I've been here a few times before but somehow hasn't ever reviewed this gem of riverwest. Everything is SO. GOOD. We had the goat cheese and gnocchi as apps for a table of 4 and each ordered a pasta dish and we each brought half our food home because portion sizes are so generous. Service was attentive and quick and we were not pressured at all even though we basically were the last people on the restaurant well past close. It's truly delicious, simple but elegant Italian in such a perfect cozy but cool environment. LOVE it here! read more

If you are looking for a restaurant with an amazing atmosphere for a romantic date, then this place delivers. The food is above average Italian. The gnocchi appetizer with duck bacon in a brown butter sauce was delicious. The bread they give out was warm and had huge nooks and crannies. Our entrees could have been better, perhaps salt the pasta water. Also, at these prices a parmesan cheese shaker is kind of a downer, give me a dish of parmesan or fresh grate the cheese. We ordered takeout for NYE and YUM! We've gone to Centro pre-COVID for pizza and loved it. During COVID, we were craving pasta and Centro was the perfect choice. I got the butternut squash ravioli (heavenly) and my husband got the spaghetti bolognese (delicious). They recently started offering delivery through Eat Street- which adds on quite a bit of $$. They are taking great precautions here during Covid. Food is delicious. I had the Pollo. Back in the day they used to have Cavatappi pasta versus Fettuccine that is in the dish now. My preference is the Cavatappi but it is still a yummy dish:). Ceasar salad delish as always. We sat on their back patio with very well spaced tables during Covid. The server was hustling. Not only is he serving but he is making the drinks as well. My hats go off to the server:) I hope these guys can make it this coming winter with Covid! I love these guys! We had a pretty awful experience here. We made a reservation for 6 people and showed up five minutes late, only to find that they had given our table for 6 to the couple right ahead of us. The hostess was extremely rude and when we asked if they could seat us anywhere she said "no probably not" and then we left. We went over to the bar area next door and then got a call that they actually could seat us, so they moved the couple to another table. What followed was 15 minutes before we were even acknowledged by anyone. The server was friendly and then the rest of the time was not, and we couldn't really understand why. I got shrimp scampi and it was the worst I've ever had. Tasted like noodles in oil with shrimp and no flavor. Pricey too. Other dishes were much better. read more

Great little place for Italian in MKE! Came here for a big birthday celebration on a Saturday night and had an amazing time! We started with cocktails, I had the Loren which I highly recommend. My entree was also delicious, I ordered the lobster alfredo. It was lighter than I expected, which was perfect because I had a long night of celebrations ahead! HOLY FREAKING COW. I had never heard of Centro until I saw the coaster in my City Tin. My friend and I came here for dinner tonight and I already can't wait to go back. It is a quiet quaint spot on the east side. It looks unassuming from the outside but it is a warm and inviting environment inside. Our service was outstanding (her name was Bridget) and extremely knowledgeable. I ordered a cosmopolitan from the bar and it was one of the best I've ever had- which is saying a lot! Then I had the Caesar salad. I ordered the small portion and still had leftovers to take home! For my main dish, I had the bolognese. It was DIVINE. Wow. Delicious, fresh, inspired. My friend and I came here on a Thursday night around 7:00. We were visiting from Madison and it was my first time at Centro. There were only three other diners, which baffled us. Exterior is welcoming with cafe tables and hanging flowers adorning the entrance. Inside is dark and cozy- perfect for a date night. The pendant lights over the table were a little harsh and there were no candles on the table. The kitchen is on the right bordered by a high top chef's table. Our server was wonderful- she knew the menu like the back of her hand and when asked for her favorites and recommendations, did not disappoint. I started with the drink special of the day- a mezcal martini. I'm a big mezcal fan and loved how the smokiness paired with botanicals of the gin. This should be on the menu full-time. My friend enjoyed the prosecco. We enjoyed the goat cheese starter- the cheese was deliciously salty and creamy. We asked our sever for her recommendations and they did not disappoint. She informed us everything can be made to order and substitutions would be no problem (I'm a vegetarian so this was well-received). My friend ordered the arancia with the vegetarian meatballs. It was basic marinara and pasta- but spicy and fresh. The veg meatballs were full of spices - coriander definitely prominent. I ordered the verse risotto which was a new additions to the menu. Oh.My.Goodness. It was AMAZING. The earthiness and umami is the mushrooms and the saltiness of the cheese was perfection. I'm not always a huge mushroom fan because of texture, but these mushrooms were cooked just perfectly that they weren't rubbery at all. The server also recommended the Barbera red to pair with the dish. We were perfectly satiated with about half of our mains to take with us. My husband and I loved this place. The host was super attentive and kept random people from killing the vibe with asking for money. (We had a window seat) Our waitress was awesome. She was knowledgeable about the menu and extremely personable. I loved that you could see the kitchen! I had the prima Vera and loved it. I should've asked for shaved Parmesan on top but it was still very good without it. My husband had the vegan gnocchi and loved it. Our friends ordered the bolognese and both thought it was amazing. We finished the night with the flourless chocolate cake with raspberry sorbet. Perfect ending to a phenomenal meal. This was an epic date night spot and they had live jazz next door. I've been twice now, and I'd like to touch on a few things. Food: I've only tried the diavolo pasta, and it is AMAZING. So good that I had to get it the second time around as well. Very flavorful. My friend had the gnocchi which was also amazing. I've had gnocchi one other time and hated it and swore off it, but after trying the gnocchi at Centro Cafe, I am more optimistic about eating gnocchi. In short, the food is great. Atmosphere: The environment is very relaxing and exciting. It wasn't too bright or too dark. Not too loud or too quiet. And the owner was very friendly when greeting us. Drinks: This probably isnt even necessary, but I'll still touch on it. Because I'm only 20, I'm unable to drink, so I order "mocktails" instead. With a few descriptions of the kind of mocktail I'd like, Centro Cafe got it right and gave me the perfect mocktail. I couldn't get enough of it. This was my first time here, and I loved it! Everything we had to eat was delicious. The service was excellent and our waitress gave us many recommendations. It is a hidden gem. You are able to see the chefs cooking from almost any table in the restaurant. The vibe is very laid back with extra details like flower garnishes and candles at the tables. I love Centro Cafe! One thing that you have to appreciate about Milwaukee is that so many restaurants are so unassuming and cozy. Centro Cafe is not an exception. Tucked away in River West - it is such an amazing spot. The food is top-notch and the service measures up. For an appetizer, I recommend the bruschetta and my favorite entree is the Giardiniera pasta. The team is always educated on the perfect drink pairing or glass of wine. I've had business dinners, friend get-togethers and normal weeknight dining here and each time I've been more than satisfied. Centro Café deserves a long overdue update. I'm sorry it took me so long, Centro. See, back in the day, I wasn't so sure about you. Your food was fine... but nothing to write home about. Your staff was attentive, but between your über-small space itself and my lackluster experiences I, well... I just wasn't sold. (If you read my previous review you'll see that I really wanted to be sold. In fact, I wanted nothing more than to be sold, but I just wasn't, and well... you gotta keep it real, Yelp Milwaukee.) So now I update, because I can now say with absolute certainty, clarity, and wholeheartedness that Centro has won me over. I'm really a fan. It's been awhile since Centro's turned the corner, both on the ground and for me, personally. Like I said... better late than never, right? Firstly, they've expanded the space into the upstairs area and added a bar where folks looking to snag a table can sit and enjoy a drink or two while they wait. You can also dine at the bar (that's my style, y'all). The wine list is nice. The drink list is nice. I wish they had a bit more in the way of craft beer options (L's a big beer guy and digs the craft brews), but whatever. They've got a few and some local options, to boot. The fare? Stepped up a notch, as far as I can tell. The menu's more extensive and features offerings more sophisticated than previously. The Gnudi = housemade ricotta gnocchi/spinach/truffle oil, wild mushrooms pancetta? I die. So rich yet so damn good. The Salsiccia pasta is delightful too... and the rocket salad? Gimme dat. Gluten-free options for those looking to defeat the wheat? You're covered, celiacs. Choose your own adventure and add almost anything to your pasta or salad? They're into it, which is a refreshing change from the "no substitution" culture of other spots. (Which, btw, I completely understand in certain circumstances for various reasons. Solid four stars. Been hearing about Centro for some time and finally made it there yesterday. Really cute space. Three dining areas (front, back and a covered outside space). Menu was good and several specials on the board. We went with baked goat cheese and that was rock star good. Wifey had the meatballs and not only tasty but omg what a huge portion. I had the salmon special. Perfectly cooked over a mushroom risotto. Perfection. While mine was also huge, apparently I am a pig and ate all of mine. So far my favorite Italian in Milwaukee. Great experience!! I have been here twice and both times were amazing! Centro is a super cute Italian restaurant with a great ambiance and delicious food. I ordered a small rocket salad and it was much larger than expected so you could definitely split a small with another person. It was dressed perfectly making it a light salad before my meal. Bread is free so if they don't give it to you just ask! You can dip it in oil and balsamic. Next came my entree, the scampi. The shrimp were so big! It was light and delicious, I was on a detox so I ordered this because it fit my diet well but I am more of a creamy sauce girl. My friend ordered the bolognese, which smelled and looked so good and she loved it! This restaurant has a romantic vibe especially in their front room so it a great spot for date night! I had a city tin for this place and had seen it on the street next to some other favorite spots so decided to check it out for dinner. Great space inside and I really liked the unique ambience of the entry section vs the upstairs vs the outdoor patio (actually my fav and will ask to sit there next time). Started with the baked goat cheese which was superb. Creamy warm gooey spread for some crostini that were better than most with that rustic Italian bread flavor. Bowl was right sized for appetizer but I could make that my meal for one with a salad. I ordered the bison and pork meatballs with spaghetti. One word - outstanding. Superb flavor and balance of gamey meat with tender pig. Cream sauce and red wine reduction were perfect blend for richness and depth of flavor. Pasta was cooked PERFECT. Nice job making it al dente with no error. Bowl came with two large meatballs and more than enough spaghetti for a hungry boy. I ate what I could so lunch leftovers traveled home with me. Price point doesn't match food quality. I had such high hopes for this restaurant and was kind of let down. 1. $17 for scampi? A bit too much when the first bite I took just tasted like plain noodles. The flavors were very muted and my dish had barely any sauce. My boyfriend had the pasta special (Southwest) and same thing, very bland and muted. Got the tiramisu as dessert... not my favorite when it's 90% cream and 10% lady fingers. We sat in the back patio which the hostess said "had a great view"... so our grown weeds, alleyway and a bunch of black garbage bags? Our server was nice but a bit off. She told us to keep our appetizer plates when we had them stacked instead of just grabbing new ones. We waited a good 20 mins for our drinks and she messed up our order a few times. We love Centro Cafe. The only gripe I have is the space between tables. It makes it real cozy on date night, but the food and service is always amazing. This time we went on a Friday evening and it was busy, but there was a table for us right away. We were seated and ordered some drinks and ate their side of bread. The bread is perfect because it can also be dipped with their baked goat cheese appetizer. The baked goat cheese with the candied tomato jam is so warm and delicious. It comes with crostini, but our server brought us more soft bread upon request and the soft bread absorbed the goat cheese nicely. For entrees, we ordered scallops on a risotto with mushrooms and beggar's linguini, which had dried cherries, raisins, pancetta, and shallots on a brown butter sauce. Both were cooked perfectly and the presentation was beautiful. The mushrooms with the scallops were so meaty and rich - yum! For dessert we shared a cookie with ice cream. The cookie was soft and the ice cream tasted home made, though I'm not sure if it was. I cannot recommend Centro Cafe enough for a girls night or a date night. The *only* downside to dining at Centro is they don't take reservations. I am a planner, so my peace of mind prefers them. But it's well worth the wait once you do get settled. The food is absolutely fantastic. Their pasta dishes are phenomenal and they offer a wonderful gluten-free option. It's almost like real pasta how tender and full filling it is. The Caesar is my favorite out of their salads; the lettuce is always crisp and light and it's perfectly dressed and garnished. I also love their seafood risotto. Creamy is in the name, but it's not overpoweringly savory. It's a well balanced dish in terms of flavor and it's probably my favorite thing on the menu. The ambiance of the restaurant itself is very open. It's a community style layout with tables closer together so you can converse with your neighboring diners is desired, but still enough room between tables for privacy on date night. You can also see the chefs cook your food with the kitchen right on the other side of the bar top. It's a very thoughtful setup and our go-to place when craving Italian. read more

It's an awesome date spot, a fantastic "I want some bruschetta and a drink" spot, a great my friend is visiting from out of town spot. You should just come here for whatever occasion, I guarantee you won't be disappointed. 2. Their cocktails are phenomenal. I ordered their Negronis, and tried the Guilietta and Yellow Rose. On a recent Saturday night, my dining companion are I decided to order four dishes to share. We started with the scallops for an appetizer. The sear was perfect and the mouth party ignited. Next, we enjoyed the salad off of the "Specials" menu. With a black sesame seed dressing, it delivered with a satisfying texture and taste. The house specialty of gnudi was up next. At first glance, we were rather baffled. These were the dumplings we had ordered?! It looked more like a spinach salad with some bits of fried noodles on top. But, wow. The explosive flavor of the ricotta based "dumplings" and truffle oil knocked my socks off. To top it off, we ordered the spinach and mushroom pizza with an Alfredo sauce to go. We were pretty excited about our nice sized box, but the pizza was WAY smaller than the box once we lifted the lid at home. A 10" pizza is small, people. But the taste continued to impress. Delish. Our server, Terry, was very knowledgeable and attentive. The dishes came out slowly due to a private party in their next door space. It wasn't a problem for us because we weren't in a hurry, but others might prefer a faster experience. Finally, just a friendly reminder that some of us are extra sensitive to perfumes. It's a pet peeve of mine when servers/waitstaff wear heavy scents. Someone's perfume was overpowering, and I'd much prefer to enjoy the amazing aromas wafting from the open kitchen. Just a wonderful little Cafe, I had the chance to stop by here with my family and have a fantastic meal. Tucked into River West, you could easily pass this place if you blink too long. About 10 tables are tucked against the walls, the lighting is dim, the decor is minimalist, but the food? Fantastic. We started with the calamari plate...it was perfectly cooked, served on a beautiful salad with oil and lemon juice. It wasnt heavily salted, which on one hand, I admired the full flavors of the seafood, on the other, it could have used a pinch of sea salt. The pastas are really fantastic. I got to try a bunch, but my Penne y Tonno was outstanding...i'm pretty sure they used fresh Tuna! As well, the prices are out of this world. I've lived in Milwaukee for a couple of years and I'm embarrassed to say that my first time here was last Thursday. The atmosphere is cozy and cute (perfect for date night) but better yet, the food is amazing. I wouldn't consider myself a huge fan of Italian food, but good food is good food. I had the house specialty Gnudi which was fresh, and savory. We didn't anticipate trying dessert, but our server sold us on the vanilla bourbon gelato with espresso (intended to be like a root beer float) it did not disappoint. I accidentally typed 808 W Center street and ended up near one of those shady for profit church establishments wondering how in hell anyone gives this place a decent review. We looked around and after getting some heebie jeebies we determined this was a wrong address. It's supposed to be EAST not West !!! After we finally figured where we needed to go and got there, we found ourselves in a hipsterish neighborhood with snazzy dining venues. Had a bit of a predicament, because Centro does not take reservations and they were quite full. We only had an hour of time to spare. The hostess was super awesome. We told her we were tight on time and she worked her magic to find us a spot rather quickly. The restaurant is modern, cozy with many feminine touches. The art work and was all about women, the staff was mostly female and the food was just how mom would make it. Very light and with gluten free options! I ordered grilled calamari with scallops which was fantastic and perfectly prepared. Also enjoyed the slightly toasted bruschetta. Unfortunately didn't get to dessert because we had to scurry, but I did enjoy a quick and amazing cocktail. Quaint place with excellent service. The scallop appetizer was recommended and absolutely amazing but very overpriced ... $16 for four scallops. The meatballs were uneventful and I would not feed those to my dog. My friend thoroughly enjoyed her risotto but neither of us had any clams in the shells in our meals. I believe that Centro is one of the best restaurants in Milwaukee. For me, it's right up there with Odd Duck and La Merenda. When you walk into Centro, it feels sophisticated but in a warm and welcoming way. The main dining area is made up of small two and four top tables. If possible, I would recommend sitting at the kitchen bar in this dining area. The chef is extremely friendly and knowledgeable about menu items. It is also so neat to be able to sit there and watch her cook everything -- Drooling just thinking about it! If however, you do not like the lighting and brightness of the front dining area, there is also a wooded/heated/closed in "deck" attached to the back of the restaurant which is equally as cozy as the front. That being said once it is time for you to order, you will not be disappointed in anything you get! I believe the prices at Centro are very fair. Most of the entrees are between $15 - $21. For the $15 price range, you can order from a large variety of excellent pasta dishes with bolognese or sausage and delicious vodka sauces or marinara sauces. When you hit the $21 entrees, those usually include a larger piece of meat with them (i.e. short ribs, duck, seafood). Either way, for the portions you get and the lovely atmosphere -- This place in my opinion, is very affordable. In my opinion, the must haves at Centro are the prosciutto wrapped asparagus, the goat cheese appetizer and the short rib with gnocchi. These things are not to be missed! So SOMEONE at your table must try at least one of these, I promise you will not be disappointed. read more

Centro Cafe is amazing. If you want a river west experience this is a great pick. If you pick right it's not too pricey but could also be a great girls night or date location. The pasta is amazing - whichever you choose and a not too small or large portion size. The pizza is smaller so good for 1 or as an appetizer. The duck sausage everyone seems to like but I've been happy with the seafood options. Their garlic bread is incredible and most of the menu can be made gluten-free. For non gf eaters don't worry they have the gluten filled goodness. They bring fresh baked bread with Parmesan, oil and vinegar too. Crushed pepper upon request. Their drinks are great. The wine selection never really changes but it's high quality and the drinks are good. After Rustico closed down this is our new Italian staple in contrast to Onesto. I have not been to onesto but We weren't impressed with the new brady street Italian restaurant. There's a brewery across the street with live music (cover) a lot of the time as well as the foundation tiki bar around the corner that has solid non sugary, really booze, tiki drinks (the fish bowl will obv be sugary). read more
