Went in with my kids to check the place out. Lou definitely has fresh seafood and live blue crabs. They were extremely fresh and feisty. I bought several crab cakes to try out their freshness. I made my own remoulade sauce and they were excellent! Lou is extremely forward with his sales and pride in the freshness of his product. You will be smelling all of his fish before you leave with it. However, you won't be disappointed. Prices are higher than chain stores however, you get what you pay for.... If you can find cheaper truly clean, none chemically treated, FRESH fish, chances are you went back to nature and caught it yourself. I'm from the Annapolis MD area so my standards for seafood are higher than a seagull on Red Bull. The shrimp was So fresh I was worried one was going to leap off the plate, file taxes, and start a family. The crab legs? Absolute weapons of mass deliciousness. And the whole Dungeness crab? Let's just say if I ever get stranded on a desert island, I want this crab to be my volleyball companion, because we'd never be apart. Seriously, steam, boil, whatever, but once you cracked 'em open, it was like Poseidon himself whispered, "You chose wisely." I'd been on a failed scavenger hunt across Houston Texas looking for crab legs, striking out left and right, and honestly, I'm now glad I failed everywhere else because destiny clearly led me here. Got a 4 pound salmon fillet, owner said straight from Norway. I am so impressed. This fish is absolutely perfect. He said it was never frozen and I'm still not sure I can believe that (I thought they freeze them all), but even if it was frozen at some point it doesn't matter because it's the best. We lived in south Louisiana before we moved to Houston and there was always fresh seafood. Whether it was a relative, a neighbor, or a friend, someone was always going fishing in the Gulf. Always bringing home flounder, redfish, and if we were lucky, shrimp right off the boat. There were even people selling fresh shrimp from ice chests on the street. We've never been able to duplicate the freshness in Houston. That is, until yesterday when we stumbled across Champions Seafood Market. Lou ( the owner) was super friendly. We bought a few pounds of fresh off the boat shrimp and while he was wrapping it up, he told us he spent many years in Baltimore as a seafood distributor and made his own crab cakes the way he had them in Baltimore. Not much better on a nice fall day than a Maryland crab cake and I bought three plus his remoulade. I cooked the crab cakes tonight and they were so good, it was almost like sitting on the Inner Harbor on a cool night. If you get a chance, go tell Lou "hi" and buy some seafood - for sure buy a few crab cakes. You won't be disappointed. read more

Thank you to all before me who wrote a review. I carefully read each review and comments wherein to formulate my initial impressions. I am skeptical of the 1* review on FB. Having read it and the polite response in return, it is clear to me that that particular review should be disregarded. It is apparent that individual is blaming poor cooking skills on the merchant. This is most evident when she writes that the fish smelled bad after being cooked. If it wasn't fresh, you would have smelled it before cooking. Be that as it may, I have come to this location 3 times already. Twice just for shrimp and a 3rd for fish. At each visit, he has been more than patient with me and my questions. His advice remains spot-on and he tries to accommodate my diet requests to the best of his knowledge. I am a keto eater that focuses on higher protein to fat ratio. He conveniently lists his fish on his page, so I look up the macros before purchase. Thanks to him, I tried cooking halibut for the first time and am craving my parmesan crusted version. I love to try new things, which have led me to eat wahoo, halibut, and even swordfish! I typically snag at least 3 lbs of shrimp, too! BTW, if you want to know how fresh something is BEFORE you buy, he will gladly teach you and let you see for yourself. He also shares interesting videos, some including "how to" filet. You can call in morning and pick up by evening already deshelled and deveined shrimp for a small additional cost. All of that said, I am never buying my fish anywhere else again. My fiancé, who never cooks since I'm the chef in this house, surprised me this past Sunday with a BBQ and friends coming over. To my surprise, Sunday he came in the house from the garage where he was hiding (properly thankfully) some amazing seafood. It was a few pounds of fresh tuna and huge shrimp. I don't eat meat so seafood is my BBQ. From the smell, touch, texture I could tell it was amazing quality! When I asked where it was from, since I haven't got my hands on such fresh seafood since moving out here a year ago, he said this place. So my face went from horrified as I hate surprises to instant excitement and ready to get the grill on! The third part of my Sunday surprise was the fiancé cooking-- also instant fear. But I have to say because it was so fresh, he just season it lightly and all 10 of us enjoyed it! He said the owner was extremely nice and helpful. Will definitely be returning! The owner insisted on me smelling fish fillets prior to purchasing to show how it has no smell because it is so fresh. He packed fillets in a bag with ice. It took me 15 minutes to get home and put the fish in the refrigerator. Later the same day I took the fish out to cook... the smell was unbearable. He must have swapped those fillets. It did not just have strong fish smell, it was rotten! Needless to say I will never walk into Champions Seafood Market again. read more

I cant believe I have lived on the north side my whole life and am just NOW finding out about Champions Seafood Market. After walking in the door and being greeted with a smile and hello from the owner, I was awestruck at the vibrant colors of the shrimp and seafood! Definitely not the dull, grey, shrimp in the grocers counter. These bad boys are HUGE and full of color! The fish variety definitely puts the grocery store to shame as well. There is nothing better than eating fish that was swimming the night before, and that is what you get from Joselu! Not to mention, the free education on the fish, where its from, what pairs with what, and the overall friendly banter that goes with each visit. WOW, my wife and I had used them before but a recent article in the Houstonian magazine ranked them as the top seafood monger on the north side. The shrimp we had list night and the tuna were so fresh we will not buy HEB again! Prices are well worth it. Heard a customer say the crab cakes were good and if not they sell lump crab meat as well.
