The pizza and kale Caesar were phenomenal, I'd recommend getting whipped ricotta crust dip. 10/100. The service and ambience were also amazing too. The only reason this isn't 5 stars is the pizza is small for the price. If you're eating for 2 you will need to at least order 2 pizzas or an appetizer or you will be leaving hungry. For a $22 pizza it should be bigger in my opinion! I will be back :)
Fun Guy 5/5 - creme fraiche, cheese, mushrooms, caramelized onions, garlic, chives I love the slivers of garlic and the abundance of mushrooms on the pie. All American Cheese Pie 5/5 - tomato, basil, gouda riserva and other cheeses Cannot go wrong with this! The dough is thin and crispy. We did take out/pick up. Upon walking in, two individuals acknowledged me to help. We would love to sit down and eat, the space is dark and industrial like. I went around 6:30pm pn a Sunday and there seemed to be a few seats available. There's this false notion online that it is impossible to grab a seat. It's next to a Reanimator Coffee shop I didn't know existed. The menu is simple. The pizza pies themselves are pretty small, 12 inches in diameter.
Pizzas are so good!! Not too doughy, perfect cheese to sauce ratio, and the crust isn't overly bubbly or burnt but still crispy. We got the pepperoni and the fun guy with a side of dipping ricotta which I highly recommend. Pizzas came out fast and the restaurant is so much bigger than I expected! Only complaint is the pizzas are a bit expensive for the size, definitely recommend getting two pizzas for two people.
Char has been on my list of places to go since I saw it on the news. They open at 4pm, so I made reservations. Glad I did, because it was packed by 4:30. Our server was exceptional. I don't know his name, but he was African American and had the best personality. The place was dimly lit, I wished the lights were turned up a bit more. It was almost too dark for my liking. I want to be able to see my food. At any rate, here's what I ordered: First up, was the Pepperoni with tomato, cheese, and hot honey. It was not too cheesy or too much tomato sauce. The hot honey added a nice flavor and spice. The heat level, to me, could have been hotter, but it was still good. 3/5 The second pie I tried was the FUN GUY with caramelized onions, creame fraiche, roasted mushrooms, garlic, and chives. I added hot honey for $1.00. This pizza's stand out was the caramelized onions. They had a nice texture and taste that blended very well with the cheese. 5/5 The third and final pie for the evening was the Vodka Sauce with cheese, garlic, and black pepper. This was my favorite of the three. It was creamy, but it didn't wet the crust or make it soggy. The taste was top tier and a nice pairing. 5/5 All of the pizzas were crispy all the way up to the crust. They were cut into perfectly sized slices - which made it easy to eat. So y'all know I needed to try the dessert. I just picked based on the names I liked. I decided to go with the Chocolate Cream Pie with Chantilly cream and an Oreo bottom. It was not as sweet as I thought it would be. It's a chocolate lover's dessert. It was too much chocolate for me (I know, I know, but I already told y'all I just picked ones by the names I liked). 3/5 The next dessert I tried is the one I HIGHLY recommend and that is the Baked Alaska. This was soft serve chocolate, crushed hazelnuts, with a chocolate chip blondie at the bottom and toasted Meringue on top. This was soooo good. Everyone needs to get this! 5/5 Char is worth the visit. Just make sure you pack your patience because parking is tough. Til we eat again...
We've been wanting to try Char since learning that the owner opened a restaurant in the city. Apparently, he got his start using a mobile pizza oven in our hometown. We were also thrilled that the restaurant is BYOB and takes reservations. Char is in what was once an industrial space that has been split in two. One side is the restaurant and the other a coffee shop that was closed when we were there at 7 p.m. We started with the meatballs (there were 3 so enough for each of us). We loved the taste and interesting texture. There were bigger pieces of onion which we liked and almost a crunchiness to the texture. Maybe from the breadcrumbs? The kale Caesar salad was covered in Parmesan cheese and had a refreshing hint of lemon. As for the pizzas, they were all delicious! Because there were 3 of us, we shared 3 different ones, the pepperoni, the Fun Guy, and the vodka sauce. My favorite of the 3 was the pepperoni with the combination of sweet and savory from the hot honey drizzled over the crispy pepperoni slices. The vodka sauce was equally fabulous, and the Fun Guy with the caramelized onions and the variety of mushrooms was also a winner especially for those of us who love mushrooms. Finally, a mushroom pizza with plenty of mushrooms! Each pizza had a thin, crispy crust, a result of being baked in the wood oven. Overall, we loved Char and wish the owner much success. He even delivered one of our pizzas to our table which was nice. Be aware the parking situation isn't great and that you may have to walk several blocks.
Decent food, but the service unfortunately left much to be desired. I came here on a Friday evening, which I understand is a busy time, but the wait time to get our food was insane. I came with 3 others and ordered 2 pizzas: pepperoni and Margherita. We waited patiently for our pizza to come, but 45 minutes passed and we were wondering if the kitchen had somehow forgotten our order. We asked a server, and when he checked on it he said it would be another 15 minutes. Based on what we could see, the kitchen seemed to only be baking one pizza at a time. One hour later, we finally got our pizzas. The pizza had a nice flavor and had a nice crispy crust. Overall, I think the pizzas were decent, albeit on the small side. We only ordered 2 with the intention of ordering another one if we were still hungry, but given the wait time for the first round, we didn't want to waste more time. We even asked a waiter what the wait time would be to get another pizza in case the first round was an unfortunate mishap where our order got lost, but he told us it would be another hour. I feel like such a popular restaurant that serves pizza should not only have such a long wait time. Char has good pizza, but the kitchen logistics need some rethinking. At the very least, staff should have warned us about the wait when we're getting our table. The pizzas were pretty good, but I don't think they were worth the wait.

We ordered the kale Caesar, marinara pizza, fun guy pizza, ricotta crust dip, and some soft serve for dessert. The marinara was great. Super thin crispy crust with delicious tomato sauce topped with thinly sliced garlic and basil. This paired really well with the ricotta dip and I'd 100% recommend getting it. It made the pizza even better. The dip was sweet which I didn't expect and added a nice contrast to the savory pizza. The fun guy was also good and had a very strong mushroom flavor as you can imagine. I noticed a few different types of shrooms on the za. This pizza was about equally as tasty as the marinara. Kale Caesar was also great. Very well dressed with plenty of cheese. I'd also recommend the soft serve. The brown butter orange swirl was delicious- orange flavor was subtle. I'd rate this place a 4.5. Kinda pricey but I think worth it. Food took a while to come out tho. Friday night was very busy.
Good Za and cozy atmosphere. Got the Vodka and the All American. Vodka was okay, All American was very good. Meatballs were very cold by the time they got to our table. Pizzas are on the smaller side, closer to personal pizza sizes. Crust dips were pretty good. Overall, decent spot if you're in the neighborhood and want some pizza!
Char absolutely nailed it. The pepperoni and vodka pizzas were next level, a perfectly crisp crust with just the right crunch and that signature char that makes every bite addictive. Amazing music, dim lighting, and a great vibe to match the food. Easily one of the best pizza spots in Philly.
Came here while in town because I saw my foodie friend Deezy that is also a Yelp Elite give them a great review. And let me tell you, he was right! I was alone and what I ordered seemed like alot but the food was so good that i ended up eating it all!! I ordered the following; Kale Caesar Salad $15.24 was excellent and I ate the whole bowl, however it is sharable. The Spicy Peperoni Pizza $20 with hot honey! It's actually spicy so if you don't like spice, this is not for you. However, I absolutely love it. Thin and charred crust. Small Peperonis. Strawberry-Matcha Twist Soft serve. - really good and light soft serve perfect to balance the meal. This meal was great, I met the owner, supper friendly and I heard he's in his 20s too. I would come back here. The restaurant shares a space with a bakery but it's big with lots of natural lighting and good vibes.
FOOD We ordered the corn pizza, all-American cheese pizza, and baked Alaska. The corn pizza had an incredible garlic base, and the onions added to the flavor exponentially. My only caveat was that I wouldn't call it a corn pizza. I wish there was an element of sweetness to it like a pureed corn drizzle, but just sprinkling corn on top didn't do it for me. The all-American cheese pizza was great as well. The crust on the pie was light and crispy. The sauce wasn't too oily, but I did wish the pizza was a tad saucier. There was basil interspersed, but I thought more could be added to round out the flavor. I was a bit hesitant to try the baked Alaska, as I'm not the biggest fan of meringue. However, I found it to be the star of the show-- light and pillowy and the vanilla flavor really shined through. The soft serve also wasn't too sweet. SERVICE The staff are very kind and friendly! They also offer complimentary Lactaid, which is incredible. AMBIANCE The space is shared with Reanimator Coffee. There is spacious seating, though the place does fill up fast. I recommend making a reservation online or by calling ahead. PARKING Paid street parking is available at a limited capacity. read more
The pizza game is strong here in Philly and that's coming from a native New Yorker. Pizza is in my blood and I take my pizza very seriously. Char has got some serious charm to it with its almost fancy but laidback industrial chic feel to it. The details in the space and the food, add an attentive and friendly staff to bring it all together, make for a solid dining experience. The carby discs of flavor truly shine from their quality sourced ingredients. The crust is light but chewy with a great char and crisp to it, maybe a touch too chewy as your jaw can start to hurt a bit towards the end of the pie. A few minor tweaks that I thought would make the pies be exceptional but fell a little short in some areas if i'm going to be super critical. It's still a solid 8.1 in my books, with a few things I would've liked some more attention to would've brought this up to a 8.5 but by no means is this a slouch. It's great pizza nonetheless and i'd happily come back. Overall I was happy with it despite my lack of enthusiasm but don't get me wrong, it was still delicious. Limited menu but the pizzas were delicious! We had the pepperoni and fun guy pizzas, as well as the meatballs and winter salad. It is a spacious spot with a warehouse feel to it. Service was attentive. Would definitely recommend! read more

Some of the best pizza I had in a minute.. We also tried that's not shown in the pictures (Vodka Sauce, (Special) Short Rib Pie & Marinara (v.)) Definitely will be returning to try the square pie and their desserts. read more
We always get their special pizza because it is nothing short of amazing! I was dying to try their chocolate cream pie and Viraj, the owner, made it happen in spite of being extremely busy. The chocolate cream pie was absolutely phenomenal and the hype is real guys!!! I wasn't ready to go back home without trying it and it was worth every penny. We also had the corn soft serve which was delicious - I could taste some condensed milk which I love. I can't wait to come back and try more of their specials! I wish lots of success to the team of Char! read more
Love that the place is BYOB. So my friend and I brought a bottle of wine. To start we spilt the Kale Caesar Salad and I was really surprised how good it was and so fresh. For pizza I got the Pepperoni that had Mike's Hot Honey and I added Ricotta to it. 10/10. The only thing I wasn't fan of the crust it was a little too burnt for me but I'm not much of a crust person anyway. Service great as well read more
Realllly enjoyed this place. Came here on a whim with some friends and we had a great time. It was stylish inside, while still having a cozy atmosphere. The wait staff were all really kind, we even got free ice cream at the end of our meal! (1900ice-cream at that) the flavors were corn (?????) And blueberry. Surprisingly delicious. And the pizza was amazing. We were sat right near the brick oven so we saw each and every pie being prepped and cooked. 100% will be coming back read more
I love char on pizza so i knew this one had to be good. I met the owner first during my interview for a cook position and super down to earth guy with a cool vision. Unfortunately, we couldnt figure out scheduling so i never got to work for him. Food wise, it was great, lived up to his name. Id say the perfect cross between neopolitan and nyc style. Basically a less soggy neopolitan pizza. Not sure what he did with the new school pizza but i really enjoyed that one, had more punch than a traditional margarita pizza. read more
The hype is real. The pizza is just consistently good every time. Viraj knows his stuff. Keep In mind it's a small wood oven so if it gets busy you may have a longer wait for your pizza but just make sure you bring a bottle of wine or two, order the kale Caesar to start, and just relax. It's worth it.Also, no one is talking about the ice cream. The ice cream is my favorite soft serve. read more

Got takeout, service was fine. It really saddens me to leave this review because I've heard this place is phenomenal and maybe I ordered the wrong thing, I got the margarita pizza. To be honest with you, it's lacking a lot of flavor. There's barely any cheese and sauce, frankly it just feels like I'm eating a slightly flavored cracker. I did love the thinness and the crust of the dough but outside of that, char is unremarkable. read more
Food Margarita pizza and Fun guy was both amazing! 10/10 Atmosphere: little cute shop with an open kitchen, where they fire the pizza, it is mostly self service Service: are we on the super nice, had no problems with the service although you get your own utensils, and there are no waiter service Tips: no need for reservations. Came here for dinner. Cool big converted space. Lots of seating room. Its more of a help yourself space. Order at counter, they bring your food and go back up to pay. Menu is fairly limited, just a few apps and pizza selections. I tried the vodka, pepperoni and mushroom pizzas. All were excellent neopolitan style pizzas. Portion size is bigger than personal but not enough for 2. My favorite out of the bunch was the pepperoni which came with hot honey. Downsides is they only have 1 pizza oven so it took us 45mins-1hr for the pizzas to come out. Upside: delicious pizza and byob! This might be my favorite pizza in the city. Well done! read more

Came here with a group of six friends on a weekday evening for dinner and shared a few pizzas and dessert. The ambiance was really cool - very modern, high ceilings, casual-cool kind of a feel, but still warm and inviting and busy. You order at the register, which is further inside the restaurant near the kitchen, and it was a bit packed to stand there waiting your turn to order. The food is then brought out to the table. We started with the Kale Caesar, which they were able to make with a non-anchovy dressing to make vegetarian. This was really good and they had lotsss of parmesan on it which was perfect. We shared the Funghi, the Vodka, and one of the seasonal specials with corn. All the pizzas were delicious! The vodka sauce was really really good especially. Each of the crusts were pretty thin but the slices packed flavor. For dessert we had the chocolate cream pie, really creamy and not too sweet. Would come back to Char and definitely would bring a group here for a delicious meal no one will complain about (also love that the chef is young & from a South Asian background!) read more

I'll start by saying the only reason this didn't get five stars is that it took an inordinate amount of time to get the pizza. To the point where I thought we were forgotten as there weren't that many tables...super friendly service but the oven can only cook seemingly 1-2 pizzas at a time so it takes a WHILE (probably ~40 minutes order to table). But if you have the time, the pizzas are amazing. Started with the short rib special. This was pretty good. I didn't feel like the salsa verde added much. Crust ever so slightly burnt but in a way that I enjoyed. The true star, though, is the Fun Guy. The caramelized onions on this pie elevated it to another level I've never experienced and may be one of the best pizzas I've ever had. Would absolutely come back for this alone. The space is hip. BYOB and chill overall with tons of tables. read more

The square vodka pie is maybe the best slice I've had in Philly. Well worth the extra $9 for the upgrade The standard pie was also really good Service was definitely on the slow side but its byob so as long as you aren't in a rush it's a nice place to hunker down for some grub read more

Spontaneously stumbled upon this gem when I had a craving for a slice of pizza. Went inside to check it out and came out with a slice of freshly baked tomato pie to go. It was very flavorful! It took me about 5-7 minutes to sit down so I could eat it, at which point, the bottom was a little soggy, but I can imagine that eating this fresh in the restaurant, you wouldn't run into that issue. Definitely will be coming back! This place was POPPING! read more

I suggest you get your pizza soon because I foresee this place will be extremely busy. Congrats to Viraj for getting his spot! I first had a taste of Char two years ago, unintentionally, when I went to the Attic Brewing Co. and saw Viraj slinging pizza. I thought it was cool and decided to give it a try. Pizza was bomb at that time, and I see it hasn't changed! Went to the new spot and got the New School and Corn Pie. That corn pie was my fav. The summer flavor vibe with a hint of Calabrian chili and caramelized onions was a great marriage. Don't sleep on the New Guy; burst of flavors (tomatoes, fresh herbs, and that panko) lord have mercy. Expect me to be back in a week or so to try all their menu. read more

I came to this same location about a year ago when it was EEVA. I loved absolutely loved the pizza there so I had high expectations. CHAR did not disappoint. My friend and I came here spontaneously after watching a reel of it on Instagram. The wood-fired pizza and cheese pull sold us. We came here during a snow storm and I can tell you, we absolutely had no regrets. CHAR is just starting up so they are currently using paper plates/utensils and you grab your own water. I actually really liked the laid back/casual aspect of this place. It seemed like the owner was just having a bunch of friends over for dinner. He was working by the pizza oven and chatting with people sitting at the bar. We ordered the Fun guy pizza and ahhhh I think about this pizza on a daily basis. I feel like the only thing I need to tell you is to come here and eat your crust. I'm a serial crust non-eater and here I slammed a whole pie. It was earlier on a Friday that I showed up with my partner. It was his birthday weekend and I wanted to start off with something special and boy did I happen to choose correctly. We walked in and sat at the counter, and grabbed some water and napkins. We ordered our pies and began chitchatting with the person next to us and the folks behind the counter. What a lovely group of people, and let me tell ya the views from the counter are worth fighting over After some great chat and some funny jokes our pies came out and they were GORGEOUS. Perfectly browned, bubbly, cheesy, fatty, and they tasted as incredible as they looked. The flavors were so well balanced on the special drunken shroom, and the pepperoni is now my new favorite pepperoni. We were offered a slice of tomato pie and I did say I liked anchovies and ended up with some on top. We closed dinner with the pistachio and sweet cream swirl. All in all: come sit at the counter, order the special, make friends, feel special, even if the day isn't that special. This place and these folks will make you feel special. read more
