Worst haircut experience of my life. Megan cut my hair, cost 48 dollars. Right side an inch longer than the left and angles like Jen Anniston via friends with a weed wacker. I complained and they brought me in to fix it. Al told me it was a good haircut and he didn't want to touch it "and be the next person I didn't like". O-M-G!!! Best massage ever. I feel like a whole new woman. The decor is fabulous and soothing, with black and white prints of Marilyn Monroe mixed with teal green accents. I have an upcoming trip to the Caribbean so I booked 3 services at Changes: bamboo scrub, 60 min pedi, and shellac mani. I'm not going to name drop because I never remember anyone's name to begin with, but overall it was a great experience. There was a longer than usual wait time btwn services, which was unexplainable, and no one at the spa offered me anything to drink, but otherwise, both technicians were professional and friendly. Bamboo body scrub ($75): to ensure an even, overall tan I think this body scrub is necessary. I also upgraded to the peel cream for an extra $10 which tightens and firms so I could make sure to be beach-ready. My skin is like butta. 60-min pedicure ($65, which includes parrafin and callus eliminator): they seemed to already have default colors for their french tips pedicure, which was the only thing I didn't like because I like to pick my overall color rather than go with the standard, boring neutral most french pedicures come with. So that is another thing I would have liked to of been able to choose. Shellac manicure ($50): No hand massage! Most manicures come with this, right? Kind of dissapointing. Otherwise, I'm excited to try shellac and see how long it lasts. The shellac colors you have to choose from are more limited than regular polish, but I made sure to ask for a not-boring overall color for french tips. Like I said, overall everyone was fine (although I am used to OUTSTANDING service from day spas) but it was a relaxing spa day, for sure. Plan on parking in the Farm Fresh parking lot, as there will be zero on street parking (and only for 2 hours). read more

Changes is expensive. HOWEVER...it's one of the only places that I go to get my eyebrows waxed and my haircut. I don't trust anyone else with my hair...so I pay the extra money. The pedicures are also expensive..and they aren't much better than a $15 pedi you can get at your local nail salon. I abosolutely love this place. I always had a hard time finding someone who was able to give me a good haircut. I am bi-racial and so my hair can get a bit complicated. I got tired of paying these average 'hair stylists' money to butcher my hair, so I decided to call Changes since my sister is a faithful client. The first time I went to the salon, the hair stylist they originally placed me with did not feel comfortable with my type of hair and that my friends is when I met Rachel. And let me just tell you, she has been my savior for the past two years. She is the ONLY person in this world that I would trust with scissors near my hair. She takes her time, makes sure that I am happy with the cut, listens to me and also took into consideration that I wear my hair naturally curly quite a bit. Considering one of my best friends is now a faithful client of hers, it speaks wonders about her talent. I know the other women in the salon are talented, but I am faithful to my girl Rachel! My friend comes here for every service from head to toe and I was hoping to like Changes. After a 30 minute wait I told the receptionist to cancel my appointment. Where has customer service gone. I used to visit this spa for special occassions when I attended ODU. Now I make a trip to Changes an excuse to visit Norfolk. I have had a body scrub and multiple hot stone massages. I love the atmosphere and no mater who completed my massage I was always pleased. I have been here twice for a couples massage with my best friend and mother. They both enjoyed the spa thoroughly. I feel the prices are reasonable and have no complaints about service or parking. For my last massage in May/2010 I requested a particular therapist months in advance. I was notified well in advance that she would not be able to do my massage as she was no longer employed with the spa. I was assigned to a different person but I was also given 50% off automatically. Sweeeeeet! They take good care of the customers and I still recieve coupons from them periodically. Highly recommended. read more

In the past, I would have given this Salon 5 stars. I had been going there for years to get my hair cut and received excellent customer service. Today, when I was handed a total bill due that was much higher than I had budgeted (based on the prices posted on the website), the manager did not have the decency to come out and talk to me. She just relayed a message to an employee. I was very upset and the poor employee tried her best to smooth everything over. I will NOT be recommending this place to my friends in the area. read more

I've been going to this place on and off for five years getting my nails done, and then almost a year ago, I got fed up with the hair salon I was at and decided to drive the 20 minutes from where I live to here. I've NEVER been happier. Nadia, Jana, and Kirsten are fantastic nail techs! There are others as well, I've just never had them, but I'm sure they are great because I always see the same people in their. Caitlin is fantastic with hair! I'd never go anywhere else unless I moved out of the area due to the navy. This place is a one stop shop. I have gotten massages here, nails, and hair. I have been going to Changes for 9 years now. I have been faithful to this place simply because of their great customer sevice, and amazing stylists. After dozens of hair cuts, and plenty of up-do appointments (I am no expert at doing my own hair for important events and functions), I am always pleased time and time again. All of the employees seem so upbeat and make you feel at home. I tell the stylist what I need, and they go above and beyond my expectations. The prices arent bad, considering the skill. You are paying for quality!!! (And remember, you can always request a specific level stylist, so you dont end up paying for something you dont need.) I will never go anywhere else. The best salon and spa in norfolk!!! I have used the spa services before, and they make you feel very comfortable, and you are treated like a VIP. I'm a huge fan of this place. It was recommended to me when I first moved the area and I haven't been disappointed. I come here for waxing - it has to be one of the best waxing places I've ever been to. Today I saw Gala and she was amazing. She knew what she was doing and the process was practically painless. We chatted but she wasn't annoying and let me read the magazine when the time was right. I felt really relaxed and upon assessing the job it was nicely done. In terms of the salon - it is super clean, has every salon service possible, and I love the decor. It is very peaceful but young and trendy at the same time. The staff is really great - always friendly, always helpful. They also have water, tea, and little snacks in case you are waiting or you brought your man and you need to keep him occupied so that he doesn't get cranky. I would give this place 4 stars but in terms of waxing services they are a bit pricey - they do a great job and I can respect that but I'm a little surprised as this is the most expensive waxing I have ever gotten and I used to live in NYC and San Fran. Had a good first experience yesterday. I got a gel manicure. Lady was very nice and did a great job. It was more expensive than I'm used to but I expect my nails to last longer than normal manis. Will come back again maybe for a pedicure when it's warmer outside. Very cute salon and everyone was very nice. The good: Had a wonderful shellac manicure from Corina. She was excellent - very friendly, efficient, fun to be around, and loved that I wanted to do a fun (simple) design. The salon itself was very clean, bright, and lively. Lots of nail polish choices and they have them on all color pops so you can try it against your skin tone - LOVE that. Prices are average, if maybe slightly on the higher side, but you get what you pay for - great service, nice atmosphere. The bad: The front desk staff, however, was very standoff-ish, like they were annoyed that customers were there interrupting their day. They give off attitude like they think everyone that walks in the door is beneath them. They literally look down their nose at you, all three of them I encountered. Thankfully, I didn't have to deal with them very much. Also - the "parking lot??" It's a straight row from the street towards the building, with slanted parking on either side - nowhere to turn around. Thank goodness I have a rear camera on my car or I likely would have hit another car because you have to back out! The photo of the parking lot here on Yelp makes it look MUCH wider than it is. Annoyance: not being able to tip on your credit card. I understand why, but still annoying. At least they have an ATM on site, which is helpful. Fortunately, Corina is worth dealing with the couple headaches and I'll definitely go back to see her! read more

Was PERFECT. I had a couples massage here on December 23. I never felt awkward during the massage, and the masseuse was SO NICE. I told her where I had aches, that I run, student, etc...and she had great techniques that really personalized my experience based on what I told her. The biggest musts for me are a quiet atmosphere, a rather quiet masseuse, and really good technique. Changes offered all of that. My boyfriend and I were in a daze once they were done. SO WONDERFUL. And they gave us $10 off coupons for the next massage (although they expire in January)...but still, very nice gesture. Go! read more

Always clean, and the employees are professional. The "spa" area upstairs is very relaxing, with water and some refreshments provided. However, some services are expensive and not necessarily worth the price. I've been to the City Spa for haircuts, a manicure, and eye brow waxing, so I'll review each of those services. Manicures - Unfortunately the French manicure I received did not last as long as I was hoping - within a day my nails were chipped, and the final result did not look salon-done. The nail technician did use a new set of tools which made me feel better in terms of sanitation and cleanliness. Haircuts - Changes had different "levels" of hair stylists. I normally request a level I stylist ("Intern") to save money - plus, I'm not sure how much of a skill difference there really is between different levels, and I'm always satisfied with my haircut. Be sure to specify what level you want, otherwise you'll automatically be assigned a higher level stylist, who will charge at least $30-40, not including a wash and style. Also, I recommend showering and washing your hair prior to your appointment. Let your stylist know you don't need your hair washed, because that costs extra. If you wash prior, they'll simply wet your hair (no cost). Additionally, I prefer to style my hair myself at home after the cut rather than paying for a blow-dry. Brow waxes - The skincare professionals there have always done a great job on my eyebrows. Be sure to explain exactly how you want your brows done! I was at Changes a few days ago and overheard an unhappy client talking to the skincare staff. She had received a chemical peel and her skin had an adverse reaction to whatever product or process was used. She was worried her skin would not recover in time for her wedding - probably not a smart idea to have such a treatment done 2 weeks before! The staff assured her she would receive corrective treatment free of charge and understood her concerns. I wouldn't recommend experimenting with such treatments prior to a big event, but the staff handled the unhappy client well. Finally, college students can get 10% off a service when they present their student IDs. It's worth asking about military and senior discounts as well! read more

I called 2 weeks in advance so I could set up an appointment to get my hair braided for an event. I asked if anyone there knew how to do a French fishtail braid but "Dutch" or "reverse" where the braid sits on top. The receptionist said someone would be able to do it. So when I get there, the person trying to do the braid for me had no idea what to do. I ended up just getting a regular French braid. I was very disappointed. I feel like they should have either learned how to do it in the 2 weeks they knew about it or they could have let me know if it couldn't be done so I could go somewhere else instead of finding out they didn't know how to do it the day of my event. read more

I got a haircut and full highlights. Cost $195. I was fairly happy with it. I think I will probably not go back though, because I feel like the dye they use is damaging my hair. I think I will stick to Aveda dye in the future. I am just peeved about the fact that you can't leave a tip on your card. Changes tries to bill itself as an upscale salon, but not allowing tips on a card is so tacky and cheap. It's terribly inconvenient and poor custom service. But I see a number of other reviewers have left the same complaint so Changes is clearly not too concerned. I guess if you do go there, be prepared and come with cash in advance (they do have an ATM that charges a $3 surcharge). They will give you cash for a check. They are just too cheap to pay the credit card fees on your tip. read more

I went to this salon because I colored my hair myself and it came out too dark. A young gal named Chelsea was supposed to correct my hair, she used some kind of color remover which did nothing at all. She then gave me highlights and did my roots. Now my roots are as dark brown as before, even more so and now I have red highlights! I spent 3 1/2 hours there it cost $180 without the tip, which I had to get from their ATM machine because they don't let you add a tip to your card. I called to say I hated my hair. I had to make another appointment to have them look at my hair. I waited 15 minutes and I had to leave. I will never go back. That place is huge and it's like a factory. Never going back read more

Horribly overpriced and snobby people. I made an appointment with no one in particular for partial foils, haircut and blowout. I came in for my appointment and waited 20 minutes with no offer of something to drink or explanation as to why my wait was so long. Girl at counter treated me like I wasn't cool enough to be in HER salon. Finally when the stylist came to me, he seemed friendly enough. He sat me in the chair to do the consult and then left to (I assume) get product from the dispensary. He was gone for another 20 minutes and came back to me reeking of cigarettes. Finally he got to my hair. He did 7 foils through the top of my hair. The color came up brassy so he had to apply a toner. He then shampooed me ad did the cut and blowout. the cut and style was great as was the color, no complaints there. Here is where I had a problem. Checking out I was told that my bill for the day was $180.00!!!! I was not expecting that at all. $100 yes, but twice that? NO! I asked her why it was so high and she told me that I had a master stylist and he fetched a larger price. I told her that I didn't request a master stylist, so I shouldn't be charged more if they happen to give me one. Then she said that I had a double process because he toned my highlighted hair. I told her that had he processed it properly the first time he wouldn't have had to tone it (I have had my already blonde hair highlighted many many times and have never had to have it toned before) and that I would not pay for his mistake. I also complained about the service taking and hour longer then it should because they didn't see me for 20 minutes and my stylist took a break and left me alone for 20 minutes AND the toning process. I refused to pay an outrageous price for 7 foils as well. When I told her that I wasn't paying that, she told me that if I refused to pay the amount charged to me, she would call the police. I paid and then disputed the charges with my cc company. BAD BUSINESS OVERALL! read more

THE WORST PLACE TO GET ANYTHING DONE! They do NOT value you as a customer. They not only jack up their prices, they will ALSO turn your hair green TWICE, then yell at YOU for it, in front of everyone! They will not address their own mistakes, they humiliate you in front of their staff and other customers, and will speak to you worse than any respectful customer/human being deserves to be spoken to like. They have poor service, poor scheduling, awful attitudes and behavior. You're just a number to them, they do not care if they make your nails bleed, they just try to rush and get you finished and out. They don't care if your hair is turning green, they just want to get on to the next client. They will talk badly about not only you to everyone else, but also about everyone else to you. It makes you extremely uncomfortable, they know it, and they don't care. I had been going there for 3 years until finally the straw that broke the camel's back. Take your money and service elsewhere if you want your COLOR done right, or anything else for that matter. They can't stand the thought of taking responsibility when their services are less than what they should be, especially for the prices they demand. They don't value their customers because they know they can do just fine without a few here and there. I USED TO take any bridal or baby showers here, as well as refer all of my friends here, but not anymore. I refuse to ever come back to this salon, for anything, EVER again. I PROMISE you, you will NOT be happy at this salon. Take your service to AOC salon, RIGHT DOWN THE STREET! That's where I go now, and I could NOT be happier. It is also an upscale salon, however without the inflated prices that Changes City Spa demands, and they do a wonderful job, above and beyond anything you could've imagined! I have been frequenting Changes for 6+ years and I'm finally leaving a review! So believe me, this review is based on a ton of experience with the spa. 5 stars isn't to say that 'every' experience I've had there is superior, but when at least 8 out of 10 experiences have been wonderful, I can't consider leaving anything less than 5 stars. I have received massages, facials, waxings, manicures, pedicures and hair cut/color. The service that stands out at me the most are the pedicures and shellac manicures with Corina. I have been going to Corina for years. There's several qualities she has that make her the best.... 1) I've had shellac manis with other techs at other spas who have left my nails lumpy/bubbly looking. Corina makes it look so easy! She uses the right amount of shellac and polish on the nails so the finish is smooth and perfect. She also shapes the nail exactly the way I like it. 2) She is friendly and fun, I enjoy every visit I make to the salon. 3) She's great at suggesting colors that look good on you. She will encourage you to think outside of your comfort zone with colors. I used to be a sheer pink only kind of a gal, but she has since had me in charcoal gray, dark blue, purple, dark pink, chocolate brown, and most recently RED... and I feel hot!!! I can't thank her enough for always making my nails beautiful and making me feel beautiful by seeing things through others eyes instead of allowing me to be self-critical. I also love Stephanie or Gala for waxings and facials. Nicole is amazing for hair. Patrick, who works the desk, is also amazing!!! I always look forward to seeing everyone when I go in and feel like they have become family. The only reason that I go to other salons is because I now live 3 hours from Norfolk and I have decided to seek hair services a little closer to home. I have also, in the past 6 years, lived in San Francisco and still felt Change's was the standard for salons.... Yes, even better than those I visited in SF. The scope of services they offer, the cleanliness of the facilities, the products they sell, their service providers, their hours and their customer service... all amazing!! The service starts from the ground up, and you will often times see the owner, Norma, around the salon thanking clients and welcoming them. Highly Recommend Changes with hesitation!! P.S. I have heard some people comment on how expensive it is... you get what you pay for. The cleanliness alone to me is worth the cost. Although, if you've ever visited salons outside of Hampton Roads, you will realize how reasonably priced the services actually are. A Shellac Mani is around $45 at Changes. I paid $85 for one in Charlottesville a few weeks ago... and it SUCKED. read more

I tried Changes when my favorite person at Serenity Spa got a better job elsewhere. While the work done was okay, the cost of the service was obscene. I paid 63.00 for eye brow waxing , shaping and tinting. Also, my eyelashes were tinted. 63.00 plus a 12.00 tip, really? When I paid for the services and was asked if I was a first time customer, I was given a gift. What woman (of a certain age) is thrilled to receive a beer cozy? The first time customer gift was hyped up, built up a little expectations. Frankly I was thinking a hand cream , something nice. A salon that costs too much and gave me cheap pen and a beer cozy. I came in to town from out of state and was asked to prepay on my credit card prior to arriving and that was ok since I was coming from out of state. What I am EXTREMELY upset about is how GREEDY they are about tipping. I was double charged on the tip and NO one spoke up and said anything and I think that is VERY poor business!!!!! I love this place for one reason: my stylist, Brandi. If she left Changes, I'd follow her right out the door! She's always patient as I explain how I want my hair styled, looks at all the photos I take along with me, etc. She's friendly and wonderful. The spa space is lovely, for the most part. I But it's very busy and somewhat noisy on the first floor - not really a day-spa experience if you're the relaxing type. I've had a manicure here twice - overpriced, especially considered you can get a comparable job just down the street at Vy's Nail Shop. Reception is always overly busy, and the folks working the desk not very friendly. I've waited up to 30 minutes in the lobby and never been offered water, wine, coffee, etc., even though all of those are available. I can't comment on the other spa services because, again, I find them way too pricey. It is a solid place for a haircut. Other than that, I think you can shop around across Norfolk and Hampton Roads for a better deal. Also: Beware that they no longer allow you to place tips on credit or debit cards! You must have cash. I received a massage and mani/pedi as a gift. The massage was wonderful and the facilities were lovely. The pedicure was pleasant enough but the results were mediocre. The manicure flat out sucked. My French manicure was so sloppy that I removed the polish when I got home. Worst of all, between the actual service and the wait time between services, the mani/pedi part alone took two hours. Ain't nobody got time fo dat!!! Thank goodness I didn't have to pay for any of it or I'd be really ticked. Needless to say, I won't be spending any of my own money here. read more

Two issues with Changes on 21st Street next to Gene Walter. 1. Stylist competency varies considerably. I was loyal to a stylist for 2 years. When she left, I tried two other stylist and they failed to do a decent job, straight job. 2. During the holiday season, Changes promotes a SCAM operation. They advertise free holiday gift from a 'sidewalk' operation. They even have a security person over see the operation. The scam is that there is NOTHING FREE. Its simply a GIFT CARD that you must LOAD with CASH. So basically they are selling a pre-loaded card that you select how much you want to put into it. BUT... they scam around and don't explain this. They ELUDE that its something MORE. They simply say you must make a donation... I was waiting for the bus and watched them SCAM-jerk around two people. I interjected when a third person began asking questions, I simply told them the deal. The security guard asked me to move along. I reminded her it was a PUBLIC SIDEWALK, and to call a real cop. read more

My sister-in-law treated her bridal party to manicures and pedicures before her wedding last weekend, and it was a wonderful experience. The staff were very welcoming - they even gave the bride some body butter and salt scrub as a gift! We had a private room for mimosas and lunch (which we brought in), and they kept us together as a group for both the manicures and pedicures. I rarely go to the spa, so the whole process felt really luxurious. And my nails still look great! read more

If you are ever looking for a great massage therapist, Lorie is amazing!! Hands down the best massage I ever got. She listened to my concerns and asked me if the pressure was ok. I will definitely go back to her exclusively and would recommend her to anyone that asks. I gave 4 stars because when I called to make the appointment I asked if I could get a cupping massage and they said that Lorie didn't do cupping. Come to find out when the topic came about during my massage, she indeed does do cupping. So it was unfortunate that they didn't know what their massage therapists offered. Otherwise great experience. One other thing I would mention is their accessibility is a bit lacking in that there are no elevators for people in wheelchairs to get to the massages that are on the second floor.
