Alex and the CH&L team were absolutely incredible to work with. This review is long overdue but in Sept 2018 our house in Walnut Creek burned down. Fast forward two years later Sept 2020 once the rebuild was near completion, we decided to gut the backyard and make some improvements to the front yard before moving back in. After getting 5-6 bids we met with Alex a few times and it immediately became clear this was our guy. Not only were his costs competitive, he was a one stop shop for everything we wanted to do - concrete, turf, outdoor kitchen, irrigation, landscaping, lighting, etc. You dream it, he and his crew can do it. After communicating our ideas and nailing down the specifics of what exactly we wanted, Alex involved us every step of the way i.e. color/pattern of the stamped concrete down to the plant varieties in the front/backyard. We also appreciated the work ethic of the entire crew. It was not unusual for his guys to work 12 hour days and the laundry list of items they were tasked with were completed in full (front and backyard) within about 4 weeks. While our contractor working on the house was taking their sweet time, CH&L were arriving before them and leaving after them on a daily basis. Lastly, if something wasn't quite right or needed to be fixed or adjusted Alex made it right. Even up to a year after the job was finished, he or his guys would come back out as needed to ensure everything was looking and working as it should and that we were completely satisfied with the finished product. Honest work to say the least. Since our job wrapped up, I've referred Alex to a few friends and they've gone on to do projects with him (some much larger than ours). They have referred their friends/neighbors. His work speaks for itself. The 2 most recent were to add height to a current wall (done last October) and then a fence separating our garden from the rest of the yard (just finished up). Alex is excellent to work with! Very happy with this company and their finish product. Muneer was the star of the show here. He put in the time to make it a well informed, calm and thoughtful process. Attention to detail is supreme and corners were not cut. A couple issues came up during demo but he was able to pivot with some smart options to help keep costs down while maintaining high quality. I had the team at CH & L build approximately 150 feet of reinforced concrete retaining wall, build two sets of stairs, and install new "good neighbor" fencing along two sides of my property in Vallejo in November/December 2023. The finished product looks SO GOOD and feels like it will stand for decades. From start to finish, everyone I interacted with at CH & L was professional, helpful, and provided outstanding service. Start to finish the project took less than 3 weeks and came in on budget and under time. The owner Alex came out to the site multiple times to check in with me and the crew, and the foreman Jose was a genuine pleasure to work with on a daily basis. Even though I was off-site for a lot of the time, Jose, Alex, and Muneer stayed in frequent contact via text or phone. The crew was always prompt, professional, did exceptionally high quality of work, and cleaned everything spotless before wrapping up the job (no small task given the mud they were working in!). Additionally, Jose went above and beyond helping me plan out "next stages" in my landscaping including reviewing materials choices, sketching out designs, sorting logistics, and how to break things into affordable pieces for my budget. I will 100% work with them again for all of my landscaping projects! After spending an agonizing 8 months last year working with another large Bay Area contractor on another huge outdoor project where every turn was an expensive disappointment, CH & L is a breath of fresh air. I had retaining walls for terraces, stairs and a new fence built by them. They seemed like a good balance of cost and quality when I hired them, but the work and communication was pretty bad. In the beginning it seemed great, the excavation went quickly and they were respectful of the property. However as time went on they did things differently than we discussed, didn't keep an eye on employees or didn't relay information to them, they brought in rocky garbage filled clay for my gardening areas, built a really shoddily made fence, crooked stairs, not as many stairs as the invoice stated or that we discussed (they eventually agreed to finish the stairs but overall it's still a bad job especially for the price), cracks in the concrete walls before they were even done with the job, ruined part of my front yard, and the slope for the terraces and next to the stairs is higher than we talked about. They also weakened my existing retaining wall. The walls: I chose them because I wanted concrete with sides. They didn't make any sides and were just going to let my soil spill out into neighbors yards, that was the first big miscommunication. I had to pay extra for pressure treated sides which they only built a couple feet back. There were a couple cracks within a week or so of pouring the walls, after a few months 40 cracks. I do like the wood grain finish. They measured the wall wrong before pouring which made the stairs crooked. In the beginning they said dirt had to be on top of the footing for stability, but they exposed the footing on the lower wall, and the higher wall isn't covered much except by the giant stair hills. The stairs: We talked many times before they started about what type of stairs and how they'd be made. They were supposed to have 2 pieces of pressure treated wood in the sides and one for the riser, those would be stacked on top of each other. Nope, no sides. They made a massive mound of dirt to put the stairs on, which makes a slidy hill to walk down to get down to the terraces. They ended the stairs in what would be a landslide in winter, in top of extra dirt they put there it was a 9' drop for 8-9' to the fence. After telling them about the crappy job they did everywhere including the invoice having 1/3 more stairs on it than what I received they came back and did a crap job finishing it up. The gravel is spilling out the sides, besides the stairs to walls being crooked, some stairs lean down, some are crooked in relation to the next one, they didn't fill in areas where they had rebar that they removed, so there are holes in the gravel every step that I had to fill in. They left big channels next to the lower stairs that I'm going to have to fix before the rains come. Keep in mind that the first part of the conversation was that I'm on landslide zone and stability is crucial to the project. The corners also broke off right away, and there are some splits in the new stairs from the rebar. It seems like they used very cheap wood for that. The fence: it's so bad ..my 60 year old fence was so much stronger than what they made. I haven't left my dog in the yard while I'm out of the house since they made it...The spreader bars are bent, they said it was because the new material wasn't as strong as the old material (yeah, I noticed that too). For some reason one of the top bars is at the top of the fence for a couple spans, then they attached it 8" lower? Also another top bar was cut too long so they just attached it in front of the vertical bar instead of at the top of it. Lots of the spreader bars aren't connected through their holes at the top and bottom. The chain link is uneven at the top of the fence in many places. They left a big hole at the base of a fence. They said they'd bury the fence 6" below ground on both sides but didn't do that. It's exposed on the outer side so I'm going to have to go down there and fix it before coyotes dig in or my dog digs out. It's already spilling dirt out a lot and I keep filling it up. One of the gates is in the wrong location, I confirmed many times that it would be on the side, but they put it on the bottom part of the fence then told me to not go down there because it was too dangerous. The fill soil: I told Alex I'd be using it for gardening and wanted good soil. He said yeah, it would be good dirt. They brought clay filled with garbage and rocks...so many rocks.. like more than half. I contacted the project manager before they brought the dirt trying to confirm that it would be good quality for gardening, he said Alex would come talk to me about it. He didn't come until a week later, meanwhile 3 loads had been dumped here. They said they'd clean it. Which they sort of did, one team of workers did while they were bringing it to the back, but the other workers who did most of the dirt bringing just brought all that crap to my backyard. I'm on the edge of parkland, so they were throwing the rocks outside the fence. They're awful. Do not hire read more

Over the last two years Alex, Muneer, and the rest of their team have helped us completely rework our backyard. They have replaced an old poorly designed and rotted deck, removed, reorganized and re-layed pavers, built and installed a pergola, restained our fences, and helped us source a tree for the yard. They also helped us redo our grass which included adding a simple sprinkler system. The workers are always on time and very respectful of our space. Alex and his team recently completed a backyard renovation after I had an old pool demolished. I could not be happier with the results and the process. I went to multiple vendors, and Alex provided a very reasonable quote - he was willing to work within my budget and offered multiple options for what to do with the space. After we had locked down a plan, we had to wait for the pool to be demolished. There was a slight wrinkle though, as we had to delay the start date due to a city inspection. When I told Alex about this, he was very accommodating, and did not give me any hint of negativity. Once the work started, Alex and his team were at my house working full days for a week. Throughout the project, Alex was extremely responsive, letting me know of any issues that came up, or if he needed to use the driveway that day. For any issues that came up, Alex offered solutions and price points, all of which turned out well. The final product looks amazing, clean, high quality. We had a tiny yard and we needed demo work done and hardscaping and a fence installed so we could enclose space that was previously outside the fence to make it bigger. We also needed electrical run for lighting and plumbing moved and changed. We are Building the stairs and deck but they demoed it for us. CH and L is more money than 2 other contractors. They didn't nickel and dime us and they did a great job. When minor things came up that we asked them to redo, they did it. We are very happy with their communication and the final product. We initially spoke to Muneer and then communicated with him and the owner as needed. He was an off site project manager/salesperson. Miguel was here almost every day and he was really great. The crew were here working hard rain or shine, and were courteous and friendly. Our yard is fairly sloped, and it had an awful DIY a lá 1980's pergola/shade structure on top of a very weathered concrete slab. The CH & L guys came in, tore the structure down, removed the slab, dug down to flatten our yard, and installed a retaining wall, pavers and sod. Their attention to detail was great - complete with all of the finishing touches. It ended up looking way better than we could have envisioned ourselves. We now have a lovely usable yard that will dramatically increase the quality of time spent at home with our little ones and for entertaining. We highly recommend these guys!
