The food was excellent--flavorful and generously portioned. We ordered takeout but had a quick look inside while we waited. The kitchen looked clean, but the dining area felt a bit dark and cluttered, and could use some refreshing. The staff was friendly, and the place was clearly busy. Most customers seemed to be picking up orders, with just a few dining in at the bar. We'll definitely be back for the great food, but takeout will be our go-to. read more

Well, when I went to the restaurant, I didn't see any customers eating at tables and then I discovered why, because when I sat down at the table they acted like what are you doing? They said they were just pretty much takeout though. You can sit and eat at a table if you want. I tried the orange chicken. Been a family go to for 15-20 years now for us growing up. For awhile the the quality had gone down, but the last couple times it's been better than it ever was. Thought i would give this place a chance again and sorry i did. Ordered pork chow mein with pan fried noodles, sesame chicken and beef broccoli. First they gave me sweet and sour chicken then when i went back argued with me that it was sesame chicken for a good 5 min. Even had my husband send me pictures and still told me it was sesame chicken. After pulling up a picture of what sesame chicken looks like his reponse was oh not all restaurants prepare the same way. Wth every chinese place i been too make sesame beef or chicken the same way. 2nd the chow mean and beef bocolli had no flavor at all. Had to load up on my seasoning just to be able to eat it. The decor hasn't been changed since it was a seafood restaurant, and by the looks of it, that was 30 years ago. Usually crap decor or no decor in a Chinese restaurant is a good sign, the food is always better. In this one, not so much, it's mediocre food and nothing special then so many mediocre Chinese places in town. Bottom line: you want good Chinese food, go to shandong. But if you're close by to rainbow dragon, wanna curl up by yourself with a bunch of unhealthy food and watch tv, this is a good enough place to go for take out. read more

Old school restaurant. Still cool (in a homey feel kinda way). Good cheap eats for Sunday lunch. Yummy Egg Flower Soup. I had the $6.00 lunch special. You choose 1 entre and it comes with a fried egg roll & fried rice. I chose kung pao chicken as my entre. I was asked how hot I wanted it and said, medium. Glad I did cuz it was on the edge of "lava" but was still full of fresh veggies and chicken. Very tasty. All our food came out super fast and super hot. Everyone loved their food and even had a little bit left over to take home. Not the greatest looking place inside but the food is good, cheap and on point. We have a teenager that loves this place and I imagine we'll be going through the menu from time to time. read more

The one constant in Portland. All around town has changed except the Rainbow Dragon. I've been coming here since the 90's. The same gentleman working here and they remember our names and preferences. The other thing that hasn't changed since the 90's is the price! If you haven't been here for the lunch specials bring $5.25 or $6.50 per person and you are basically set for the day. When I am here for lunch it reminds me of when we would sneak out of school for lunch and try to make it back before 3 period would start. Prices here are amazing and the portions are huge! We got a combination dinner number 3 (fried shrimp, Kung pao chicken, pork egg Foo yung, and pork fried rice), an order of mandarin chicken, and an order of the rainbow dragon special lo mein and between the two of us, we shared the combo and barely touched anything else because we were so full. We had four boxes of leftovers! The service was also excellent. Our waiter was very nice, prompt, and attentive, even with a full restaurant. We will definitely be coming back, soon! read more

We had a very satisfying dinner at Rainbow Dragon last night. We ordered Fried Shrimp, Vegetable Egg Foo Yung, and Chicken with Peapods and Waterchestnuts. . .and it was all good. The fried shrimp had a light crispy batter coating, and I'm glad the coating wasn't TOO hard (like a hard taco shell!) like at some other places. Egg foo yung was freshly-made and tasty, and we got FOUR patties whereas most other places give you only three patties. The chicken dish consisted of tender white meat chicken and plenty of peapods. . .and the serving was huge. We substituted pork fried rice instead of white rice to accompany the entrees, and the fried rice contained big chunks of BBQ pork which was nice. I was amused to see the place still has lots of nautical decor from its previous life as Biff's Seafood Restaurant. I used to like Biff's, and now I also like it there as Rainbow Dragon. read more

This is my second favorite Chinese place. It's a great neighborhood restaurant. The decor is a little offputting and reminds me of an 80's seafood restaurant. The food is always hot, served fast, large portions, and very good. My husband and I will order the family dinner for two and get at LEAST 3 meals for both of us out of it, if not more. I've never had any issues with service like other revieweres have complained about- staff are prompt and polite. One of my favorite Chinese restaurants in Portland. This is my boyfriend's favorite place to eat (he's been a diner here since the early 90s) and he took me here when we first started dating. I've been hooked ever since. We live out of state now, but try to make it here whenever we visit Portland. Their Egg Drop soup is delicious and their Chicken Sub Gum is on point; we can't find any dishes elsewhere that can compare. Great to bring a large group or come with family.
