Challah has a window at Woodlands Tavern, so that's what I'm reviewing, but it sounds like it's the same stuff as on the truck. Lots of sandwiches on the menu, but I wanted bar food, to go, so I got some pastrami wings to start. Good wings, not great- pastrami spices, fairly meaty, not bad. I also got fried brussels sprouts. Yowza! Small sprouts, fried in, I believe, brown sugar and prosecco. So, a little sweet, a little sour, very good. Finally, some schmaltz potatoes. I wasn't sure if they'd be mashed or what; they were essentially potato wedges, but the best potato wedges I have ever had. Soft inside, a bit crispy outside, great fatty flavor with a little salt. Man, they were good. I'd go back here, or the truck, to explore the menu. They know what they're doing. read more

Awesome. Perfect way to start the weekend, with a day off and a music filled night. This time here for a gig for my man's band, Plow Horse. We have been waiting to play at this venue for awhile. Come here all the time for shows and wanted to get our foot in the door, to be able to play this venue again. I guess I should start out with some general info. Challah is actually located inside Woodlands Tavern. I will definitely be back to Woodlands if not for the food it will be for the beer and their happy hour prices. But the food was incredible. It was hard to believe that it came from a bar. We shared our food of course. We got the Crispy Chicken Sandwich and the Greg's Pastrami Wings which are brined, dry rubbed & smoked. Both were insanely great and are worth coming back for again and again. Which of course we will do. It also helps that this location is just around the corner from my job. I could actually walk to it from my work building, but I usually don't. I would be interested in knowing if there is still a food truck that goes around. I am only aware of the location at Woodlands. Please update your website with updated info on this for your customers & to get new ones. Some people do not visit bar or establishments that serve alcohol, yes believe it or not. Challah's been around for a little while now, and they've really done a good job of improving their menu over the years, either by adding new items or dropping ones that weren't working. I had read about this truck a couple years ago and stopped in (They're at Seventh Son all the time) then to try out the chicken sandwich, since I'd heard from a couple people saying how good it was. I did, and it was very good, if not a bit too salty for my liking. The ladies working were really nice and really seemed to enjoy running the place. Fast forward to last week, and I've had Challah on numerous occasions and have tried all types of things on the menu from the salmon sandwiches to goat belly tacos. I brought my buddy down to the Columbus Commons food court, and he decided he wanted to try the chicken sandwich, since I'd talked it up for so long. We both had it along with the Schmaltz potatoes, which are boiled potatoes that they break down and then cook in the chicken fat and what tasted like vinegar. I remember the chicken being one piece the first time I had Challah, but now they have it sliced pretty thin and breaded and fried that way. It gives a whole bunch of crunch, and it actually wasn't as salty anymore. There is a lot of fried batter, so beware, but it is very tasty. It was my first time having Schmaltz potatoes, and those were on a whole other level. Man, they were delicious. I couldn't tell what the dipping sauce was (like a fluffy sour scream mixed with dill), but it went with it really well. My buddy and I both really loved those. Challah is another Columbus food truck staple nowadays, and if you're looking to get another take on a Friday chicken sandwich that's not Hot Chicken, then this is the place to do it. My old roommate thought it was the best chicken sandwich in Columbus, and it is pretty damn good; however, they're also putting out all kinds of delicious food and not just chicken. I so wanted to love this place! I wanted to say "Challah made me Holla!". I heart food trucks and supporting local. I waited thirty minutes outside of the Seventh Son Brewery (w/Hibiscus Beer in hand) to taste the cuisine and I am sorely wishing for those thirty minutes back (albeit I met two pretty cool guys in line). I will start with the good...the Challah was standard Jewish Challah and pretty good. The Corned Beef on Challah was surprisingly decent and had the most flavor out of the three samplings I had. I would recommend this only if you are drinking and the truck is the only food truck present. You get three sliders sandwiches for ten bucks, which you can mix & match from the menu which is relatively small being there are six items. They ran out of Potato Latkes while I was in line, but one of the guys behind me let me still a bite of his. I''ll advise below. My biggest disappointment...the Crispy Chicken Sandwich on Challah: The sandwich looked beautiful perfectly golden and crispy, but upon taking a bite I got a mouth full of boring!!!! I was anticipating (after the additional wait of 15 mins for my food to be ready) a burst of flavor and spice, but got bland and lackluster. My advice keep the sandwich, but for gods sake add some seasoning! Next the Smoked Fish on Challah: Arrrgh....If you wanted to sadden me further you indeed get an applause! Seriously???? This was like the mother in law's specialty that everyone avoids at every function. Yet again, did we run out of seasoning or creativity? I wanted to run back to the truck and attack the Chef by throwing Season All or at least some Mrs. Dash. I did get the opinions of three random (white trendster guys) about the food as they ordered the same selection as myself. Two of the guys who were in a hurry to meet friends after the wait thought the food was good. The opinion that matters the most was the Random Gay Guy!!!!! He literally took the words out of my mouth and said "....this is BORING and mediocre!" So true... I hope that they at least improve on the seasoning and have some one taste the food that has working taste buds. I would really like them to succeed. read more

What I look for in a new restaurant is a food choice that I would not make for myself at home or a food that is so memorable I specifically crave it. At Challah! I am happy to report that I found both. First, I would never think pare a roasted beet with ricotta cheese, then add a bun and pickled onions. It's an inspired sandwich. Their chicken salad sandwich was great. It's legit white and dark meat pulled straight for the chicken (not literal, but you get the picture). Plenty of it, to add. A very small amount of mayo used - a double-plus! Fresh dill. Those simple flavors, meshed with the sweet Hawaiian Kings esque soft bun was awesome! The slivers of purple onion and a few pickle slices dressed it up good and dandy. Interesting setup: there's no proper counter to order at. One of the best parts of the way the Columbus mobile food scene is growing is that you're starting to find complete surprises. I'd heard this truck was getting started, but didn't know they were ready to go. While out at Gallery Hop, I was thrilled to bump into the Challah truck at one of the Short North parking lots, particularly since the lines at several other Short North mainstays were out the door. I went for a roast beef sandwich, served with a spicy, tangy horseradish slaw that was maybe a little TOO strong, but still tasted great. I also tried their seasonal peach fritters, which came out hot, sweet, and fluffy without being greasy or too heavy. My only (relatively minor) complaint aside from the slaw is the pickle. I paid $1 for a pickle with my order, and expected a large deli style pickle, and got a really small pickle spear instead. A little disappointing, all things considered. read more

Between this and rumors of Chicken & Waffles ice cream, I was beyond intrigued when I approached the truck on a recent Sunday. I don't know, I haven't eaten every chicken sandwich in town (yet), but they're damn close. So I have been waiting on something exciting to bring me out of my Yelp Review retirement and Challah has done exactly that. Being that I work third shift I was not too pleased to have to take my dear grandmother to the hospital for an early morning appointment. Well God smiled upon me today, perhaps for my good deed. And he rewarded me with the Challah truck. While leaving out of the hospital I spotted it and noticed a decent amount of people waiting to get food from them. So I walked over and checked out the menu, and the first item was Fried Crispy Chicken (my Kryptonite) I immediately got in line, not even knowing it was a sandwich. I also ordered the fried mashed potatoes with fancy ranch. The cashier was a true pro, she was very kind while taking my order. Upon ringing me out she hit me with the "you smell really good, what are you wearing?" This put a huge smile on my face and I had to tip her for great sense of smell. By the way I had on Paco Rabonne's 1 Million aka the Lady Killer. But back to the review. I got in my car and the presentation was very simple but nice. When I picked up the sandwich I noticed the softly breaded bun. The first bite of this chicken masterpiece was orgasmic!!! The chicken was fried to perfection the mayo ratio was perfect and my love for food was resurrected by this Holy Chicken Savior. I could not pull off without finishing it. The sandwich was so amazingly good I didn't realize it was still piping hot, and I have the burnt skin on the roof of my mouth to prove it. The mashed potatoes were a nice compliment to the sandwich, however my only complaint was the "fancy ranch." Let's just say it wasn't so fancy. Delicious and willing to accommodate! My wife and I were at the Whitehall Food Truck and Fun Festival and this was the first time I'd heard of the Challah truck. Very happy with their food and extremely happy with their willingness to make it up on the fly. I couldn't decide to get the tomato and arugula sandwich or the salmon... so one of the owners suggested I combine the two and zippity zam - a new sandy appeared in no time flat. Full of taste and perfect accompaniment to the Yuengling on a fun summer food fest night, the salmon with arugula was just the comfort food needed to close the night. Had a chance to check out Challah for lunch today. I went with the whitefish sandwich. The main ingredient is shredded smoked whitefish, with lots of dill, mixed together with a small amount of mayonnaise. It's presented on what I believe is a good eggy bun with a fried latke and large slice of pickled beet. The way it all came together felt like something was still missing. I easily tasted the dill and the smokiness came through, but everything, including the beet, was mild in flavor. I would have liked something rich, vibrant, spicy, or maybe even a sweeter flavor from the beet to have come through. I thought about putting the accompanying coleslaw in the sandwich, but it was a little bland too. Texture-wise the latke did a good job of adding crunch to accompany the softer ingredients. Total cost for the meal excluding drink and a small tip was $9. One of my coworkers spoke highly of the chicken sandwich he had, and another said the reuben was solid. I've been wanting to try Challah, but each time we've gone to Seventh Son in the recent past, we've been coming from brunch. Each time I kick myself when I see the Challah truck and also have a full belly. Finally tried it yesterday. I got the Smoked Salmon on Rye and the schmaltz potatoes. My husband got the Paul Reuben. My sandwich was packed full of tender smoked salmon. It also had a dill-caper cream cheese, fresh cucumber slices, and fried red onions. What a nice surprise. The schmaltz potatoes were hot and crispy on the outside and tender on the inside. My husband's sandwich was stuffed with tender corned beef. He absolutely loved it and he is a meat snob. My only small complaint is that 2 sandwiches and a side of potatoes cost me $26 not including tip. A bit pricey, but glad I tried it. Definitely a nice food truck option to have at the brewery for Sunday brunch! read more

I had this truck for the first time at Land Grant about a week ago. I got the brisket sandwich and let me tell you what.. I'VE DREAMT ABOUT IT EVER SINCE. I asked for the truck-made pickles on it and that was a genius idea. The sandwich was huge. The buttered grilled bread was heaven. The brisket was PERFECT. It fell apart and practically melted in my mouth. It was dripping all down my arms and I didn't care who saw me lick it off (wow this is getting graphic). And don't even get me started on the people. The owner of this truck was so sweet. On this particular day, it was her sisters birthday. She printed out a photo of her sister and taped it to a wooden spoon and took photos of customers with the cut-out to send to her sister. I ate my brisket with the owners (cut-out) sister 10 minutes after meeting her. If you haven't tried Challah, I don't know what you're doing with your life. read more

Reviews sometimes have a context and so it is here. Challah started trucking on June 30, 2013 at its Grand Opening a point omitted from other reviews. The truck is silver and very well painted. The food offering for this day consisted of s sampling of 3 sandwich teases accompanied by some splendid sides -- a preview of the menu that will be available down the road. No Grand Opening in the food business proceeds without some missed opportunities. Yet, this truck is off to a very good start and is one to watch in the days ahead. The Challah concept is great, the truck owners are talented and their credentials provide a foundation for the promising growth and evolution that is forecasted by the Grand Opening. We enjoy food from Challah almost weekly; the truck is at the Twisted Vine in Grandview on Friday evenings. You'll be tempted to order the entire menu as we have done multiple times. The menu changes weekly and features locally sourced food prepared on the truck by the super friendly owners. How items are prepared varies but never disappoints. The crispy chicken sandwich is my favorite, the latkes were prepared to order this week and I always regret only getting one order of the fritters (would make an awesome breakfast if I could actually refrain from inhaling them.)
