I love Brazilian cuisine. So when I found out that this place is but a stone's throw from where I work, that inner voice inside my head turned into a loud calling for me to take a gander over to Chalanas. Walking in, with my gorgeous Brazilian friend, I knew that this place is as authentic as you can get. The people are speaking the language, the décor looks like it's been transplanted from the mother country, and the food is superb. The cornucopia is served buffet style--which gave me more reason to love this place--and you simply grab whatever you want and then have everything weighed at the counter. The process is easy enough. If you're in the mood for some rodizio, they have that too. Alas don't forget about the extra helping of farofa if you really want to experience the best of Brazilian cuisine. My friend, who looks like those damn Brazilian Victoria Secret girls, ate even more than me and at the end looked like she was due to give birth at any moment...which made the whole thing even hotter. Anyways, I digress but my point is this place is legit and definitely worth checking-out. There's a reason why it has such a high rating. I would have to agree with what the masses have spoken. Went here on a Sunday afternoon and had a blast! Very authentic Brazilian feel, which I loved! As soon as my boyfriend and I walked in we were greeted as if we were regulars. The waitress immediately showed us to a table (this place can get packed quickly so there is also a counter area with bar stools if you have a small party), suggested a great drink, Caipirinha. The buffet area is delicious, lots of variety and the meats are seasoned and cooked well. You should definitely should stop by this spot in Mt. Vernon. read more

Searched the area for a good lunch spot and Chalana's came up first and I can see why....Brough my co-workers to this place and we were not disappointed. The Brazilian meats were excellent! Once we figured out how the line worked we were set. The meat is cut to order and you can order as much as you like as it by the pound... Went with wife and our daughter who attends Sarah Lawrence College. Opted out of the hyper-expensive restaurants of Bronxville and settled on Brazilian cuisine for lunch. Believe it or not, asked iPhone Siri for Brazilian Restaurants and she came up with a few. Because of our close proximity at the moment, we chose Chalanas. We're from Hawai'i so we used our rented car GPS to find the location (funny huh? All these female gender-gadgets getting us around NY...). Anyway, we finally find the place and are a little hesitant, as it didn't look like what we expected (never ever assume...). Small parking lot, small diner. Wife says "I don't know dear". But I'm not in the mood to go on another food hunt, so we go in. Small place, and unlike the other reviews, not crowded so we must have come between the busy times. Bottom line, the food was excellent! My wife and I are not red-meat eaters so we settled on the chicken, salads, black beans, yellow rice and a couple of beers. It was a hearty fulfilling, tasty meal for all three of us, and along with three beers, the total cost came to $22.80. The help was friendly (in Hawai'i we would say that they had a lot of "Aloha"). When I went to pay the cashier, I gave him a credit card and my Hawai'i drivers license as ID. He looked at it and asked "you're from Hawai'i?" After acknowledging that I was, he asked "do you surf?". I said yes again. Then I told him that there are a lot of Brazilians moving to Hawai'i, which surprised him, and in the town that I'm from (Kailua) there is a Brazilian Bikini Shop. He laughed. Lastly I told him that their food was excellent, and that a restaurant just like theirs would be a money-making hit in my hometown. I have been going to this place for years. But every time I have gone in the last year or so the meat has always been overcooked, and they run out of different cuts on a pretty regular basis. Chalanas destroys the quality of life for the surrounding area in Mount Vernon. I wouldn't eat there even if someone paid for my meals for as long as I live. Their music echoes through our neighborhood for hours from their parking lot. For which they have no permit. I live at least a half mile away and with all the windows closed I can still hear their music. The Mount Vernon police who are supposed to enforce city codes do nothing. They deliberately allow a private company to break the law. This has been going on for years. I hope Chalanas chokes on its own BBQ sauce and the people who own it and patronize it burn in the depths of hell for eternity. read more

Went here for lunch. -- This place is awesome! You serve yourself at the buffet, and then your plate is weighed, and you pay. I advise trying the pork, the chicken, and their salad-looking cabbage at the end. (The cabbage is cooked with garlic and it complements the meat VERY well! ) Also: GET one of the truffles to the left of the register (in the see-through shelf. They had coconut and chocolate ones when I was there.) I forget what they're called but they're AMAZING, and made with sweetened condensed milk, possibly cocoa, and a few other ingredients. This place is amazing! Really a hidden gem compared to other expensive and commercialized Brazilian steakhouses. The meat is absolutely delicious. The caipirinhas are awesome. And the price is unbeatable. It's a feel good, casual place where you get up and serve yourself. Someone comes around for drink orders. Also met a friend of mine and my cousin from Brazil, so I guess that's good. Best Brazilian restaurant in town. Siminhos (USA Brazilian) restaurant has dry meat that can be a hassle to chew. They have outdoor seating with native hits playing from Brazil. The prices are a bit expensive though-$10 a pound of meat and $7 a pound of buffet. If you intend to eat a lot of food, it would be better to head to Tres Chaves at Orchard Street in Yonkers. Any questions, do not hesitate to ask. read more

My boyfriend and I love Brazilian BBQ and have had many different great restaurants. We were really disappointed by our experience at Chalanas. The only thing we really liked was the Skirt Steak and the black beans with pork. We really didn't like lamb it was very plain and kind of dry. The rice and the chicken were average. What was most disappointing about ​this restaurant was the service. We had never been here before so we walked in and sat down and were waiting for a waiter or waitress to come over. Although people clearly saw us sitting there not one staff member said anything to us. After about 5 minutes we asked if we get our own food or how it works. No one was really helpful and we understand that there was a bit of a language barrier which was okay but we actually had to have another patron sitting eating their food help us to understand how it worked. The space is also very small and you feel very on top of the people next to you. They have live music and it's kind of unenjoyable because you're directly next to the speaker in most of the tables you could sit at. Overall, we were pretty disappointed. We have never left a restaurant so quickly. We were probably there for an entirety of 20 minutes and rushed out. read more

The one star is for the meat because it's amazing. Firstly it's winter time and everyone has their coats on because they don't turn on the heater. It's freezing in here and all the food on the buffet is warm not hot. From the time I put it on my plate, got the meat, weighed it, and got to the table everything on my plate was cold. The food is weighed so the numbers add up quickly and by myself I spent $17 with a can soda which I found expensive considering all I had on my plate was rice, beans, salad, and the meat. I have been going to Brazilian restaurants for 20 years and I would have to say that it is hard to find a bad Brazilian restaurant, but Chalanas is very bad! The hot food at the salad bar was cold. In fact, the restaurant itself was cold. I guess they wanted to save money on the heating bill. The barbeque meat was so tough that I could not eat most of it. I was only able to swallow the sausages. They were obviously using very low quality meat. There was a waitress, but she never came to me to ask if I needed anything. One plate of food and one alcoholic drink cost me $20! I can't understand how anyone gave this restaurant a good review.
