I recently attended House of Chan Rest. in Woonsocket, RI before an 8:00 PM concert next door to the restaurant. I made 6:30 PM reservations, feeling we had plenty of time to have dinner and walk next door. I will never recommend this restaurant! We arrived on time, were seated right away. They were very busy so we were patient. However after 40 minutes I flagged down wait staff to get service. When our food finally arrived at 7:30, it was not how but almost cold. I do not blame the wait staff, they were working very hard, I blame management. It is up to management to assign tables to wait staff. I will never waste my money on House of Chan again. read more

I wanted to try this place because I had picked up a gift card through my job for them, and had always wondered about them as I walk and drive by their building all the time. I wish I could take my dinner back. Let me elaborate... I placed a to-go order, I ordered the dinner combo plate #3(wings, pfr, chow mein), some fried wontons, and a pint of pork fried rice, to share with my boyfriend and his daughter. The price was much higher than I anticipated, so when I got there to pick it up, I asked about the order. Turns out, they tried to give me crab rangoons, which would be no big deal, if it wasn't a $2 difference. I had them fix the order, and home I went. When my boyfriend opened his container and saw the three wings the meal came with, he was not too happy. The chow mein also threw us off because it was a brown gravy, and there was a lot of it. Then, the rice was the chan's rice and not the pfr, so I ended up having to have that. To put the finishing touches on the meal, the wontons had NO meat in them at all, and the hostess even told me thats what would be in them. Also, I ended up steaming my own broccoli when I got home to make our meal a little more appetizing. I have a favorite in town, the Great Wall, who makes the most delicious dumplings ever, and always seems to give us more than they say comes in an order. I would have ordered from them, if not for the gift certificate. I am usually one to keep menus as well, in case we want to order again from the place we got our food from at another time, and I was so disgusted with this meal, that I threw then menu out. Go with realistic expectations. This is "fine dining" in a Chinese restaurant in a small town. The food was good, thanks to the effective ordering techniques of two friends who ordered for the table. Nothing really stood out as needing to be ordered again but everything was good enough to eat. There is a bar, and they are inventive with their cocktails. Don't order anything off menu unless you know how to make it. Their bartender could use an app if he/she is unsure of the ingredients... Oh yeah, there's a buffet, but order off the menu. Been going to Chan's a couple of times a year for the past 10 or so years and I've never written a review. Generally, people say you don't come to Chan's for the food, you come for the music. Over the years, I've never seen a bad show. We were invited to see a comedy show there with another couple. We never heard of the guy. In the parking lot, we watched the guy on Youtube.... ugh. We figured, it was only $10. We got to hang with friends we hadn't seen in a while. The guy was hysterical !!! Another time we went to see the Peter Tork Blues band. I know what you're saying "That name sound familer". Yes, he was in the Monkeys. I thought it was going to be a disaster. Again, I was wrong. They were awesome !!! I left this review under the 'Chan's' listing too because I didn't know it was listed twice. Here is my review for the food. I would NEVER eat here again, ever since my grandmother got 5 cigarette filters in her chop-suey when I was a kid! From what I can see from other people's reviews, is that they haven't changed much since then. If they were in Los Angeles, they would have gotten an 'C' rating and got shut down! They deserve to be closed down. I definitely don't recommend this place. Chan's is disgusting as all of my friends and family know all too well. AVOID 100%. If I could have given a NEGATIVE 5 stars i would have. I realize that it's been 30 years or so since the cigarette filter incident, but once you are traumatized by something as disgusting as that, you never forget. Seriously, none of my friends or family dine here. There are lots of other BETTER Chinese restaurants in the area. I suggest going to one of those instead. Haven't been to Chan's since I was a kid. Was going to a show next door so I figured I'd take my friends out to dinner before hand. First we thought maybe we regretted our decision once we realized how bad the service was. Wait staff was unprofessional, rude, and inattentive. It seemed like a free for all. And to be honest I'm pretty laid back and easy going but it was that bad for me to feel this way. We really decided we regretted this when we got our food. It looked like it was frozen food, microwaved and then thrown on a plate. My vegetable low mein was undercooked and had one piece of broccoli in it. Not to mention I got my food almost 10 minutes after the rest of the table. My sisters food was very spicy when she specifically asked for it not to be. I could keep going on but I've made my point. This is a Rhode Island institution. Most noted for it's live entertainment, especially jazz and blues. Heard about this place 25 yrs ago, and finally stopped in for a Sunday night dinner. Not very crowded, but this wasn't a night where there was live entertainment. Decor is typical Asian, with some cool blues artwork mixed in. We got some of their dinner combo plates. My first observation of the dinner plates was the lack of interesting combinations. Seemed like you could choose rice and appetizers, lo mein & apps, or chow mein and apps. I would've liked some sort of entree dish (like kung pao chicken or beef with broccoli) with rice and one or two apps. Portions were good sized, food wasn't bad, and the prices were reasonable. My 5 star review is based solely on the entertainment and the venue. And with that, I saw my favorite singer and base player and that in itself deserves 5 STARS! We chose to visit Chan's to see Ana Popovic and her band with bass player extraordinaire, Ron Jonker! The show didn't disappoint and the venue added to my enjoyment and that's because of the smaller-than-a-concert-hall, dimly lit room that puts you up close and personal to the band and as such, you feel part of the whole experience, it was truly energizing and we walked out with big smiles! However, the food is an all together different story, one that nightmares are made of! Our dinners were part of the price we paid for the show and that was reasonably priced. The drinks were very good but strong and it ends there because when the food arrived, it was horrific. The chicken had a strange texture on it that made it hard to eat and aside from the plain meat type dishes, everything else was over drenched with; well, I don't want to call it sauce so I'll say, liquid. The taste of the entire meal went from no taste at all to strange and unrecognizable. Myself and a group of friends went to Chan's to celebrate my birthday. We thought that the jazz music with Chinese food sounded fun and we'd heard that the music is really good. Let me just state that this review is not about the music - the music is really great and the performers are talented - but is instead about the food and the overall establishment. The food is ok, nothing great but nothing too awful either. I had the General Tso's meal and the eggroll that came with it was actually quite good, but the General Tso's dish was overcooked and loaded with sauce. The drinks aren't too bad, my husband and I split a scorpion bowl (caveat: it's not a typical scorpion bowl that's red in color instead it's yellow) which was pretty good. The service was great and our waitress was very attentive and helpful. With all that being said, the decor is outdated and could definitely use an update. It's a really creative concept and the music alone makes it a worthwhile night out. Not sure I would go again, but if I did I would probably only go for drinks and the music. Also, we had a really difficult time buying tickets online for the show. There's two ways to buy (through their website or paypal) and there isn't any clarification as to what the difference is (why offer two ways when one suffices) and it was very confusing. When my husband called to reserve a table they made it sound like we all had to buy tickets together in order to sit together. "There are few times in life when a meal is so expertly crafted and planned that it's nothing short of genius." Unfortunately, this wasn't one of them. My girlfriend and I stopped in one night after a show at the Stadium Theatre. I had always heard about Chan's but had never found the time to go. Since we were there already, we stopped in. James Montgomery was playing but the 2nd (and last) set had already started. The owner (I think) was nice enough to charge us half price ($10) to get in. We walked through the double doors to one of the most unusual venues for music I've ever been to. We sat down on a bench along a long table and watched the odd mixture of people, furnishings, Chinese "art work" and incredible Blues. If you are an eclectic person, as I am, you would enjoy the atmosphere. So why do I rate this only 3 stars? The food sucks. It's probably the worst Chinese food I've ever had. Actually, it's probably the worst food I've ever had period. Luckily, I've forgotten what I had. For a while it haunted my dreams. So if you go, skip the food, have a drink and enjoy the show. read more

Best northern Rhode Island venue for jazz and blues music. I've been frequenting Chan's for many, many years and always enjoy the events and I think the sound system is fabulous! Nice to be greeted and seated by the owner and the waitstaff have been there for years. That says a lot! I was there last night after several years away and my biggest critique is that the interior of the club/restaurant and restrooms are in need of a complete overall and update. Chans beef teriyaki converted me back to eating meat. No joke. My first thing I ate after 6 months of no meat was the beef teriyaki. We love this place so much that we had our wedding rehearsal dinner here and everything was amazing. John Chan was a pleasure to work with and put together a perfect buffet for us and was willing to add whatever we wanted and it was all very reasonably priced. Everyone we invited loved the food and even at the wedding they were still talking about how great the rehearsal was. This is a tough one. The food is 3 stars. Nothing special, typical Chinese food. Not bad, but nothing to write home about. The club is a solid 5 stars though. Great room, very intimate, and the acts they get there are great. Its the type of place where you want to check the upcoming schedule frequently, and when there's someone good, grab a ticket as they often sell out the place. This is the place that you go to when you want to lose weight. I use to go there when I was a kid and the food was ok. My aunt would take us there when the Autumnfest came to town. For some odd reason, it has gone downhill. It reminds me of a place wher e the Nazi spies in Indiana Jones would go to have a secret meeting. I think they were going for retro...but they missed. I order the boneless spareribs and the rice with a scorpion bowl. The meat was tough as leather, the rice was scooped out with an ice cream cone scoop and to top it all off; when I was finished with my drink I found an insect at the bottom of it. Chicken and beef teriyaki are classics with good taste. Although the decor was out of date, the old school Chinese / tiki decor has come full circle into a time capsule of an authentic small town Chinese restaurant. Went here for some Chinese dinner around the holidays. Ordered take out only to hear that it was a 2 hour wait!!! Figured what the hey, its worth it! WRONG! I told the order taker that I wouldn't be back in town till around 7pm and to make sure it isn't cooked till around 7pm (it was 430pm when I placed the order). At 6pm I get a call that my food is ready to be picked up and has been ready for 20 minutes! I told the guy that I said not to have it ready till 7pm and my food will be cold when I get there. I asked if I could have it remade if it was cold and his reply was simply "You'll have to wait another 2 hours and that's not my problem; it's yours!" And hangs up! I get there at 7pm and sure enough my food is ice cold. And again its a 2 hour wait. So I take it home and put it in the microwave just to find out they forget half my order in the first place!!! This place is awful at the very best. The chicken wings were burnt and hard, egg rolls were cold and tasted worse then WalMart egg rolls and the Lo Mein tasted gross! STAY AWAY!!!! As a side note, I tried oordering Hong Kong Lo Mein (Chicken and Pork), but was told I could only order Pork or Chicken Lo Mein, not both! read more

I have no idea why I haven't been here before but now that I have I am so glad that I did! It is truly a Rhode Isalnd experience, no it is totally a Woonsocket experience. We were greeted at the door by the owner shown to a table in the most overly decorated Chinese room I've been in an years. Hanging on the wall over out table was a portrait of Myles Davis. We were handed menus and a drink list. The waitress was a nice chick from Woonsocket and honsetly said she didn't really know much about Chinese food but "people liked it." We ordered what we thought sounded good and it was! I had Beef with Tomatoes and hightly, highly reccomend it! Some local Jazz ban was playing loudly enough we could hear it without paying the cover and the lounge was filled with a great mix of customes that only Woonsocket could supply. Afreak show and a great meal what more can on ask. Hmm come to think of it we may well have been part of the freak show. The best part is we were in Woonsocket on a Saturday night and parked DIRECTLY out front. read more

Giving this rating due to the fact even though we are frequent customers we ordered takeout on Nov 3, 2018 and picked up at 5:45pm and the long haired, young brunette girl was extremely rude! I would have to concur with most of the other reviews here that Chan's just is NOT the place to go to for 'good' Chinese food... So, my husband and I went here tonight after a show at the Stadium Theatre hoping to catch some great Jazz music .... $15.00 each to get into the jazz show at 10:30 at night.. hmmm.. okay, never mind, we go to grab some quick food... ugh! I get a shrimp cocktail, which is sold for $2.50 EACH.... I'm thinking I'm going to get those jumbo shrimps that you usually get when you pay $2.50 each for them... no.... they are small, rubbery shrimp.... well, there was $10.00 down the drain. Then I order a tofu and veggie dish, in which I got exactly THREE pieces of tofu and all the rest was bok choy and that gross crap that most Chinese dishes come with.. I asked them to add broccoli and I got about 3 pieces of broccoli with it, too... yuck! My husband got some won ton soup, which was good,..... one victory... but then he got some beef fried rice and like others who stated here, it tasted like it had been sitting around for a few days.. not fresh-tasting at all.. The two things that were good were the Scorpion bowl and the waitress.... seems like everyone here agrees, do not come here for the food..... everything else is fine, but yeah... don't come for dinner... Had a restaurant.com coupon, ordered some takeout, Coupon stated that I only needed to spend a certain amount ($15.00.), nothing about dining in. I got to the restaurant and was told coupon was only good for dining in. After much deliberation, I offered to include an 18% gratuity, even though I was not sitting down to eat, The seating lady called her boss, wanting to charge me the full amount, I informed her that this was not fair, and she could eat the food herself, I was not about to be bullied into paying full price, we deliberated 5 minutes over a small discount. Why offer a coupon?, if your not going to honor it? Food is 70's style chinese food at best. Mediocore food I can deal with, just don't try to screw me. An embarrassing moment for all involved.
