I am extremely familiar with the research on mold remediation, and pasteurization is never mentioned (except in a negative sense as in - don't do it!!!). I have attended several Shoemaker conferences where health practitioners, mold remediators, patients, etc. come together to share most recent advances in the field. I attend the annual online mold summit as well. The only consensus is that physically removing mold is the only way to deal with it. If you stress toxigenic mold via pasteurization, spraying, diffusing oils, etc. it will defend itself by producing mycotoxins. Mold forms colonies that communicate. Some mold sense when they are drying out and start ejecting mold spores into the air. Viable mold spores are only a small part of what's released by mold that causes an inflammatory response. This is why air testing is generally considered unreliable by doctors that treat mold illness. Dust tests (ERMI) tests are used instead. This testing is also fraught with issues, but in my experience having both air (one point in time) and dust tests (dust collected over 30 days minimum) give a more complete picture of air quality. Both tests only check for viable spores so they're quite limited. Best is to use mycotoxin tests, but they're in the 5k range. Air tests are most reliable when home is kept closed up for 24 hours, but few testers tell you to do so. To claim that pasteurization works against mold because of un-cited white papers is plain false. Aflatoxin (the toxin excreted by aspergillus) is stable up to 360F. The main tenets of remediation are to prevent the spread of contamination, and to physically remove it. There are a dozen or so groups on Facebook on mold illness. They range to about 10-20k members. Many of the members are well known practitioners. Do a search on "pasteurization" in these groups. See if there are any folks who got better after this or any practitioners who endorse this. I guarantee you there are NONE. What you're going to find is quite the opposite. Many folks sensitive to mold attest that their homes felt much worse after pasteurization. This is not a surprise. Mold when attacked gets angry and produces mycotoxins that get us sick. I posted the report from Certified Environmental in most of these groups for an opinion when I was green in this area. I had a slew of professionals comment and warn me against pasteurization. One included a 2-page critique of the report with references on the problems of pasteurization. Most were appalled that the report barely mentioned gross remediation which is industry standard. To address Rich's comments: doing something for a long time doesn't mean that it's being done right. Most mold testers don't test correctly based on experts on this field. That remediation companies also offer testing services doesn't constitute a conflict of interest unless customer is naive enough to allow remediator to perform his own clearance testing. No one really is this naive, and third party testing is standard in the biz. Remediators only get paid once third party testing clears the property. The markup for air testing is insane so many companies who remediate test on their own as they clean up to make sure that third party testing will clear the property and they'll get paid. They usually don't show these tests to the customer - they're simply for their own use to check on their work. This way, customer doesn't have to pay $1000 repeatedly for 3rd party testing until property clears. To brush off gross remediation and instead push hard pasteurization implies either financial ties with pasteurization company, or lack of understanding of mold. Speaking personally to this pasteurization company recommended by Rich when I was truly interested to learn whether and how it worked, I was fed the same line "we do this all the time" or many "white papers published". No references that I could check on were ever offered. The person who showed up at the house knew a pitiful amount about mold. Luckily I did my own research on this. I'm begging you Rich to look deeper into this instead of getting defensive. I know what hell mold illness is. Recommending pasteurization is putting lives at risk. This is not just me saying it - it's the consensus of the whole mold community. read more

When I first called to get some help determining the cause of my mold issue, Rich spoke at length with me on the phone to answer my questions before scheduling an appointment. He was very helpful and not a pushy salesman. I could tell he had been in the business for a long time and was very knowledgeable. One of his staff, Michael, arrived on time a few days later and did an excellent job reviewing the area, testing for moisture in the walls and taking the necessary air samples. This company is great! We had a possible mold issue with our home and couldn't stay in it. We called them, and despite it being his day off, Richard (the owner) came out the same day and did testing. He was so compassionate and VERY experienced. He has been doing this for many, many years. The tests all came back negative for excessive mold. Well... we STILL were having respiratory problems after massive cleaning etc. He came out a second time to do a different type of testing. Once again, all came back negative. I called Rich on short notice to inspect our home in Pebble Beach after a vacation renter was complaining of allergies he said that was due to mold in the home. Richard Gray may have saved our lives and my home business. We had a water intrusion at our 3 bedroom, Redwood City apartment a few months ago.
