Plenty of minced clams. * hubby two pieces fish & chips * combo seafood platter for me - one cod, 4 calamari strips, 2 oysters, 4 shrimp, and 4 oz clams. Cod & oysters were great. The shrimp was too salty and barely coated. The clams were non existent. The calamari strips were very wiggly. Great clam chowder ! It was thick and chunky. A bit pricey for a small "bowl" (size of a cup) at $11.50 and a bread bowl for $16.50. Service wasn't that friendly either (no smile, no greeting and wouldn't give any change for us so we could do the laundry). This was why I gave them 4 stars instead of 5. read more

Sat outside waiting for them to open. Had to listen to an awful argument with workers inside sceaming at each other. Once they opened, I walked in not to be greated or spoken to at all. While I sat there and waited for my to go order a woman who worked there continued to rant and rave about other employees and previous cutomers in front of me and others in the restaurant. I don't know if she was an owner or a manager or other but if a woker she should be fired and if an owner she should have more class. Tucked into a weatherworn corner of the Oregon coast, just off Lower Harbor Road, The Hungry Clam doesn't look like much from the outside. Hell, from the inside either. But what it lacks in square footage it makes up for in raw, greasy, glorious soul. I showed up on a foggy coastal afternoon, stomach howling louder than the sea lions down the road. The line was spilling out the door--locals, tourists, kids with wet hair from the harbor, old-timers in flannel. You could smell the fryer working overtime before you even made it to the porch. And you know what? That scent--hot oil, sea brine, and batter--was worth the wait alone. When I finally got my order--a large fish and chips, fresh from a kitchen smaller than my first roach-infested studio--it looked like something ripped out of a sailor's fever dream: thick slabs of fish, golden and bubbling, piled high like treasure on a bed of fries. The crunch? Unreal. Like biting into a secret. The batter hugged the flaky fish without turning it into some greasy tomb. The inside stayed steamy, soft, and ocean-sweet. The fries were those old-school diner fries--hot, salty, perfectly limp in the best way--and they begged for a splash of malt vinegar and a dunk in tangy tartar. I ate outside, at a weathered picnic table overlooking the harbor, with the gulls giving me the stink-eye and the breeze carrying the perfume of salt and fryer oil. Was it fast? Hell no. But when the kitchen is barely bigger than a broom closet and everyone in town is lined up out the door, you don't come here for speed. You come for the real. The food was dank, hella good, and unapologetically fried in the most beautiful sense. Some places try too hard. The Hungry Clam doesn't have to. First of all the food was fantastic but they're not set up for a crowd. We were told the wait was 40 minutes but waited well over an hour for our food. Absolutely disgusting!!!!! Just left there after having the oysters shooters and the $25 halibut and fries. Ohhhhhh my god the oysters were absolutely disgusting! They were gigantic, unflavorful and came in paper cups. The fries were wayyyyyy over salted and they were the day crinkle cut ones and they gave us about a handful of fries. The coleslaw was full of mayonnaise and had no texture or flavor. It was the absolute worst atmosphere inside we couldn't even stand it. One lunch plate cost $25 min. My husband and I come here occasionally. The food is consistently good. Nothing spectacular but decent for a fast food option. The fish isn't fresh but is cooked right. My biggest problem today is their prices. They've gone way up. My husband's 2 piece fish and chips - now $19. My usual fish melt with a side of Lays potato chips - $19. The woman taking are order wasn't friendly and appeared to have a cold. We're hoping we don't get sick with her coughing and sneezing all over everything. We can get cheaper lunches and better service (with a friendly greeting and a smile) down the road and the fish is fresh. We won't be back Hungry Clam. They'll wipe the counters and use the dirty rag to moisten their fingers to open to go bags. Terrible service. Not a friendly smile. They look miserable and don't want to work. The food was really good. The service was ??? The ambience says the food is really good and you're on the water so be happy with these picnic benches. We visited about five in the afternoon on a Monday in July. There was one cashier/waitress, she was taking orders, ringing them up and when they were ready doing the final preparation on them and delivering to wherever the people are sitting. That is too much work for one person at a popular beach shack restaurant. You have a line of people that want to eat and two cooks behind the counter. We were second in line, placed our order and waited a ridiculously long amount of time for the food to be done. Our order was for three meals. We ordered fish and chips, a bread bowl of clam chowder, and a chicken sandwich. I didn't look at my watch and I wish I did when we placed the order. I'm pretty patient and it would not occur to me to keep track of the amount of time it took to get the order.. . I don't recall waiting so long at another restaurant ever before for casual fast dining food. The only saving grace was that the food was so good. Everybody wanted more and with that length of a wait there was no way another morsel would be ordered ever, ever again. Hopefully, this was just a once in a while thing that they were understaffed . I have high hopes for the town of Brookings that eventually it might cater more to tourists. It looks like a sad, depressed town but so many people visit this area all the time. This restaurant deserves to succeed. We were drawn here by the location in the marina and the good reviews on the food. I hope people continue to visit it and order food and I hope they're able to give better service despite the fact that they made the poor choice to post a handwritten sign telling everybody to put up with the slow service or leave it. read more
