2.5 stars, ok? This is the second time we've been here, and this time it was hopping with people. The first time, we were the only ones there. Both times, the guy at the register is unsmiling and while not rude, certainly not welcoming! Maybe he's just a dour person, but I didn't feel that he cared one way or the other if he got our business. This is a very casual place -- don't bring a date here. You walk up to the counter, after standing in line if it's busy, and order at the register fast-food style. We ordered a handful of small things to go. It was a case of I'm starving, gotta put something in my stomach, and obtain more Yelp material. The wait was about five-ten minutes. I was so hungry that I started eating in the car -- not a good idea! The paratha was piping hot and the raita was so runny it dripped all over my hair, clothes, and the car seat -- ouch. Note to self: make sure glove compartment is always stocked with napkins, 'cause I forgot to grab some at the restaurant. But fresh, hot food: good. It was very well cooked, no burned parts and not skimpy on potato. However, I will not order raita here again. It was lame. No flavor, no chunks of onion, cucumber, or tomato. Lame! Once home, I noticed that they'd packed some mint chutney in a very tiny container, but also provided a nice-sized serving of carrot pickle. That's normally something I really love, but I tried it, and it wasn't quite the way I like it. It's so nice that they included it though! That's rare! The chutney was halfway decent, nothing to get excited about. The samosas were unacceptable because they had ginger in them. I can't stand biting into ginger (but now I know what to suggest to a friend of mine who loves it) so I was barely able to eat them. For a plus, the samosas were hot and delicious besides the ginger. I wonder if I could order them without ginger? Extra points for how nicely packed in the bag everything was. Obviously they have a system that works -- one guy takes the order and money, and the others bring the food out to your table if you eat in, or calls you up to the counter for takeout. I don't think I'd eat in; it's too much like being in India itself. Not my favorite place in the world. I'll probably go back, and order different things to try them out. I miss living by this place. My wife and I had walked past it numerous times before peeking in, then peeked in many more times before getting up the courage to finally just order something & see what happens. After that seal was broken, we were coming back more & more... and then we moved. :( I still come back when I'm in the area. Anyway, back the the restaurant. I'm no chaat expert (more an apprentice), but once I discovered that we liked most things on the menu, I started trying all the other chaat or sweets/snacks places around there in Sunnyvale. There are a bunch but this place consistenly won for the right mix of good, fast, 'cheap'. The biggest thing I'd ask for would be a cheat sheet for chaat novices. There are little to no pics or descriptions, and even when I come with Indian friends, I learn that chaat is far from universal and they're of limitted help. My recommendation? Go with a group of people who like indian food (spices) in general... maybe 4 of you so that you can sit together, and order up 6 random dishes. :) It's normally what I'd call medium spicy, with some dishes a very mild & some with some heat. I prefer light spicy, but enjoy/handle about everything here without asking for any certain level of spicyness. If uncertain where to start, try 'behl puri' (puffed rice), 'pani puri' (hallow crackers you poke open & fill with stuff including the 'spicy water' before popping the entire thing in your mouth), 'chaat samosa' (big samosa buried under chickpeas/masala), a paratha (can be quite spicy sometimes), and a combo platter for your friend that doesn't like to share (it's like an indian bento box). If it's not crowded, ask for help. The guy at the register seems to be friendlier & more helpful than he might look. Then take a pitcher of water to your table & watch some bollywood vids. They're distractingly hilarioius sometimes (I apologize at least once per visit to my wife/friends when I miss what they were saying). read more

I ordered bhel thali and got a free cockroach in kadhi. Need I say more. That's not an accident by the way, it happens when you keep your kitchen dirty. But you'll never understand. This one of the many places serving the north Indian community in the area. This is a family style restaurant specializing in chaat. The variety is not as good as other places-essentially the best items are the chaat and paratha's ,but no indochinese dishes, hakka noodles or even idli. The variety is mos def a weakness, but if you want have a chaat craving this place it'll hit it. The pricing is awesome-for 20 bucks you can get 6-7 items, and that's definitely a plus. The decor is not fancy. the space seems a little small, with plain, white walls, white tables white chairs and some upholstery that has seen better days.This is not a place you take to impress someone-not great for your boss or a first date. The parking is shared with the rest of the strip mall , and is always nearly full. While you order at the counter, the staff will bring your food out to your table which is nice. I've always found the service to be friendly even when jam packed during the lunch rush. All credit/debit cards accepted except amex The food is pretty much what makes this a four star review. We ordered a togo on Thursday night and just one word - plain horrible! I had no idea the quality at the place went so much downhill. It used to be good but we hadn't visited for quite some time. Good, cheap, quick chaat. It really isn't the best chaat I have ever had and I can't say that it would be on my list of top places to recommend to folks or to bring friends. However, I would come here again. As with many folks, I was the only non-Indian person eating here. I totally forgot everything I knew about chaat as soon as I opened the menu and just went with the safe choice of the House Thali and chai to drink (there are pitchers of water in the corner as well). Don't forget to look at the specials written on a small white board to the right of the counter - they are easy to miss. I only noticed them after I ordered. The chai is slightly sweet - but not too much for a person who doesn't like really sweet things like me. Very, very yummy. And I think that Indian food is supposed to be salty, no? read more

What do I know about Chaat? Not a damn thing. But let me share my experience. I went in straight to the counter and was dumbfounded by the menu. No explanations, just the Indian food names, so I knew I was on my own. The dude at the register was kind of mean-mugging me, as I was the only non-Hindi in the joint. OK. Well, I gathered some courage and told him to give me "whatever's good and popular". He smiled and understood. Minutes later, I was brought a "sampler" mix of veggie specialties and some nan. I recognized the potato dish and the spinach, but the rest was a flavorful mystery. It was quite good--even if I didn't know what the hell I was eating. I have been a regular here for the past year and a half. The house thali is really good. The quality is always consistent and there is very little deviation. For it's price I think this is the most authentic Indian food that you could find in the Bay Area. This is the one place that I will miss the most if I move from Sunnyvale I have been here with non Indian friends and I do not think there is any truth to the "mean mugging" part of some other reviewers. read more

Busy - almost always. Noisy - most certainly. Smelly -- kinda. But you forgive everything once you get a taste of their chaat / parathas / thaali (on most days). Cheap and definitely fulfilling for the days you just want a good aloo paratha. Stay away from the malai paneer - it's like coconut chutney and paneer, which I certainly didn't like. Always safe - chaats and parathas. Enjoy and say a hi to the guy manning the cash register. He's a little impatient if you're trying to decide, but win him over with a smile and ask him for his suggestions for your mood. :) read more

This place is just sad! We made the mistake of visiting this place for chaat. It was absolutely horrendous ! Here's a list of what we tried and the issues: * Hara bhara bhel : this apparently was made in bulk and not per order. Though the chutneys were good, the dish was a soggy mess. * Dabeli: except for the fact that they used buns and potatoes there was not much resemblance to dabeli. Had they called it. "Bhaji Pav", it would have been a good dish. But don't set expectations for something and then present an underwhelming rendition ! * Sev puri: this had bad chutney! Also , the ingredients were carefully added to make sure that not even an ounce of extra sev was put in ! The sev was probably made on the premise and tasted bad. We ended up going to Bikaner to cleanse our palate! I saw many people order thaali - maybe that tastes decent. Maybe they should call themselves Thali House not Chaat House! read more

The counter staff's customer service is (to put it politely) disinterested and their disinterested attempt to explain the menu wasn't very understandable (there are very few descriptions on the actual menu - you have to use the takeout menu). We ordered: Mango lassi Spinach poori Aloo gobi Kadhi chawal Paneer masala I think we decided a few bites in that it was pretty mediocre. Heavy on the grease for sure. The booth that we sat in had a sticky tabletop and sticky seats which we chose to ignore for the sake of waiting for the food to experience the restaurant in full. I definitely put my clothes in the laundry hamper afterwards, though. After the meal, all three in our group had upset stomachs. Not a pleasant memory. read more

I love this place and eat here most times that I'm in the area. It's a plain place, in a little strip mall, you go to the counter, order, pay, then get the food delivered to your table. The servers are always patient and friendly and the service is good. The all-veg food, however, is consistently fresh and excellent. And that's why we keep returning. On this last visit, we had the bhel poori (large and delicious), chaat samosa (I enjoy getting my samosa with chana masala), and the house thali, which comes with so many treats and is a little feast unto itself. I think I've been spoiled from being to too many good chaat places like Chaat Paradise and Vik's. The chaat here wasn't up to my usual liking. My friend and I ordered several dishes, including bhel puri, aloo tikki, and pani puri. The bhel puri was dry and not very flavorful and the pani puri was slightly stale and didn't come with the usual green mint water, and had very little filling. The aloo tikki was good though, the potatoes were soft, flavorful, and served hot, so it was very enjoyable. Maybe I need to come back and try other things, but I think at this point I'd rather drive a little further on El Camino towards Mountain View and get Chaat Paradise! read more

So I'm not a huge expert on the indian, nevermind the veg stuff.... and the first probably 4-5 times I went here(at someone else's request), were ok... nothing special. Then... about 2 months ago.... wow.... our guide(the white guy), ordered some different stuff.... and wow.... I try not to hit this place up too often, based on what we order, we usually walk away at close to $13-15/person, and it's heavy, and it's not helping me lose weight... but it's quite a treat. Also add in that it's close to work, pretty fast, and so long as you don't go during probably a 15-20 minute window, you can find a spot during lunch. read more

I was the only non Indian here :) this place has very authentic home style food. It's tasty and you have tons of veggie options. I ordered rajma(beans) and bread and it tasted like homemade. This review is solely based on some chaat I tasted here considering it's a 'chaat' place: Plus: + sev poori was tasty + ragda pattice was above average but nothing to get excited about + mango lassi was good but can be improved as it tasted little watery rather than thick as it should be + service was good and quick + good price point on most items Minus: - pav vada was a complete disaster. The vada tasted as if the potato balls in it was mixed with raw uncooked flour (I guess the same flour in which the potato balls are immersed and then fried). It tasted really weird and gave me a feeling that I am eating something else along with spiced potatoes. A sesame burger bun was served as pav, which was not expected as in the Bay Area we do get buns which taste and appear close like Indian pavs. - I was disappointed when I ate khasta kachori as the kachori was just a mere big size puri and didn't have any filing which normally you would see in khasta kachori. The chole filing in it was good though (so I assume chole bhature might be good to try) - green chutney had lot of green color in it Will I come back? - NO. I am here sometimes for lunch if I run out of all other options. They do have Indian thali meals (lunch sampler) which is O.K. They do serve other chat dishes which I have never tried. Decent spot for take-out, vegetarian options aplenty. My boss ordered take out dishes from here one day when we had to work through lunch. Got a sturdy foil three-compartment dish with cardboard lid- the best type of dish for safely transporting food. My dish contained a large portion of white rice, a spicy lentil stew-like dish, and saag paneer, along with bread and yogurt. First off, the yogurt sauce was the best I've had- I usually don't care for it and don't use it, but this one was cold and cooling rather than bitter. Had a slight almost garlicky taste to it. Definitely allowed me to eat more of the lentils than I otherwise would have. Bread was just okay- have had much better elsewhere. Saag paneer was fine, nothing remarkable. Surprisingly filling considering it didn't look like a whole lot of food and was vegetarian. Wouldn't turn down food from here again, but probably wouldn't go out of my way to go back myself, either. read more

I'm just not a fan. I got the Dahi Bateta Puri and it was undersalted and underspiced. All I got was the sweet flavor of the tamarind they put in the bottom and the oil from the sev/poori. I've been told they have really good chana and paranthas, but then they shouldn't call themselves Chaat House if they can't make chaat well. read more

Whatever I have said about Madras Cafe holds true for Chaat House - its the reliable restaurant in the community that you know you can go back to when you're out of options and want simple, tasty food that doesn't burn a hole in your wallet. Of course, not everything is good, some of the stuffed parathas (hara bhara eg) are excellent, yet others (alu, paneer) are just average. The biggest draw is the house thali which is the perfect size meal. The cooking for all the dishes is excellent and the food tastes fresh. They match Chaat Paradise dish for dish and their service is much more efficient. The horde of workers at the restaurant feels like one big networked family. I love Chaat House and recommend it to anyone wanting typical indian simple vegetarian food. read more

I used to be a big fan of this place. Couple of years back I used to buy dinner at least twice a week. I visited the restaurant recently. For some reason now I feel that the quality of the place went down significantly. May be because of the competition? Only Chaat house can answer that question. Coming back to my experience. I ordered vegetable cutlet and aloo tikki with channa. The cutlet was half cooked. It had raw flour inside though the outside was golden brown. I had cutlets at this place before. It used to be handmade. But now looking at the uniform size of the cutlets I don't think it is handmade anymore. Aloo in the aloo tikki with channa was also a disaster. I had this experience twice so far. I can give the benefit of doubt the first time. But not the second time. As it happened twice already I am really contemplating if I should come back to this place again. Two stars as it used to be good! read more

The cuisine at Chaat House gets the ultimate compliment: It tastes like the dinners served at my boyfriend's parents' home in Bombay. I had the House Thali, on the recommendation of other Yelpers, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. The food was fresh, quick and reasonably priced. For $9.69, including tax, I had the thali -- which I couldn't finish -- and a mango lassi. The wheat rotis had that nice, course texture to them that I remembered from my trip to India; the yellow dal was buttery; and the aloo cabbage was just slightly sweet. Everything was piping hot. It's true that Chaat House doesn't offer much ambiance -- although, during a busy hour, you might liken it to a Bombay street. The fluorescent lights, hard booths and tile floors threaten to spoil the mood. Just ignore it -- close your eyes and focus on the food. We totally got turned off after eating their harabhara paratha which was just filled with potatoes and green food color. we ordered it thinking it was healthy paratha and gosh we probably chose the most unhealthiest paratha they had..warning warning...don't choose that dish... They have really improved the taste of their vegetarian dishes(tried only those), the curries taste fresh and very homemade like, not oily. Big fan of their parathas, which might differ a lot in taste depending on the rush hour in my experience(less rush, better stuffed & cooked). And the staff is just really nice. read more
