They had their "A" team working on Saturday night when we walked in without a reservation and had a really nice experience and lovely food. We were staying at the Inn and were too tired to branch out on Sunday night. Also, we really wanted to get their salad again, and were keen to try their burgers. Well Sunday night the A team was not working. Place was empty and the service was slow and poor. The food was ok but not nearly as good as the night before when they were packed. The margarita flight with 3 margaritas set the dinner off. My husband and I shared it. Drinks were strong and tasty. I had the clam chowder which was a nice size bowl of clam chowder. It had a slightly tart taste which surprised me for clam chowder. It had plenty of clams and potatoes for a dinner. My husband got the Beef Short Ribs and it came with mashed potatoes and zucchini and shredded carrots - flavorful, moist, and delicious. The Bailey's Affogato dessert was a stand out. It came with a shot of Bailey's Irish Cream, scoop of vanilla ice cream, and a shot of espresso. My husband violated the affogatos rules and enjoyed each part separately. This was the most appalling experience out in my adult life. We were left sitting for over an hour after we ordered, two burgers and a fried fish sandwich. When i finally asked about thr status of our order because it has been over an hour, i was barely acknowledged by the bartender and brushed off as impatient. The restaurant was barely full and the staff lacked the competence to ensure all orders actually were placed. Then a young lady came over, not the manager or the bar tender, and told me the kitchen "lost our order" and she just "didn't know what happened." As a former server, i can tell you what happened, the bar tender couldn't be bothered to actually place our order and then didn't bother to tell or care customers were sitting and waiting. I guess maybe they only serve 55 and older community at this place because all the older tables seemed to get perfectly fine service. We were stopping for quick meal on our way to the airport from vermont and were given terrible service and no food. I cannot recommend you going ANYWHERE ELSE hard and fast enough. I am disgusted by the customer service snd lack of professionalism. This message is to your staff DO BETTER. read more

Not what I expected. For a restaurant. Small menu and a huge place with one very unhappy bartender. Took forever to get a glass of wine. Watched it sit there for ten minutes because there is only one poor girl being a happy waitress. Staff didn't really help to clear tables either. Food; meh. I got the chicken pot pie. How do you mess that up. Well..... an abundance of oregano. The cream was green! And had a funk taste. So much so my guy that eats everything. Didn't. Mac and cheese. App sized and pulled pork was not to be found. If you go in winter, where a tee shirt. Was so hot in there for the "mostly elderly" that go there. Cute old town. Beautiful inn. We ordered wine and the waitress got the wrong wine for my husband. She took care of that and got the correct wine. We ordered our meals and salads as appetizers. The whole meal and salads came out at the same time and we complained. She took the meals back to reheat as we waited for quite awhile. The food was very good when it came. The manager offered to give 20 percent off of the meals for the mix up with the wine and the fact that the salad came out with the meal. We got the bill and we were charged $60 for 2 glasses of house Cabernet Sauvignon. We spoke up about that and the bill was adjusted for the house wine over charge but never received the adjustment for the 20 percent that we were promised for all the the other mess ups. The BEST (only) place to get fresh oysters in Franklin county on Wednesday nights! We found excellent oysters in the quintessential New England Old Deerfield Inn! Our server, Amanda, was very attentive and made sure to check in without being overbearing. We ordered a dozen of both the Well fleet and Cadillac oysters and they DID NOT DISAPPOINT! We were seduced by the lamb chop appetizer which came with goat cheese and an arugula salad. Not to be missed! I try to avoid leaving negative reviews. But this experience was sooooo bad. Will never return. If you do go read the bill very carefully. Saturday night dinner in early January. 2 side salads, 2 fish and chips, 1 tuna special, and a falafel sandwich, 3 cocktails, 5 glasses of wine, 2 desserts, and 1 coffee: total before tip $304. This was not fancy dining, food was okay, but not exceptional. And service was subpar. We were charged $28 per glass for 3 glasses of Jordan Russian River Chardonnay (listed on menu at 18). Didn't notice this until now. Waitstaff were overwhelmed and uncaring. Main dishes came before salads, had to ask for them, the falafel sandwich got lost, we finally had to go fetch after asking and waiting 15 mins. Wonderful experience! They had a soup special that was similar to a beef stew. We both really enjoyed it. I had the fried haddock sandwich with fries. Everything was great. Our waiter was the bar tender and he kept everything moving smoothly without us feeling rushed. This restaurant is located in the Deerfield Inn right in the town of Deerfield Massachusetts. It's an old hotel, very well maintained. Our original reason for being there was to visit the Yankee Candle Flagship store. If you're in the area, be sure to try this restaurant out! read more

Surprisingly good Caesar salad, burger! Have stopped here when out biking in the valley. They accommodate cyclists outside on the sunken terrace if you order upstairs at the hostess stand even if not serving outside (due to hours or whatever). I would like to commend the entire facility and atmosphere of the Deerfield Inn and Champney's tavern. We brought my wife brother and sister-in-law here; they both are native New Englanders who now live in Baltimore. We have been trying to woo them back home. When Brian asked if we needed anything, I told him I had left my phone in the car (love the to take pics of my meals) , he went out and got it for me. We were told we had to ask for it which is fine but any one with any class would offer and allow us to decline rather than to put the burden on us to ask. Especially while waiting over an hour for our meals. Similarly we had to ask for sugar and subsequently for a teaspoon to accompany our tea. The good - the food was generally good and came quickly for a Saturday night. The beer list was very good for a restaurant. The bad - the prices were quite high for what you got. I ordered a pasta entree for nearly $30 and didn't get a salad or bread beforehand. The mussels came with one small piece of crostini and I was charged $1.50 for a 2nd piece of bread. The Brussel sprouts were $16 and came in a tiny 4"x4" basket. I couldn't believe we paid that much for a few sprouts. Conclusion: Okay food, but not worth the money. read more

This is an incredible venue in a beautiful old historic hotel in the beautiful, historic village of Deerfield MA. The restaurant is beautifully renovated & full of charm. Our food items were delicious & beautifully presented. The servers were young but very professional. The manager came by twice to check on our meals. This beautiful restaurant is SO worth the visit. There's a cute museum shop & gift shop right next door. We just had a disappointing lunch at Champney's. My wife and I both had bowls of clam chowder ($12) that were little more than chunky potato soup with virtually no clam flavor and only a few tiny clam pieces. I suggested to the manager that he try today's chowder and he apologized and said he would, but I never heard from him again and no adjustment was made to our check. I also had a plate of Belgian truffle fries ($14). Belgian fries are twice fried at different temperatures and are supposed to be soft in the middle and crispy on the outside. These were simply soft and limp. My wife's Caesar salad would have been better if the hard white stems of the Romaine hadn't made up half the salad. In a tourist-centric environment like this, there will always be new customers to replace those like us who will not be returning. read more

We recommend here a million times over. The staff is so friendly- if you're local they always remember you. This place have been apart of my fiancé and I's love story as it is the place we ate before she asked me to be her gf and the place she asked me to be before she asked me to marry her. In the summer you can dine on the porch and in the winter the inside is decorated to look like a Hallmark movie. We were in town to visit Yankee Candle but were very pleased to come here for a weekend lunch. Champney's features a relaxed atmosphere in the inn in historic Deerfield. Our waiter kept the good vibes going with his fun attitude and attentiveness. I ate one of the specials, a veggie melt. It was very drippy but that was a product of so many fresh veggies jammed in there. I ate it in one go to reduce the mess, no regrets! My life absolutely loved her steak sandwich. It was everything it should have been - hearty and flavorful. The bar offered about 12 local brews on tap plus a lot of bottles. Flights are available for $9 for 5 beers at 4 oz each. Love that. Champney's is a spot in the quaint old Deerfield area a short jaunt from nearby Magic Wings Butterfly conservatory we were visiting the same day with family. Family members said it was good so we decided to give it a go. Inside is nice, old inn historic with wallpaper style with bar and surrounding tables and a few booths, we had a nice circular booth. Service was a bit slow, but friendly. The nearby bar was a bit loud with people for lunch. We all ordered drinks- decent craft local and otherwise beer selection and drink menu. Our beers were excellent. Sangria my wife had tasted awful, had to send it back, but our waitress took it off our bill which was the right thing to do. For lunch my father in-law and I had chicken pot pie, which was quite small and more of a liquidity milky stew, wanted a little more veggies, meat and crust in there! My wife's veggie burger and fries were above average and would order again. All in all I would say our meal was missing the size portion wise and quality for the price point, but I'd give it another shot if I was back in the area. read more

We sat at the bar, but there is plenty of seating at tables in several rooms. On first glance, it looks formal, but it is very welcoming and cozy. All of the staff were pleasant & professional. There is a full bar. We are craft beer drinkers and were pleased to see about a dozen offerings, featuring local brews. Janie had a nice Vienna Lager from Hitchcock Brewing. I chose a delicious English Brown from The People's Pint. Our dinners were exceptionally good. Janie had a burger with cheddar cheese and shrooms. It came out medium rare with plenty of pink and juicy, just like ordered. The burger came with the usual lettuce, tomatoes, pickles and pickled onions. The bun was soft & fresh. Her fries were standard. I had the Mac & Cheese special which had broccoli and bacon in it. It came out steaming hot in a crock and was probably one of the best Mac&Cheeses I ever had (and I've had lots!). So creamy and delicious! Our server, Rick, was very friendly and attentive. He sold us on the Indian Pudding that came with vanilla ice cream. We shared it and did not regret ordering it-thanks Rick! I have been a fan of the Deerfield Inn for 30 + years. First as a student, then a parent and now a retired traveler. the hospitality continues to be a trademark, but regrettably the food has reached an all-time low. We ordered four distinctly different entrees. The fish was clearly a previously frozen slab. The Pot Pie was a scoop of watery stew labeled into a tiny bowl with a deflated puff pastry floating on top. The vegetarian salad was simple chopped escarole. My clam chowder had been pureed in a blender. Everyone at the table had a "bad meal". It was supposed to be a "special family meal" , but it was tarnished by poorly prepared food. Great location, wonderful place, BUT...the food was not great. I get the impression that they cook things half way in anticipation of needing it later, then attempt to finish cooking it once ordered. The result is leather on the outside, rare to raw and definitely cold in the inside. I ordered with a side of mashed potatoes--it was awful. Liquid potato swill with lumps in it as if it had been previously eaten and... Absolutely terrible. What a shame. Prices are up there with the best of restaurants, but too bad the food isn't. Even though we returned at least one order, it was not removed from the bill. People are nice though, and the service is okay but not outstanding. I've taken guests there twice with the same results. Came here on a Friday night. Very friendly and attentive staff. Well done. I ordered a cocktail special and was warned it would be very very spicy, and they asked if I wanted to cut it down. I did, they served it, and it was still too hot. My waitress brought me a club soda to cut it. Nope. Still too spicy, and I like spicy usually. Anyhow, I dunno. I was more amused than anything else but it is probably time to retire this drink. If you have to warn the customers, that's never a good thing. On to dinner... We both got Caesar salads that were good. They even offer anchovies, which was nice. We requested lemon for them, and it elevated the salads. She got fish and chips. Sadly, the batter was greasy, but the fish inside was glistening and perfectly cooked. French fries were limp and pretty much left on the plate. Darn. I got the macaroni and cheese.
