I got the wonton and fishball egg noodle for $13. The wontons were really big and delicious. The egg noodles had a great texture and pull to it. It's a very casual spot, like a food court style. This place looks like it was 20 years ago. Massive skylight bringing in generous amounts of sunlight. Pinkish walls with loads of paper stuck onto it. What has changed is the way to order and grab food now. Its kinda like a cafeteria style where patrons walk up to make an order and then pickup at another station. Food was ready quick like within a minute after ordering. The dine in seems to have converted to take out containers as well now, which is a shame in terms of sustainability. Wonton fish ball lo mein - Massive wontons with whole shrimps inside, great texture and cooked right. The fishball has the right bounce to it and is quite fishy. Be a bit careful when eating because I had bit into a small fishbone, but thats just showing that the fish ball is made from real fish! This is a difficult review to write, as I've likely eaten here 100+ times over a 30-year span. I have many happy memories of eating delicious bowls of wonton noodles in this bustling restaurant -- first taken by my parents, and then later taking my own kids -- while watching staff make a mountain of wontons on a back table. We stopped coming during the pandemic and have only been back a couple of times since. The current restaurant is a shadow of its former self, but we need to set aside the burden of history and consider this restaurant on its own merits today. First, it is no longer quite a "restaurant", but now a glorified cafeteria -- you order your meals near the back, and a few quick minutes later, carry a tray with your meal to your seat. Tea is no longer provided; just hot water. Gone are the porcelain bowls and plastic chopsticks, and now disposable cardboard bowls, wooden chopsticks, and plastic spoons are the new norm. You're also expected to clean up after yourselves; the only service provided is a quick table wipe-down after you leave. The presentation is spartan but one bite reminds you why you keep coming back. The light broth, sets the scene; the egg noodle is the supporting cast, firm and never soggy, but still flavourful. The wontons are the star: large, juicy, and with massive shrimp that give a satisfying crunch -- a mouthfeel that I haven't been able to find anywhere else. The most polarizing issue is the price. At $12, the basic wonton bowl (vegetables no longer included) is a bit high for what you get, but criminal when compared to the $4-$5 bowls of the past. If I were rating the food alone, this would be an easy five-star. I'm pleased to report the food or menu hasn't changed in over three decades, the flavours bringing back a burst of nostalgia. So it's been a very long minute since we were last here and there have been a number of changes. The big one being all the prices went up! Everything is 12 bucks now and the way the menu is posted it looks like a side dish of vegetables is also 12 bucks. This is very much quick serve. You walk in, order at the cash (which is now located at the back of the restaurant) and then grab a seat. Looks like they kept their COVID setup as there is a table at the back where you grab your order when your number is called. All condiments are also located at this table and is for dine in customers only (BIG sign stating this). Hot water is complementary. Once upon a time it was tea. Everything is disposable! Cups for water, chopsticks, plastic spoons, bowl the noodles come in etc! You get the idea. A sign on the door stated extra containers were $1.00 each. What was ordered: Signature noodles Signature lo mien You get sliced beef, 2 shrimp wontons and 2 fish balls. Choice of noodles from your standard wonton noodles to rice noodles or vermicelli. We chose the wonton noodles and consistency was really good. Slightly bouncy with a nice bite to them. Wontons were still full shrimp and the fish balls were not the preformed kind. While the food was still decent was it worth $12.00? The experience wasn't. It was slightly troubling that all the serving dishes/utensils were disposable. The prices on the original menu were covered up by a strip of duct tape and you can see that prices went up by 4 bucks or more. When you are done eating you clear your own table. On food alone, I am giving this place 5 stars, but then I had to think if I am coming in, why am I being served like I am in a food court, it just is a weird way to do business, but I will come back, and their wonton's are some of the best I have had in Markham. Let's get to the good stuff, and that is.... a very limited menu, and it's on the wall, you go to the till and order, and you pay, and then you just wait while your food comes out on a tray. So my friend swears by this place, so I gave it a shot, and we went, order just a bowl of wontons, a bowl of their fishballs, and a dish of greens. This place does not go stingy on anything you order, the portions are fair, and because their menu is so small, they aren't going to go mess up what you are ordering, you are getting exactly what you want. the greens they gave us, loaded and nicely stacked, took me a while to get through that dish. What was disappointing to me was dining in, and being served disposable cutlery and bowls. On this occasion, we went to their Richmond Hill location, at West Beaver Creek and Highway 7 E. We were going to try this place last time we were in Canada for a wedding but the camera man talked us out of it. I've heard a lot about this place from our friends. The noodle is good and reminds me of noodle in Hong Kong. The wonton has a lot of wrinkles and looks like a brain which to me is a good sign of good wontons. And they are pretty good and the shrimp is great. It's more like a food court than a restaurant though. You go to the register to order your food and they call your name to pick it up. You get your own hot water, hot sauce and vinegar if you like. The hot sauce is excellent but be warned if you can't take spicy just dip lightly. The fish ball isn't really fish ball, it's more like fish slap, it was very good. I peeked in the kitchen it was cooked by some young kid which I did not expect. The food was good though. I just thought it would be cooked by some older experienced chef. Parking was horrendous during lunch time in Sunday. It got better we finished. This is all you get but what you get are all fantastic! Since I don't eat meat anymore due to health reasons, I ordered the shrimp wonton with fish balls in rice vermicelli soup. Hubby ordered their specialty thick rice noodles with beef, shrimp won ton and fish balls. My oldest ordered their beef with fish ball lo mein with oyster sauce and my youngest got the beef thick rice noodles. Everyone finished everything! It is self serve so you don't have to tip and they provide hot water for you. But if you want an extra container, it is 0.50 cent each. The best part is their chili oil. You MUST try their chili oil. Haven't visited this restaurant since the take out only days during covid19 until today. They have pretty much made the restaurant a take out/fast food type of spot. Go through to the back of the restaurant and place your order. Items available are posted on both sides of the wall with the majority of the items being $12 taxes included. Once you're ready to order they take everything down and ask if you're eating in or take out. If eating in they will call your name once ready and have your items on a tray and the food items in the black plastic take out containers, disposable chopsticks, spoons and low quality napkins. If you want free drinks it's self serve hot boiling water at the back. Once finished you MUST dispose of everything into the garbage can. Failure to do this will result in the shop keeper announcing loudly for the whole of the restaurant to hear that you failed to dispose of your garbage. For the classic wonton noodle for $12 they give you 6 large shrimp wontons mixed with shrimp paste, with wonton noodles and a few green onion scallions. I didn't like how this has changed to such a fast food restaurant and they keep posting those Michelin Star restaurant from their Hong Kong restaurant that achieved the star. We arrived around lunchtime on a recent Saturday and the place was pretty busy. The ordering process is super simple: you walk up to the counter at the back of the restaurant, place (and pay for) your order, and you're handed a bowl of soup within seconds. It's just so pleasantly efficient. I took my bowl of the Signature Noodle (Wonton, Beef & Fishball), along with a couple of cups of their house-made chili oil, back to the table and began to eat. The broth may look like clear and plain, but my first couple of slurps told me that there was a lot of depth of flavor at work in there. It's just so good. And it was enhanced once I added a generous helping of that mind-blowingly delicious chili oil. The other components fare just as well, with, of course, the wontons the highlight. If you're dining in, it's not the same as it used to be. They've changed the layout of the restaurant; there's no longer a front counter for payments or pickups. Instead, it's been completely removed and placed at the back. This change is forgivable, as I've been to a couple of restaurants that have done the same. However, when you're ordering and receiving your food, it feels like you're in a food court, even though you're in a restaurant. To place your order, you have to go to the back and state your order. This wasn't the case before, there used to be a waiter who would take your order at your table. Speaking of the order, there used to be an option where you could pick three different toppings for a bowl of noodles. Now it's been replaced with the Signature Noodle Bowl, which comes with wonton, beef slices, and fish balls. They also seem to only have water now; there are no signs of the hot tea they used to offer, which is disappointing. When I got my food, I had to pick it up, as I mentioned earlier, as if I were in a food court. The food I ordered was presented not in a bowl with spoon and chopsticks, as you would expect in a restaurant, but rather as if it were for takeout or from a food court. The only saving grace is that they haven't raised the prices too high; all the noodle soup, lo mein, and soup with toppings still cost $12. The food still has the same taste as it did a couple of years ago, and it was served quickly, which earns a star for this review. Recently we got our Uber eats order canceled for a dim sum place nearby, so we entered in this place again. Their shrimp won ton noodle soup charges $12 now, with $2 extra you get some veggie on top of it. It's still quite worth the money. Each bowl comes with 6-8 super large shrimp wontons, which is good for 2 meals for a small eater like me. The soup tasted so yummy! We also tried their fish ball and shrimp wonton noodle soup, which also tasted good. According to my friend, their spicy oil which came with the soup was their signature sauce. Unfortunately, my husband accidentally threw it away. So I didn't get a chance to try out. I got the C1 wontons, beef and fish balls soup (no noodles) $10, my dad got the A1 wontons, beef and fish balls noodle soup $9, and my mom got the A5 wonton and beef noodle soup $8. We also got a plate of veggies $3, which were some sort of steamed greens. We all loved the wontons. They were chock-full of shrimp, same as at Midland. I didn't like the beef here at all though. They were slimy and some pieces were really thick and were still raw in the middle. I liked the beef at the Midland location better. The fish balls were ok and the same as at Midland. The greens were a good mix of leaves and stems. I didn't like the sauce that they came with - too salty, but the greens tasted great when I put them in my soup. Staff were very efficient. We got our food within 5 minutes of ordering. Staff at the Midland location were much friendlier, but service here was still acceptable. They have free water and tea at the back and you are welcomed to help yourself, but they ask that you only use 1 cup per person (you can refill as many times as you like though). After confirming and reconfirming by multiple visits, I am disappointed to report that I am no longer satisfied with the quality of their noodles. Over cooked and no longer al dente as it should be. No different than the average "Congee Queen type" establishment. As such, an utter disappointment. Fortunately, with car I shall travel and enjoy elsewhere. read more
