hit my account, I called the office she said to call my bank. Oh and not to forget the receptionist said she sent me an email for the refund that will hit my account and of course I never got that email. So i asked her to resend it and she said she can't it came from a finance portal? When I asked her to read me back the email it was sent to, she said it was written on a piece of paper and it was thrown out afterwards. Called my bank and they don't see any refund even pending. So I'm disputing the charge with my bank now since the office is not cooperating. Do not go here it's a SCAM! read more

Saw them for a cleaning right before pandemic closed NYC. They said I need a cavity filled. Kept on pushing it and refused to just do the cleaning. I got upset and left. Worried during lockdown my teeth would get worse. They didn't. Went to a different dentist. He found no issues with those teeth. Went to a 3rd dentist. He also x-rayed and confirmed those teeth were fine. That was the second time I was lied by them about work I needed. read more

I don't even write reviews but I was so displeased with this visit I had to. I had a toothache, so my partner helped me to find a dentist in the area to remedy it. The dentist listed on the site we used is not the dentist I saw. Fine. Many offices probably have rotating specialists and/or substitute based on demand. Yet, there were three days pre-surgery that Central Park West Dental Studio could've used to inform me of this change in surgeons. The site we used is partly based on accurate reviews, so a vendor who switches the doctor on you is violating the integrity of the review process. Early, it felt like the bait-and-switch was on. The doctor I saw did his best with shaky hands. Yea, I said that. My doc's hands were shaking as he extracted two teeth from my skull. Friends, no amount of nitrous oxide can prepare you for the terror. In contrast to the swift motion of processing my dental insurance, and drumming up my tab, the wait for a (new, unidentified) surgeon, took over an hour. Both in the consultation visit and on surgery day. I've felt intense pain from the treatment, and felt unprepared for the pain management process as the efficient office manager compared soreness I'd feel to "chewing a really big wad of gum." I think he meant to say "chewing a really big wad of rusty nails wrapped inside of razors." I couldn't really eat or swallow for a week. During my follow up, Señor Shakes jabbed a Q-tip into my healing sores even after I described the nagging pain I'd had. Thanks, guy. Felt great. Please do not support this office nor the Bad Mechanic trickery they use to lure the vulnerable and aching. I went to another dentist where we'll continue treatment, because I feel comfortable with her and she's done everything to prepare me for next steps. There is still a fragment of the tooth remaining and I wouldn't dare go back to Central Park West Dental studio to finish the hatchet job they did on my mouth. read more

Avoid this practice at all costs. Both the diagnoses and billing I received were either fabricated, fraudulent, or just plain incompetence. I am considering reporting them to the New York State Office of Professional Discipline. I am only posting this review to warn other potential patients. I will say the receptionist, patient care coordinator, and dentist I interacted with are extremely nice and friendly. However, upon my first visit, I was told I needed well over 10 fillings (withholding exact number for privacy purposes). Although a portion of this would have been covered by my insurance, the out-of-pocket charge would have been $500/a filling - which they told me was a "discounted" rate they would provide for me. I consulted 4 (FOUR) other dentists with my images and records and they all only confirmed I had 1 (one) cavity. I obviously chose to have my dental work done elsewhere. However, after having paid my deductible and copay at the time of my visit, I was sent a bill for a routine cleaning and exam for over $1200 (after what my insurance and I already paid). This includes fees such as a "hygiene consultation" for $201. read more

This place is a total sham. I went twice- the first cleaning was fine, although the tech spent most of it trying to sell me on various expensive and unnecessary products. But I later discovered that they never submitted that visit to my insurance. This is sketchy because if a doctor's office takes more than 12 months to submit a claim, insurance won't pay for it. I had to nag them repeatedly to actually submit the claim to insurance. A patient should never have to do that. By the second visit, six months later, my insurance had changed. I neglected to make sure they were in-network, and that was on me, so I ended up having to pay for the visit out of pocket. Fine, my mistake. But this place took months to finally send me the itemized bill, and when I received it, I saw that they were trying to charge me over EIGHT HUNDRED DOLLARS for a standard cleaning, no add-ons. I know multiple dentists personally and that is an absurd, scam-indicative up-charge. One of the line items that they were trying to charge hundreds of dollars for was a "hygiene consultation," which must have been the tech telling me, "You must floss daily, your gums look great," when in fact I hadn't flossed a single time since the last visit. I complained vigorously about this bill and they immediately lowered it to $220. When you're upcharging $600 for made-up services, that screams scam. They never did confirm that the first appointment was taken care of by insurance, despite my contacting them via phone/email over ten times (I counted). DO NOT MAKE ANY APPOINTMENTS HERE. read more

The doctor Fernandes have an attitude and speaks bad to her staff I went there for the first time and they were having a meeting while Patients were sitting. Staff is amazing only reason I stayed. I have Blue Cross Blue Shield of $2,000 I was told I will be coming out of pocket for bonding over $3,000 they charge you for 475 for one filling I then get this Daniel guy treated his staff like they were dumb he then brush me off because I told him why not to use my insurance They have new doctors every week had an excellent doctor Cho which seems she will not be coming back and I don't blame her Bottom line there are many other doctors in the area that are humble and would take care of you dr. In Fall 2011 I received a deal on my e-mail from AmazonLocal to get a discount on professional dental cleaning, x-rays, dental exam and diagnosis, and digital camera analysis from Central Park West Dental Studio. I have never had problems with my teeth. I was just expecting the dentist, Genevieve Fernandes, B.D.S., D.D.S., who I met with to have my teeth cleaned. Instead, she told me that I had two cavities and pressured me to get fillings right away. I found this hard to believe because I wasn't experiencing any pain. I told her that I would wait on getting the fillings. The next week I went to an experienced dentist at another dental practice who assured me that I did not have any cavities. I was so relieved when I found this out. It has been 5 years and I still don't have any cavities. Genevieve Fernandes, B.D.S., D.D.S. is trying to make money and cheat clients. Don't ever go to her. My experience was the worst ever, the turn over for dentist was so frequent every appointment I was presented with a new doctor. The first doctor gave me crowns knowing I needed a root canal prior. After within 3 months one tooth sprung an infection. They then tried to do a root canal without removing the crown by drilling a hole in the crown. With that the tooth broke, I had to have that tooth pulled. Out of the 3 crowns they urged me to replace only one remains. read more

Over that time I have been seen by several doctors and interacted with probably all of the staff. They are always helpful, friendly and professional, and I am alway attended promptly. I have never had a complaint about the work during or after. Far from being scammers, they have always worked with my limited budget to ensure that I can get the treatment I need despite not having dental insurance. I have never felt tricked or surprised by any charges. They always explain everything before beginning any work, so I am never surprised after the fact. I started going to this Dental Place in 2004. Never went back until 2017. In 2004 it was a very nice comfortable and nice place. But, now in 2017 it has become the greediest Un professional disgusting dental place ever.. Was referred here by a colleague. They told me that they accept my insurance, so I was excited to find a dentist close to my house. When I arrived for my first appointment, I had to wait a long time, but whatever, it's the dentist, right? Turns out the reason I had to wait was because the hygienist was late. Again, not the biggest deal, but there were clearly some uncomfortable office politics going on and I felt stuck in the middle. The cleaning and service seemed competent. When my feelings really began to sour was when the financial consultant came in after they had taken x-rays and done a cleaning, to tell me that my insurance doesn't cover some of what they did and that I would have to pay $87 for the services. This doesn't break the bank or anything, but the services I received should have been free given my insurance and this was a pretty lame time to tell me. I needed additional work, which should have also been free (if they were an in-network insurance provider), but they told me that it would cost over $200 because of the insurance issue. So, I left with a bad taste in my mouth (no pun intended) and knew I would need to find a new dentist. Today, I found another dentist, who asked me to have my dental records transferred. So, I call CPW Dental Studio and first they tell me that they do take my insurance and try to get me back (while they do take it, it only covers about half of what they charge and I have to pay the rest). I asked to have my dental records transferred and they said they could do that but that there was a $35 transfer fee. Now, mind you, all my records, including x-rays, were electronic and they had already been paid for these from my first visit, so I thought this was really pretty uncool. Bottom line: I felt that they were greedy and I wouldn't trust them. I wasn't very inspired by the competence of the staff, though the dentist seemed professional and the financial manager certainly has his finger on the pulse. They should tell you if they are an out-of-network provider and not just say that they accept your insurance. read more

I've been with this dental place for a few years. They do good work and the staff is professional. The reason I've stopped going to them is because of the overcharges and "missing" paid services receipts. I've caught them twice trying to charge me for services that were unnecessary. This money doesn't come out of my pocket but it does come from the insurance company and increases our health care deficit. Such as repeat X-rays when I had a set a week earlier, unnecessary dental exam "fee" when I didn't request that and came for a molding. Missing records for things I've paid and they wanted me to pay again. That was the third strike. This place is untrustworthy and I believe is my duty to let others know. read more

I went here over a year ago when I didn't have insurance and they had a Groupon deal (probably should have been my first red flag) for clearning and X-rays. Dr. Fernandes told me that I had 4 cavities and INSISTED that I needed to get them filled ASAP. And that each of them would cost me $400. I got one filling on "the worst" one and told them I couldn't afford the rest. They called me constantly for months to schedule the rest of my fillings, and only stopped calling because I told them I moved away. A year later and insured, I went to my hometown dentist, expecting to hear that I had 3 cavities, and instead was told that my teeth were fine. Makes me wonder if the "worst" cavity was even real. A-ma-zing. I started off my day with the ultimate pain in my wisdom tooth, then the added trauma pf having to fond a new dentist. Was connected to Central Park West dental, and I am so happy that I was. Ms. Flo, the receptionist was über courteous and informative. The tech Laura was super sweet and east going. My dentist explained everything that was going on, what she wanted to do, then asked. I left, without pain, not broke, and with a new Dentist. I recommend them to anyone. The assitant was unprofessional, distracted and had terrible grammar (I'm not a snob, I normally wouldn't mind except I had a terrible time waiting there). Then the dentist came in 2 hours and change since I arrived, she didn't acknoweldge me for a good ... 2 or 3 mins. She didn't tell me anything about my teeth health, I had to find out on my way out from the guy at the front desk, who was alittle pushy- perfectly nice..but pushy. Everyone I dealt with was very pleasant, but that's the best I can say. (I think this operation is largely run by folks you don't meet and that they nice people you interact with are not responsible for the policies.) I contacted because they were supposedly covered by my insurance. I wanted a deep cleaning -- and I wanted to do it before my Flex funds expired . After telling me that they could do that, they tried to change the arrangement, but I pushed back. I'm sorry I did because I found their business practices shady and the work they did was not good. (1) When I arrived to sign in, they gave me a bunch of papers, with a lot of duplication, to sign. One of the papers was an application for a dental credit card, which I certainly did not want. I'm sure lots of people sign them because they're in the pile of papers. I should have walked out then. (2) They told me that my insurance would pay for only half of my mouth (false) and then that it would cost almost $1000 for the other half. I should have realized that this was highly unlikely, but I didn't. Actually, legit dentists charge less than 1/2 of that for a full deep cleaning. (I will be following up on this -- I hate being overcharged.) (3) The cleaning was not good. You know how your mouth feels great the day after a dental cleaning? Not here. The on staff oral surgeon, Dr. Smith has the worst bedside manner ever. It is in fact completely non-existant. He clearly didn't even bother to look at my chart because he came in not knowing my name or what procedure I was there for, or if he'd even seen me before. He was checking emails on his phone the entire time he was explaining the procedure and after care instructions to me. During the actual surgery he showed no regard for my pain or discomfort. The novocain shot caused me so much pain that I actually cried, and he paid no notice and in fact left me there in tears while he went to deal with another patient. He was clearly trying to cram too many patients into one day, because I had to wait for almost an hour. I felt like I was part of an assembly line, not a valued patient. Everyone here was so patient and accommodating. They made me feel comfortable despite my fears. Even when taking xrays I can be a pain and the assistant put me at ease. I also got a full explanation of what was recommended which was very informative. Dr. Ferrara also was very sympathetic regarding my situation about avoiding gum disease. Office cleanliness: 5 stars Receptionist: friendly - 5 stars Whitening procedure - 2.5-3 stars Wait time - 2-3 stars Recommend to a friend? Not the whitening service but maybe they are good for a cleaning or another procedure. I purchased a Groupon for Zoom whitening. I guess a lot of other people bought it too because nothing was available for several months. Anyway, when I finally got my appointment, I checked in at the receptionists' desk and the staff was very friendly and professional. I had to wait about thirty minutes to be seen. When I got in the chair, Dr. Genevieve Fernandes introduced herself. She was very friendly as well. I only saw her during the introduction though because she had an assistant perform the Zoom Whitening procedure. The assistant was overall nice, but was a little gruff in her tone and choice of words at times telling me, "Don't do this" and "Don't do that" or "See, it's messed up now because you did that." Very annoying to have a 20 something year old scold me. I'm certain that she could have found a nicer way to communicate proper procedures to me. When the Zoom whitening process was over, I was not happy with the appearance of my teeth. They were a tad bit whiter, but it was not enough to justify the cost. The assistant claimed that my teeth were already near the perfect shade of white so therefore that's why I didn't see much of a difference. Um, no that was not the case at all. Try again. Please be aware that they will only whiten the front of your teeth and not the sides. As they say, "You get what you pay for." Next time, I would probably pay more money to get brighter teeth in the end. I think it would be worth the extra cost. I am giving them three stars to give them the benefit of the doubt that they may do a better job performing other services than this one. read more

I was not impressed with this dentist. They recommended thousands of dollars of work that upon getting a second opinion I learned was not necessary. When I tried to cancel my appointment 24 hours in advance, (which their business card says is the policy), they insisted that it was a 48 hour cancellation policy and they were going to charge me. The people were very nice on my initial visit, but it was not one of the most comfortable dentist experiences I have ever had, and at best they weren't very sensitive to my financial situation. Everyone at this practice is extremely friendly, but the oral surgeon on staff has the worst bedside manner I've ever encountered. It's common for people to be scared of the dentist (especially when they're getting surgery) and he was completely insensitive, brash and flat out rude to me. I was crying and shaking before the procedure and he acted like I was inconveniencing him. He never apologized for seeing me AN HOUR LATE after my scheduled appointment. I'm so thankful that nurse Carolyn was there and so sweet to me. She held my hand, put on Beyoncé for me and even made me laugh. If I hadn't paid already, I would've gone elsewhere. He came in not knowing my name or the procedure he was performing and misspelled my name while filling my prescription (even though my chart was right in front of him) and I had to try and spell it for him several times while my mouth was numb. He was also extremely rude to the nurse, so I guess that's just how he operates. I wish I trusted the reviews I read about him and went elsewhere. Everyone else at the practice is great--especially the office coordinator who has personally called/texted me to make sure I'm healing ok, but I think anyone considering getting surgery here deserves a heads up for what's to be expected with Dr. Smith. Initially, I wasn't going to complain. But I was so upset by the way I was treated, I felt that other people deserve to know what's to be expected before they make the decision to come here for oral surgery. read more

THEY STOLE MY DAUGHTERS GOLD CROWN!!!!!!!!!!!! this dental practice is so motivated by the bottom line that they went as far as stealing my daughters crown during a surgical procedure. The Surgeon Dr. Stanley Smith who freeelances at this practice but is originally from the veterans hospital is incompetant and brash. he removed a molar from my daughters mouth and took the crown off a neighboring tooth. he left the tooth with the crown exposed and between him and the staff in this office STOLE THE CROWN and proceded to act as if nothing had happened. He went as far as not telling me the parent that he had to remove the crown in order to complete the procedure, left her tooth exposed and did not even bother to set up a follow up appointment to address the missing crown. when I went to ask questions I was given a lot of excuses and no solution. They even changed the medical record to reflect that they handed the crown to my daughter a minor when I was sitting right there!!! They told me I was going to get a free consultation for a compensation of this loss and when the day of the appointment came the secretary calls me to tell the insurance refused to cover the appointment I responded "you said it was going to be free" I called my INS and found out that they were charging me twice at every visit they would take the payment from the INS then charge me the same amount which I had to pay in cash or credit. The Dentist at this practice are not very skilled in there craft. Dr. Shirley worked on my tooth for a routine bonding and the bonding was so thick that the tooth felt weighed down. I complained and another dentist at this practice told me that she couldn't repair because thats too much drilling on the tooth so now I have to live with this uncomfortable tooth because of the incompentance at this Dental practice. I'll never recommend anyone to this practice its is horrible and deserves a (negative) -5 stars read more

Just returned from my first visit to Central Park Dental. Found everyone very friendly and accommodating. I had not been to the dentist in awhile and, as suspected, needed work done. I was working under a tight schedule with the holidays and they were able to squeeze me in between appointments to get the work done. The dentist and the hygienists were all very knowledgeable and together we discussed a treatment plan that met the needs of my insurance plan and my wallet. Good dentistry is hard to come by. I would definitely recommend Central Park Dental & Assoc. And with reference to the first reviewer, my comment is 'you get what you pay for'. read more
