I've been coming to Chans for 10 years now, my husband even longer, he introduced me to it. This was our first time stopping at Chan's, and it was a great experience. Food wise and listening to Anthony Gomes. Great speakers in an intimate dinner setting. The food was tasty, LOVED the egg rolls and I had the General Tao chicken. Husbands meal was equally as tasty. The waitstaff certainly was hustling but also took care of our needs perfectly. The only area I would say needs improvements would be the men & woman's bathroom floors. They were both incredibly tacky. The rest of the bathroom, toilet & sink area were fine. I've heard really bad things about the food at Chan's for years. I was there last night for the Bruce Mattson show. 1st to all the haters out there, take it for what it is. Chan's is an institution, it has been around for over 40 years. The the ambience inside is really funky and cool. It's bright very cool colors and fun. Let's talk about the food. I had the best beef teriyaki I've ever had in my life. It was tender, thick and juicy They were really big too. boneless pork ribs excellent. Chicken wings were really good but they're big, and I could only eat one of them. There were three waitresses in the room. They were all season pros and very nice. The other thing you have take into considereation it's a live music venue and they have a lot of great bands that come into Woonsocket to play there. So you get the best of both worlds, you can go see live music and eat Chinese food. It doesn't get much better than that. Also we Got to meet the owner John Chan, an extremely nice man. Now, is it the best Chinese food in the world? No, but I've had a lot worse, believe you me. Will I go back? Absolutely 100%. I look forward to it. Stopped in for dinner with friends as we were in the area and for a local place kind of hole in the wall, the food was pretty good. Had all the typical options for a Chinese place. The food came out quickly and was hot when it came to us which was great. The service was great, super nice and attentive to what we needed. We also had two young children with us so they sat us in our own little room which was great cause the kids could be loud without interrupting anyone. I would not go and seek Chan's out but if I was in the area and needed somewhere to eat it would be an option. read more

Ate at Chan's on February 26, 2021. The Good The bowls of soup offer very generous portions. I had the wor mein soup; my friends each had a bowl of wonton soup. The small comes with 3 large wontons and 2 tender, sliced pork strips. The large comes with 6, count'em 6 wontons, and 3 sliced pork strips. Although the broth had a slight salty taste, it wasn't anything to truly complain about. The wor mein soup was everything I thought it would be. Wor in Chinese translates to "everything," and everything was in this soup. Chicken, pork strip, mushrooms, noodles, bok choy, the works. Again, slightly salty broth, but it was overall very good and a great portion. I ordered a chow mein sandwich and it was delicious. The chow mein was covered in gravy, and the bread was super saturated in it. Not many places offer chow mein sandwiches anymore; this is definitely something to try if you've never had it or if you're trying to find one. The egg rolls were stuffed and the filling didn't have an overbearing taste. I visited The Islander the previous weekend and the egg rolls, to put it bluntly, sucked. Overly seasoned filling with a terrible aftertaste. I liked the vibe of this restaurant. It reminds you of a Chinese restaurant you see in the movies. I hear this place also serves as a venue for live jazz and blues. This is something I would definitely want to check out in the future. The Not So Good The General's Chicken combo plate -- the chicken was overly battered; the crab rangoons had a generous portion of cream cheese stuffing, but lacked crab, and the rice tasted very bland. I feel a lot of Chinese restaurants are struggling to make a delicious fried rice; Chan's seems to be following suit. Although I didn't order one, I noticed a 12 ounce bottle of Budweiser cost $6.50. That is a bit pricey for domestic beer I would think. Our waitress was overall good in terms of taking our order and was friendly; she just didn't come to check on us during the meal. My friend wanted a refill of water and she was nowhere to be found. Overall, I enjoyed my meal and it's probably one of the better Chinese dinners I've had in recent time. I remember growing up and seeing advertisements for "An Evening at Chan's", advertising for the various concerts the establishment offers. I was always curious about the place. I will definitely return here for dinner, as I believe the "bad" items or "cons" of the establishment aren't deal breakers, but rather things that could be worked on. read more

I recommend this business for the music and for the host, John Chan is a long time legend and he brings the best musical talent. As for the food...it depends on your palate. For me, this is some of the worst Chinese food I have had. If you like typical American version of Chinese food that you would find in a mall, it may be enjoyable for you. For me, I would never eat here again, I tried it twice and found it horrible. I like more authentic Chinese food not the fast food version. They are making me add a star but not deserving of any star If you have a food allergy and for this review specifically CELIAC DISEASE stay very far far away from CHANS in Woonsocket RI!!!!! I became extremely sick because they told me my meal was gluten-free but in fact it was not!! They had a GF symbol on the menu next to my meal. I look back now realizing it was restaurant Era. I was very uncomfortable with the situation to start as we were there for a dinner show there were only two waitresses and they were not well-versed with the menu as far as gluten-free at least our waitress wasn't. She asked me to tell her if my meal was GF. She rushed me as I was trying to tell her I was deeply concerned and wanted to make sure I was going to be eating a gluten-free meal. I became so uncomfortable with her that I went to the other waitress to tell her that I am panicking about my order and I need more clarity so she did do the right thing and went to the kitchen, apparently the owner went and spoke to one of the cooks because there was a language barrier for the waitress. Our waitress came out and told me because the owner spoke to the cook my meal was perfectly gluten-free nothing to worry about and then she rushed away. Here's the problem the owner should have come out to me for full understanding but he did not. I questioned the supposedly FG noodles while I was eating them got about a quarter of the way through when I just stopped because I was scared but it was too late because even just to be cross contaminated with gluten will make me sick never mind actually eating them. We stayed for the show and like clockwork 3 hours later I was horribly sick!! We had an hour ride home back to Mass and nothing was open because it was late. I won't go into the gory details but there were four stops along the roads and highway at midnight! Because of the side of the road trauma it made being sick all the worse. It took me 2 days to recover from the initial sickness but with Celiac the damage on the inside can take anywhere from 6 months to years. This should of never happened to me especially since I was trying to be so diligent with them trying to have a voice, they just wouldn't listen. It's all about TRUST and CHANS can not be trusted!!!! read more

Step in to the past and walk into a real-deal jazz club for the evening. While you're there, treat yourself to some tasty eggrolls. I see some other Yelp reviews here, but #sorrynotsorry there's something wrong with the reviews if Chan's doesn't have at least a solid 4 stars. I mean: it's not often that I look forward going out to eat with the food being a pleasant AFTERTHOUGHT. We go almost every week for the amazing blues and jazz acts that grace the stage with the their talent. This isn't some small time place although the setting is intimate: Dizzy Gillespie has played here MANY times and just last week we saw Chris Beard "the prince of blues". The service and food is wonderful -- and the prices are affordable. If you live in Rhode Island and you're tired of the same-old things to do on a weekend night, make your life better and buy some tickets to a Chan's show. read more

I'm a former regular. This was my first time coming back since the pandemic. I'm not complaining about the service speed, which was slow due to a concert in their venue. I'm complaining because there was a small dead cockroach in my won ton soup. I didn't take a picture because I was honestly grossed out and shocked that it happened. I told the waitress and obviously they weren't charging us for any of the apps or drinks on our table... doesn't matter. There is no "make good" for finding a roach in your dinner. read more

Let me preface this review by stating this would have been a 5-Star recommendation if it were just for the music (Neal and the Vipers) and the Chinese food tonight, March 4,2023. Neal Vitullo played inspired, genius guitar and the Vipers were "on" all night! We had the Ginger Shrimp with scallions and garlic, excellent! Unfortunately, one of the waitresses let three drunk men in after the halfway point of the show, without paying for tickets I'm sure. The three drunk men stood at the waitress station "swilling" Budweisers, they were still being provided well after "Last Call" and dumping them on our table. Sad I used to like Chan's. I still like the music venue that they have inside the restaurant. It is the only reason I gave this place another star. Cool concept to have a live show in a small intimate setting where you can get a scorpion bowl and watch a jazz or blues band. Chan's has the old fashioned tiki bar/restaurant setup which I like. However, "what the hell happened to the food?" I'm not saying this used to be a 5 star restaurant but at the least the food was edible. Now it barely is. Honestly, some of the worst Chinese food that I have had in a while. Everything seems old, brown colored, and all of the dishes taste the same. Bad! How expensive is rice? I wish I could give Chan's a higher rating because there are some things that I really like about this establishment... unfortunately, there are some things that hold it back. So I have settled on 3 stars.... 4 star entertainment mixed with 2 star dining. The only reason I make the trek out to Woonsocket is for Chan's musical offerings. A blues fan myself, Chan's offers ample opportunity to catch some fantastic musicians here. I most recently caught Jeff Pitchell and his band the Texas Flood and the music was a very enjoyable experience. The host, John Chan (who I swear has not changed in appearance in the last 10+ years I have frequented this venue), is extremely welcoming and accommodating. He presented us with a choice of seats in the cozy club area, filled with large tables at which several parties may be seated. We got there about 30 minutes before showtime so that we could order and start dinner before the show began. Our waitress was as attentive as she could be... there should really be more staff on when the room is packed. It having been a very long time since last eating here... we opted to try out the buffet for $13 a piece. I wish I had checked it out before deciding to partake. The spread was very disappointing. There were approximately 10-12 options to choose from. I ended up with some piles of Pork Fried Rice, Spicy Noodles, Mongolian Chicken, Boneless Spare Ribs, and Golden Fingers. On my initial run through around 7:30pm, I really had to scrape together what was left in some of the containers to even have anything to put on my plate. On my return visit to the line closer to 8pm, the only thing that had been replenished was the Fried Rice. No fingers, a couple scraps of spare ribs and chicken, etc. To top it off... it was cold. The flavor was alright, but made less so by not only the temperature but the presentation. Who wants to put food on their plate when it already seems like it has been sitting there for an eternity. Dried out, picked over... Drinks were tasty and probably the best bet if you are looking to order something here. Delivered quickly, cold, and refreshing. I ordered a Mudslide as dessert and it was delicious. My date ordered a Scotch and Ginger at one point and it was delivered in a large pint glass. An interesting choice but who says no to such a large pour. There is a parking lot on each side of the restaurant with a good deal of street space available as well. Easy to get to. Tickets for the show were $20 and easily paid for through PayPal online off the restaurants website. I would return here in a heartbeat for a show but would be hesitant to plan for dinner again. read more

I've ordered from here for delivery and pick up a few times. I am a fan of the PuPu platter more than my kids. My favorites are the boneless spareribs and the golden fingers. I haven't had anything else but the platter and alway sub the egg rolls for extra ribs. Actually I had their "fried" rice once and was NOT a fan. I haven't been inside to get the full feeling of Chan's. I heard they have a band on Friday's. Once I strike up the nerve to go, I'll give another review.
