Martin's Automotive turned the low point of my 1300 mile road trip into a positive outcome. This…read moretrip is a major, loaded down with expedition; Ram 3500 diesel truck with a camper shell, towing 6000 pounds of boat on a tandem axle trailer - tons of gear and tools inside both, plus me and two dogs. Pure fate and luck that I happened to pull over to inspect an unusual noise/vibration for the second time and I was within eyesight of Martin's shop. Unable to identify the problem, I continued another mile or two down the road, again pulling over because something was just not right. Finally it dawned on me what the trouble most likely was, since I had experienced similar symptoms once before manny years ago. I crawled underneath the truck and verified that the rear axle driveshaft center support bearing (carrier bearing) was absolutely wrecked! The 2 piece driveshaft was slamming around inside a metal hoop that was the frame around the bearing- all internal parts gone. Had I continued driving substantially, eventually the driveshaft would have failed, with result ranging from stranded on the roadside to a catastrophic accident. I need to set the scene a little bit; this location is on the Guide Meridian, a busy thoroughfare that runs from Bellingham, one of Washington's substantial cities outside of the Seattle-Tacoma area. The road goes to British Columbia, and in between is mostly rural farm land, but the road itself is scattered with various businesses and homes. But there's not much around, including choices for automotive services. I pulled a uturn and went to Martin's, just on a hunch that it was meant to be. The owner, RC, crawled under the truck and agreed with my diagnosis. This is 2:00 pm on a Thursday afternoon and the shop closes at 5:00. Within a few minutes, the parts were ordered and delivered to the shop. The owner says there's no way he can get to my vehicle due to other customers ahead of me and have it done in the same business day. But he does tell me that he will come back after hours and begin the job, and most likely the truck will be close to ready when he opens at 8 o'clock the next morning. he gave me significant confidence that I would be able to resume my journey the next day. So there I was with two dogs, all my stuff, and no place to stay. I found a hotel nearby which was suitable and the shop loaned me a car. I end up having everything I needed to be comfortable, including wonderful hospitality from the shop owner, and his wife. My plan was to call the shop at eight in the morning. But as I ate my breakfast in the hotel lobby, I decided to wait a few minutes, so it's not to appear too anxious. I happen to glance at my phone and noticed a message from RC the shop owner Had come in between 730 and eight I just had not noticed it. It indicated my truck was ready and I should come to the shop. When I got there, the truck was all set to go and backed up to my boat trailer ready to be hitched. Overnight I had looked up the likely parts cost and tried to estimate the number of hours of labor required for the job. Let's just say Martin's Automtive charges were fair and more or less what I expected. I was in a circumstance where I could've easily been taken advantage of by less than scrupulous shop. And it could have side-lined me for days instead of hours. I feel so fortunate to have stumbled upon Martin's Automotive. My experience there was 5 star-plus. I do not hesitate to recommend this honest auto repair business. Thanks RC!

Green being good to go, yellow being problems needed to be look at in the near future, and red being problems that needed to be addressed right now. All with explanations and questions further answered by the manager who explained it to me well esp for someone with no car knowledge. The manager was really upfront with me telling the costs of those repairs and if I was looking to buy a new car it might be cheaper to get a new one. I've had mine for 11 years that's been on multiple cross country road trips and I was not responsible enough to do good maintenance on it. It really made me trust them. I did not feel like I was getting hustled whatsoever which is something I'm sure everyone fears going into the auto shop. Not to mention they were dog friendly, had free coffee, and a record player with various records available for you to play. I got my vehicle within the hour. They gave me a new air freshener, thank you card with a company pen / business card inside, and they included a keychain with a punch card for a reward after some visits. Like wow! Unfortunately, I've had a really distasteful experience just recently and am therefore going elsewhere for my future auto service needs. I called to schedule a service appointment requesting three items be addressed: install new headlight assembly (with the new part that I provided), fix front passenger door lock that had stopped working (actuator replacement), and oil change, and I was given a quote for this work. During the work, they called me and told me that I also needed a new PCV valve, which would add $173.39 to the cost, which I approved. When I went to pick up my vehicle, they hadn't addressed the door lock issue at all and said that they could offer me a quote for that. However, they had already quoted me for that, which is why my vehicle was there to begin with! In the end, they charged me the full amount without having replaced the actuator. As I look at other reviews, I see I'm not the first to have had this experience with Sterling. Lastly, when I called around about getting the door lock fixed elsewhere, it was much cheaper than the additional amount they were wanting. If you are going to go with Sterling, I would highly recommend you get *everything* in writing, even if the conversation on the phone is as clear as day. Otherwise, all you're going to hear is "oops, sorry for your misunderstanding."

First let me say that I have a general mistrust of car dealers in general…read more Quite a few years ago we started looking to downsize from our mini van. We looked at many places, and had not even considered a Volvo. After stopping in, meeting James, and test driving a 2002 V70 we made deal, including trading in the mini van, that was very fair. I started to like James. We bought an extended warranty at the time, and felt it prudent to have Bruce Cox do the service as well. A couple years later I started looking for a more comfortable car to replace the Chevy Cavalier I was using to commute to Seattle. Again, after some looking around we ended up talking to James and making a fair deal on a 2002 S60. We had Bruce Cox do the service on that as well. A few years later, the S60 was totaled in a T Bone accident in which no one was injured. I decided I wanted another S60,and this time went to see James first, and he happened to have a 2005 S60 T5 on the lot that was exactly what I was looking for. Once again, made a fair deal, and had them start doing the service. That car to date I have put on over 140,000 miles and it is still going strong with a total of 205,000 miles on it. After the last repair, Bruce himself even called with a followup to make sure the work was done to my satisfaction. The 02 V70 was totaled in another accident, again with no injuries, after we put close to 150,000 miles on it. The only reason we didn't go to James for a replacement was because we replaced with a pickup. And since then we have replaced that pickup, and have had several poor experiences with car dealers in the process. I continue to have most of my service and all of my repairs done there because in over 300,000 miles put on the cars I have had serviced there, I have not had a bad experience. I'm thinking the next car will be another Volvo, and will most likely buy again from Bruce Cox Imports, because they are the ONLY car dealer I really feel I can trust. UPDATE 10/23/18 Since last review I now have 230,000 on the 05 S60 and still having Bruce cox do the service and repairs. Ended up buying a ford Escape from another dealer rather than a Volvo,but will be having Bruce Cox do the service on that vehicle.

I have always taken my car to Subaru dealership for service and this time decided to go outside the…read moredealership to have my front end assessed. Bruce Cox had good reviews so I brought my car in. I was told I had to replace my front passenger side axel, tie rods and front and rear differentials, transmission fluid service and a little more. I was called and notified of what was to be done, provided an estimate for the work and told my car was already on the lift and they could start now. Since bad weather was forecasted and I basically work out of my car I needed my car back asap and was worried about not fixing it and having to deal with driving in ice and snow. I approved them to do the work. I got my car back in two days and paid a fortune. my first concern was that the "diagnostic fee" wasnt applied to the overall work costs, It was in addition to. Not my normal experience but what could I do? they refused to discount the Dx fee. I paid and drove home. The following day of driving my car, the front end was vibrating so much and I had evidence of an oil leak on my driveway. So I took it back in. They told me nothing was wrong, showed me a video of the underside of my car and said there was no evidence of an oil leak. So I picked my car back up and within a few days the noise that brought me in the first place was back. In the meantime I contacted Subaru dealer had them assess what was going on and they reported the driver side axel was bad and needed replaced highlighting that the rear differentials were over filled and leaking, my transmission fluid still looked dirty despite the service I had done at Bruce Cox and the cost for fixing the driver side axel and tie rods at Subaru was 1/2 the cost!!!!! and the Dx fee was applied to the overall cost of the work done. I feel that I was financially taken advantage by Bruce Cox and despite the work they did having a "warranty" I don't trust taking back. Super unfortunate for my wallet and lost faith in them. Hard lesson learned.
