My family wanted something different than what we usually eat. We remembered Chao Doi on the corner of Los Robles and Orange Grove. So happy we did. We've always have positive experiences here. Our go to option for Thai food in the Pasadena area. They have gluten free soy sauce! Great for gluten free and plant based diets. We enjoy the Pad Thai, Tom yum, Tom Kha, veg tofu soup, pineapple fried rice, Talay seafood. Pre covid we usually had take out, sometimes dined in which was ok. First timer & last timer. 1. Staff - Slow, lazy(?), inattentive. Only 3 tables were taken during dinnertime, including ours, but they stayed behind the register the entire time we were there. Only came out when we would walk over to them to ask for help. Had to do that multiple times to ask for hot sauce, to-go boxes, another to-go box because the first one was burnt, and our check. 2. Food/Drinks - No. Pineapple fried rice was soggy, spicy thai noodles weren't spicy at all, and our honey boba drink was oddly lukewarm even though they claimed to have blended it with ice. The "Sexy Crispy Basil Fish" or whatever it was called was good though. 3. Location - Amazing! Only a 3 minute walk from my house! Chao Doi Thai is my go to Thai place. Personally I think they have the best Pad Thai in Pasadena but everyone differs on how they like their Pad Thai so you'll have to be the judge. I usually order them for takeout through Eat24 and they most often arrive promptly within 20-30 mins. I tend to not venture far beyond Pad Thais and curries so I can't speak for much else. Sometimes I call to check if the food is ready they tell me not to call and just come in and wait I guess they are too lazy to pick up the phone. I always order Crab Lagoon as an appetizer, and It's never been good. Flat wonton triangles that are never crispy. Usually their entrees are OK, but not this time. The 'Spicy' Eggplant with chicken was watery, and had no spice at all. Very bland. The Panang Curry with beef was better, but was also very bland and had no heat at all. I highly recommend the salmon steak dish, it's super delicious, large portion, and for this price, it's a win-win situation and the best price in town for a meal of this quality. To be exact it is 3.5 stars, extra half star for service and attentiveness. The guy who parked my order called in to check when I was coming. He did so in a nice manner. The value is in the soup, i got the tom yum, decent amount of shrimp. If you get the small size it's enough to serve two people. The Curry was decent could be more flavorful and slightly thicker. The portion for the curry was small though, maybe because I got green curry and the eggplants filled up most of the jar. I also got the chicken satay which is a little bit of a failure tbh. It's dried and rubbery, no charcoal smokeyness or care was taken into the satay. The sauces were just sweet and not bursted with flavor. The mango sticky rice was alright, meaning the mango is good but that fruit and can be provided by a market. I wanted to get sticky rice with coconut sauce. The sticky rice was hard and stuff.... and the sauce was utterly sweet and not creamy, weird texture. I would order if it's closeby and you're craving otherwise there ware better options. read more

We tried this place out and really loved the food! We had pad see ew, panang curry, and pineapple fried rice. They were all great dishes! This place is Horrible at customer service. Ordered once while at the restaurant with only one other customer (already seated and eatting and it took 45mins to get our food. Snice the food itself was worth eatting again. I tried to order for delivery the next time. That took over an hour to arrive. I was told to wait time would be 30mins Top. No apologize was given and they expected a tip. The Food is delicious so I'll give them just one more time to redeem themselves. Please give better customer service. This is our go-to Thai restaurant when we're too tired to cook, or just want to have a meal out without dropping fifty bucks. We usually order through Eat24 (use the $2 weekend coupon!) and get it to go, but dine-in seating and service are fine. If you are vegan or vegetarian you have to tell them so, and be VERY specific about omitting fish, oyster, and shrimp sauce from your orders. Once you do that, they are very accommodating. BUT, do not assume they have the same definition of "vegetarian" as you. I've taken many omnivores here for dinner and they've all been very pleasantly surprised with their food.
