So, when we first moved to Houston from Virginia, there was this place called ESARN THAI in the Jersey Village area off Jones & West Rd, and they had the best menu ever!! Well, Covid killed their business but even before that, they just weren't really on their game for a minute. Fast forward to yesterday when we're in the Pasadena area to buy some work shirts, we're feeling a burger so we're going to the place next door but something just didn't jive when we walked in. Walk outside to drive off and see this place next door - we're always in the mood for some great Thai so wife and I decide to stop in. Man 'o man - did we hit the jackpot with this place!! The feel of this establishment is definitely a feel-good Asian restaurant that will do whatever it takes to make you feel at home. Add the fact that the chicken pad thai literally took my wife back to 15 years ago when we found our place in Jersey Village, but when I tried the chicken red curry that was really hot even at just the "number 4" factor? This is one of THE best Thai restaurants I've tried in Houston and honestly it's a hole-in-the-wall. It's right outside the beltway on the east side of the city so it's a little harder to get to, but it's so worth it. The menu was surprisingly huge with so many good options. They don't play with their spices, so make sure you know your spice tolerance. You can't go wrong with the famous Pad Thai that they make extremely tasty here. The green beans xo sauce was phenomenal as well - whatever they coat it in really elevates the flavor and makes the vegetable much more enjoyable. I also wanted something light and hearty so I got the jungle curry. The two tone Thai tea was good, nothing extraordinary but will still satisfy you if you want a milky drink. It's essentially just Thai tea mixed with Thai green tea so if you've ever wanted them mixed together and weren't able to at other places, it doesn't hurt to try here (it's the same price as the regular ones anyway). And for the star to end the meal was the infamous mango sticky rice. By far the best I've had at any restaurant! The mango was perfectly ripe, the sticky rice was a perfect consistency, and the coconut milk was perfectly smooth. Absolute cinema. I would come back here just for this! They have a happy hour special with a cute little bird cage that the appetizers are on. The menu is extensive with lots of options. I tried the honey duck and that was a bit sweet in its own I give it 3 stars. They had so many different desserts and I tried the jelly cake which is lychee and coconut. WOW!!! In the mood for Thai and the place closest to us changed and isn't great. So we dashed this place. Panang Curry with chicken and Hawaii Curry with shrimp. Both unbelievably good! The spice level goes from 1-10, then. 11 for Thai spicy....we figured a 3 would be good....nose dripping after first couple of bites and we enjoy some heat. My coworkers and I found this spot nearby our office so decided to give it a try for lunch! The interior is nicely decorated and the staff were very warm and welcoming. The menu has lots of items to choose from but I decided to get their lunch item (drunken noodle with chicken). Lunch is from 11am- 3pm Mon-Fri and this comes with a house soup and crispy wonton skin. Ok this place is not bad and perhaps the Snack Hour is a fun experience. However I was hungry and needed food. I have been looking for good Thai food in or near Houston. I ordered the veggie egg rolls that came in an order of 4. They were the small ones though so I could've eaten all of them myself. They tasted fine and the sauce was yummy. I was most impressed with the dish that they were served in. Ok now the food, I'm typically not a noodle girl but that's def the route I should've went. Pork belly 3/5. Pork belly could have benefited from more seasoning. For entree we split the Boat Noodle Soup. Generous size and very tasty. Plenty of beef but the bean sprouts were missing. Here in Houston for work my co worker was wanting to eat some Thai so he found this spot. The staff was very friendly and helpful. The servers are friendly. The food is always hot and very tasty. Their drinks are fresh and good. My one complaint is the service. They will come right away and take orders but they do not come back except to bring the order. I have never been there, where I don't have to either flag them down or get up and go get them to get refills or the check or box. Once they bring the food, you will definitely have to go get them for any other service. The ambiance is pretty nice. I like how bright it is inside, and I like that there's a bunch of booths instead of open tables because it feels more private to your party. Our server was super nice and attentive, and she brought us extra hot sauce and cleared the table whenever we were done with our dishes throughout the meal, so it felt like they were on top of it with service. The food was also pretty flavorful. The Pad Thai could've been spicier for my liking, and the noodles were a bit too sticky, but the flavor and portion sizes were good. It's as if they read my mind with that mistake though. The gentleman who took my order has only been in the country for a week now... proud of him. There is no better Asian food in my opinion than Thai food, and I have Indian ancestry. I ordered the drunken noodles, and basil Thai fried rice.... The basil Thai, was not even fried rice... so I don't know why they did that. The drunken noodles was not the square shape flat noodles... these Thai places keep buying the cheaper noodle now. We've been going here fairly regularly since they have opened, and we're usually never disappointed enough in the food quality to actually post a negative review. I'm not sure what happened over the last few months, but any sense of consistency is completely gone. I like my food as spicy as most places will serve it, and before the last few times I've come here they haven't had an issue with that. The last 3 times I've been here my food has been significantly bland and underseasoned and without any noticeable spice at all, and 2 of those times I've found hair in my or my girlfriend's food. Don't offer a spice scale between 0-10, 10 being Thai hot (which is what I always request), if you aren't going to give the customer what they ask for. Maybe the kitchen staff changed, maybe they changed recipes but I won't be coming back here for a while. The food has unfortunately lost its authenticity. Hopefully they can fix whatever issues they're having in the kitchen so they can once again be the only good Thai restaurant in the southeast area. I'd rather make the drive up to north Houston to get some real, authentic Thai food. Portions were very small for the cost. I really didn't like the giant chunks of barely cooked tomato and onion. It was a large percentage of what I was served, I really don't appreciate spending $14 on what was basically a bunch of raw onions and tomatoes with a little bit of noodle and other things included. I looked at the menu online before ordering, and I specifically chose a noodle dish with mushrooms. I even asked over the phone, to make sure it had mushrooms and they said yes, but, there were no mushrooms in my food.. The soup also had gigantic chunks of barely cooked tomatoes and onion in it. For $10 the portion was extremely stingy as well, but that didn't matter, because it was really bad. It was supposed to be a creamy coconut soup, but it tasted like vinegar. Just a completely disappointing and unpalatable meal. Customer service was good, but I definitely won't be back.
