***4.5 STARS*** Earlier this year I went to have my blood drawn for my annual physical examination where the phlebotomist and I engaged in a food conversation. The topic was matcha drinks where she said her favorite place was in Kaka'ako, specifically Imperial Plaza. After doing a search, Cooke Street Market (CSM) popped up and bookmarked. Located on the ground floor near Mari's Urban Garden, CSM opened their doors for business since April 2016 offering plate lunches, poke bowls and matcha/hojicha latte drinks. After my last hair appointment at Salon Capello, I went next door to CSM to see what the matcha latte drinks are all about. I checked out their Yelp reviews where a handful of my friends wrote above average reviews. It was just before lunchtime and beat the crowd just in time as I witnessed over 8 people behind me as I placed my order. My taste buds wanted hojicha as I enjoy the roasted, nuttiness flavor but ended up getting the strawberry matcha latte for the gram. I asked the staff if the sweetness could be customized and asked for 50% sweet. Drinks were being made one by one and soon after my drink was ready. I took it to the side to snap several photos and it was time to take that first eager sip. My drink was good but nothing home to write about. CST boasts using authentic Uji matcha which didn't stand out in my books. I wasn't impressed as my tastebuds are familiar with the matcha lattes I get in Japan. The strawberries were just okay for me as well. I was looking for semi tart strawberries with the boost of some sweetness. But overall, one of the better matcha lattes Oahu has to offer. Service was above average. Counter staff was courteous, listened to my concerns and addressed my questions with adjusting to fit my preferences. Interior was homey and welcoming with displays and decor tastefully displayed. Overall, an okay first experience and wouldn't mind coming back to sample more of the offerings at CSM. On my next visit I'll be sure to get the hojicha and perhaps order some food. read more

For those that work in the area, this is a great lunch spot with solid drink options as well. The menu features Japanese flavors such as Aburi salmon and udon. They also have poke, but my personal favorite is the Garlic Ginger chicken. You can tell that they use Japanese rice, which I love. I haven't tried too many of the drinks, but I can say the strawberry matcha latte is delish. You can park in the Imperial Plaza building and they will validate for 2 hours or find street parking out front if you're lucky. read more

Amazing strawberry matcha lattes! While the drinks here aren't cheap, they're excellent quality and huge. My personal favorite is the hojicha strawberry latte with their housemade strawberry puree, but I'm more of a hojicha fan than matcha anyways. I was so looking forward to grabbing matcha with Donna O. and Jackie K. I had heard good things about Cooke Street Market, but had never been. Glad I finally got to try the infamous matcha! The cafe's interior is so cute--lots of wooden furniture, fun merch, colorful decor, and a local feel. A lot of folks are coming to talk story, work, or study. There's a decent amount of seating from couches, communal tables, and more. It's a popular spot to hang out or grab-and-go. Our group of four all got different drinks. Came to Cooke St for their BOGO strawberry hojicha/matcha. I love the strawberry puree that they use because they use real strawberries that adds a nice chunky texture to the drink. This isn't the best hojicha I've had, but the strawberry puree makes up for it. These drinks are huge, so it's a pretty good value especially with the BOGO deal. I need to come back for their poke bowl, which I heard is amazing, but I stopped by for the BOGO deal that they're doing this week and I definitely don't regret it! As for the poke bowl, it is one of the pricier poke bowls I've purchased in a while but it was really good nonetheless. As a garlic lover I especially enjoyed the crunchy garlic pieces with my poke. I've been on a matcha latte crave lately, so decided to stop by to pick up lunch one afternoon since I was already driving around. There's ample street parking in front of the building (if you're lucky), or you can also park in the parking structure (entrance is off Kawaiaha'o Street). On the afternoon I visited, the parking gate was up, as the ticket machine was not in service but fellow Yelper reviews state that they do validate. I ordered a strawberry matcha latte with oat milk (extra $0.50 for the alternative milk - total price $8.50) and a garlic lovers spicy mayo poke bowl ($20 O__O). You have the option of rice or lettuce or half/half. Since she offered it to me, I had to attempt to be healthy and got half rice/half lettuce. The strawberry matcha latte is not bad - it comes with a strawberry puree and is pretty big so I think the pricing is justified. I wish they blended the strawberry a little more though, as I drank it up in large chunks before my latte was half done. The poke bowl was mediocre. The ahi tasted fresh but I wasn't impressed by the flavor at all. I even stopped eating halfway so I can work on my review (that doesn't usually happen .___.) I was rushing to get back to the office so I didn't take a look at the pricing beforehand. When I saw the price, I debated just getting the matcha latte and going somewhere else for lunch, but didn't want to make another stop so I decided to give it a shot. Given the price, I had high hopes it would be amazing. But it's not. Despite it being called spicy mayo, it wasn't spicy at all, and I think they're running low on mayo...It didn't look like spicy mayo to me. The ahi barely had any flavor. Very disappointing actually. I kinda went out of my way to visit, as I made a few circles hoping for street parking (I'm not a fan of their parking garage - stalls are tight and lighting dim). Decided to give it another try to get the Matcha Map stamp & went with the strawberry hojicha with oat milk this time.
