Chances is a staple in this community. Food is always fresh (try the spinach salad with hot bacon dressing). Staff works hard and they definitely want their customers happy. Tge chicken breast smothered with peppers, mushrooms and onions with melted pepper Jack is my go to entree. No gluten free buns, however it's great as a stand alone. Husband says burgers are very good and loves that they have crinkle cuts fries. read more

The food at Chances is mediocre at best. Maybe the owners feel that because they are the only restaurant in Rochester that they don't have to go above and beyond with their food and their service. Nice waitresses. Exhorbitantly priced wine. Every lunch "special" just screams "recycled" Call me a food snob - OK, I don't care, but I know good food when I eat it. For the life of me I cannot understand the good reviews for this place. HOWEVER I admit - the fish fry at dinner on Friday is very good. And the ambiance is pretty cute - old timey bar/food joint. I always get both steak & lobster because they know how to cook lobster perfectly & the garlic butter dip is perfection! Scallops are a close second.... Their spinach salad with hot bacon dressing is OH. MY. GOD. delicious! Their desserts are so good, even if we are taking home leftovers and would normally decline dessert, we INSIST on taking dessert home to eat later - SOOOO worth it! I don't drink the brandy old fashioned but the fam says they are really good as well - homemade recipe we are told. They are in the Wisconsin supper club category, including a good old haunting in the building. For Vday, they always have a strawberries & chamagne drink which hits perfectly. Best ribs i have tasted in Wisconsin. Meat falls off the bone. Great sauce! Also have great steaks and an excellent fish fry on fridays. Historic landmark building and great staff. We found Chances about 5 or 6 years ago in one of the Lake Geneva's dining publications. Best place around for you Friday night Fish Fry!!! We ore old-time Fish Fry people, (anyone remember Gollwitzer's???). Well worth the drive from Lake Geneva. Always fantastic fried and broiled fish. Last night was exceptional! The waitress was amazing- fast, attentive and very friendly. The food was good, not the best. I picked Reuben Rolls for an appetizer. They were pretty one-note. All I could taste was cheese. Not sauerkraut, not even the corned beef. The thousand island dressing helps to add a little tang, but these were a little disappointing. For dinner I ordered the baked cod. The flavor was really good but the fish was juuuust on the edge of overcooked. Lemon and drawn butter helped, but without those additions it would have been too dry. I liked the supper club feel of the place. I really miss that. But I would have preferred a small relish tray versus cheese and crackers. Those were a great pre-dinner snack, but it's easy to quickly fill up on the crackers. I'd like to say I'll be back to try out more menu options, but the fact that they charge a 3% credit card fee is a real turn-off. read more

BF and I decided to take a "chance" on Chances and we are glad that we did! I'm a huge prime rib fan so I was excited to check out their "Prime Rib Saturday" specials. We loved our experience and the food was decent as well. Notes: 1) Make sure to make a reservation. We came on a Saturday night and had about a 40 minute wait. The dining area is super cute with white linen tables and candles. It was worth the wait. 2) Specials: BF had the all-you-can-eat rib special. He ate a lot of ribs and the ribs were delicious and great for the price. 3) Chili: my favorite chili ever is the bf's homemade chili but I will say that the chili at Chances is a close second. It has a homemade taste and they sometimes have it for Sunday Packers games. 4) Service: We had the most amazing waitress who was not only attentive but very sweet. She made great recommendations and was enthusiastic and very kind. 5) Prime Rib: To be honest it wasn't my favorite. It was just okay and I've definitely had better. The presentation was beautiful and the potatoes were tasty! The meat? It was just okay. However the amazing service and incredible chili will definitely entice me back to Chances! read more

What a great little gem in downtown Rochester. I was here about 24 years ago when I lived in the area and it was a great experience once again. Tom is a great hospitable bartender and humorous host. Had a few drinks at the bar before our reservation and chatted. We were sat punctually and taken very good care of by Carol. Started out with the cream of potato soup and cheesy broccoli soup. Delish. Spinach salad with hot bacon dressing was also very good. My 2 guests had the filet and ribs and they both loved it. I had the steak au poirve with garlic pasta, which is a peppercorn crusted filet pan seared with a brandy Dijon cream sauce. It was phenomenal! Coming back from a trip to Colorado and thought I'd give the place a try on my way into Racine. Looked up their hours and it said 9 pm. With all the road construction I was in their door at 821. Was informed that the kitchen was already shut down. Oh dang, I went out of my way to finally try this place,and it's a no go. Ok, well I get it. But then was told I could take something quick to go. What? If the kitchen is closed, it's closed right? How can I get an order to go?. No my guess is the wait staff was closed. If you are going to stop seating at a certain time, let people know so they don't go out of their way to try you. I was mildly irrated all the way back to Racine. But oh well. We had reservations last weekend and got our table right away. It was in the back corner though and the waitresses sat at table next to us folding napkins. The tablecloth has a cheap plastic covering that really hurts any ambiance. We were told no breadsticks anymore but they can bring ritz crackers and no bread or rolls! I had a steak that was good . The salad was uninspiring-wilted lettuce with barely any vegies. We enjoy wine with a nice dinner but don't plan to drink wine here, it was terrible. When we asked for wine list we we were told there was not one, just red or white. Also the busboy and waitress circled our table every couple minutes wanting to clear, it made us so anxious. I felt rushed. I will not be going back which is too bad as the food has been decent in the past. read more

Tom and his crew do an awesome job of making you feel at home in this great establishment. The drinks are generous and taste amazing and the food is the best in the area! Their fish fry is so good, and they make homemade potato pancakes! Not greasy at all. The baked cod is so delicious and not dry. Baked to perfection! But the weekly dinner specials are great and really reasonable. Their fried chicken is the absolute best I've ever had. Crispy and moist, flavorful and tasty!!! Love this place. We dined at Chances on a Saturday night in March 2024. . Lots of local townspeople having a good time in bar area. I am all for that type of atmosphere. However, if your face is not familiar, the bartenders tend to ignore you. There were two mature guys on duty behind the bar and if you did not specifically call out or gesture for a cocktail, they simply stood there. Grumpy as all get out. Two delightful elderly females (not familiar faces) tried to get a bartender's attention to ask about the gambling games in the room, but were very disrespectfully ignored. We'll write this off as both fellas having a bad night. Dining room was about half full. Got seated at a very small table for two against the wall...maybe a former window table, but no window anymore. Very cramped with all the extra stuff already on the table. Didn't want to be a pain in the ***, so we didn't request a nicer table. Good news...ribs and shrimp combo and prime rib special were delicious. Spinach salad and onion strings also very tasty. Extremely busy waitress took care of us skillfully, attentively, and with the most pleasant demeanor. So our occasional date night had a happy ending following a not so great start. read more

Last visit they served a very fatty, gristle filled steak and could not get the double thick pork chop to cook thoroughly. Took 3 tries and was still raw in the middle. Chances has great food! My parents moved to Florida last year and every time they come home, my mom has to grab lunch at Chances for their steak sandwich. It is so tender and flavorful. Attention! Attention! This is home to the best burgers in the country! Yep - right in lil ole Rochester, WI. We just moved to one of the greatest culinary cities (San Francisco) and I have yet to find a burger as good as Chances. They are huge, made to order with yummy fresh bread. Order it with a side of soup and you will be unbuttoning your pants. It is a smoky old building built in 1843 that is supposedly home to several local ghosts. Make no mistake - it is a local dive. Most people in the bigger cities of Racine or Kenosha had never heard of this place so it is true hidden gem. Food was delicious. Filet was cooked perfectly. Very tender. Fried Walleye (not the fish fry) included two large portions for $17. Both included potato and soup or salad. Two soups. Two salad choices. So so wine list and cheap at $5.75. Onion straw appetizer was huge for $7. Salad dressings delicious. Side salads are a bit small though. Server was quick but didn't come back often. Wish I could've had another drink but no one offered. Also more of that soft delicious marble rye. Cheese spread was probably canned and crackers in packages unnecessary. White tablecloths and candles. At 7 pm it was jam packed. By 8:15 nearly empty. Mostly families. Pretty loud. Can't hear music. Old building. Cozy space. Smaller bar. Took awhile to get the check then a long time for someone to process it. Overall 4 stars. read more

Chances it a fun place to go to on the weekends to get away from Fastfood. Yes they have burgers (That are Quite Good!) but their chicken and ribs are something to try and remember. The staff are nice and some have even told the history of the place, which includes a dance floor above the restaurant and some "Special" guests that "Appear" out of no where. It has a Supper Club feel to it and I recently tried the weekday dinners which where quite reasonable. read more
