A first visit to the Gold Coast's Australian-inspired brunch favorite delivers decent plates and a service lapse strange enough to override them. Chapel Street Café and Restaurant has been on our radar for a while, one of those spots that keeps turning up on OpenTable and Google Maps with a reputation good enough to make you wonder what you were waiting for. When we finally sat down to book a Saturday brunch reservation, we were genuinely excited. We should have paid closer attention to how easy that booking was. We had a table in under fifteen minutes from the moment we started looking, for brunch, on a Saturday, at a restaurant this well regarded. That kind of last-minute availability can mean a restaurant runs a tight ship. It can also be a warning sign. We chose to believe the former. We were wrong. The dining room backed up the hype, at least at first. We arrived to a full house and a kitchen clearly in motion, and everything passing our table on its way to someone else's looked at least decent, some of it better. That energy made the wait for a hostess to seat us feel like a reasonable trade-off. The patience wore thinner once we were seated. Our server took a long time to make his first appearance, long enough that we had time to notice the line on the menu disclosing a 20 percent gratuity added automatically to every check. We didn't think much of it in the moment. We would. What followed was an odd bit of sequencing: our food arrived before our coffee. When the coffees did show up, they were wrong. Credit where it's due, it wasn't our server who caught the mistake, it was the hostess, who noticed it, took the cups back herself, and worked with the barista to fix it. It was the first of several moments that morning when the people who weren't assigned to our table did more for us than the one who was. Because after that, our server essentially vanished. He never returned to check on the coffee mix-up, so we never got so much as an acknowledgment of it, let alone an apology. We never got the chance to ask for hot sauce, or for jam for our toast, because he never came back to ask if we needed anything. At one point he delivered a plate to the table beside ours, looked directly at ours, sitting cleared and empty, said nothing, and walked off. We had a clear line of sight to him for most of the meal: chatting with other servers and staff, checking his phone, twisting his rat tail between tables. Whatever was happening in that dining room, it wasn't a server drowning in a Saturday rush. By his own body language, he was not, to borrow the industry term, in the weeds. He had simply stopped working our table. Our plates sat cleared on an empty table for at least fifteen minutes before we managed to flag down a different server to ask for the check, and to request that the automatic gratuity be removed given everything above. She was gracious about it, agreed without any pushback, and we watched her walk over and relay the request to our server directly. He still never came by. Neither, at any point that morning, did a manager. That's the part that's stuck with us. This wasn't a kitchen underwater or a floor that had outrun its staff; the rest of the team was clearly capable of covering for him, twice. The food we ate was decent, maybe better than decent. But a restaurant that bills you 20 percent for service automatically, and then can't produce so much as an apology when that service doesn't happen, has a problem bigger than one server twirling his hair by the kitchen door. It was a genuinely strange way to be treated on a first visit, and it's the reason, decent food or not, we won't be back. The bottom line: Good food, undermined by a server who checked out early and a 20 percent gratuity that got charged whether he showed up or not. read more

Very convenient cafe connected to the lobby of the Marriott. They'll let you charge to the room, which worked great with our daily hotel credit. My wife had a coffee and we grabbed a bag of their donuts. The donuts were so delicious and hot! The coffee took a little bit but they had a steady line of customers every time. The food was excellent. We got the oysters and calamari to start. We got a great Aussie red wine (Penfolds). We got the lamb rack and the bucatini. However, the staff definitely needs to get working in a better flow. We arrived 5 minutes before our reservation, and were the first people to be sat. However, the entire meal took over two hours, and we waited a long time to pay. It took over an hour to get our entrees after ordering, and we waited close to 30 minutes to pay after our food was taken- even when we expressed that we needed to pay quickly. We ended up being late to a tour. Very simple fix though, and I hope the service gets a little quicker. It's a brand new menu so hopefully they get used to it so the service gets a little quicker. read more

The food just was ok, I'd recommend sticking with pastry items as those seemed to be consistently good. The biggest disappointment here was the service. They are very upfront about the fact that they automatically add 20% tip to the bill to ensure living wages for their waitstaff - yes, all for it. But the waitstaff was very indifferent, and I can't help but wonder if it's because they were not working for tips. It is still a service industry, and the service was quite disappointing. Very slow, had to ask for every coffee refill, not even a "you're welcome" when we said thank you. Definitely got the feeling we were bothering her with our presence. It's a relaxed atmosphere and we didn't feel rushed in any way - just make sure you are not in a hurry because they are not rushed in any way either. The exception is the guy putting together takeout orders, he was also tending to tables and was very quick and polite. The two servers and the hostess, not so much. We won't be back. read more

Yesterday Monday August 4, 2025, mu wife and I dined at Chapel Street with our new neighbor. It is an experience we expect not to repeat. My wife and I ordered the lamb burger. The waiter said it was his favorite thing on the menu and that it was normally served medium. We both asked for medium rare. It arrived well done, dry and essentially tasteless. Our neighbor ordered Melbourne Parma, which the waiter declared was his favorite thing on the menu and when informed it was a large serving she said she would take the remainder home. When she ordered the entrée she ordered a beer. After three reminders the beer arrived when she had almost finished her meal. She ate half the entrée and declined to take it home! This brings me to the service. In a word it was simply appalling! The waiter seemed remote and barely interested in taking our order. Each thing we ordered was apparently his favorite thing on the menu which defeated the validity of any recommendation. The argument and/or horse-play going on in the background between the server and the girl at the front desk seemed to consume all their attention and may account for the poor service. In any event it was altogether unacceptable in any public restaurant. read more

Very disappointed with my experience. There is an automatic 20% gratuity to the bill, so no matter what, the staff will not feel the need to provide good service, nor care about your experience. We were seated and waited well over ten minutes for our server to bring us water, and when they finally got to us, there was no "welcome in" or "how are you doing". Dropped off glasses and left, we did not see them again for over twenty minutes. Thankfully, the owner and general manager noticed us and took our order. He was very nice and we appreciated his help. However, once we got our food, we never saw our server again until we asked for the bill. We were never asked how our food came out, we were never offered refills on our water, we were never checked upon or cared about. We waited forever to get our check after asking for it, and once our server dropped it off, they didn't say a word, no "have a good day" or "thanks for coming in". The food was good, but the service was genuinely the worst I have ever had. No matter how good the food and ambiance are, bad service can ruin almost everything. As someone who works in the service industry at an establishment where there is ZERO automatic gratuity, I have come to appreciate working hard for your livelihood, and providing great customer service, especially for first-time patrons. read more

I went there on day two . Despite a few hiccups, which are to be expected being brand new, the food and service were excellent. James' welcoming greeting as host and John's excellent service are a mirror of the excellent example of A-1 hospitality attitude. I had breakfast and ordered the zucchini fritters with egg and salmon. What a delicious combination. They will accommodate substitution requests. I asked for scrambled instead of poached. I enjoyed the coffee and also bought 2 pastries to take home. The pastry was tastry but smaller and overpriced compared to other on-site items made in the neighborhood.
