Chan's Restaurant is a Brookings landmark! The Lo Mein is incredible, and the portions are humongous. I hate when restaurants pour the sauce all over to-go food (makes the food completely soggy and too salty). Chan's knows better, and if you ask nicely they put the sauce on the side for all items. The vegetables are fresh, and the stir fry is not as greasy as most Chinese food. The owners' eldest daughter is super cute and sweet, to boot. read more

The restaurant is bright and clean and reminds me of a diner, no problem. First thing I noticed is that the 2 waitresses were caucasian, but did see an oriental female come out of the kitchen. We started off with hot and sour soup. It had mild heat to it so I added some black pepper. The flavor was rich and very tasty, a good start. Next we had black bean and garlic shrimp (9.95) and I had requested that they take out the green peppers and substitute another veggie and the waitress suggested broccoli which worked perfectly. There was an abundance of medium sized plump fresh tasting shrimp and a lot of broccoli, bright green and crunchy, chunks of sweet onion, crisp carrots, mushrooms and water chestnuts, all bathed in a very tasty black bean sauce with just the right amount of garlic. Next came the Szechuan Shrimp and Scallops (11.95), with the substituted broccoli, onion, baby corns, mushrooms, carrots, and was listed as a spicy dish, but was not spicy. They had not asked how hot I liked my food and I had to request their hot chili oil to personally spice it up. Again an abundant number of medium sized fresh shrimp and lots of scallops, but they were small but delicious. White rice was served on 2 small plates and it would have been better in one covered rice bowl. The hot tea was strong and good tasting. A half carafe of white wine (6.25) went well with the dinner. The usual fortune cookie was fresh, crispy and sweet. One star off for the open plate of rice and the lack of spiciness in the spicy dish and not checking to see my preference. All in all, a very nice meal and we would certainly return! read more

Having eaten there before with no problem, everything changed. Ordered sweet/sour chicken, pork and shrimp to go and drove off. Opening the box, there was nothing BUT dry, stale shrimp, dry, tough pork and inedible gristly something called chicken. Even my dog wouldn't eat it!!! Everything appeared to be microwaved and was served in 5 minutes flat! Rather get canned Chinese than that tasteless, warmed over mess with no noodles, rice or anything on the side. I'll try again in 6 months and this time, OPEN the container before leaving. read more

I've been getting chinese food here for years and years. I've gotten so used to the food, I couldn't find much to complain about if I tried. It's your good old fashioned local chinese food joint. Called to place an order was put on hold for 15 min they never came back. Went to Chans and watched the waitress answer the phone and never go back to another customer. Would give it a 0 stars if I could. service was absolutely terrible. When we order chow mein she didn't tell him or ask whether we want to pan fried or not and as a result brought us a soggy mess of supposed fried noodles and then expected that we knew exactly what to order when we didn't live in the area. After that we heard waitress talking crap around corner and never even got offered water or refills at all. Do not go here unless you want to waste your money and your time read more

Avoid this place at all costs! Ordered vegie chow mein. Came with no noodles and had no flavor whatsoever. Called to complain and the lady said "you got what you ordered". The word "Mein" translates to "noodles". My wife ordered ma po tufu and there were 3 pieces of tofu included. This place is a rip-off. Spent $30 for awful "food". Again, avoid this place unless you like tasteless food at inflated prices. read more

We stopped here after seeing the reviews online...totally misleading!!! First off...the won ton soup was overcooked.. the won tons were over cooked. Then the chicken chow me in came with no description and was fried noodles. When I was surprised the waiter was short saying what wanted was pan fried. I declined the offer after seeing the food. I simply asked for explanation next time (if there ever will be) and she immediately went around the back and I could over hear her complaining loudly of my response about the noodles. I didn't tell her to take it back or change the order and neither did she offer it. Then after she never ever came back to offer refills. We had to use the hot tea and pour in our ice to have iced tea. The water tasted like right out of the faucet tap water which had a bitter weird after taste. I'd not recommend this place to the worst of my enemies. Oh and the pork fried rice was one piece of pork on top over cooked underflavored fried rice...no veggies no flavor. Horrible. read more

We loved the food at Chan's. The walnut shrimp is excellent, as are the Mu Shu pork and Kung Pao Chicken dishes. We traveled earlier this year to China and did not have food as excellent as this. The prices are reasonable and the service great. Go now and enjoy a meal at this most excellent restaurant. read more

Take out fried shrimp, breaded fried chicken and pork fried rice was ok but no napkins or utensils provided which doesn't necessarily mean take out to home. ???? Lucky I had a camp "spork" and paper towels in the car. Will go back and next time make sure needed items are in the bag. Next take out meal will be all meat, custom order....I hope. Kung Pao chicken no peanuts!!! Small isolated town, makes me homesick for old days, do be prepared. Helpful, considerate people. Ingredients may not match up, but big servings with a smile. No red wine, small selection of beers. Very fair prices. Nice place overall. read more

We have eaten in this restaurant in the past and considered the food/service tolerable. We chose to eat here again last week kind of as a last resort. This was the worst eating experience of any place in recent memory. The food was again, tolerable but the service was very slow. The waitress, though wanting to please, had limited command of the English language making communication difficult. Our table was not far from the restrooms. Any time the door to the restroom area was open the smell was horrible, could gag a maggot. It was so bad that my wife could not continue eating. I went into the men's room and saw that it was grossly unsanitary. Also, all the time we were there, there was a very loud banging (like someone hammering in nails) coming from someplace within the restaurant. I asked the waitress what was making the noise but she could not answer for she did not understand the question. Needless to say, we won't be back. read more

So we went to Chan's as we have done for years. The service is never great but this time it was awful. We were placing an order to go and the server kept walking past us at the front desk. She answered two other phone calls that came in while we were waiting. A line of about five people developed behind us and finally 20 minutes later she came and asked if we were ready to order. I told her we had been ready for a while. And she replied well I was busy. I said you took two phone calls that came in later and she replied angrily "I am the only one here". about another 45 minutes and our food was finally ready. Not going to eat here again. horrible customer service. If it's that busy then hire a second person. read more

All of us who moved to Oregon from California agree that Oregon is a wasteland for Chinese cuisine. But there's an exception. Chan's in Brookings serves fantastic Chinese food. It is small and very modest in decor and ambiance, but friendly service and great meal make up for all small shortcomings. Every time we drive by Brookings, we make sure we stop for lunch or dinner and have a fabulous time. read more
