This use to be my favorite Chinese Restaurant, but no longer and here's why! At 6:00pm on Tuesday, February 11, 2014 I witnessed a mouse approximately 4 inches in size run across the floor inside the restaurant of Chang Bros next to where I was sitting and ran up a plant directly behind our booth. I immediately stopped eating my dinner and told my friend we had to leave now! I immediately went and paid my bill, told the waitress what I had seen and her reply was "We know it happens all the time because there is a field behind our restaurant"! I will never eat here again as I have never experience anything like this in my entire life. There may be a field behind this establishment but they are coming in because this place in not clean and they are not properly storing and cleaning this restaurant! Found Chang Bros while looking for something that was open late. Service was quick, courteous and attentive. They didn't try to rush me even though I came in late and I was the last to leave. Food was fantastic. Much better than the Panda Express I've had to eat until I found this place. The wife and I got the Family A special. Good size portions. There was enough food for us to have leftovers for the next day as well. Can't go wrong with the price! It was more reasonable than the Chinese food I find in Los Angeles. Ok so while my husband now wants to leave me for their sweet and sour soup... the service was AWFUL!!!!! Food was delish.. but come on who hired the server..?? So we sit down- I order a merlot (witch by the way is called Merlot Sake??) The server looks at me and says "I need to see your ID" Me being only 25 and looking much younger I always get carded and didn't mind. She then reads my birth date out loud asking how old I am because I "look way too young"... I'm sorry but I find it rude when servers have the need to say things like that. I mean if its a fake ID and I'm 19 you think I'm going to order a Merlot at 5:30 with dinner..? No. Ok so I let it slide... Did I forget to add that we were the only ones in the restaurant meaning.. the service should be good. So they bring out the appetizers, and where are our drinks?? The server is sitting down at a table greeting those coming in to get take out.. after re-filling our water twice I finally say "Can you please bring our drinks.." And she actually replies with "Ya- I know" WOW. So after watching her sit down again to chit chat.. our food comes out.. FINALLY we get our drinks. Once again my brother Yelpers have led me down the garden path! I went there today for a late lunch, ordered the General Chicken lunch plate and an order of veggie chow mein. I left 30 minutes later having left 90% of what I was served on the table. To being with, the egg flower soup was so salty I could not stomach it. The soup also had an oily layer on top unlike any I have ever had before. Next, I moved on to the chow mein which was also so salty I could not eat it. The dish was also swimming in some dark oil that made it very unpalatable, and the veggies in it were stale and tasteless. Lastly, the General's chicken was bland and not at all to my liking, and the steamed rice was dry and stale. I paid my bill and left very unsatisfied and disgusted with myself for once again being sucked in by positive reviews for a place that was far below standard in my book. I have been complaining about not being able to find decent Chinese food in the local area, but after trying Chang's, I will no longer complain about the other places I have tried because this is the bottom of the barrel. read more

Worst food ever!!! First we got our main course, then had to ask for our soups and then our appetizer came out total backwards. Soup was so creamy it looked like a thick gel and the taste was not egg soup. The wontons not even cooked so the dough was gummy. The chicken from the orange chicken was fatty and we had to ask for our bill 5 times. They didn't even ask was everything was ok they asked if we wanted boxes because we had so much food. Just read another Chinese Yelper's review of this place and finally felt compelled to also post a review. I too am a Chinese person living in the area, which means I suffer from the serious lack of authentic Chinese food unless I drive an hour or two away to the Bay Area (Sac Chinese food is overall pretty crappy too). Anyway, I live like literally next to this place and have been here, strictly for take out and delivery a decent amount of times. The reason I order from here is because it's the closest place to my house and again they deliver. Are their food good? Well, as compared to real authentic Chinese food, of course not. Is their food good judging it as an American-made-for-white-people Chinese food? eh, I honestly think Panda Express makes better food at a MUCH MORE reasonable price. Chang Bros is kinda pricey for what it is. My husband, who is white, doesn't even really care for this place. All of their food sorta tastes the same. I get the beef chow-fun cuz it's "somewhat" Chinese-y and I can't get that at Panda Express. Their hot and sour soup is decent, but then again, most hot and sour soups at even a buffet-style Chinese restaurant is decent. Everything else is blah and greasy as heck. If you ever get their chow mein, check the bottom of your container, there is ALWAYS a big puddle of oil sitting there. Again, I eat here only when I am really craving for some Chinese-like food and since there are none around (ok, I guess PF Chang is not that far away, but they're even more pricey than this place) and sometimes I'm just plain lazy (cuz if I wasn't so lazy, I'd drive a little further to Panda Express and get a 2-entree dinner), I order their delivery or kick it in my PJs and go pick up my food. I ordered ours to-go since I live so close. The people who helped me were so nice!! They were helpful with the menu and offered me something to drink while I waited. Excellent customer service goes a long way in my book!! *Chicken Chow Mein - The noodles were cooked just right. It just lacked any depth of flavor. I added soy sauce which helped some. *Mongolian Beef - Good, not great. The beef was cooked nicely. There's a little spice to this dish but it also lacked real flavor. *Egg Drop Soup - They must add turmeric or something because it had a much deeper yellow & reddish color scheme happening than I'm used to seeing. No flavor whatsoever. Sad face. *Egg Rolls (Veggie) - Cooked well and pretty yummy when dipped in the sweet & sour sauce! I really wanted to like this place. I'm not convinced I'll try it again. They do deliver though which is a plus if you can't pick up! Overall, 3 stars for taste but the customer service and the fact that they deliver bumps it up to 3.5 stars! read more

OH GOOD LORD. First time here. Ordered something we thought would be safe: crab and cheese wontons, shrimp with hot garlic sauce, and a side order of rice. I am sorry to say that we will not be back. The wontons had literally no crab in them and the shrimp dish was not edible. Gordon Ramsay would say "have you given up"? The best part of the meal was the fortune cookie. Definitely satisfied with the menu selection and varieties. The flavor was great! The order and delivery to turn around time was great. I'm typically one to judge a Chinese food place on the crab ragoon I was impressed they actually used artificial crab meat. ( most places just use cream cheese now a days). However, displeased with over cooking, leaving texture not so pleasurable. The honey chicken with a little sweet for my palate however, I really enjoyed the general tsos! Definitely not authentic. I SHOULD have followed my golden rule regarding Chinese restaurants. Avoid when in an area that is geographically incorrect for Chinese food. If you don't see Chinese people around, it is geographically incorrect. Ordered the Malaysian beef combo under the bent logic that maaaaybe since it's not on everyone's menu like kung pao chicken, that it might be one of the house specialties. MISS-STAKE. It was regular beef curry except there was a reddish gravy that looked like sweet and sour but tasted of curry. The beef was exceptionally tough cuts and needed tenderizing. There was an over abundance of onion (filler) and some frozen peas and carrots rounded out the dish. All this served over dry old white rice. The combo came with a choice of soup (egg drop or won ton) and a small egg roll. I had the wonton which contained 4 ground pork wontons in chicken broth with scallions. The eggroll had ground pork in it,in addition to the usual cabbage. I would have just preferred plain a veggie eggroll since the ground pork added nothing to it. There's really no excuse for the old steamed rice. It was hard and dry. How are is it to make fresh batch?. Save the day old stuff for fried rice. Also I hate it when Chinese restaurant use the same combo of onions and frozen vegetables for ALL their dishes and change only the meat and sauce for the different items on the menu. The one positive is that the portions of large. And the service was efficient. Needless to say I shall not be back. read more

I've noticed something about myself. I only write reviews when I'm miserable and unhappy. When I'm doing good or "just okay," writing is the furthest thing from my mind. It's only when I want to complain to an unwitting (and often, unwilling) audience that I actually turn up here. So long story short, I'm "new" to the area after things went from bad to worse in my life in no time flat. What do you do when you're depressed and alone in a new city? Go to a Chinese restaurant by yourself, of course. I tried coming here on a Sunday, but was told that was the only day of the week they don't serve lunch specials. Not even an exception for little ol' me while said restaurant was completely dead and uninhabited. I stuck to my guns and left the joint without hesitation. I returned on a weekday. Prompty ordered the General Tso's chicken (I had been perusing the menu on their website for a while now; there are only about two or three Chinese restaurants in all of Rocklin, so I had gotten to know it pretty well). First thing's first: fountain drinks are $3, pushing the total value of my "lunch special" to well over $11. Maybe that's acceptable by Rocklin standards, but it definitely affects my experience as a whole and determines whether or how often I would be willing to return. The food was okay. Nothing special, but like I said, there's not a lot of choice in the area. I'll come back again and try something new. But not anytime soon. Now comes the "customer service" part of the review... I was the only one there (around 2pm), so the staff took to their own table and proceeded to have their lunch feast in conjunction with mine. Which is fine, except they completely ignored me during the duration of their meal. I sat there for 10 minutes with my fork in my plate and my head in my hands while waiting for someone -- anyone -- to take notice. What should I have done in this case? Yelled "HEY, CAN I GET A CHECK HERE?" like an asshole? Or just sat there invisibly and continue to be stepped on and feel even lower than I did coming in? Obviously I'm not a sociopath (sic), so I chose the latter. It's lose-lose as far as I'm concerned. I'm just nitpicking now, but adding insult to injury: when they finally came to drop off the check, they left the customary fortune cookie on the table. I opened it up and...it was empty. My family comes here quite a bit. Even if we're picky of certain things they always take care of us. My parents always have different requests lol! My dad orders his special soup every time we go there with prawns & adds beef (which they stir fry first) sooo good! I love both the combo & seafood pan fried noodles. They do not skimp on the ingredients. Also, they use prawns in a lot of the dishes vs. the little shrimps, which I know costs more, but it's worth it! read more

Just moved to Rocklin form the bay area, so I'm looking for new 'standby' places to eat. Although Chang Bros. may not be 'Asian' enough for some of the other reviewers, I found it to be great quality food, great tasting food, good portions all at a fair price. The crispy beef was outstanding, as was the chicken with grean beans. The real star though was the chicken salad; crisp lettuce, nice peanut crusted chicken, red onions, a sharp, clean vinagrette, and most impressive was they added cold vermicelli noodles to the salad to give it a Vietnamese type flare. The only knock would be that the service was a little bit spotty, but that was made up for by a great attitude. They semed to be 1 person short that night, but it happens in the restaurant biz. read more

I'm reluctantly giving Chang Bros a three-star rating because my wife liked their food. I can also justify raising the star count based upon the excellent customer service we received when dining in. The food however I would rate two-stars at best. My daughter wanted their pad Thai noodles, which smelled and tasted like noodles drenched in fish sauce. My other daughter ordered broccoli chicken which came out as one would expect, and I should also make mention of the fact that the portion was ample. While the Mongolian beef was so-so taste wise, there didn't seem to be any heat (spice), which is something I expect (and the server even commented that this is a spicy dish when we ordered it), furthermore, there was no bed of crispy noodles below the beef! Lastly, I thought I'd try something a little different so I ordered Cleopatra chicken, it's supposed to be chicken lightly breaded in a sweet and spicy sauce with vegetables. Once again, NO SPICE! Very disappointing! And the veggies referred to were only julienne bell peppers and onion. No other veggies. I was certainly not impressed with the food. As I said earlier the service was great, food was served quickly, and the place is neat and clean. If you're not a foodie, you might like it, but if you're looking to please your palate, I'd suggest going elsewhere! read more

Terrible service for lunch yesterday- minus 1 star. There was no visible excuse. Place had 2 tables finishing meals when I got there at 1:20PM. I walked in and ordered immediately (no need for menu). It took 25 min to get my lunch plate, then took another 10 to get a check after I was done. I asked for a paper box and not a styrofoam one for my leftovers, but she said they dont have boxes. BS because one of the tables had gotten boxes for leftovers when I first arrived. Did I stiff'em on a TIP? You make the call...... But dang, I only regret not leaving a penny or two behind. First, a bit of background. I'm a San Franciscan. I have eaten at upscale Chinese Restaurants in Chinatown. And I've eaten at neighborhood type restaurants as well, the ones with tanks of live frogs for "frog stew." Now, in light of that background, let me say that Chang Bros is the only Chinese restaurant in the area, including those on Stockton Blvd. which reminds me of a SF neighborhood restaurant. The food is fresh, flavorful, and when identified as spicy, while not overwhelming so, is very satisfactory. The service is fast and competent, and the facility is clean and pleasant. The menu is large and also available for take-out. There is also delivery in a limited area. I always recommend eating in and taking leftovers. No matter how good a restaurant, the food is never as fresh and therefore as flavorful when taken out. Prices are reasonable and you will always get your money's worth. read more

I'm giving Chang Brothers 4 stars because we have liked everything we've ordered there. The restaurant is not fancy at all - large round tables and booths along the windows/walls. Their lunch specials are big enough to feed myself and my teen daughter or son. Not everything on their dinner menu is offered at lunch, but you can still order those unlisted items. One of my favorite dishes at Chang Bros is their Hot Crispy Chicken or Beef (however we order 'no spicy' for the kids). The menu describes this dish as crispy shredded chicken or beef sauteed with carrots and celery in hot pepper sauce. But I don't think that's a good description. The meat has this crunchy candy-like coating in a brown sauce that is sweet/spicy. It's SO good! My kids just love Crispy Chicken. Another favorite is their Peking Duck. I don't eat it often, but when I do, I get pretty happy:) This dish comes with scallions, pancakes and hoisin sauce. Yum! Staff is great except when you try to correct them about specifics re: your order. I had a long discussion with the day time waitress that i specified 'No Spicy' for my kids' dishes. I won't get into it. She had a hard time admitting she misunderstood though. read more

I live right down the street from Chang Bros but had actually avoided it because a friend had given it a bad review. I finally tried it with co-workers and thought it was pretty decent Chinese food. The service was prompt and the restaurant was clean. The hot & sour soup was good, I hate Chinese restaurants that can't make a decent hot & sour soup. I ordered the General's Chicken and thought it was very good. The portion size was large and the chicken was crisp and the sauce was spicy. The fried rice was below average though, no flavor at all and too much soy sauce to make up for the lack of seasoning. Prices are good, I will definitely come back and will probably try the Garlic Chicken next time since a co-worker ordered it and it looked delicious! read more

The best thing about this place is the tea. There are a variety of hot teas served by the teapot, ranging from a familiar oolong to some more unusual choices like jasmine tea. The hot and sour soup, while not the best I've ever had, is very good. The lunch menu is very reasonably priced and features a good variety. I wish my companion and I had been more adventurous in our choices. I had the bean curd and veggies. She had chicken and broccoli. Both of us were unimpressed with the sauce, which was mostly soy sauce. It was a little too salty. However, the veggies were fresh and gave the dish more flavor and life. I'm upgrading Chang Bros to three stars after two recent takeout meals that were good. I am a fan of their Sweet and Sour Pork. The sauce is perfect with a hint of pineapple yet a good tang. ...Wifey said their Pad Thai was just okay but tasted better the next day. ...Chicken with Snow Peas was on point. Fried Rice is good if you ask them to omit the peas and carrots. They deliver! That actually was the impetus for us to try them again. Favorite thing about here when we started noticing other restaurants short changing us like serving smaller portions, or using smaller shrimp they kept it all the same.
