I would never give this place a dime of mine ever again, I walked out of here because of how rude either the owners or workers are. There is obviously a line that they don't give a fuck about. And the way they were talking to the guy who was patiently waiting in line before me after they just took someone else who walked up to the counter was so bad. Not them justifying and doubling down on what they did instead of asking hey who's next. Again, this place doesn't deserve a dime. We made a list of potential tamale spots the evening of December 23, knowing we were cutting it close to find some on Christmas Eve. This was our first stop on December 24, and we're so glad it was! The moment we walked in, we saw the team hard at work in the back, busily making fresh tamales, which immediately gave us hope. We left with 5 dozen tamales in a variety of flavors: chicken, pork, beef, and cheese. While we wish the flavors were labeled a bit better, it didn't take away from the experience. The tamales were fantastic--the masa was light and fluffy, and the meat-to-masa ratio was spot-on. They were a hit with our family on Christmas Day, and we're already planning to return next year. The pan dulce were pretty good! Not amazing but certainly tasty and fulfilled my craving. There's a small selection and they also sell gelatinas, a few drinks, and tamales. The concha wasn't super dry and had a nice structure to it on the inside! The empanadita cremas aren't super sweet and yummy. Haven't tried the other ones yet but I'm sure they taste good too. If you come here, be prepared if you don't speak any spanish? I'm not sure if all of them only spoke spanish but the worker we spoke to only spoke it. 8:30am- Was around the area and decided to stop by per a coworker's recommendation of the sweet bread (conchas). Located right on the corner, street parking only on the side street or directly in front of store. I wasn't greeted when I came in neither was there a smile on the young lady face while I tried to figure how to place an order. Eventually the people who came behind me went on to grab a tray and I knew what to do. No customer service skills at all, should smile at least when people walk thru the door. Well when you come in you grab a tray and some tongs and proceed to grab the backed goods, when done you take your bread to the counter and they bag them for you. Not All Conchas Are Created Equal haha. With that being said, this review is only for the conchas since that is all I have had thus far. Their Conchas are the best. Not sure what they put in them compared to other conchas out there, but they are just right! fluffy, soft, tender, the right amount of sugar, and that delicious crunchy chocolate, vanilla or strawberry coating leaves you craving for more. The location is small and parking is residential / tends to be a bit tricky but quality and price ($) are worth the trouble in my opinion. This one star review is only for the review of their Tamales De Pollo. These are some of the worse tamales I have tried. I did not like them at all, the masa and it's consistency and flavor is not good. Nobody at home liked them so I threw them away :-( Their pan dulce is top notch and hard to beat, their bolillo is one of the best around, but their tamales are terrible and I hope they remake their recipe for the tamales. Ugh so I have gone back very very few times to this bakery after my initial review. Went in a couple nights ago since I figured what's the harm getting a couple of items from there. We were looking for two types of bread specifically and when I didn't see them in the case, I (very nicely and like a normal decent human being) asked if they were planning on bringing anything else out soon. Sometimes fresh bread is almost ready to come out and you just have to wait 5 mins or so - depends on time of day of course but I just thought I'd ask. The woman at the counter with the arm sleeve tattoos (about 20-30yrs old) was so rude when she snapped back that that was all they had and nothing else. I don't know if she was just having an off day or what but coupled with past incidents, it made me realize they haven't changed and I should just try to find another Mexican bakery. Also, when I arrived, there were no clean trays or tongs and a different, older lady was wiping them down next to the cashier. A couple of trays and tongs had already been cleaned but hadn't been placed back in their normal holding area and again, instant attitude when I asked if I should get one of the already cleaned ones in front of her. And honestly, the quality of the bread has gone down. Almost everything is dry or old. The only bread that is still good is their bolillo. read more

This part of Orange Grove Blvd. feels like being in Mexico (I assume) and Chapala is the main bakery. Grab a tray and tongs and help yourself to the various pan dulce (sweet pastries like conchas, some looked like muffins, croissants, cake, empanada style fruit pies, etc.) baked on the premises. The cookies are by the register in a case and you have to ask for them. They make custom cakes, fancy looking layered jello shaped like a cake, tamales and tortas. On weekends you can get menudo. * Cake with elote: A simple, good, moist yellow cake made with vanilla, eggs, sugar, etc. I liked the addition of the corn kernels towards the bottom of the cake. * Long horn: Not sure what it's called but it was firm and dense, dusted with cinnamon sugar, moister inside very nice. I've had these before and they're usually drier. Chapala's seemed better/fresher. * Chocolate chip cookie: Not like the type of chocolate chip cookie I'm used to, crisp and dry with chips on top, more like a shortbread type cookie There are a few tables inside. This is a wonderful Mexican Bakery, in a spot in which two different indifferent Latin American oriented bakeries once existed. Their conchas are quite small and delectable, and the bolillos usually fresh and wonderful. The quality of this bakery is testified to by the long lines that appear when the afternoon conchitas are ready. The two previous bakeries in this spot were rarely full.
