With out a doubt.. the worst meal I have ever had, The food looked & smelled like the dumpster of a clam bar after a day in the summer sun. The place was very uncomfortable, and was $130. for 4 meals (just entrées, no appetizers or drinks) I had half of a shrimp, and spit out the scallop.. I am So upset with myself for not sending it back (which I have never done - EVER - but should have- 1000x's over with this "meal") I don't even know how to apologize to our guests that we invited out with us. (The staff was 'ok' ...but if they were worth anything.. They would have asked why 3 out of the 4 meals were not even touched..) just awful. read more

My parents have visited Big Thai since they opened in down town. They order regularly, once a week or so. We ordered food last night and it was just not up to par. To explain, they live 20 minutes from Big Thai and our order was at our house in 27 minutes. Clearly time was not spent preparing like it normally is. My mother called to explain and was asked by the male owner to please bring the food back today so they could figure out what happened. I brought food back today, and the female owner met me. She looked in the boxes and said "This looks like how we make food. My suggestion is you never come back." I said "I'm sorry?" And she said "we don't need you here if you don't like it." It was very hurtful, she didn't want to hear what we said. We will not return. Looks like they will have to find a new local favorite. read more

Good curry. Very quiet and empty. Polite wait staff. Portions are big. A little pricey, but not too bad.

Yesterday, I became a Big Thai fan! Years ago, I wrote the restaurant off (don't remember why) but my lunch yesterday was off the chart. The simple salad with fresh ginger/orange dressing was surprisingly delicious. The Chicken Coconut Soup I chose for an entree, was wildly different and just what I was looking for! Hats off to the chef! The waitress was en pointe. She gracefully moved through the restaurant, never interrupting until we acknowledged her. Very rare. We had been drinking wine since we got off work, which was at 2pm and now it was 8pm. Her girlfriend was designatedly driving us somewhere for food. The original plan had been happy hour sushi, but happy hour was long gone. It had been replaced with some guy who lived in the apartment complex next door and who was really into movies. He was the one who insisted we put more wine into a canteen to take with us. The shopping center that Big Thai is located in was empty at 8 on a Thursday night. The restaurant itself was also empty, dashing any hopes I had that our drunkenness would go unnoticed. I ordered a glass of wine, because I had some idea if I actually bought alcohol, the waitress might be too lazy to bust my friends for loudly and obviously trying to swig wine out of a thermos. The malbec made me even more drunk, which is to say of course it did cause it was alcohol, but even more so because suddenly I became aware that I was sitting in a dimly lit room, red and gold and dark, holding stemware, wearing red lipstick. Which may not mean anything to you, but to me at that moment it meant I had better shift from our living room/playing with legos drunk mode to pretty girl at a restaurant trying to not get pad thai down the front of her shirt while still be charming drunk mode. Those are two completely separate things you know, that's a definite distinction. The pad thai was good, but it wasn't spicy enough. I could have asked I guess, but by the time the food came out I was trying so hard to be adult and inconspicuous, she could have brought me a cheeseburger and I wouldn't have said anything. The pad thai was much better, however, the next day when I came home from ten hours at work and ate it in bed watching Joss Whedon shows on Netflix. Neighbor Guy got the drunken noodles, and forced me to try a piece of his kale garnish when I insisted I hated kale. It was lemony and bitter between my teeth. Later he insisted that the onions in the dish were the most perfectly cooked onions he had ever had. He was not wrong. The music playing were these soft rock instrumental covers of pop songs. The girlfriend and I argued over one in particular, me insisting it was Backstreet Boys, her insisting it was older, and it turned out to be All 4 One, so we agreed to both be right, philosophically. Throughout all of this, our waitress was goodnatured and sweet. She didn't purse her lips at us, not even once, and there were no scowls floating in the air. We weren't SO bad after all, just young and pretty and drunk. She got tipped well I think, we aren't THAT young. When I first moved here, I had one particular weekend downtown where Sunday morning I woke up more hungover than I had ever been. I resolved to never ever drink anything with the word Bomb in its name again, and tried googling thai places. I found one mere blocks from my house, the first original Big Thai. It was permanently closed though. My heart was broken, and I never got dumplings that day. That's the degree of bitterness I had to overcome to go to this Big Thai, and it turns out I forgive them. read more

I've been eating at Big Thai since they were downtown! The owners and the entire staff make the experience wonderful. The food is always on point. I eat here every time I visit Wilmington. I travel to Thailand every year, and I think the flavor at Big's is absolutely amazing. The Thai family that owns this is so nice. I highly recommend their homemade coconut cake for dessert. Whenever I'm in Wilmington, Big Thai is a required stop. The food is a step above in quality compared to many other Southeast Asian restaurants in the area. However, the menu is still fairly similar to other Thai restaurant's menus. If you're in the mood for Thai food definitely go to Big Thai. read more

We were visiting Wilmington and wanted Thai food. I checked yelp and came across this place. All the reviews were spot on. great food and intimate setting. lower lighting with real candles on the tables. we started with chicken pad Thai. It was excellent. The flavor was just right not over powered with peanuts. The noodles were cooked perfectly. My wife and I both had red curry and I ordered mine extra spicy. It was excellent as well. Great flavor and the veggies were cooked to perfection not mushy. I had pork in mine and my wife had chicken. Both meats were tender especially the pork. The curries came with white rice which was cooked perfect as well. We had the three menu items, my wife had a glass of wine and I had a coke. It was $57 including the tip. I would recommend this place to anyone and I will definitely go back during my future visits to Wilmington. read more

Very unimpressed. Took my family here Saturday night after the beach. Here are the low lights: - Waitress not only brought me the wrong sake, but spilled a decent amount on the table and never replaced it. - The Pad Thai was very flavorless. - My wife and I both ordered Pad Thai...one at a medium spice, one at hot spice. Both came out identical and were closer to Thai Hot...almost not edible. - Place was busy, which meant a long wait. No surprise. However, the people at the table next to us told the waitress that 3 tables that were sat after theirs were almost done eating and they had yet to get their food. This was one of the worst Thai restaurants I have been to. Will for sure not be back. Update to feedback: The basil rolls were something we sent back because my wife ordered them with no tofu and they came out with tofu anyway...So, I would assume that I wouldn't be charged for your mistake in the first place. read more

Authentic Thai (made by Thai!) Larb and nam sod were excellent. Limited menu (no yum woon sen :'( ) but all was well prepared. I need to find a spot like this in Raleigh Durham. Me & my friends went for a pizza dinner, but we made couple wrong turns & ended up in an empty parking lot, then we saw the sign of Big Thai 2. We decided to give it a try since we all like Thai foods. We started out with the Sring Rolls & Basil Rolls, which are just ok. The Spicy Lemongrass soup was good, . Sweet & Sour Shrimp Fried was not my "like", but one of my friends thought it was great. The Drunken Noodle was good too. My favorite dish here is Pineapple Fried Rice. The service was quick. I think it's over price for the appetizer dishes -which has very small portion. I want to give it a 3 & half stars, but yelp doesn't have the half. read more

Big is a one of our go-to restaurants for delicious food, friendly service, and quick seating. The atmosphere is low-key, good for conversation, and decor is tasteful Thai. And clean! My BF and I went again 3 nights ago and again enjoyed ourselves. We go so often that the staff knows us and our menu selections. They are a really personable group. Originally, we thought we'd hit Indochine since it was a Tuesday night - - fewer crowds than the weekend, but, via a phone call, we were told we'd have to wait at least 30 minutes. So off to nearby Big where we were seated immediately - - as usual! There were only 3 or 4 other tables seated, but weekends tend to be pretty busy. Service was fast and attentive, and our food arrived quickly. I stuck to one of my typical dishes - - stir-fry eggplant with steamed tofu. Oooooh, so good! For a vegetarian, I'm pleased that so many dishes are offered with tofu. The default serving is fried, but you can request steamed with no hassle. BF ordered his usual weird fried rice with extra this and without that... Not really that difficult, but the waitress and kitchen always comply with no problem. And he loves every last morsel. Save room for the heavenly coconut cake. We skipped it this time, but I totally recommend it. read more

We love Big Thai! We had heard about a couple of new Thai places in the area and tried them this week........glad we did because it made us appreciate Big Thai even more!!!! It is tucked into the Food Lion shopping center by Landfall, so I think it gets overlooked sometimes, but it is by far the best Thai food in town! The staff is always very friendly, the food is delicious and prepared to order, however you like it. Some of our favorites are the pot stickers (every member of our family gets their own order!), the beef numtuk, spicy coconut soup, any of the curries, and the whole fish specials. And of course the coconut cake! This is the best Thai food in the area! We are thrilled they are close to the beach. We love to take people here from out of town b/c they are always impressed with the food. read more

I visited Big Thai bc the reviews were glowing (and the $2 off check-in discount), and was somewhat disappointed. Maybe it was because I went at lunch on a Sunday but nothing was a home run. Do not order the Basil Roll - it's a roll of nothing taste items (rice paper, tofu and rice noodles) and out of the jar plum sauce. It was not good. My main was chicken Pad Thai. It was ok. The chicken was dry but the sauce was good. It all needed a kick of flavor or spice. On the plus side, service was kind and attentive, the atmosphere was nice, and the prices were very reasonable.
