I was a bit disappointed. I got the nigiri dinner, and for some reason, it was subpar. The fish and rice were a bit dry, as though they had been sitting out for a while. I couldn't help but think it was only a step above grocery store nigiri except twice the price. I was really sushi-d out by the end of the meal and haven't been craving nigiri since. It was kind of a small restaurant downtown with a nice ambiance, and it looked like it was a popular spot for date nights. I didn't know what to expect when I looked up sushi restaurants in Springfield but I'm so glad I found this place. I sat at the bar and the bartender was such a gem! So sweet, attentive and she made a delicious pickle martini with her homemade pickles! Best pickles I've ever had, by the way. And then there was the Chirashi! Fish was fresh and high quality! I was thoroughly impressed and would highly recommend this place to anyone craving sushi. I think I should update my previous review. Unfortunately I was starving so my phone did not eat first. The first time I visited I really did not enjoy my time, however this time was pretty good. The drinks we amazing and the best was the pomegranate margarita in my opinion. We also had salads, edamame and the lettuce wraps which are the best! I would say I am gluten free and the gluten free menu needs a little work. It would be nice if the Items had descriptions instead of asking the servers as some of the rolls were not on the other description sheet. However the table we were given was wobbly and right next to the opening to one of their private large tables. They had a man come in and look at the area and were discussing him renting the area and decorations directly over my head. He even rested his hand on the back of my chair as he spoke. I had to ask for our table setting, the waitress dropped off our appetizer and didn't even notice that he had absolutely nothing but the candle and our water glasses on our table. I arrived at Kai roughly 9pm last night with a group of four, one of us were celebrating a birthday and the other a graduation from a Masters program. We brought a $50 cake to eat at the end as we have done to celebrate many times before, at Cheddar's, Apple Bee's etc. The wait was awful, even after having a reservation. It took 30 minutes to get drinks, the waitress was sweet but you could tell the place was HIGHLY understaffed. Seemed like every other table needed to be cleaned off. After about an hour and a half of being there we finally got our food. I was absolutely starved. About the food ; The sushi rolls were sub par. Collectively we got 2 steaks, a California roll and a Miami vice roll, and french fries. Both sushi rolls tasted like they were picked out of a super market the day before, and the steaks were dry. This establishment doesn't even have A1 for their dry steaks! Not any steak sauce at all besides a horrible cherry syrup that tastes awful. (bring your own steak sauce) At this point we were just trying to make it through the dinner. We got through got the check and asked for our cake - the waitress kinda bumbled her words, indicating that the cake had been "tossed around, or mishandled" and couldn't be taken out of the box. After 3 more staff members stopped by in an attempt to convince us that it was our fault the cake was ruined - which we did not fall for - finally who I assume was the manager on duty came to our table. The most 'professional' person in the building - the one supposed to be in charge of hospitality of the business - came to our table out of no where without request, to confront the four of us. Rudely and straight up lying through her teeth, we were told that we brought in a smashed cake. We were told it was "OUR fault." Their staff has "NEVER messed anything up ". also that "NO other restaurant allows patrons to bring in cakes", to someone who is a mother, a father, a business owner like we don't know how the world works. Very disappointing in this visit to Kai. Will not recommend to ANYONE. read more

Host greeted us promptly, polite/friendly, showed us to our table upstairs. Dirty plate on table... Swapped with next table's plate. Ordered a Sushi roll and the Tempura shrimp ( lightly fried with veggies). Ordered 2 cocktails which showed up long after our appetizers. Not impressed. The order delivered was the sushi roll version of the tempura shrimp, not the hot appetizer. Advised the waitress that I had ordered the hot version. Her response, do you want to place an order for that? I said yes, if you will take this sushi version back. Her response "no, I cannot do that. Sorry I should have asked you which type you wanted." Not the most professional response. Sushi rolls- appealing presentation, seaweed not fresh, poor quality and not appealing. Our drinks arrived: nice pour of wine and delicious, beautiful cocktail (Raspberry Mojito). Pan seared scallops with mushrooms/ asparagus. Sauce was flavorful as was the asparagus. Do you know the expression "eat dirt?" That is what it was like eating the unrinsed scallops; like chewing rocks. Spring Rolls found - A HAIR! Big Fat and not our color / length. Baked INTO the roll. Showed it to waitress and also advised about the unwashed scallops. Manager explained " that was not staff's hair because we order the Spring Rolls in fully prepared and only heat them up". She offered a replacement of anything on the menu. Who wants to order from a restaurant that doesn't even make their own food, sources their frozen food from a company that delivers food with hair inside, serves dirty scallops AND uses dirty plates? We declined, so she provided a dessert and took those 2 items off the bill..... Very disappointed that a high-end restaurant serves frozen prepackaged food, and uses low quality seaweed with unpleasant smell. Poor quality sushi is available @ cheaper options anywhere in Springfield, no need to go to Kai for that. read more

If you can't tell by all the pictures of sushi I'm obsessed with Kai!!! I have been going to Kai for years and I almost always have a great experience. The food is always so fresh and delicious. And the drinks are always strong a tasty. I have tried serval items on the menu and my top three go to sushi rolls are: 1) Oh My God Roll 2) Spicy Tuna #2 3) Jurasic Park Roll. When I'm craving something other than sushi I order the Lobster Mac off the hot appetizer menu which is definitely enough to fill me up! Really great little getaway in the middle of downtown Springfield. The atmosphere was sexy and the service was good. Def try and get a booth because they're comfy, furry and a bit more private. We started with miso and some edamoms. The miso was great and the wok edamame were delicious. Def opt for the wok ones as they're way more flavorful and spicy. We followed that with the spicy tuna and drunken tiger tolls. One of the rolls we ordered had some surprise asparagus inside and we weren't expecting that and didn't feel like it went well with the roll. Okay let me give my two cents in this. I visited Springfield for some army event and I needed to find a place to eat for lunch with my mother who has to eat some Asian food during the trip. So I found this place and thought... well it's Missouri, I'm sure it's just a cheap quality food. But let me tell you how our experience was from when we walked in to when we left. The ambience was so nice and very Los Angeles like !! I'm from Los Angeles California, so I get picky with sushi places. They had Korean food in their menu so we had to go with it ! The kalbi bibimbop is something we never tried as koreans so we had to get it !! Kalbi is Korean marinated short ribs and bibimbap is mixed bowl of meat and rice with bunch of vegetables. My mom kept saying it was so delicious. We ordered sushi too !!! Yeah the real sushi not the rolls.... Rolls are not real sushi, people lol anyways the sushi was so good and the way they made the sushi rice was on point !!! To be honest the rice for the salmon was a lot for what I'm used to but I don't care lol!! Let me get back to the bibimbop. The bibimbop's portion was huge !!!! We were so full, we couldn't finish. There was this cheese asparagus thingy we got too... Omgsh Omgsh that thing was super delicious. It came with homemade sauce which I don't want to spoil for you but you have to try ! People talk about how expensive this place is lol but uhhh I thought the price was super reasonable we were both so surprised. If you think this is expensive, maybe you can't afford to go to high end places lol.. maybe you should just go to a diner down the street lol just sayin. The food quality is good and they make their food/ sauces from scratch. It seems like they put their efforts into their menu.. so yes, they deserve to get paid THAT which is not even alot. Great food and not a horrible price very nice feels fancy without making you penniless

Unfortunately had a very negative experience. Restaurant seemed very cool, great ambience, and food was awesome. My bad experience is from hopefully a misunderstanding but at worst ripping off customers. Menu has a 300ml bottle of nigori saki which I ordered for $17. I was brought a glass carafe that had maybe 100ml of said Saki. When pressed it had to be taken to the manager who said the Saki was expensive and the menu was a mistake and that's how they have been serving it for months. Quick search shows the Saki is $7 a bottle which would make sense for them to sell for $17 a bottle. I honestly feel like they are misrepresenting what they are selling and taking advantage of customers. This would be the equivalent of going to a restaurant and ordering a bottle of wine. Then them bringing 1/3 of the bottle and saying it was the whole bottle. A shame because it would be a nice place if they weren't trying to rip people off. read more
