Haven't been here in a long time and had been wanting to so finally made it back. Unfortunately it's not at all what I remember. Not as much variety of veggies and I think it's just plain dumb to have items on both sides that aren't the same. It's only after when you see your friend with something that you realize it was on the other side of the station and you missed it. Cooking seems more careless than it used to be and people there just kind of get in the way. No spatial awareness and yes, please move to the front when you're the next in line. Don't stand next to the station when people are trying to get to the grill. Didn't come back to check on drinks but at least someone did pick up the plates. It's what you make of it so that's kind of on you. They still give you a little ice cream style dessert at the end. Now that I've gone I think I'm probably good for the rest of my life because there just wasn't anything special. This is a restaurant one will visit no more than once. The rice smells like a dishrag. The wait staff (ALL) talks to you with open mouthfuls of food. The sauce Buffett is disgusting and the carpet is many, many years past need of replacement. Spare yourself this experience. Eat anywhere else. read more

Went for a quick lunch at open (11:30a), we were seated quickly and everything was ready to go. Friendly staff, lots of options. Spinach, onion, celery, carrot, bell pepper, mushroom, bean sprouts, zucchini, broccoli, green onion, and more. Chicken, beef, pork, lamb, and fish (?) Since first reviewing Chang's Mongolian Grill at 122nd Avenue, Portland in 2013, I've come to a change of heart in categorizing this Mongolian-style buffet and grill eats joint. After having enjoyed or not enjoyed similar eats across multiple cities across the U.S., north, east, south and west I've come to a noteworthy and somewhat surprising realization. Chang's Mongolian Grill at 112nd Avenue, Portland, is if not the best, very darn close to the best Mongolian Grill I've visited to date - anywhere! As I've mentioned before, not the best restaurant in the world, it does oblige up some actually great stuff by way of their self-serve stomach stuffing, hunger stifling, long assed, and astoundingly delish buffet assortment! Since its introduction to the east and west through China by the infamous Genghis Khan during 13th century invasion of China - the food style has pretty much swept the world with its simplicity, taste and to a certain extent affordability. One of the most important advantages to these grills is the assortment of items you can put together to create a unique dish of your own. Almost any Mongolian resto buffet will typically incorporate crab legs: fried, steamed, or boiled. Also, Hibachi-style stations: with grilled meats such as fish, pork and others. Sometimes a fresh sushi bar: Sushi rolls and other sushi offerings could be available. Conventional Mongolian offerings: such as dumplings, noodles, and other traditional items are usually available. And last but not least, vegetarian options can include: Broccoli; Bell peppers red, yellow, and/or green; Carrots; red onions; Snap peas; Mushrooms. This all caters to dietary and taste bud preferences. Such options and diversity are developed to offer a mixed yet extensive and diverse dining experience, with self-serve and/or self-stuffing convenience. With this accessibility at your disposal, if you leave hungry, you most definitely have a serious problem they cannot help with. One of the most in your face stand outs for me at this Chang's is their attention to detail... constant cleanliness and upkeep of their buffet area, the overall cleanliness of the eating area in general - I rarely see an unclean table, as well as attentive staff, unless folks are just then walking away. Also, the grillers are fantastic... prepping your food just as you order it! These artists overall have the uncanny abilities only excelled by Teppanyaki pros! "Frozen Meat, Lukewarm Service, and a Buffet That Could Use Some Fire Support" The veggies on Chang's Mongolian Grill buffet were plentiful and fresh -- colorful, crisp, and begging to be stir-fried. Unfortunately, the same can't be said for the "meats," which looked like they were flash-frozen sometime during the Korean War. The beef was thinly sliced, yes, but frozen nearly solid and chewier than a boot heel after a 100-mile march. For $17.95, I wasn't expecting Kobe beef, but I was hoping for something I could bite through without dislocating my jaw. The sauce selection was solid -- soy, garlic, chili oil, the usual suspects -- but no amount of flavor could hide the frostbite in that protein lineup. The grill guy did his job with military precision, but the end result was more MRE reheated on a Humvee hood than authentic Mongolian stir-fry. Service? Functional. They kept the water glass full and cleared the plates, but smiles were in short supply -- maybe they're frozen too. Not rude, just not friendly or welcoming. If you're looking for hospitality, you won't find it here. Bummer. Had the meat been leaner and easier to chew, we might have considered a return mission. But this was a one-and-done operation. People either love it or hate it--I think this place is great. Not a destination, night out or date, but just good, healthy food at a good AYCE price. You control the oil, sauce and all that goes into your food. I love it for a weeknight dinner, even to-go. For $21, I get at least 3 meals. Selections are not extensive, but more than enough meats, which are frosty or frozen, but raw on a buffet, I think it's a plus, think how you buy hot pot meat and such. Veggies are fresh and lots of options. I do wish that they would expand their noodle game--but probably would be hard to do rice or other on the grill. Service is a mixed bag, but I usually get to-go, and always super friendly and ready to help get bagged up with the soup and rice wraps. I recommend, again, as a casual, no frills place. It's not the Changs of the 90's or 00's, but it will do in a pinch. The bar is very sketch when it comes to food safety, but they do cook the ish out of it. I'm docking them a star because there were several tables that were dirty, and we didn't have a "waiter" we had to seek someone out to get us wraps and rice. Later saw him talking to someone in the back, leaning while doing so, again while several tables were left dirty/a mess. I've waited tables, worked food service, etc. There is a motto that fits perfectly here. read more

This restaurant is unique in that you select from a large variety of meats, seafood, vegetables and noodles and then a person cooks it on a huge wok. They have many different sauces to put on your food. You can also ask for hot and sour soup or egg drop soup. Rice and wonton wraps are provided. The service is very pleasant. read more

I called to confirm a free birthday dinner at 11:30 and a Chinese lady said yes, but bring ID. I arrived at 6:00 pm, there were 2 people in the entire dining room. The receptionist said, I think it's a free dessert but let me go get my manager. The manager arrives and says it is only if you are a member I said no, however I had called and been told it would be a buy one dinner and get one dinner free. What a let down. At the bar, when ladling the sauce into your bowl, run some over your finger and taste it. They have cut the sauces with regular oils or water. No hot oil on the bar. When we sat down, we were told there's no plum sauce. The waitress comes to the table and asked if everything is OK, we say no, she stands looking at us... blink blink. Don't ask if you're not ready to have a conversation. Same thing happens at the counter as were checking out, everything good? No. The guy says, "oh, sorry". Doesn't ask us why? So we tell him and this is what we get.... They no longer have hot oil saying it is a 'fire hazard so they either had to get rid of it or close their business'. How can this possibly be? That would mean every Asian restaurant with hot oil, chili oil, would have to go out of business, or remove it from their menu and their dishes. Cooking sherry, anyone ever heard about that being flammable? It's still on the bar, but so heavily cut there's no way it would light up. They no longer have plum sauce. Why? Because they said they found people doing things to the bottles that they shouldn't be (I don't doubt it) Why don't you keep it in back and when someone ask for plum sauce you give them plum sauce? Blank look in return. Originally, when we asked where the plum sauce was she said it's up by the grill with the sesame seeds and nuts. So we go up there and get some in a bowl only to find out it's teriyaki sauce. This place is my guilty pleasure. I almost never endorse all you can eat food farms but I really love this place. It's clean enough and has a variety of choices. It's basic but honestly delish. Our soda clearly had water in it. Food was good. But the fact that they won't let up take your left over food home from your first plate, is ridiculous. It doesn't say anywhere you can't take your leftover food home that you just paid for. They would much rather throw away good food instead of letting you take what you just paid for. I'm a big fan of Mongolian grills! This particular location is humbly furnished, run by friendly and accommodating people. The egg drop soup is a little bland for me, but everything else is on point. It's hard to fault any meal here unless you screwed up yourself, because they've never burned anything on the hot plate, which of happened at from the less reputable Mongolian grills that I have visited. The ingredients here are always fresh, well-stocked and they do a good job of cleaning the buffet area. As far as I'm concerned, this is the best Mongolian Grill on the east side of Portland. An interesting side note in the time of Covid-19: they have taken the extra step and will actually prep your bowl for you! You just tell him what ingredients you want, and they do all the work. At Changs, the food is as good as the sauce you make so my food was goid. The service was a little sparse but friendly. The only con was the hot and sour soup was very lacking. No spice, no flavor and just not very good. This was the 1st time I didn't like the soup at a Changs. read more

The first section is frozen, thin protein like chicken, lamb, beef, fish, and tofu. The second section is veggies and noodles. The third and final section is all sauces. Once you fill a bowl or two with ingredients, you wait in line to have the cooks prepare your food. This takes about 5-10 minutes. They have different flavored lemonades. I got to try mango and strawberry. They have mushi pancakes. These are thin wraps that can be used to make dumplings. You have to ask the waitress for these. Staff is pleasant. I used to love coming here. Probably never coming back, the nostalgia alone can no longer excuse the lack of quality and care in their cooking. I get that it's busy, but undercooked food is just bad full stop. If it was just beef I would be cool, but since I got pork I wasn't taking chances. "Get back in line for a do over!" You say? Yea standing in a long line on a busy day again isn't my idea of a good time. I don't eat out much, and when I do I tend to try healthy options, and Chang's appears to fit the bill. The restaurant appears clean, and the food looks fresh. There are no strong odors from old or rotting food.This is either the second or third time that I have eaten here and suffered from what I could call mild food poisoning. A few hours post eating here I felt sick to my stomach and lethargic. Later on there was diarrhea. This was the last thing I ate prior to these symptoms, and the only thing I had consumed for several hours, so, I can only assume that this food is the culprit. Like I say this is not the first time that this has happened to me after eating here. I am wondering if there is anyone else who has had this experience? I do not suffer from food allergies, or any food sensitivities, and am normally able to eat whatever I like. read more

This isn't my first visit. In fact I've eaten hear numerous times and at other Chang's locations in the PDX area. Chang's still remains the best of the Mongolian grill restaurants in my opinion. Their meats and veggies are always sliced consistently, appear fresh and are tasty. I love all their different sauce options and have perfected my own "perfect blend" over the years. The crunchy chunks of peanuts, sesame seeds, hot sauce or teriyaki sauce to finish the dish after grilling is also great. I deducted one star because the pricing has gotten out of hand; lunch was $14 I believe. Other than that service was good, the line thru the food and grill area was clean and fairly fast. Since we no longer live in the area it's a treat to eat here about once or twice a year. I'll continue to come back whenever we're in town. read more

This will be a fairly short review. We came here to try this place out for dinner. While going through the line i noticed the shrimp still had veins. I live shrimp but passed on them. Gross. I then got all my ingredients and had the cooks fry it up. They dumped a bunch of my sauce off the grill. Then sprayed a bunch of water in it. After they were done i was able to load it up with some teriyaki. I sat down and noticed my food was burned. I picked through the unburned portions. It was still pretty flavorless. We asked to speak with the manager but he want there. They offered me half off my portion (even though i barely are into it.) I would steer clear of this place. read more

If you didn't like it last time, try following the marinade instructions & customize to your liking. Don't forget to use the rice wraps. Personalized all-you-can-eat food and entertainment in one experience, that is what a Mongolian Grill is all about. It had been some time since our last visit to this style of restaurant. Dinner, at $15 seems several dollars more expensive than our last visit. Soup can be brought to the table if you want, or you can just head for the main coarse. There was a great section of meats including lamb, salmon, small shrimp and calamari as well as noddles and vegetable. Your choice of sauces are at the end. If you don't have a clue or two about what to use, just look up at the suggestion board. Timing is a bit of an art here, meaning that you might fill a bowl or two with your meats and veggies, and then have to line up against the wall as you progress towards the grill. The entertainment happens when you reach the counter and watch the food being cooked on a large semi-domed, very hot grill. They close about 60% of the restaurant in the evening because it's never all that busy. We love Changs!! But this location was a hot mess in so many ways, the buffet was missing lots of items and it was a mess. MY stir fry was awsome, because I made it and the awsome fry cooks rock!!! But the fifteen plus minute wait to get the rice, soup, wraps and sauces onto the table made my awsome stir fry no longer a hot meal. The soup? Skip it- water/ corn starch/ egg. NO flavor!! Left them my Knorr chicken bullion as a tip!! No team work in the dining room or pride in the kitchen. To top it off they over charged me!!
