The food was pretty awful. We ordered the following: Pad Thai - 2/5 2 pad see ew 3/5 BBQ & Pork rice dish 1/5 Hainese broiled chicken 1/5 Not sure why this place was rated so highly. It's not good at all. The broiled chicken was awful we couldn't even eat it, it was so dry and bland. The only thing that was decent on that dish was the rice. They also forgot the broth that goes on the side of that dish. Pad Thai was inconsistent and way to spicy for being "medium spice" the noodles was overly sweet. The BBQ pork & roasted pork dish was dry also and the food coloring on it was just sad. There was little to no meat on the dish, we were really shock at the portion considering it was $15! The only thing that was decent was our pad see ew. Definitely won't be back, please get your food standard up. read more

Parking was easy. Plenty of spots, located little outside of other convoy restaurants. The restaurant itself was clean, very basic decor. Service here was great, start to the end. They were attentive all through out the time we were there. Price wise, I thought it was fair for the portion we've received. I've got drunken noodles with broccoli. As soon as it came out, I knew, this noodles were cooked for too long. It looked little mushy already. I also thought their spicy level wasn't that spicy They made it sound like it was going to be super spicy for level six and seven but it really was more like spicy level of 4 or 5. They offered free dessert which I'm not really sure what it was called but it was very delicious and I really appreciated that. Chana Thai is hands down our favorite Thai restaurant in San Diego. We have been coming here for over 10 years because it is a family run restaurant with super authentic and delicious Thai and Lao food. The owner is often there and she always comes to your table to say hello and answer any questions. On our last visit we came with our friend who grew up in Thailand and they spoke together in Thai and he made sure everything we ordered was "Thai Hot" which is crazy hot but so worth it (but you can of course order any spice level you like). The restaurant is small, intimate and very comfortable. The food is truly outstanding and affordable and we will be coming here for many many miles re visits in the years to come. read more

Chaba Thai Kitchen has quickly become my go to spot in San Diego for affordable, tasty Thai food! I've been to many others and no other place gets it quite as right at a medium price point. I've been here now about 5 times over the course of 2 years and it's been consistently delicious which is important to me for a go to spot. Food: We ordered two dishes, the chicken pad Thai and pineapple fried rice. I've had these dishes at many other Thai places so my ratings are in relation to those. Chicken Pad Thai (8.5/10) The pad Thai is slightly above the standard of what I expect from this dish. The dish comes with the standard bean sprouts and crushed peanuts and when you squeeze a bit of lime on top, the sourness is in perfect balance with the sweetness of the noodles. They give an adequate amount of meat and you can choose different protein options depending on what you're a in the mood for. Pineapple Fried Rice (9/10) This dish is one of my favorites to order at Thai places for its depth of flavor and theirs did not disappoint! The curry flavor of the rice is perfectly balanced by the sweetness of the pineapple and the cashews add a nice earthy flavor to the mix. It comes with both shrimp and chicken and the reason it isn't a 10 is the amount of protein they give. It's not small but I'd like there to be a little bit more since the dish is usually more expensive than the others. Overall, I'd say it's a must try if you've never had it before and are looking to try something flavorful. Tapioca with Coconut Milk (9/10) So this is the second time I've been here and they've given me and my party this dessert FOR FREE. I don't know many restaurants that do something like that still but I appreciate it 100%. You can order this on the side and honestly I think it's worth it. The sweetness of the coconut milk is a perfect end to the meal and could even leave that sweet tooth craving satisfied if you're not a heavy eater. Honestly this small gesture is what really makes me love this place and if you're looking to end the meal on a sweet note this is the way to go! Service (8/10) We came on a not so busy weekday and the server was very attentive to us. He consistently checked up on us and made sure we had enough water and brought out the aforementioned dessert without question when we finished eating. He seemed to enjoy working there and made the overall experience enjoyable. Ambiance (6/10) Honestly the only thing this place lacks is ambiance. The decor is sparse but it's very clean inside. There isn't a huge amount of seating but it's not the smallest restaurant I've been in either. Again I recommend this place for a more regular or relaxed spot for friends or the occasional date but it's not meant to be about the decor. It's clean, small and seating is where ever you'd like. The ladies are super nice and explain the menu if you have questions. Now for the folks who like heat. They scale it at 1 to 10. 10 being the hottest. I ordered a 3 thinking it was mild because I can't handle heat as well as others. 3 was as hot as a jalapeño with a leftover stinging heat that follows you for the next hour after eating. So my lunch-mate loved everything and I liked most of it, except the soup, so 4*. We ordered everything mild which turned out too mild for me. But the chili sauces they brought on the side were fantastic! I loved the green chili in vinegar especially! 1. Special Tom Yum soup with seafood. The broth was not as flavorful as I expected. However, it was chock full of fish, squid, mussels and shrimp- so I just dipped my seafood in some of the side of chili crisp and it was delicious that way. 2. Papaya salad Lao style - excellent but they were out of crab. I really loved this but would order it much more spicy next time. 3. Khao Soi: basically yellow chicken curry over noodles- Again, I would order it much more spicy next time. The general curry flavor and the chicken were really good. The only thing I didn't care for were the crispy noodle toppings. I loved the chewiness of the actual noodles in the curry and the chicken was thinly sliced and delicious. We poured the curry over our side orders of sticky rice and enjoyed it very much . 4. Beef jerky- lol- this one cracked me up because it wasn't quite jerky. It came out warm and still had some moisture. Basically slightly over well-done chunks of beef- still very tasty and possibly my favorite of all 4 dishes. The sweet and tart sauce on the side was good for dipping the strips too. Pretty good overall, the only disappointment was the soup broth. Came here for a work lunch - beware this place is pretty popular and got filled up by 12pm! Luckily we came around 11:15 and there were still several seats open. Similar to the restaurant getting busy, so does the parking lot - Chaba Thai shares parking with several other restaurants so keep that in mind when you come during peak hours! My boss saw their Khao-Soi on social media and we both knew we HAD to come try it...and boy were we glad we got the chance to!! Tofu Spring Rolls (2pc - $6.45): A bit pricey for spring rolls, albeit they were definitely thicker than most places'. Nice fresh ingredients - Shrimp is the same price, so if you're ever hesitant on getting the more expensive meat, Chaba Thai isn't a place where you need to worry about that! Khao Soi (~$10): We decided to share a bowl because we figured it looked like a large serving - we were so glad we did! They give you a hefty portion, definitely enough for two people (which makes this meal super cheap!). There's deep-fried crunchy noodles laid on top, and beneath was the creamy curry goodness enveloping the egg noodles. I'm usually not a fan of egg noodles, but these were thick and wavy, which made the noodles have a bounce to them. You can choose between Chicken or Beef - we chose Chicken and it wasn't dry at all. If you like curry even remotely, you HAVE to give this a try. Staff was very sweet and attentive - they tried to tend to their full restaurant with just two servers, but always had a smile on their faces. This place is amazing! For takeout, We ordered vegetable massaman curry and tofu basil drunken noodles, with medium spiciness. Fantastic. The curry was the right balance between sweet and spicy and had a great mix of veggies. Noodles were delicious too! The tofu was crispy. Plus, they gave us complementary dessert: a cantaloupe tapioca coconut milk dessert. I have never had it before, but it was so refreshing right after a hot and spicy meal! Makes me want to go back for more (or at least try making it myself!). :) As an aside, I saw the restaurant workers approach a man who seemed to be homeless with so much kindness. He seemed hungry, so instead of pushing him away, they offered to make him some food. Especially considering the challenges small restaurants like this likely have been facing since the pandemic, I was so moved by this, I wish I could give them 10 stars! I have been here twice now. Both times, the food was great and the customer service was exceptional. First time I had the pineapple fried rice and the most recent time I went, we got tom yum soup, drunken noodles, and a dish that had shrimp, green beans, basil, and bell peppers. We did get 2 starters of rolled crispy shrimp (bomb) and fried fish cake (not my thing but tasted good) With most of the people getting to go orders I thought it was safe to get some stuff for later and I was right! Real talk, this review is mainly based on one dish - Pad Thai. To me, a Thai restaurant's Pad Thai is a good indicator if the rest of the food is going to be delicious. Ten times out of ten, a bad Pad Thai has led to me never returning to that restaurant lol. Well I'm happy to report that the Pad Thai at Chaba is very good! Sometimes the noodles are too dry and sometimes they are too saucy. Chaba has a great balance and the noodles are always cooked perfectly. My go to is Shrimp Pad Thai with a medium level of spicy. Now since the Pad Thai was a hit, I've tried many other dishes here since. I'm all about those noods so I've gotten the Drunken Noodles and the Pad See Ew here as well. Both are good but the Drunken Noodles are definitely preferred. Their curries are good, too and for apps, I like the Shrimp Rolls and Grilled Pork Neck. Oh and every time I've ordered here, they give you a free small bowl of dessert - it's a coconut milk and tapioca cold dessert with balls of cantaloupe. So simple but it is addicting! TAKEOUT CUSTOMERS BEWARE. LOOK AT RECENT TO-GO REVIEWS. They are NOT the same containers they used years ago!!! Let me tell you... the portion sizes here are NOW HORRIBLE. I ordered two dishes from here, duck larb and spicy basil noodles. Severely disappointed with my experience because it looked like I received TWO kids sized portioned meals!? Let me reiterate, the duck larb came in a tiny container, and the portion size weighed out to less than 10 oz, plus it was expensive! Didn't even taste like larb at all. It was instead tossed with a lime base. Not spicy. Definitely the cheap version of a larb. I would advise you this is NOT the authentic version. NO khao khua. NO prik bon. These TWO important ingredients make larb, larb. But it's just plain ol'duck tossed in lime sauce. There literally was only one layer lined up in the container. What you see is what you get for $9. (see attached photo). I would also comment that I was so surprised that I picked up the container a few times to compare the weight of the noodles container....it is 10 times lighter. Strange, don't you think? Also got the spicy basil noodles. Erm....there were 2 tiny stems of basil in the dish. Where were the rest? The dish is supposed to be doused with a rich basil aroma. But there wasn't. Noodles were very bland that it tasted old. Not a great way to impress, at all. I paid $10.95 for something that doesn't come close to being called 'basil noodles'. It was spicy though, very mild spicy(it was a 5). After seeing pictures on Yelp and all the portion sizes, did they cheat me? Why did their portions look bigger, I thought? Went in on a Tuesday evening for dinner. Ordered the Curry Puffs, the Khao Soi Noodles with beef, the Khao Kluk Kapi Fried Rice, & a Thai Tea. Everything was delicious! The Khao Soi portion was hefty, the fried rice dish was really good but the meat portion was very small. The curry puffs were good as well but are slightly different than what is pictured on the menu. The lady working was super nice, & our food came out quickly!
