I'm surprised I have not reviews Charcoal Kabob yet! I have been coming to them for over 10 years now. They have grown quite a bit since then - decor has gotten better and menus is bigger now too. Like the fact that none of their kabobs are yogurt based (marinade)! Don't know why other kabob places feel the urge to add yogurt to all their marinades to make it creamy or moist. I guess then they can use older meat and it will stay moist longer. Their kadai chicken is to die for! ditto for chapali kabob. The portion was huge but I found the kabobs to be bland.We had ordered chicken kabob and chapli kabob. They were served with side and rice. I had got chicken curry as side and it tasted good with rice. BUT the kabob was quite bland. The ambiance is OK. The wait for food is 5 min to 10 mins. read more

Not bad. I ordered the lamb kabob to go. It came with some vegetables, about 2 cups of rice, a side dish of my choosing, and the kebab wrapped in bread. The kebab itself was delicious, but it didn't really satisfy me portion-wise, especially for the $13 I paid for it. Perhaps next time I'll pay for the items on the buffet. This was my first visit to Charcoal Kabob. It is located in a large strip mall with many other restaurants and anchored by Kmart, so there is plenty of parking. They were very efficient about taking my order but they were not very busy at dinner time on a Monday. There were only a few other people in the restaurant and only one was dining in - the other two were takeouts. I ordered the lamb kabobs with chickpeas ($9.99) to go. The bread was fantastic and the rice was delicious. The lamb had a nice flavor too it and was tender. However, the chickpeas were just okay. I ordered them based on some of the other Yelp reviews but wasn't amazed by them. read more

My colleague introduced me to this place 3 weeks ago. Got so addicted ever since. Big portion for what you pay. I love the keema (10.99) & chicken-keema combo (12) kebab. Their side dishes also good. During lunch time it got packed. So I'd suggest go before 12 or after 2pm. Since they do have to prepare your food, it may take a while (20 mins wait time). Spicy chicken kofta!! This dish is perfect for someone that loves spicy kick to their kabobs. Spicy chicken kofta is juicy spicy and very flavorful. Love their chickpeas and lentil sides. Chickpeas have a bit of spicy but not overly spicy. Lentil is a bit spicier. I also tried their super combo which comes with beef, chicken kabobs and beef kofta. All pretty good but chicken kabob was a bit on the dry side. Service was good. They do get busy and you might have to wait about 15 minutes or longer to get your food after you order. If they get your order wrong, trust me they will fix that problem for you! So be patient. You'll get your food. read more

I've been going to CK for more than 25 years and it's been one of my favorite Afghan places in entire DC Metro. The past three four times I've been there, the service and food proportions have gone south really bad. The three brothers that owned the place used to be there and fully run and oversee the operations. Had the Haleem and Lamb Kabob... Haleem tasted like lentil and nothing like it is supposed to be! The Chana wasn't really good too. Kabob pieces were so small that i could take them all in 2 gulps. We like Kabobs. No, I mean we REALLY like Kabobs. This is THE place to go in this area if you like Kabobs as much as we do. The bread is amazing, and the meats used in their dishes is as good as it gets. The decor is pretty plain, but the dining room is clean. The service is quick, but they are not the most welcoming staff I have ever encountered. Nevertheless, I am here for a kabob, not to make a friend. The sides and sauce are all wonderful, but I usually go for the chickpeas. If I could change anything about his place, and every other kabob house around here, is to eliminate all the plastic and styrofoam. You have this wonderful, savory and aromatic meal, but they serve on styrofoam plates. It really deserves better. Plastic cutlery and then you drink your water from....guess what.....styrofoam cups. A long-standing great example of authentic Afghan Kabob in Northern VA. Charcoal kabob has been in Herndon for a very long time, before the massive rise in people and money in Fx County. The bread and chicken Kabob are absolute standouts and I'd put them up against the best of any other place. The chickpeas are also excellent. I prefer mine spicy, and they've added a spicy chutney that really makes a big difference to me. It's spicy but has a ton of flavor. The Tandoori chicken is their take on bone in, spicy chicken Kabob and it's phenomenal. Something interesting is that this place makes a wide variety of food from various countries. Most Kabob joints offer Kabob in their country's style - Lebanese, Afghan, Pakistani, Indian, Persian are all distinctly different even with a few items that most have (e.g. bread/naan, chickpeas/hummus, yogurt sauces, etc). This place offers traditional Pakistani Karahi, traditional Indian stuff like Jafrezel, and traditional Afghan like Chopan. They remodeled the restaurant also and it's really nice and welcoming now. I've been coming to this place for almost two decades now and some friends of mine have been going for even longer. The quality has remained the same, always top-notch. The food is always good, and in almost 2 decades I can count the number of times I've been dissatisfied with my food on one hand. Personal favorites of mine are the chicken karahi and kubideh kabob. In short, Charcoal Kabob is a step up above Moby's Dick but not at the same level as Kabob Palace. I can't think of any down sides. I had the chicken and lamb kabobs with rice, salad, naan, and a chicken stew side which is a great amount of food for $14. The kabobs are good - doesn't quite have the intense grill flavor that I like but it's still juicy and tasty. All of the sides are pretty standard stuff - you come for the kabobs so that's fine. After ordering chicken kabab, the cashier couldn't get the credit card reader to work, kept me waiting for 10min and the line behind me started to build up. Then, the manager and the cashier without even apologizing suggest that I should have a seat and pay when my order is ready. 30mins later, no one called me and I didn't even have a number to pick up my order, the people behind me picked up their orders and almost finished eating . We ordered the super combo - spicy beef, chicken, and lamb skewer. I think the beef skewer is the same as the chapli kabob. It's delicious!! I wasn't a big fan of the side I chose, Dahl.
